Because I live 5 hours from most of the games at a minumum, with the exception of alma (3.5 to 4 hours),I have been trying to get a games in the northern part of Michigan for some time, but nothing has really panned out. Is there anyone out there that would be willing to help me in my lobbying efforts to get a game up here? Perhaps some ideas on locations and/or festivals the games could be tagged on to?

I thought I saw something about a heavy event being held in Rockford - don't know where I saw it or when it is though. I have not competed yet, this summer will be my first games either in Alma or Kzoo. I was wondering why Big Rapids or Mount Pleasant might be open to something like the games.

So far, I have worked with the Traverse City St. Andrews Society and the good people of Beaver Island on bringing in highland games. The TC society says they are open to the idea after a couple of years at their annual summer picnic. The islanders and I thought about adding the games to their annual St. Pats festival, but that may not work, and there was talk about adding it to their summer festival...not sure how either will pan out in the end. I was thinking about Gaylord, Mackinaw City, Petoskey or Grayling, but Mount Pleasanat and Big Rapids are great ideas too. Not sure which festivals it could be tagged on to or if it even needs a festival though.
Looking forward to meeting you in Alma or Kzoo this year Old Fart

I'd be willing to give you a hand if you want. The closest games to me are down in the Milwaukee area which is 6 hrs. from me. Mackinaw City would be ideal from up here but even Gaylord or Grayling isn't to bad. I could check around the U.P. to see if anyone up here competes and if they'd be interested. Let me know what I can do. Bill Gordon

OldFart,
Are you talking about Rockford around Grand Rapids? I've
contacted them for the last two years and they haven't had any
Heavy Athletics. I hope that will change.

Yes, the Rockford near Grand Rapids. I could have swore I saw something in print about heavy games, but I can't find it. I'll keep looking. Maybe we could get together and do like the Ohio Tundra Games - that sounded pretty cool - just a relaxed, freezing get together. I'll bring the West Michigan haggis (beer brats).

Hey all,
Just a note to say I had to change my name. I used to go under "OldFart" but Dave Carl informs me that I'm not that old. I originally went under that name because I thought I would be one of the oldest - come to find out that I'm about average age for this forum.
Anyway, old or not, I hope to meet you all at a game this Summer. I read one of McBain's posts that said he will do some serious training, Dave Carl has invited me to practice with him - and all the posts show such camaraderie that I wish I would have been involved in these games years ago.
May you all throw far and be healthy enough to have fun this Summer.

I spoke briefly with Henderson about it. They said to go cautious with the St. Andrews folks, as they are known for not getting much done. What I need to do is just say, "Screw it, where doing it." Pick a place, time and start planning. In the meantime, I will talk to Henderson again and resume talks with the island.
Mark my words, there will be a game in Northern Michigan soon.

Allllllrrrriiiggghtttttyyyyy gentleman....I have interest from Beaver Island's Historical Society on this. Here is the gist, each July Beaver Island has a museum week where they celebrate the island history. This year, they want to change the focus slightly to celebrating the island's celtic heritage. The director of the historical society, Bill Cashman, has said the society is very interested in hosting some highland games on july 23 as a part of this. They, and myself since I am helping them form this, just need to know how to proceed.
1) how many of you are interested in highland games on Beaver Island on July 23?
2) Can we dig up all the proper implements (I will make some cabers out of cedar on the island in the spring). And what implements/other gear do we need? I have a trig we can use.
3) What type of insurance should the games have?
4) Prizes? T-shirts? Where to get them and what design?
5) Paid official or volunteer?
6) Invite or open?
7) How do we get all the groupies over?
8) Beer or scotch for the after party?
Gentlemen, things are beginning to move now. Now we must decide if this is the right course.

I'm not a rich man, but I'd be willing to help out with what I can. I just bought a dual 56 WFD/WOB that I would be willing to bring. I also have a nice round 28# stone. All I have to have is assurance that you will be laughing with this rookie (is that a Scottish word for virgin) instead of at me. I think if you use the name "Beaver" in any promotion, you'll have plenty of contestants - maybe not the ones you want, but you'll get some response.

