My name is Ryan Huddleston and I am a second year thrower out of OKC. I am starting this because I have never kept a training log before and am looking for a way to keep track of my progress, keep myself accountable, and get as much insight as I can to my training. I was able to make the jump from the B's to the A's this year, and always working on trying to get better. I appreciate any ideas and feedback, and am looking forward to participating in this sport as long as I can.

I had some spare time today so I put in a quick throws session.
Standing: x8 all were 31-34 range
Lwd: x8 all were low to mid 50's
Light hammer: x 6 all were 89-92

Not a bad throws session for me, as I am trying to work on some technique issues so not throwing 100%. I am hoping to be able to get together with the Irvin brothers here in OKC tomorrow and get some coaching.

Awesome Ryan!! I just started mine a few weeks ago. It was great competing against you in KC. Are you doing Topeka?

Posted By: Hudd10
Date Posted: 8/01/14 at 4:44pm
Thanks man, KC was a blast. I don't know about Topeka yet, just started a new job and still trying to figure out scheduling. Right now I definitely want to hit Tulsa, McPherson, Kirksville, and Celtober, but I am also looking for other games. And I've been checking out your log, you are putting up big numbers. I'm going to have to step up a level to hang with you big guy.

Haha, thanks man but the only ones that count are in the database. I'm also going to try for tulsa and mcpherson. Good luck with your new job!!

Are you guys coming to Springfield,mo on October 11 for the first Ozarks highland game?

I'm not sure about the Ozarks game yet. I've been looking at it, but can't pull the trigger either way yet. I will say that the t-shirt design they have is legit.

Got another throws practice in today. Threw Open, Hwd, Lwd, and Light Hammer. Still not hitting the numbers I'm looking for, but I'm told that's what practice is for. Jeremy Irvin gave some good coaching points today, and I'm hoping once I get my technique issues settled I will be able to move up to start hitting the numbers I'm looking for.

Open: x8 with farthest being just under 39 ft. Pretty happy with this, its just under my PR. Need to incorporate more hips and I'm still releasing too flat.

Hwd: x8 Consistency was great. Literally hit within the same 6 inches with 6 of the throws. Only problem was it at 25 ft. Had 1 at 26. Still finishing blocked off...... really blocked off. Trying to keep my first turn as tight as possible and focus on staying long, hoping that will help.

Lwd: x15?? Most around mid 50's. Pretty frustrated with this. I'm slow, my release angle is flat, and apparently you are supposed to use those leg things to throw the weight. Obviously haven't figured this out yet.

Light hammer: X6 all between 85-90. Not bad practice numbers for me. Winds feel good, but I narrowed my stance quite a bit to get more knees and hips into the winds (again with these mysterious leg things), and so the balance feels a little off. Hoping for good things from this once I get the feel back.

Plan is to take it easy tomorrow and start back at it Monday morning.

Got a quick workout in this morning.

Stretch, hip mobility

Hang Clean:
225 x 2
245 x2 x2
265 x2 x2
285 x2?? Got them pulled up but couldn't quite shoot my elbows enough to stand with it. Definitely something I need to get stronger with.

Then threw in a quick ab session

Trust me on these...when I discovered how big the disconnect was in the middle I added some kind of dynamic core exercise to every workout.  At least one or two.

It makes a difference.

Stretch/shoulder flexibility work

Bench: working on explosive movement
225 X 2
245 X 2
265 X 2
225 X 5

5 X 10 hanging lateral leg raises
5 X 8 seated lat pull downs
2 X 15 triceps push downs

Throwing:
HWD X 8 all between 24 and 27. Getting more consistent, but still soooo blocked off.
Lwd X 8 all mid 50's. Still slow and blocked.

I'm trying to stay longer and focus on a straight line sprint thinking that may help my right foot get down and allow me to get my left over and finally open up.

Throw session today focusing on stones. All my throws were with a 18.5lb stone.

B stone x 8 all around 35
Open x 8 most around 36 but ended with one around 39.
WOB x 5

I'm really working on the angle of my release on stones. I think I'm blocking low with my left arm which pulls my chest down every time, so working on keeping that high. Pretty happy with the 39 O throw with this stone. The goal is to hit 40 by the end of the season.

