Yeah, Ryan has been vulnerable this year. It's true,
Edmunds is kicking ass, Robb is impressive, and the rest
of the American contingent is pretty damn good. That
English bloke throws a decent stone, and the Ukrainian
doesn't exactly suck.

But come on, people. It's the biggest of big games. He
may only win one event, but Ryan V. will rise to the
occasion and take the title. Again.

VIERRA ALL THE WAY.  All are great throwers but the man just keep coming at it!  He has another gear.  It does not matter if he is vulnerable or not.  All that matters is who brings it to the dance.  He has proven beyond a doubt he brings it when it counts!  Until someone else can prove otherwise no one else gets my vote.

I agree with Gallager. I've had the great fortune of training and spending time with Ryan. When it comes down to it, the man rises to new levels of superior athleticism. I have goosebumps just thinking about it.He's an awesome force, the center of a universe where by all other planets revolve.

Vierra is pure class..not to take anything away from the other great pro's who have made it..but the man has icewater in his veins..will win a few but place well enough for the overall...key to this WC is to make the least mistakes and time and time agin Ryan proved he is the king of throwing well while limiting any breathing room for someone to sneak up on him

Wow, I have been disconnected from the community for a while and I am encouraged that the lines are alive and well.  This year should be interesting.  A lot of different strengths throughout.  I don't think anyone can be counted out.  We all have our favorites, it will be interesting.  Good luck to all competing!

Ryan, everyone else in 2nd place. Bruce Robb looks dangerous. While I'm not a fan of his training methods, Brock is a machine. Can't comment on Edmunds except he has the potential to blow everyone away on a few events. Seeing as Pat isn't throwing, I'll be hoping Dave Barron kicks some butt.

I hate to rain on your parade folks - but the OFFICIAL worlds were held last weekend (and every year) at Balloch on Loch Lomond

Results were as follows

1st Ryan Vierra - World champion for 2007 with 41 points

2nd Bruce Robb - Runner up with 32 points

3rd Pat Hellier - with 30 points

4th Bruce Aitken

Bad weather and heavy rain was the order of the day, so no records were broken by any thrower. Hopfully next year will be better.

With everybody is throwing so well these days, it's a tough call. Ryan is the safe bet. Sean is pure excellence these days, but Dave is my sleeper because he is capable of pulling off a meet with a pr in every event.

Having said that, if Brock puts together a day like he did at Loch Norman, he'll be hard to touch.

Tough Call because of the way the events are spaced out.

Sean Betz (he was good at Alva, after an epic journey)

Ryan Vierra (because he is the WORLD champion)

Gregor Edmunds (His strength carries him but on a good day, wow)

Bruce Robb (top six, depends on his hammers, might make him higher)

Larry Brock (Hammers and weights are Larry's forte but the putts. . . .)

And don't count out Bruce Aitken ( broke the ground record at Stonehaven on Saturday in the hammer).

But then again, what do I know!

For Canadian athletes, see
http://www.csaf.ca/ - http://www.csaf.ca/ .

Results of some games in Scotland are posted on
Malcolm Cleghorn's board (usually top three per event):

The SGA posts limited results (top three per event) of
its games, but it's spotty - for example, they posted
results from Balloch but NOT the heavy events, even
though it's their version of the world championships.

http://www.highlandgames-sga.com/ - http://www.highlandgames-sga.com/

For the Netherlands and Belgium, try here:

http://www.highlandgamesfederatie.org/RankingRecords.html - http://www.highlandgamesfederatie.org/RankingRecords.html

Elsewhere, good luck finding anything. You can try
checking the websites of individual games. There are no
international rankings, until the new WC ranking system
goes up.

Don't worry about amateur athletes - that has no real
meaning outside North America.

In regards to WHOM...if you want to be the KING...you have to kill him first...

ALWAYS go with experiance and its really more about WHO all shows up to thrw in a particular individuals weak events so the invites have a lot to do with it.

As I related to a doubtful pro once who questioned Ryans "vitamin" regimen...do you know anyone who wore out 3-VCR's in a years time ?  How about anyone who wore the pads off his feet doing drills.  Find that guy first then ask the QUESTION ....