Jeremy,
It looks like July 23 will work for my schedule. What is the cost
of the boat ride over? How long is the ride? It will be
mandatory that there will be a 190lb. class. OK, not a
requirement, just having another chance to compete in
Michigan is enough. The shirts should have C. Snider's picture
on them.
Thanks for all the effort in getting this thing going,

the boat ride over is about 2.5 hours. I think the price is around 50 bucks round trip (the boat is much cheaper than the plane).
What do we have to do to get this as an official game? Snider you want to field this question?
And I won't laugh at you...if anything, my friend, you will be laughing at my sorry ass when I fall over throwing the hammer (it is a common thing for me to do).

well I believe Kurt pauli could answer that.. but as long as you have 5 or more events it consititues as a offical game. Once you know for sure about the game.... post it in the datbase to be add to the athletes stats. also NO DIVISON at the games make it open AM comp. Call me have all the info on the insurance for you. If you like I will work out the detail on that. But you need to keep in close contact if you seriously need help... dont be scared to out source and network. many vaulable people to talk with. the Pauli's is a great source, Holly goodburne, Don from saline.. need to get ahold of these committees. Talk with Peggi dunlop of detroit St Andrews maybe she can guide you in a good direction or even have a tent up there. Need vendors there.. henderson imports, kilty shop in saginaw (989-792-8040), Cynthia L Stephens "celtic artist" http://www.clstephens.biz - www.clstephens.biz or 616-296-1024.
Need flyers.. contact people. I will pass them out at games. need people to take them to games you cant make.. get the word out.. advertise... blah..blah..blah.. U open a huge can of worms but we are all a tight knit group and we'll all help. Joe Mcphie out of South bend (574-876-4720) was a game organizer might help you. I can go on..on..on but I wont.. we need to talk

Well I was going to offer any legal help you might need with contracts, etc. - but forget it now!
People may be wondering, just why do they call Chris Snider "The Crowd Pleaser"?
Well its an axiomatic law of show business that there are two acts that will thrill and delight any crowd: 1) A chimpanzee on rollerskates, or 2) a midget who stumbles around and eventually falls down.
Since most games don't allow animals except for the hearding dogs, chimps are out of the question. That leaves you with the need to find a midget who stumbles around and falls down...That leads to Chris...

I was just at the gentlemens club and they had midget tossing. You grab a midget and throw him as far as you can into a pile of foam. They would'nt let me do the spin.. so i did the glide.
maybe if you pile your sorry @$$ away from those law books and good to the booby bar with me ...you can throw a midget too.
i wonder how you got back into the Saline games... Did notice the grass stained knees

I very much hope to make this one of my first games. I can't wait to meet a crowd pleaser for toothless women, midgets and porn stars. They don't have anything like that in Grand Rapids. Is Snider interested in the games only because they're on "BEAVER" Island? I am excited to go to a games where they have this many wannabe comedians (especially guys who look forward to competing in kilts - do they have enough sports psychologists out there?) and I look forward to meeting a few of you.

Not aruging about wearing a kilt - I just get a kick out of the kind of people the heavy events bring out. Do you ever wonder if some are competing just to wear the kilt?
Besides my ancestry is 50% Irish and 50% Scot - so I am just not allowed to make fun of kilts (unless they're made out of animal skins - those guys worry me).

OK, here's the scoop: I met Chris a few years back and at each game he is ALWAYS entertaining the crowd. I know we all entertain the crowd in our own way. (Last year competing at Alma, when I first saw Derek, I thought he was standing on a bench.) Chris is always grabbing everyone, dancing, and getting the crowd cheering. So, I came up with the term Crowd Pleaser. The icing on the cake had to be last year in Chicago. Chris is always checking out the ladies. At the end of the competition, a somewhat attractive lady, approached him and started talking. He walked over to us with a big smile and informed us she was in the adult film industry. He had her stage name and her number. Anyway, I hope this answers the question as to Crowd Pleaser. Chris goes above his call of duty by making the ladies all feel beautiful. OH the single days.

Gentlemen —
I am just waiting for the final approval for the games from the good folks at the Beaver Island Historical Society. We will be taking the highland games, which we will call Celtic games, onto their Museum week (a celebration of the island's irish heritage). Once I get final approval I will let you know.
It looks like it will be July 23, 9 to ?, with all the usual events, including some "irish" events that Snider was telling me about recently, on Beaver Island. We are shooting to have a a celtic themed party afterwards in the community hall.
This will be an open am with Michigan athletes getting the first dibs. I am trying to keep the participation number down to 10, maybe 11.
So far, the confirmed interest I have received would be from:
Dave Carl
Chris Snider
Pit Rat (what was your real name again?)
Cameron
Bubba Gord (real name?)
Kip Miller, Michigan Moose, John Tracy etal....are you interested? Snider could you contact them for me?
Those listed above, please e-mail me your real name, address, telephone and e-mail so I can keep you in the loop. e-mail pipermcbain@hotmail.com (yes, I am a piper. was for 11 years before joining the games) I will be needing help in getting this sucker going and am looking to stick you guys with some duties (minor, yet helpful to me). This will be the first year of these games, let's make them spectacular. Let's show these islanders what the games are!
Again, I am waiting for final confirmation on this from the islanders. However, the director of the historical society has assured me this aspect will be easy.