Stretch/Hip Mobility

Squat (working on speed/explosion)
225 x 2
315 x 2
365 x 2
405 x 2

Abs

Throws:
LH x 10 - best of 96
Couple more at 95. Narrowed my stance to include more hip/knee flex. Timing still feels a little off, but feels like I'm able to put more speed on the head.

Group throwing session today

B Stone x 5 best of 31.5 (22lb stone)
Open x 5 had 2-3 that were over 39
HWD x 5 best of 26
LWD best of 57

Really happy about the consistency with the Open. Other than that just glad I could get more reps in to fix technique issues.

225 X 2
245 X 2

155 X 2
175 X 2 X 1

Clean
175 X 5
225 X 2 X 2
245 X 2
265 X 2

These felt ok, just have to do them more often. Hard to get any weight on snatches when you do them every 3 months.

Throws:
HWD X 12 still working technique. Will start thinking distance a couple weeks out from Tulsa.

Starting Crossfit tonight with the wife. Been a while since I did anything resembling cardio, so there's a decent chance I puke tonight.

15 air squats
15 superman

3 rounds 90 seconds on/90 seconds rest

5 hanging knee raises
45 jump ropes

Overall felt pretty good, except for the burpees. Those are evil, pure pea soup head spinning in circles evil. I hate them.

Messed around with some shoulders last night at CrossFit. The wife and I are going through the elements class so she can learn proper barbell technique, and I figured I might be able to pick something up by learning from someone with a different perspective.

Shoulders:
Strict press:
135 x 3
155 x 3
185 x 1 x 1

Push Press:
205 x 1 x 1
225 x 1
245 x 1
265 x 1

Push Jerk:
285 x 1...missed the lockout. This will fall quickly

9/9/14
Shoulder mobility
Hang Clean:
bar x 8
135 x 5
185 x 3 x 2 x 2
225 x 2 x 2
245 x 1 x 1 x 1
265 x 1 x 1

Lwd: 10-12 reps. Under 2 weeks from getting back in competitions, so focusing on speed, not fouling, speed, and getting faster.

Did some deads last night at Crossfit, so I figured I would stick with the theme.

Stretch/PVC roller

Deadlift:

225 x 5
285 x 3
325 x 3
365 x 6

RDL x 8 x 8

Got some stones in today
B stone x 8
Open x 6

Felt blah. I've had a big break between games, and I'm feeling the training grind. Really ready to get back in competition and get after it.

Dunc, nothing but love bud. I'm just sad I didn't get a hug before you went to the great white north.

Tried to have a competition like throw day getting ready for Tulsa. Didn't quite work out, but got some good work it.

Braemar X 6
Open X 6
HWD X 6
LWD X 3
HH X 5
LH X 2

Overall pretty good day. Hit good distances for me. Tulsa is going to be freaking stacked, I'm going to have to throw out of my mind just to stay out of last place.

Sooo, went to Crossfit last night thinking we were getting another coaching session, so a real light work, barely break a sweat. Nope. That's what I get for thinking.

Comp walk-thru for Tulsa

ScotFest in Tulsa OK:

Bstone- 30.11
Open- 36?? Not was I was hoping for since I hit 38-39 consistently with the same stone in practice a few days before.
HWD- 28
LWD- 56
HH-upper 60's. Lost the grip on the fist one and went straight into the fence. Then proceeded to tacky the BJesus out of it then couldn't let it go.
LH-upper 80's. See above
Caber- no turn on the qualifier, but all my picks were solid and I actually got ok speed with one, now just need to get some sort of timing.
WOB- 11. Had 2 over 12 but left both in front of the bar.
Sheaf- Cleared 20 easy, then the wheels fell off. I am not checking at all, and losing the bag straight off to the right every time.

Any day you get to compete is a great day, and this was an awesome group of guys to throw with. That being said, I wasn't real happy with my performance. I can't just throw ok and expect anything but to get my teeth kicked in. I learned a lot, mainly that I've got to learn the difference between training throwing and competition throwing. At this level I've got nothing to lose by going all out on a throw, so I need to quit thinking and just get after it. Really looking forward to McPherson this weekend against another stacked field.

