Peter - it would be interesting to see the guys post an update around May 1st (just prior to the Worlds), or probably just after (hate to see one of the guys pull a hammy just prior. I did some OHS for fun (mini-comp with an athlete) and was amazed how much further you can go if you lean back and start by standing on a trig... Another several weeks and I'll re-test. Will admit to be a little scared of landing in the jumps - just like Betz, I'll go to the track. Dave B. |

Dave, Check out this video of Bert and his training partner heaving the shot and doing the SLJ and STJ. Good examples of a beginner and an expert at work. I note that despite the fact that Bert's training partner is a novice thrower and is not exactly a decathlete, he got through all three tests without any incidents. http://youtube.com/watch?v=3fjgObcrORk&feature=related How far did you heave the shot anyway? I would love to see everyone do at least the Overhead Shot Toss during the next few weeks and every month or so thereafter. It would be very hard for a thrower to hurt themselves doing this movement. It has a great correlation or transfer to an individual's performance in many of the throws (i.e. an improvement in the OHS by a given athlete will likely signal improvements in their throws). Keep in mind that I will be keeping a separate chart for just the OHS toss. The Standing Long Jump into a sandpit or onto mats is also unlikely to injure anyone who has taken the time to warmup properly and does not have serious knee or ankle problems. Doing this right after the OHS test is often ideal. One's relative personal result in this test is also a great indicator of your physical readiness to throw far. The Standing Triple Jump and obviously the 30m sprint are more intense and have a greater downside potential for those who have not prepared themselves for such tests. The only thing I would say is, if you plan on doing any of these tests, if not sometime in April or perhaps the beginning of May, then when???

6'3" 300lbs SLJ: 8'1" STJ: 25'7" OH: 18.82m(61'75") Figured I would finelly get out there and test. I think gaining some weight and not working out much hurt my jumps, but my OH was pretty much the same. Crazy huh? haha. I plan on training harder over the summer(i know backwords from what most of you are doing). So we'll see how it goes later on |

I realized that since I have been encouraging everyone to do the Triathlon test and the Power Ratio test, I better retest myself now that the good weather has finally arrived.
Although this was (sadly) the very first time I have done anything like this since my last test in the fall, and these tests usually improve significantly with a bit of practice, I was still disappointed my results were not a bit higher. They are virtually identical to my last tests!
After doing the OHS, where my best was 50'7", and SLJ, with 3 separate jumps at just 8'5 (and 3 more between 8'3" and 8'4"), I decided not attempt the STJ test until I was a bit more prepared. Almost 42 years old, 6'3" tall, 262 lbs. (the standard variety, not Myles' version).
I will test again in a couple of weeks or so, hopefully including the STJ test.

Peter, I did my over head shot about 2 1/2 months ago and I was at 45ft. I just tried it for the first time since then and it went up to 50ft. have not changed my lifting that much but have been throwing like crazy. I dont jump off the trig though. Is that hurting me? just goes to show that the highland games will make you very explosive. did the SLJ for the first time and got 8'10. not bad but I think I can do a little better. As for the STJ, I wont do it till way later in the season cause my knees dont like it. |

Ryan, Throwing from the trig will likely increase your OHS by at least several inches IF you have decent balance and athleticism and know how to use the trig to your advantage. Initially, it might not help at all until you get used to the differences. |

Looks like this thread slowed down, but I like it. Sounds like video is
required? Or do we just pay attention to this in the offseason, hence the title... ? |

Wow, I added 28 pounds of bodyweight and my totals went way down
2012 2007
SLJ 5' 7" 7' 7"
TLJ 17' 6" 21' 3"
OHS 29' 1" 32' 6"
In competition Braemar is the same, OS is down, WFD a little lower, Hammers are the same, Caber is better, Sheaf is better, WOB the same. Will spend the next 10 weeks working on speed and athletisism. Will test again along the way.
