Gerry said "At the moment - I am still waiting for folk to make suggestions as to how we can improve the event."

field way to big, have a 300m runnin track at the most. the crowd were now way near the braemar, 16lb and 56lb for distance. pretty much all events for that matter.

far too many things going on at once, open, juniors, masters, womens, disabled. this was the world champs - showcase it, the crowd didn't have a clue what was goin on with all the other events taking place.

Ah now that's more like it.

Good stuff Bruce. I know where you are coming from.

I assume by "field way too big" - you would have liked us to compress everything that was happening in the World Championships directly in front of our small Grandstand.

We did think about that but decided to spread the stations around the field so that we could cater for everyone who would be on that field safely and also to spread the damage caused by the equipment thudding into the turf around a very soaked and soft main field that would be hosting the European Pipe Band Championships and 4500 pipers 6 days later. You may have noticed that as soon as a station was clear, the groundstaff was all over it, carrying out immediate repairs.

In order to try ensure that the crowd did know what was going on we asked David Webster to provide full commentary for the World Championships on both days and provided limited commentary via Jock Watt and Colin Baillie on everything else that was going on. We also gave you Heavies national flags on 10 foot poles to carry around the field so that it was obvious which event was the World Championships.

I have had folk email me saying how much they enjoyed being able to to follow the World Championships via David's commentary so it just goes to show how folk have different perceptions of things from different parts of the field.

We also gave the crowd free programmes on entry to help them follow the action.

All the events took place within 20 - 30 feet of the crowd barriers so that the crowd - if they wanted to - could get close to the World Championship action.

The noise out of the Grandstand suggested that they were into all the events and could see ok.

Because we have a full track and field programme, solo piping competitions, pipe band competitions and solo piping competitions to get through on the Saturday - we decided to split the Worlds over 2 days to showcase the climax of the Worlds on the Sunday.

Personally I preferred our 2006 Masters Lay Out where each event had its own arena around the Park and Highland Games fans could get real close to the event they wanted to watch. Having said that it was a gloriously sunny weekend and getting shelter from the rain was not an issue for the crowd lastyear.

Gerry What About a Full Time Media Person/Dept That Could Liase With All The Local/Nationals With Storys/Results/League Tables Fixtures And Wine Dine The Decision Makers ,These People Would Have A Part Time Team Througout Each Regions Feeding Info Etc.

As In Football We Have The Walker Bowl Leicester,Reebok Stadium Etc ,If We Could Get The Media Etc Sorted Maybe Some Of These Larger Companies Could Act As Main Sponsor Of Games And Put In The Neccassary Level Of Funding Required

Great posts - I couldnt agree more on both accounts -  I love attending Games held in venues that have a bank or grandstands that tower above the throwing arena. There is a baseball stadium in Disneys World of Sport in Florida that I remember thinking would be a perfect venue for the World Championships.....sigh