Body felt beat up after Tulsa, so I didn't go to the gym, just did CrossFit on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

Warm-up/Stretch

Bench:
135 x 8
175 x 5
200 x 5
215 x 5
235 x 5

Kept it lighter and just focused on moving the bar quickly.
Superset: 3 x 8
Dips
TBar rows
DB incline

McPherson 9/27:

An absolutely beautiful day to throw. Couldn't have asked for better weather.
HWD-27
LWD-56
B stone-29
O stone-36
WOB- 11
HH-70 ?
LH-88
Caber-80 deg
Sheaf- No height = awesomeness

Weight weren't bad, technique feels good, still just slow. I did the MSA for the first time on the Open and was within 2 feet of my PR, so I'm liking what I did with this. Hammers were abysmal. Caber felt good, was actually being too aggressive with my picks, but this is still moving in the right direction for me. WOB felt good, just didn't finish. All 3 attempts at 12 had the height, but left every one of them in front of the bar. Sheaf was a brand new bag, and just couldn't compensate for how tight it was.

2 more game until off-season.

Monday night 9/29

Crossfit:
Warm-up- 2 rounds of
200 m run
5 burpees
20 second handstand holds

10 minutes to work up to 3 rep max
Clean
Snatch

Workout-8 minute AMRAP
5 push press (185 lbs)
10 pullups
20 kettlebell swings (55 lb)

Tuesday: Throw session

Stones
Braemar x 8....working on pushing up and out with the hips, and actually using my legs
Open x 8....After working with Francis Brebner I think the MSA spin may be the way to go for me. These felt ok, just slow. I can already tell I need to bend my legs more, and make sure I keep separation between my legs and upper body.

Sheaf x 15....This has been a disaster for me all year. Not consistent at all. I think I figured some things out, but I'm still just as likely to shank it to the left as I am to throw it correctly.

All in all, not a bad week so far. Just trying to relax, get out of my head, and enjoy doing this again. Really looking forward to Kirksville this weekend, it will be good times.

Hudds,

You're coming to Celtober right?  Come in a day early (if you can) and bring your gear.  We can work on a few things if you want.

Dunc, I will be at Celtober. That would be awesome. I think I can swing it, but I will let you know for sure when it gets closer. I also want to run over my off-season plan with you, see what you think. Thanks bud.

Kirksville Highland Games:

The HASA crew once again put on a great game. Was pretty cold when we got out there, but warmed up once you started moving around. This game was important for me to go to as it was Sean Betz's final game. Sean was the guy that got me into the sport, and has been a huge mentor to me. On top of that, due to the low number of A's at the game, the A's actually threw with the Pro group. By far the coolest experience of my short Highland Games career. I learned more in 1 day than I have in the 2 years I've been competing. Every one of the Pros that were present were awesome, and the coaching and camaraderie is something I will remember for a long time.

B stone: 30-31 ish. A big stone but got an OK push
O stone: 34. Spun first throw, took it easy. Slipped on the second. Stood on the 3rd.
HWD: 28. Pretty happy with this event lately. Consistently hitting in this range.
LWD: 56. Scratched first 2, so took a little off this one to get a score on the board.
HH: I may have broken 70. The wheels have totally fallen off my hammers right now.
LH: 88. See above.
Sheaf: no height, but opened at 28. My PR is 26. Good news is I got some great advice from the Pros and had the height, just left it in front.
WOB: Nailed 12. After some good Pro advice again, had some good pulls at 13. Again had the height, just didn't finish.

1 more game this season. Feel so much better now that a few weeks ago. Excited to finish up then start getting after the offseason goals.

Sounds good Duncan. I actually just got another toy yesterday, so that's no problem.

10/17
Stretch/PVC roller

Deads:
Worked up to 1st set of 285 x 3
330 x 3
375 x 5
Not big weight, but felt smooth and easy. I'll take it since I'm horrible about actually dead lifting, and average about 2.7 sessions a month.

Lat Pulldowns 3x10

Got an indoor shot in yesterday
Stands x8
Spins x6

Absolutely stoked about the indoor shot. My stones need a ton of reps, and now I can keep throwing all off season. WIN.

Took the weekend off.

Stretch/PVC roller
Squat
135 x 5
225 x 5
275 x 3
315 x 3
340 x 5
380 x 3
430 x 3

Stones this morning
Stand x 5
Spin x 5
distances were ok, spin was a little low, but still so new at it I expect a lot of fluctuation. Also with the squats I'm not going to get a ton of pop from the legs.

