If they do that, then Jess moves up to 2nd and get the WFH Championship Title. Don't know if they'd ever do it, but it would be neato. As for Shannon, since she did test positive for "juice", does that mean she will be banned from the games for a few years or something? I know she retired and all, but who's to say this test had nothing to do with her retirement? Who's to also say she took it intentionally or if it was in the supplements she was taking? Only she knows the truth. Again, I(and Jess) still like her on the everyday personal level. On the athletic level it sucks. I'm not going to yell and cause a big ruckus about it. Hell, I'm sure I've thrown against guys who "ride the needle" and beat me in the games. Honestly, I don't care. If that's what they wanna do, then cool. I'll be healthy and fit, when they are dieing of various forms of cancer and stuff. All for some metals, some swords, and some cheering. |

one other thing that agm(adam) has repeated numerous times are athletes are held resposible for anything they ingest-can't claim it was super-duper metabolic whey protein when it was protein powder sprinkled with winny powder

Jim
I am fully aware of the prior lawsuits involving Gar and the SAAA. I downloaded and read all the depositions, which I seem to recall you posting on the old SAAA board. I talked to Gar on many occasions prior to the actions. I have also known Gar for about 16 years. I have known Rod since the 70's, when he and I played football for the old Sacramento Buffalos, and he was my training partner for the Games for about 8 years. True, there are many groups involved in staging the Games. There is no reason why they can't get together and agree on a drug policy and a testing policy. As to the liability issue, has anyone lost their house, or their job as of yet, I don't think so, so it is a mute point. Saying you are "anti-drug" without testing is like taking a shower with a raincoat on. Sh*t or get off the pot. Mike Woody Former SAAA Board Member |

Not a moot point at all. I am speaking from experience - current painful experience. Though beyond that, I can not comment (on advice from council) as the action is still pending. This is why I've been hammering away at the liability issue and insulating yourselves from harm. I have not been speaking hypothetically at all. Thankfully for me, I keep meticulous records. Mr. Woody, your "sh*t or get off the pot" remark betrays your virginity regarding litigation in the USA. I have personal experience on both sides (plaintiff/defendant) & can tell you that the only ones that always win are the lawyers - both of them get paid regardless. The law allows all parties to be slandered in the attorneys' case presentations, & these statements are public record & can be published by any second rate newspaper that cares to do that. Inevitably both parties are diminished in the public eye, & one party is penalized financially by a jury that rarely represents either one's "peers", or has a true understanding of the award's magnitude.

Look guys, the reality for MOST "organizations" and AD's is that they don't have the money for testing and are not willing to incur the liabilty that follows. The West Coast clearly has the most organized and official sanctioning body - for the rest of "us" going through the whole process and expense of testing and subsequent banning/litigation just isn't worth it. Most of the AD's I throw with are out there to make a little money and get some fresh air and enjoy the company. Many of the games are also not willing to incur that expense/liability and would probably rather drop the heavy events then risk a law suit, they don't look at is as a "sport" anyways - it's more of a historical re-enactment from their perspective. Maybe that's not right, but that's the way it is. |

I hate to touch this post for a malady of reasons. But let us get back to showing some love here. To say you were happy about another's misfortune is terrible. I don't care what happened and what they did, please think here. I lifted in power meets for years, they are boring and there is no love in the sport with the competitors, not the kind of love there is in this sport. Let us not go that direction. I certainly would not teach my 10 year old hate or to have joy in others sorrow. I want her to hear laughter and fun with my brothers and for her to see the joy in sport. I had a friend a couple years ago be banned in this sport for a couple years from a test in Pleasington, I truly cared for the guy, and I never thought if he did not take something I would have beat him, he is a great athlete and it did not come from some potion, but my loss was worse, I did not get the joy and fun of competing with him after that and I still miss him. Get your minds right here. Happy Holidays to my brothers in iron, miss you all right now. Now how far do you think K monster can toss a turkey?

Mr Flanagan
If I am anything regarding civil litigation, a vigin is not it.I retired after 28 years as a probation officer. Everyday, I made decisions involving people's lives, and their freedom. I conducted hundreds of searchs, and arrested hundreds of people, thus exposing myself to liability on a daily basis. Had I worried about any potential liability, I would have been unable to function at an acceptable level. The secret is to cover your *ss, and to make sure your actions are legal and approriate. Over the years, I was named as a co-defendant in a number of multi million dollar lawsuits, and spent many hours in depositions. None of those suits prevailed, because I always made sure I was covered. |

Problem is Mike, it still costs money to fight the suits. None of the organisations have money to spare. I certainly didn't have extra money to waste defending myself. Even though I keep meticulous records and cover my ass quite well, I'm still out money; my own money. Comparing your work as a PO or mine on the LAPD to the highland games is apples and oranges. You or I get sued for something related to our work and the agency steps in, or the union, or both. Someone comes after you for your work in the HG, and you are on your own. In this, I am no virgin. The bottom line is twofold. "Highland athletic organisations" are no more than a group of like minded people working cooperatively towards a goal. There are no "Highland athletic organisations" that I am aware of that would be in a financial position to afford to defend itself and its board members from a legal attack. Because of these realities, the "sport" will remain as it always has been, very local. If anyone doesn't like the way this whole episode is being handled, vote with your feet; as Carlos has pledged to do. |