Yes your throwers are excellent, no doubt there, but you got to remember you have 10 times as many throwers as us thats why you have more in the pro division. we are just a small nation. But dont really want to get into an argument as to who is better, scotland or the us. Childs play..

I concur with Macleod here.  Country of 4.5 Million vs. a country of 300 Million?  In the long run of course the US will have more and better throwers.  But on any given Sunday......

Having said all of that Congrats to the Scots for a brilliant victory.  Gregor is young enough to become a force for sometime. Bruce A and Bruce R are impressive as well.

I am looking forward to Bridgeport WV next year! A healthy Ryan, great field to throw on, great competitors from all over fighting for the world championship.

Huge congrats to Larry Brock as well after coming back from an injury and surgery sometime ago to be competing at the level he did this year is incredible.

i disagree because while our country is bigger--we don't have that big of a pool to pull from for a fringe sport...if yur a big-explosive guy in Scotland-you migrate to the heavies...in the uS if you are big and explosive-some money sports call you first-american football (pro and college)and even pro wrestling...by the time the majority of Americans get exposed to highland games they are in there early twenties...but if they strated earler who knows(good example barron bros and Eric Frasure)

Actually, Dan, that's not true. They're having lots of
trouble in Scotland finding anybody who's interested in
competing in the heavy events. It's a fringe sport there
too. They may not have football to attract athletes, but
they've got rugby.

There are games with only a handful of competitors, and
at least one games in the past couple of weeks with a
number of foreign athletes, but not one from Scotland.
The sons of heavies, if they choose to throw, do have
early exposure (Aitken and Edmunds, for example), but
even so, Gregor did the strongman thing first, and Bruce
Robb is primarily a discus thrower (or was). It's a
first choice for very few people.

And Your Field Coaching Throughout Your Educational Studies Are Brilliant Being Lucky To See These For Myself A Number Of Years Ago.

Bruce Aitken Won 2 hammers ,Bruce Robb Won 28/56wfh And Without Winning Any Of The Events Gregor Was Consistent Enough To Claim The Win.

Have to agree with most comments, agm is quite right that Rugby is a first sport here but so is 'lethargy'  It will be good to see how these new throwing 'schools' in Scotland will change things if they work well.  Was speaking with David Horne who is doing a lot of good work with his group, the Perthshire scheme is going well and I have been doing a lot of work in the schools here.

Steve I don't think there is a change more like an inconsistency, when the guys are competing at this level it's really hard to choose a winner and as you already mentioned the wins were split between a few guys although Gregor proved to be the most consistent on the day he did not win any events.  We have been waiting for big Bruce to come over to the heavy events from Discus for a few years now, let's hope he stays now.  We certainly need more guys, never seen so many oldies taking part in Scotland, you could even come out of retirement and throw for another 10 years and you would not be the same age as somo of the guys still throwing, so get yer hammer boots out the cellar and start throwing again!!!

Even though I will always pull for Ryan, it is good for the health of the sport to have a Scot win.  Long-term domination by the U.S. or any other country can really take the interest out of it and discourage young throwers in Scotland.

I hope that Ryan heals up, stops going to the chiropractor, and reclaims his title next year in Bridgeport.  But, now it is really interesting.

Oh i was there all right - even spoke to you malky. Just been reading all that guff on the alba site about how well organised the Inverness games were and all that back patting everyone was dishing out - perhaps you should speak with Kenny Mcdonald or Walter Weir and ask them why they had to go fetch the groundsman and get him to paint in circles during the games so that athletes could throw, or perhaps you call that well organised

Also i thought that was rather a cheap shot by Gerry slaggin me off on your board as he knows full well that you have denied me the right of reply. When you going to grow up son and recognise the right of free speech - i may not agree with everything you say but i will defend to the death your right to say it. Pity you dont have the same principals

                                                  cc

P.S. When BJIB asked you the question on Alba your silence was deafening and spoke volumes - just goes to show that the emotional balckmail that Gerry  hit on you about leaving the board done the trick."Its my bat and my ball and your no playing" springs to mind.