Throws this evening:
HH x 5- felt ok, but still a little off balance. Need to bend the knees/counter more
LH x 5- felt better than it has in months. Hit numbers in practice I haven't seen since spring
LWD x 5- felt fast, but a little out of control. Need to get lower and be an athlete
WOB x 5- feeling better, but still struggling with timing of the pull
Sheaf x 10- see LH. Got some top notch coaching techniques from the Burchetts @ Kirksville. Can't say enough how big time this was. Only shanked 1, and I knew what I did as soon as it happened. This has been in my head all year, and I finally feel ok with it.

Absolutely stoked for Celtober this weekend.

I'm right there with you Jon. Wish you could have made it to Kirksville, the A's got to throw with the Pros. I spent the entire day filming, asking questions, getting coached up by some of the best Pros around. It was freaking sweet. Now I get to go do the same thing to some of the best Am's around. Really excited to cap off the season this way.

Got some upper body in the morning

Bench
215 x 5
245 x 3
275 x 3
295 x 1

TBar row 3 x 6
Lat Pulldown 3 x 6

Threw some more LH this morning. Finally hit some ok numbers last night, and wanted to build upon that a little. Got 8 throws in, first 3 were money time. Literally haven't hit those distances since May. Dropped a few feet on the rest of the throws, but these still all crushed my comp throws lately. Again, got some great coaching from Sean Betz on my hammer issues, and they magically jump 10 feet.

Stone- need to push up and out, not just out, and get more separation between the hips and shoulders

Weights- my orbits were too high/low, I looked at my feet too much, and I'm slow.

Hammers- orbits were too flat, not opening on my release, and I'm slow

Sheaf- blocking too low, standing up too straight, and trying to throw hard as opposed to just increasing the length of my cast.

WOB- Need to bend down lower before my pull and actually use those leg thingys.

So overall- need to work on moving implements faster, and getting hips/legs more involved.

Celtober:

I've been looking forward to this game and weekend for awhile. It's been a long season, and couldn't think of a better way to cap it off. Big thanks to Beech and the TCAA group for putting on a great game and always taking care of the athletes.

Friday- got into town and met up with Dunc so he could coach me up and give me some perspective. It was a great 3 hours. The coaching was great, the convo with awesome.

Saturday- went to the throws clinic with Spencer Tyler. Good decision #2 of the weekend. Anytime you get the chance to pick a Pro's brain, you gotta take it. Learned a ton, and got to meet another great guy in the Games.

Sunday- Comp Day
B stone- 27. Horrible. Worst braemar stone of the year.
O stone- 36. Not where I want it, but still really new with the spin, and starting to feel a little separation, so can't complain
HWD- 27. Second throw felt close to a big one, just a little blocked. Got amped for the 3rd one and then completely forgot how to throw it.
LWD- 57. Improved on my score. Not a PR, but not far off.
HH- 74. Another improvement on my score as a A.
LH- 92. Better than I've been throwing the past few games
Caber- 60 deg. Picks feel solid, actually starting to move with the stick, just still working on timing of the pull
Sheaf- tied PR at 26. Then jumped to 29, that wasn't in the cards. But by far the best sheaf session I've had in months.
WOB- 11. Tank was empty

This was by far the most stacked group I've ever thrown with, and I loved it. I learned so much this weekend I had to write it all down to make sure I don't forget anything. Best part of the weekend though, was accomplishing my final goal for the season. Before the season, I came up with 3 goals. 1) Win a B Game. 2) Win my way to the A's. 3) Finish the season in the top 100. Have been ranked 103 for my last 3 games, and couldn't move up. One last chance to hit the goal. Improved on 3 events, including a 2 foot improvement on sheaf. Now ranked 93. Had a great weekend, hung out with a great group of guys, learned a ton, and proved to myself that I can step up and throw big when I need it. Couldn't ask for a better spring board going into offseason. Going to take a week off to recover, spend time with the wife, and enjoy the accomplishments of the year. After that week it all gets put on the shelf and its time to get to work.....

Took some time off after Celtober, needed to let the body rest and heal up some nagging stuff. And the wife surprised me with a trip to Vegas for my birthday, so had to recover from that a little as well.

Starting a new program today, first couple of weeks are going to be submaximal and just focused on technique and increasing speed on the bar.

