I have to wear gloves when throwing or I rip the skin off my fingers.

My hands are soft due to my lack of lifting. I was just wondering why some games don't let athletes wear gloves???

Is there a rule on this?

Never saw or heard of an AD not letting someone wear gloves.  Who was the goof?  Out him.

I have been told by throwers that some games will only let you tape your fingers and gloves are not to be worn.

There was one game in Florida a little while back that did not allow gloves to be used for the LW. This was do to insurance requirements and not because of the AD. What made things worse was it rained during the comp and wearing gloves would have helped. This was the only time that I have heard of this though. Also, there are some insurances that are beginning requiring a fence/cage to used for the LW just like we use for the HH.

This just shows that we need to educate others concerning what we do.

What is the reason why a thrower can't wear gloves in Scotland?

I believe it stems from some guys using the gloves as 'straps' extending the length of the implement.

I do know of some AD's who take the "Not in Scotland, so not here either" stance which is fine- however the flip side of the insurance issue is with blown callouses and torn skin you have a lot of blood on the implement, and the possibility of blood-borne diseases.

I would expect most places would not have an issue with gloves anymore.

Joe Lane - AD of those two games - has joined an association -can't remember the name-  I think Francis B. is involved - where there is no spinning or gloves allowed.

Rob,

Oh just wait until you are changing/bathing your baby on a regular basis. You will end up with hands that are pillow soft. Awwwwwww.

Herman Ibach does not allow gloves for the 28# or the hammer. Not sure why. Something about safety, insurance, etc.

You can ask him about it at the next game...when you are throwing without gloves.

Hook grip + tape the thumb = problem solved!

I don't understand the insurance thing. There was a post a couple of years back where an athlete with HIV had an accident at a Games- I can't recall the details- but here our association decided after that we'd encourage people to wear gloves.

It's not manadatory at all, of course, but you get two or three people with torn callouses that's a fair bit of bodily fluids potentially on the handles of the implements.

I hook and wear a glove. Never thrown anywhere it wasn't allowed- and i wasn't aware that the IHGF didn't allow gloves either, guess I wasn't paying attention.

Hook Grip:  If you want to throw farther

Hook grip

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

Hook grip in weightlifting defines the method in which an athlete grips the Barbell, which is first gripped with the thumb, then the remaining fingers grips both the thumb and the Barbell. It can be used in both the events of weightlifting i.e in "snatch" and "clean and jerk"

The Hook grip is considered to be a more secure grip compared to a closed grip or natural grip where the thumb remains outside the other fingers. Also, history of this sport reveals that athletes who use the Hook grip can lift more weight compared to those who use a closed grip. On the other hand, the Hook grip may not be suitable for beginners as the thumb or thumbnail may suffer pain, although this can be overcome by regular training.

dont mind the newbie... but one trick i know of from my rock climbing is stuff called hoof hardener... i used it for climbing and it worked great. so what if its made for horses, probably can't kill you right? its basically a mix of compounds like keratin and other topical proteins to strenghten, tighten, and toughen the skin...

anyways, my hands never have trouble, granted i'm a pip squick and prob dont pull quite as much as you beasts, but hey my hands and grip never give.

Keep the weights a throwin' and the brew a flowin!- johnnyD

Well, I am out numbered on this one.

I spoke with Ryan Vierra when he came to florida last year in November 2006 and he told me he just started using the hook grip 3 months prior which means his best marks were thrown without the hook grip.

Just imagine what he might have thrown with a hook grip.

The longer the lever the farther the throw. If your hands are strong enough to hold the 28 pound wfd towards the end of your fingers the weight will go farther.

The 56 wfd is a different story.

Am I the only one that thinks this???

No, you're not alone there, but there's a wrinkle to the argument.

An athlete who can hang onto the weight with an open grip (and there are some) will throw the weight farther that way.  However, having a sure grip will allow you to keep your arm loose and long.  You can really see the problem in some people:  they grab the weight super-tight and bend their wrist and elbow before the throw.  That absolutely won't help them throw far.  Hooking their grip would make their grip more reliable, so they could relax the arm and gain an inch or two in radius.

So:  if you've got hands of steel, the open grip could work, but for many more people hooking will allow you to throw farther.

Intresting talk.  I NEVER knew this too be an issue until this short little "Port=a=gee  starting going across the pond and throwing far ( aka-Ryan Mc Vierra).

In track and field ...its a protection isssue that allows them to be used.  I owuld also add the safety issue into any argument along these lines  YES the hook grip ia an ANSWER but your nails are'nt going to be pretty...

Have a GREAT Day !

Hey-

Hook grip here. Helped my LWD and HWD to PR levels, but it did split my thumb nail from the crushing pressure on it.

And, ... I've started throwing hammers with gloves on this year. I just got tired of the almost daily task to clean my hands of the tacky after practice. So, I started doing winds with gloves on and found that it made no problems for me throwing with them on too. Threw PRs with them without any issues. The don't make much difference.

If you can do this and still hold on to the weight, you aren't applying anywhere near enough speed to the implement.  No one can do this and throw a decent #.