OK Dummerkopf here's the story

Mike and the other groundsmen were not to mark out the rectangles/circles until they had spoken to Steve Conway, I believe that they were marked out soon after.  Mike MacLeod is not an expert on highland games throwing (unlike caber catcher freak) so how was he to know that circles were also required?  Did you? Maybe you should have pointed it out.  So who'd fault was it???? yup Kenny and Walter's as they are the only people who wanted circles, the throwers hate them.

About yer free speech yes you have it here and I agree with free speech until your death, but free speech should be conducted in a sensible and non volatile way and you proved on many occasions that you could not contain your violent nature by sticking knives in everyones back, why do you have to be like this?  You must have had a severe bullying at school or something similar?

Funny when I got back on Sunday Jules had tae pull that dagger oot ma back, why didn't you tell me then who you were?

chicken sh1t springs to mind " I'll be nice to your face but stick knives in you as soon as you turn your back"

The "truth" is, CC, when you showed up on Malcolm's
board (which I read regularly, even if I rarely post),
you were rude, insulting and belligerent, and mostly
targeted Gerry. Why? Judging from your posts, it was for
two reasons: because you didn't agree with him on the
direction he was taking the games (see your own words
above, Mr. Hypocrite), and because he's English. If you
had engaged in civil discussion about your concerns for
the games, nobody would have reason to object to your
presence. But when you behave like a jackass, and
constantly bring up someone's nationality as a reason
for disliking him and opposing his efforts, you make a
strong argument for banning you.

As you've discovered, a lot of people on two different
boards don't like you and want you gone, not just
Malcolm and Gerry. Maybe it's time to take a look at
your own behavior and figure out why that is. You've got
two basic choices. Either you're an asshole, or you're a
decent person who has given people reason to think
you're an asshole. Either way, it's up to you to make
the appropriate changes in your behavior.

The third option, of course, is that you're the good guy
in this, and we're the assholes. But if that's the case,
why would you waste your time with us? Just go away and
get on with your life.

Thats the second time you have called me a jackass for no good reason, and yes i dont like the direction Gerry is taking highland games. Ifind it very objectional that someone from another country comes up here and tries to americianise part of our culture and heritage. I have no problem with the show Gerry puts on in Inverness provided he calls it a fete or sideshow or something similar but NOT a highland games.

I said you behave like a jackass. Now, what could
possibly be my reason for saying that? Hmmm... maybe
it's the way you behave?

I suggest re-reading the second paragraph of my last
message. If you're not a jackass, then the image you're
presenting of yourself is way off the mark, and it would
be to your benefit to figure out why.

Frankly cc, Gerry has done a hell of a lot for the Highland Games (not sure what you've done since you haven't posted your name), and he busts his a$$ doing it.  IMHO, Scotland is damned lucky to have him.  He's an organizational and marketing genius, and his Games are among the finest in the world.  (I was in Inverness last year.)

P.S. Got balls?  What's your name?

I am going to share something with you folks and I hope that you will realise that it is time to ignore CC because I know I am.

Nobody will ever be able to spoil last weekend for me because something happend to me that I will remember for the rest of my life.

Those of you who were at Inverness or saw the you tube video of Bruce demolishing our Games record in the WOB will have seen the great statues that were erected alongside our running track.

A couple of years ago I was introduced to a wonderful woman in her early thirties called Evi Whatmore from New York.

She had come to the Highland Capital to help us brighten the place up with public art and her vision and her personality lit up the place.

I was really looking forward to seeing what she was so determined to achieve being turned into a reality.

A few months later I heard that she had returned to New York and then the sad news filtered through.

She was fighting cancer and it didnt look good.

A while later I heard that she had lost her battle and I asked around for her parents email address because I wanted them to know just how much we had thought of her.

It was tough to find the words but it was something I needed to do.

They needed to know.

A few months passed and then I got an email out of the blue from her monther.

She apologised for not replying sooner (which says more about her than I ever can) but it had been so hard for them that they couldnt find the strength to reply to all the emails that had been sent to them from the Highlands.

On the day that I got her reply I was attending a meeting at the VisitScotland HQ in Strathpeffer about our Games and as I got out of the car I noticed that there were these four giant statues that a local sculpter was working on.