Squat:
5 x 5 w/ 135. 1 count pause and explode up

Hang Snatch:
4 x 10 w/ the bar. Working on exploding up and sitting into the squat

High Pulls:
4 x 10 w/ 95. Fire hips and pull high (to the forehead)

Abs:
3 x 10

Nice and easy. Got a little sweaty, good first day back.

Squat:
5 x 5 w/ 225

Deads:
5 x 5 w/ 225

Hang Clean:
5 x 2 with 185

Starting to ramp the weight up now. Still the focus is technique and moving everything explosively. Woke up last week and realized I was a lot more sore than I had any reason to be. Guess thats the difference between moving even small weight slow vs fast. I kinda like where this is heading...

Took Wednesday off per the schedule, and planned to do a 5K Thursday morning per the Huddleston Family tradition of doing a Turkey Trot every Thanksgiving morning. Race started at 8:15, figured I would do a nice jog/walk to burn to calories and get the heart rate up for the gorging that was to occur later. I'm really getting this fried turkey thing down btw. Then everything blows up in my face as I get an emergency call at 8:13 for a new patient. Still got 2 miles in before I had to get to the pharmacy to get the work done.

Friday Morning:
Squat
5x5 -225

Deadlift
5x5 -275

HighPull
5x5 - 135lb

Squat- felt really good. Movement was easy and actually in the neighborhood of proper depth. Best they have felt in a long time.

Deads- felt good and explosive. Crazy all the form issues I never knew I had. Great to train with someone who knows what they are doing. I thought you just go pick the thing up, apparently I was doing it all wrong.

Highpulls- Easy

When I got the training plan from the coach, I wasn't real excited about how long we were doing stupid light weight. I was all about the philosophy of moving weight fast and being explosive, but felt stupid not even sweating from a workout due to weight being sooooo light. Now I think he may have a convert. The body is responding well, and the bar speed is so much better. Starting to get pretty excited about the potential return on this. Was told that we will be ramping up weight moving into next week, so time to grab the lunch box and go to work.

Saturday: went to a new gym in Norman OK. Worked on Snatch and Clean. Did around 10 sets of singles on each. Then went out and got a few throws in. Stuck mainly with B stone, but worked thru the techniques of all the throws.

Gym this morning:
Squat
5x5 at 275

Dead
5x5 at 225

OHP
3x10 95, 105, 135

GHR 4x10. This one was not any fun at all.

And the wife texted and wants to do crossfit later so will update that bundle of fun after is over.

Skill- some ab thing where you lay on the ground, grab a bar, and pull your knees to your face

Squat- 4 x 3. worked up to 425

WOD w/ a partner
3 rounds of:

Thanks Dunc, and yeah Jon, the rows are tough. I feel like a champ the first 250, then the wheels fall off. Would still pick the rower any day than running tho.

Explosive day at the gym today

Incline Bench
5x5 w/135

Seated log press
5x5

High Pulls to the forehead
3x7 w/135

Crucifix hold
4x10

Hammer curls
4x10

V handle push downs
4x10 w/the rack

Gym this morning:

Crucifix hold
3x10

Bench
5 x 5. First 4 sets at 135, last set at 185

Incline DB Bench
5x5. All sets with 70's

Overhead Press
5x5. All @135

Hammer Curls
3x10

Still working really light weight, but excited about how the progress is coming. Feeling good, mobile, and dropping body fat. Still kinda hard checking the ego and staying at such light weight, but just gotta trust the program and stay patient. That patience thing sucks.

Crossfit last night:

Inspired by the 12 rounds of Christmas
1 150m row
2 pullups
3 DB thrusters
4 burpees to box jumps
5 handstand pushups
6 situps
7 kettlebell swings
8 1 arm DB snatch
9 toes to bar
10 walking lunges
11 dips
12 deadlift @ 225

so you do 1, then 2,1 and then 3,2,1 then 4,3,2,1 and so on until you are done. Didn't look bad at first, then all the "hardcore" crossfitters kept talking about how much it sucked. Got started and first few rounds were cake, then around round 6 it started getting bad, around 10 the wheels fell off. Took me 58 minutes to finish.

Gym this morning
SSB 5x5
Deads 5x5
Cleans 5x2
Hammer curls 3x10
Chest supported rows 3x10

I was still super beat from last night, so kept everything stupid light. Still was a big struggle, was way out of breath and sweating a lot more than normal. But got in and finished up the week, will take the weekend to recover and get back to it next week.
