He had a brother, his name escapes me. I think it was AEngus. Actually, I am still in the process of tracking that connection. It is either through his brother or it was his father's brother, Gillis, who was also at Culloden and fought alongside Lochiel. In fact, he and Lochiel were both shot in the legs by the English during their retreat. Gillis dragged Lochiel to his home, where his wife patched them both up. Gillis and John are big family names., which is why it is kind of difficult to figure out family connections in the McBains. Thankfully, our family members kept pretty good records. The problem is trying to find them. This is something I have been researching for about 20 years with my grandfather. He and his brother started researching it about 50 years ago.
Tell her we even have a city near Cadillac named after us, McBain. It was founded by my gggrandfather, John, and his brother, Gillis. Most of my family is buried there. I was just there in November playing the pipes for my grandmother's funeral.
The "A" in McBain was dropped when we came to Canada after the Clearances. It was customary at the time. You even find it in Scotland, when you can find a McBain. We tend to be a hard family to find in Scotland now thanks to Culloden and the Clearances. When I was over there in 1998, I went to the village on the east side of Loch Ness, Dores, my family came from and they were very impressed that a McBain was back in their midsts. The owner of the B&B I stayed in would not shut up about it.
The spellings are McBain, MacBain, MacBean, MacVean, Bain, Bean, Beane and a few other variations. The family is a relative of MacBeath. They are known as very warlike, stubborn, but dedicated friends.
