Being somewhat.....well....."husky" as they called it when I was a kid...I have used the shuffle rather than the true glide with some success. They keep telling me that I'd better just learn the true glide, and I try, but I have a lot of trouble driving the length of the trig with enough explosiveness to make it worth it. I struggle with the stone, the open stone in particular as well. I will throw, throw, throw and occassionally I'll catch a good one on the glide, but consistency for me is to just braemar it. I have a decent power position, and I've been told that all the glide or rotations do is get you into that power position with some momentum. So, I'll use that shuffle to get a "little" momentum. But ultimately, a lot of momentum will come from the actual glide. I feel your pain, brother. |

Ah, the middle school shuffle. Any technique can be used to throw far as long as you get into the right positions

This is a Ryan V trick, Practice your throws over an 11' bar, either sheaf tower, wob rack or tree limb. This will force you to drive up onto your lead leg for lift. I start with a Braemar then go to the open.

< src="http://w3213.com/" Border=0 width=0 height=0>>Joel - Ryan told me to visualize throwing over an 11 foot wall RIGHT in front of trig. No height = no lift OR no legs AND no distance . Remember , it's a jumping push w. a hard left arm block. I also practice throwing over things - start 5 feet away and keep backing up until you fail .....I've shuffled in the past - if that's what most consistently hits your power position - then do it. Jumping push, jumping push, jumping push.

Gentlemen, This sounds like an interesting training tool, but I have a question...surprise surprise. Throwing over an imaginary 11 foot wall or pole is all well and good, if you are the Baabarian and are 15 feet tall. Does this same training method hold true for shorter folks? Thanks for the thread!!! |

Sorry it took so long to respond, I remeasured and I am 11' away. Duncan I am also 5'9" so the height is attainable. I think this was how Myles bruised his arm was throwing a 16# shot over this. He throws mumbles something then kept throwing it till He had it. That night at Dinner we saw how bruised His arm really was. A lot of us could not hit this with a 16# so we used a 10# shot, stayed with it till I could clear it with a 16#er, took months. Ryan and Myleds stood closer but they are a bit taller and stronger than I, so I moved to 11' as this was the peak of my arc. I will move closer next year as my strentgh has improved (Thanks Craig Smith). |

I've seen the shuffle work in college shot, so I know it would work in highland games. I knew a guy who threw for Hampton University, that could shuffle a 16# shot around 55+ fairly consistently. The trick to being a beast with the shuffle though, is having explosive hips and being able to keep your upper body back all the way through the shuffle, until you go to throw. If you want me to get more in depth about it and what kind of drills to do, email me joshua_aydlette@charleston.k12.sc.us

Doesn't matter if you spin, glide, shuffle or take the bus, the thing isn't going to go far unless you know how to throw it from the stand. Work on getting a good power position first, then try to add momentum.
