I take allot of crap about wearing a Kilt and lifting all year in the work place. I have broad shoulders so no worries plus most of my co-workers are afraid of me because they cant close the #2 on my desk and I can do it for reps.

Im having an argument (conversation) with a customer of mine the other day and they are shocked “someone like me is helping them financially”. Meaning strong guys are dumb. I’ve thought about this for a few days and thought I would see if anyone has had a similar experience. Im not the a huge guy by any standards and certainly don’t think Im real smart. But I do what I do for a living pretty well. I know there are some super smart athletes out there just curious how diverse groups we have.

I have an MBA and I work as a marketing & business strategy consultant.  It has always been a challenge...try being 5'8" and 250 with a 20+" neck and kaztraps that touch your ears.  I have learned over the years that I have to speak quickly and immediately establish expertise or meetings with new clients are over before they begin.  I have even had someone ask what was wrong with me....if I had growths on my shoulders.  It kind of sucks, but if you prove yourself they definitely remember you.

143 IQ, Mensa, 4.0 in college, and now I have my own real estate investment/brokerage firm. Not the strongest guy, but getting there.

None of it means crap if you are not happy though. And you cant take any of it with you.

Ha. I have hair past my rear and am big (I got the 20"+ neck as well but no kaztraps like Mike, just slightly large ones). But I graduated at the top of my class and took away most of the academic achievement awards when I graduated Law School yet I look like a thug because I am big and have over a 3 foot long braid running down my back.

I am a high school teacher and when I meet new people and tell them that, most of them guesss that I am a P.E. teacher.  None of the guess that I teach math for a living.

Of course, after I tell them I teach math, then I get the stereo-typical reaction to that.

People only say stuff like that because they feel inadequate. They try to make themselves feel better by pointing out negative characteristics of people who are better than them in a certain way. And usually they just throw out some baseless stereotype as a gut reaction. You should feel bad for him... it's not his fault really... society taught him that. If you can't win, the game must not be worth playing.

J. Barlow is correct.  As a PhD student (Criminology) I have witnessed what kinds of bias students bring to the classroom; it is reflected in their conversations and attitudes, and perhaps of more immediate consequence, this bias shines through in their papers and presentations.  It is that same bias at the root of these stereotypes.  Yes, we are men who walk around in what my easily be miscontrued as a skirt.  Yes, many of us hug as a greeting. And yes, some of us make obscenely loud and distressing noises when we throw.  But as this thread has demonstrated, our real strength is between our ears, and even if we carry some extra weight around the middle or have a freakishly large physique, we should never be underestimated.

From Braveheart "I know you can fight...but it's our wits that make us men."

Respectfully,

Duncan McCallum

I'm a biologist.  Is that close?

John Richard, who no longer throws, is a rocket scientist of some sort.  He worked on missle systems at Dalhgren, VA.

Steve,

Ha, that's funny. I get somewhat the opposite reaction. I'm 6'3" and 245, and people say "you throw that heavy stuff?" In real life, I have a B.S. in Journalism, and M.B.A., I sell telephone systems to business, and I teach college writing and management classes for a living. I agree on the stereotypes, but I just get a chuckle out of it.

And yes, there are some really smart guys on here, like Dr. Wayne, D. Barron, and a number of other engineers, lawyers, etc. It's pretty good company, actually.

Me:  High IQ but I get bored easy.

In terms of professions>student, cardio-vascular technician, kitchen & bath designer for remodeling and new construction, commisioned artist and writer, factory assembler, buyer, senior buyer, and manufacturing supervisor.

We have to be careful not to define ourselves by our profession.  At least I do.  Looking at my career path I guess I'm a schizophrenic.  But I have been blessed to do well in each pursuit.

This not a question of who is smarter its just amazing to me how people judge you based on your phys-app. If your a big guy you must be a big dumb ox and can only pick potatos and load the wagon. for the guys in any kind of law enforcemnt or correctional officers being big probably has some advantages. however im sure it has its draw backs to some guy with small mans syndrome thinks he can take you down because he has somthing to prove.

How many of you Officers have this problem? Ken C? Craig S?

No matter what you do well, people will try and knock you down.  They all have a cousin or brother who benches 5 pounds more, is a little bigger and is better looking.  I have noticed and gotten a lot of those as I have stretched my later 30's.  The "when are you going to quit that" question.  And being sensitive, I don't want to make them feel bad about themselves, so you ignore them and move on.  Or show them the axe in the truck.  Both work fine with a little stink eye.

I'm a Psychologist that has my academic background in the study of individual differences, or how IQ tests work and or don't.  I'm the guy that gets to decide how smart you are.  I've done a bunch of stuff about which variables have the strongest correlations to IQ scores using a bunch of freaky statistics blah blah.

Right now though about 90% of my job has morphed into being a Special Education administrator.  Pay is better, but it's boring as hell.