I dunno if Evi was watching or if it was the email from her mother but instead of going in for the meeting I found myself walking over to the statues and suddenly arranging to have them taken by crane to Inverness to decorate the Games field.

Our local paper ran a piece about the statues on the Tuesday before the Games and everyone who saw them when they were lowered into position on Friday loved them.

Anyway, the Games came and went and by Sunday I was shattered.

As I stood to one side watching Gregor being photographed and congratulated, a couple broke away from the crowd and asked if I was Gerry Reynolds.

"We are Evi's parents and we heard about the statues on Wednesday...."

When two people fly from New York to give you a hug and thank you for doing something that they will appreciate for the rest of their lives......who cares what CC thinks.

I know I dont.

Cut him some slack? Why, in the hope that maybe he'll
get better?

No. There is no excusing the personal attacks - which he
started, completely unprovoked. If he feels backed into
a corner, it's a consequence of his behavior, not the
cause of it.

If he demonstrates that he can contribute to discussions
in a positive manner, without unwarranted rudeness and
belligerence, then I think most of us would welcome his
participation here. I certainly will. But not until
then.

Or in simpler terms: Caber Catcher, if you learn to play
nice, you're welcome to play here. Otherwise, sod off.

Interesting stuff, I haven't been able to access the board recently, I'm still travelling. My hats off to Gerry and the rest of the crew at Inverness. I was treated with total respect and friendliness by all concerned. Kenny MacDonald and Walter Weir and the other judges that I worked with  were all very accomodating and professional. As in any large games there are always details that can fall through the cracks at any given moment. Given the weather and the scope of these games, I'd say that it was an overall success. Caber Catcher, like most other anonymous critics always find it easier to bitch then to help... Congrats to Gregor Edmunds for a well deserved win and the rest of the guys for a fine competition. It was a pleasure to finally meet the some of the pros that I haven't met before. Steve C.

Hi  all,

My name is Julie (wife of Malky) I read this board every day and it is fab. The big thing I am noticing is that you all seem to be encouraging CC, now if you all surf over anything he has to say and dont acknowledge it then he will go away.  He is obbviously an attention seeker, so dont give him any attention good or bad.

Nice to see you all having a laugh at my expence - trouble is  - i really dont mind.   But if you had listened to what i had to say on the more serious issue of our scottish culture and heritage then i think you might just start to agree with me.

message for AGM - YOU MAY RIDICULE ME ALL YOU WANT BUT I BET MY BOTTOM DOLLAR IF SOME MEXICAN CAME OVER YOUR BORDER AND TRIED TO CHANGE THE GAME OF BASEBALL OUT OF ALL RECOGNITION THEN YOU MIGHT HAVE JUST A SMALL IDEA OF WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO WATCH HELPLESSLY AS TO WHAT IS HAPPENING IN INVERNESS

That kinda puts it into context about how i feel about gerry reynolds and what he is doing to highland games.

You just don't get it, do you. If you object to changes
in the highland games, that's OK - argue your position,
make your points, do whatever you feel you need to do.
That's reasonable. People do that here all the time.

But when you make it personal, you lose all credibility.
And when you blame it all on Gerry's nationality, you
just bury yourself.

Argue over issues, not people, not nationalities (or
race, sex, religion, etc.). Got it?

That's it. I'm done wasting time with you.

Thats right malcolm - stick your head in the sand regarding the real issues about traditional highland games, just so long as you support your mate gerry. Think on mate you are at the end of your career and never really set the heather on fire even when younger - but what about the poor buggers coming along after you ? do they really want a highland games with dozens of meaningless compititions and graded competitors? or should we just have open competitions with survival of the fittest being the order of the day. in my opinion that is the only way that we will continue to produce good throwers. but on a more selfish note i suppose you want a masters grade and then when too old for that then a super masters.  seems plain selfish to me.

oh and but the way caber chicken what do you do to help the longevity of the games, since we only know you as Jock and I certainly have not heard of you helping any games at ANY level at all.

I sit on 7 committees (none of which have a masters category) and also go round schools running mini highland games maybe running around 30 - 40 per term.

All you do is whinge and get at people negative negative negative why don't you get back under your rock and leave highland games alone, they are obviously doing fine without your whingeing.