My first competition in South Bend, third attempt at the sheaf. I think it was 32' or 33' (just kidding). One of my 3 tines went through my sportskilt and off it came. The crowd cheered. I thought I had made the height. As I looked up, my kilt was flapping like a flag on the end of my fork. Thanks McBain, I had 2 years of therapy to try and forget that moment.
I only saw Derek at Alma last year, if the Highland Games don't pan out for him he should try the NBA.
I would like to invest in a better kilt, but at this point, the sports kilt will do.

I will post a list of the names I have received so far from interested athletes for the First Beaver Island Celtic Games later today. Here are the names I have so far that have been given to me: myself, John Tracy, Chris Snider, Mike Brown, Kip Miller, Dave Carl, Bill Gordon, Patrick Cameron, Derk Wilcox, Dale Gehlman, Damon Barth and Jody Gilbert. I will start making an alternates list in case some of these can't make it or if I was given a wrong name.
Gentlemen, if you see your name on this list and have not sent me your details (name, address and phone) you need to do so within the next few weeks. The drop-dead deadline for these games will be June 1. If I haven't heard from you by then, then I will move on to the alternates list. The reason for the early date is to allow any alternate time to plan for a trip to the island. Plus, it gives me a solid idea of who is coming so I can brag about your awesome abilities to the islanders and others who will be in the audience.
Here is the lowdown on the games: The games will start at 9 a.m., July 23 and last until we are done. Prizes for first, second, third and a booby-prize will be awarded. There will be a demonstration on the games the day before and a small competition for the locals the day after. After the games, the historical society is working on putting together a celtic party (sorry can't spell the gaelic word for this) complete with plenty of refreshments.
The islanders are pretty excited about this, from what I hear. Don't let your rock star status go to your head. And, sorry Chris, I don't think there will be many porn stars there....however there will be plenty of fudgie girls (our name for tourists), which are basically the same thing as a porn star.

Jeremy,
Looks like a good group. It will be good to meet Dale and Bill. Patrick, we will have had a couple of practices by then. Is Chris Snider's face still going to be on the front of the t-shirts?

I'm really getting excited about competing in these games, with all the talk about drinking, porn stars, and midgets. I'm hoping to see a midget porn star. Do we need to get reservations for the boat ride and campground fairly early? I'm guessing we need to be there on the 22nd sometime. Bill

no reservations can be made in advance for the boat or the campgrounds...WELCOME TO BEAVER ISLAND.
As long as you are there by 9 a.m., July 23, I will be a happy man. Although, the less of you that show up the better I will look on the field.

Around 60 or 70 in the winter. I usually put it on my expense account so I don't pay attention, sorry. The Emerald Isle and the Erin Motel are open right now. The lodge is close (nice place though).

Jeremy,
What is your advice, it seems as some of the others are hitting the motel scene. Should we wait? I wouldn't might camping, but bringing the camping gear would be a little bit of a hassle. Any suggestions?

Carl,
Not sure to be honest. I still haven't even figured out where I am staying. On the island, it just seems to work itself out. Are you bringing the family? If so, I guess you could go the motel/hotel route. The problem is most of the motels are closed. But, if you are coming on your own, I wouldn't worry...we can find a place for you. Maybe a bunch of us can nab a camp site or something. Or if we got a few people together we could rent the "apartment" (actually a really big hotel room with two bedrooms, a kitchen and a living room) at the Emerald Isle. Actually, the apartment idea sounds good to me if anyone wants to go in on it. It might be too expensive to do alone.

I had to go the motel route - I have an infant son who will be about 9 months then and is still nursing. My wife insists on coming to see me in one of my first games - like the pressure isn't on enough. Hey Dave, if you can't find a spot - we have a king-sized bed at the motel - you can sleep between me and the wife - but she snores something awful.

Jeremy,
I plan on going by myself. Maybe the apartment thing would work.
Patrick, it would be a snore fest. My wife tells me I sound like a chainsaw. I'm sure it will work out. I may check into the hotel/motel scene.

Jeremy,
I thought I should act quickly. There are limited amount of
rooms available. I have just Saturday the 23rd reserved at the
Harbor View. The lady new all about the competition. When I
asked for the Jeremy McBain special she said you have it (she
added $20 to the rate). Anyway I will call back this evening and
see about Friday night. Either off the record or on, how is
this motel in your opinion?
The word on the competition must be spreading fast.

Ladies,
I still am unsure about Friday night's lodging. The lady at
Harbor View quoted me a price of $60 a night. She said she
was probably the lowest on the island during peak summer
times. She also knew McBain so I don't know what that says
about her character. Snider, you must be rolling in the money.
I hope the islanders pick up dinner after the competition.
PC, the crowd pleaser can be as crazy or as normal as he
needs to be I have seen him act both ways. Although, I am
sure it is more difficult for him to act sane. No offense Chris.