But, if everyone already signs the waiver, and Pays for their own test, via the increase entry fee from 20 to 50 dollars, wouldn't that take care of it? Do the waivers need to be changed to cover failures and you waive the right to sue, counter sue, and kind of sue? If that cannot be done, then all the talk in the world about drug testing is a waste of time, and everyone is suspected, and if they do use drugs, so what? We should be considered the same as the strong man shows and end it there. I don't see how you can self police except by peer pressure, and then you'd be open for suit again. Screwed if you do, and screwed if you don't.

I think the payoff is 100, 75, 50. I could be wrong though.
I know if they decide to take titles and money away, the Jess would get
something like $175 more. If they do, cool, if not, no
biggie. Either way, we both had fun out there and will go back
next year. I gotta defend my Farmer's Walk title!

I do not think the reason for people wanting the second place thrower to get to have the title is for money.. With our sport we are not funded enough to have drug testing or to have huge dollar prizes. Our sport as it has always has been is about strength and honor.. I compete in the sport for many reasons 2 of those being, the storied history of those who went before me and what they stood for, fighting against "oppression" and the honor that took.. Secondly for the fun of competing with good people..
I feel that the point is that in a sport of honor and good competition cheaters are really looked down on.. As I see it we take the advise of those who posted before, we make it as clear as we can as a body of athletes that we feel it is wrong to cheat to win, we have a form at the entry table that athletes are encouraged to sign that states they acknowledge these are drug free games and that they agree they are drug free. The rest is between them and God... I think this thread is good conversation as I would think it might keep some from even trying the stuff as they have seen an"Icon" of our sport be brought down to a level below any that could be reached by poor results in a games. Just another money point, as I run the Womens World Championships I would love to be able to test these ladies to make sure that we are doing our part ot keep it clean, but I have to weigh the cost of what brings in money for us, and what is only a cost and not a return. Also if I am trying to get the best throwers here I need to use any moneys I have for the event to go to getting them here to compete.. But again as others have said keep throwing out ideas as one may actually work.. |

Im not sure how to post to all of this. I knew Shanon when we threw at
SSu in the late 80"s. She was as feirce of a competer as
she is now. Her lifts were big for a lady. And her
workouts were touf to match. I have always liked Shanon and
she has always been great to my kids. Theres the
love. Now for the Im pissed off as a father of three girls.
Two of withc ( 13 and 11 ) that wanted to be just like Shanon. Shes the
best of the best. Well old dad her says ZIll introduce you get a few
pics of you with her, she will talk to you. All good.
Now remember girls if you work hard like Shanon you might be a champ in
the sport of your choice or other sports. And I go on to say its
a life thing with hard studying and so on. Girls eat it up. So do
I. Now I have to tell them that Shanon has been hit with a
positive test. This just crushes them. No Say it isnt so
Dad. What can I say. Well kids maybe the test was rong, we sure
hope so and so on. But Dad what if its right. O Boy here it comes. They
havent said it but I think it. Do these girls have to juice to get into
a collage, do they have to compeat juiced up like others just to
keep up what do I say. Im pissed. These girls need other
Ladys to look up to. The role modles to follow. They might
never make it but they will try. But not juiced. I take a step
back and colect my thoughts and the talk begins. Juice bad, work hard.
They hav good role modles in my wife and me. We talk some more.
We love Shanon and hope its just a mess up. That is our prayer.
But if not then we come to the Third part. Im sorry for shannon. I
realy am. But if Carlos is right and the rules say that if some one
tests positive in a nother sport then they get the boot. Noquestions
there. It should cover the suits I think ( but Im not a
layer) If this test was publicly known before Pleasonton
than the second place finisher should move up as should the rest.
I dont think that they will feel the glory of the day but they should
have there rightfull places handed to them. Other games will have
to be changed if there were any. Thats the
rules......... I do not envy any of the ADs that have to
follow through with this but will respect them more ( not that
they know who I am ) I wish them well. This is a mess. But
my family still loves ya Shannon. But if true
then the love is still there but not the admaration and trust and
it has ruined and tainted sports for a couple of little girls in this
house hold. You wont be there number one any more. We do hope and
pray that its all just a screw up

Always let it be known that you can get damn far without drugs on sheer
talent and intelligent hard work. Drugs obviously help, but alot can be
done without them. I remember being absolutely gutted when I was 15,
just saw a guy put a new African record in the shot (this on a day I
had just thrown a PB and won my first big title) and then get bust for
Stanozol the next week or so. I honestly wanted to quit throwing,
but I didn't and I'm glad I made that decision.
