I've been curious why there aren't ladies logs here or updated to the point of seeing them but here goes. If this is a boys club only, I'm sure I'll be sent back to the kitchen shortly. Wink

I've competed in one Highland games last fall here in Waukesha (I'm in Milwaukee) and two Highlander Games down in Texas. My first Highlander introduced me to the amazing Brittney Boswell. I could go on and on about her but you all know how wonderful she is and how she represents these games. She's tops. I've never kept a public training log but since I've committed to this season, I'm interested in feedback on how to tweak in season training.

The last three months of training has been busy. I follow 531 on my press, squat, and deadlift. I am still on linear progression with my bench and cg bench. I snatch and clean and jerk 1-2x per week. I hit a globo 2x per week for arm accessory work and cardio (until the snow goes away and I can hit the prowler again.) I'm tweaking this week to back off on intensity and up lighter volume, throw a bit, and hit the oly lifts more. Next week I'll be out of town and will train as I can.

Yesterday was my first outing with some throws. I sped read Matt Vincent's THROWING-LAB and applied as much as I could. The stone set-ups felt much better. My light WFD was fine, just getting the feel of things here; and my only goal in the heavy was to not let it throw me and I felt good about that. All throws went into the snow which my 12 year old shagged for me, I owe him bacon for that.

I'll celebrate turning 46 at the Shamrock games and am hoping for a fun and healthy season. Thanks!

Press: 1x5@ 35kg, 37kg, 40+ (10) *my PR is 58kg on this
Bench: 3x3@63kg
Power Snatch: On the minute, 40kg. Light, light but wanted to get back to working on quickness in the second pull. *my PR on this is 60kg
Power Clean/Jerk: On the minute, 50kg. Again very light but wanted to work on speed in 2nd pull. *my PR on this is 75kg.

19 degrees and windy but today was my only day to throw.

Good news: after reading some tips from 'Throwing Lab' my stone throw was further than my WFD.

Bad news: my stone throws were further than my WFD's.

Didn't keep total track but threw aboot:
10-12 stones
10 LWFD
3 HWFD
2 WOB

No bueno. We'll see what happens Saturday.

2013 Shamrock Games

Sheaf: 1st timer, had lots of advice and help. Thanks to Cabertosser for the fork borrow and the solid coaching and introducing me to an excellent coach. Excited to work on this in the future. Cleared 11'.

Caber: almost picked. Again, excited to just work on this

Braemar: 24'4" PR, good enough for first. Thanks to Matt Vincent's Throwing Lab for a few key cues.

Open: 26'4" PR, looking forward to improving.

Heavy Hammer: 47'9" on 3rd throw where I just tossed after the second turn. Much better. Don't like three turns.

HWFD: 26'11" PR big time. Very happy with this. Good jumping off point. Again, Throwing Lab kudo's for thinking "shoulders" and not "arms."

LWFD: 43'7" PR. Lots of room for improvement here.

WOB: Cleared 13' on first try. 14' not today. So happy I got the 12' monkey off my back and had solid 13.

All in all a much better day than expected. Special thanks to all competitors who were so helpful; Cabertosser and Jason Clevenger for coaching; my kid and partner for support; and the entire Shamrock games crew for putting on a great show. OH! Won very cool sword for 3rd place. Yeah.

Aloha.

Breaking down the mechanics of the throws and getting to a more efficient and powerful throw iz goood. Very excited to practice.

The Southside crew is awesome. The first time I was there, Garth (one of the owners AND a pastor) was conducting a pre-marital counseling session in the lobby. It was very cool.

4/13 Rockford Backyard Games

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly...without the awesomeness of Clint.

The Good
Braemar (13#): 22'+ some
I'll take this in the cold. It was off my PR but I feel I did my best for today.

Open (8.something): 25.3
Again, ok. Off my PR but within range to keep working the throw.

The Bad
HWD: 14'
Yup. I scratched my first two throws and barely held on for this one. Completely off my game. Completely.

LWD: 38.4'
Yup. Again, could not find my rhythm. Felt like I had four feet and they were all over the place. It was very bizarre. Then I looked at the pictures my awesome guy took. Even though I started low, I was as high as a Canadian teenager mid-throw. Crap.

Back to the drawing board.

The Ugly
HH: 42.9
Again, no rhythm. Uck.

LH: 56.10
13' off my best. By this time I was at a loss on how to get on track.

The Recovery

WOB: 12'
Missed 13 twice and then ran to Arby's for a potty break. (Ya, I read TMI on your guys' log all the time;)

I'll take this. My goal for this learning season is to get a minimum for each throw. After some consistency, raise the minimum. For WOB, 12' is my minimum meaning no matter how crappy a day I'm having, I'll hit 12.

Smiles
Sheaf: 18'
I had a very good miss at 20' and I'm extremely pleased aboot this event. I struggled at the Shamrock games and thanks to Jason and a few others, I was able to get down some key points and hit some good toss'. I brought home my own fork and sheaf and am excited to practice.

Overall: exactly where I should be. Glimpses of promise, some struggles, and a better understanding of the events.

Next up: Minnesota, Farmington. Home turf. Tongue

p.s. Thanks to Brian Hare for the mid-comp pep talk. Much appreciated.

Beautiful, sunny day!

HWD:
About 12 throws. Worked on feet staying down and staying low. Average throws around 20'. I'll take it after Saturday.

About 15 throws, same as above. Finding a rhythm. All in 40's and one non repeatable at 49. Huh.

Throwing Day

Stone/Open stone: good stone day. After working 'Braemar' stand and throw, tried the slide a bunch of times for open. It felt better than I thought it would and got 4-5 extra '.

Distance throws: had some decent light weight throws but something still going wrong with my feet on a consistent basis so that needs to be figured out. The heavy weight throws were all wonky. Practice again on Saturday.

All in all a fine day with sunshine and no rain or snow. Rare in these parts.

**Side note

After watching HWD throws last night I believe I've figured out where I'm going wrong. I'm trying so hard to get my feet to the correct position that I'm moving them before the weight. So the weight is probably at 4 o'clock when my right foot is coming off the ground. Landing me on my arse when the weight finally gets to where it should be, I'm already on my second turn trying to salvage the throw.

If that makes sense?

Looking forward to working it out on Saturday.

I had (have) the same trouble with both WFD.  I have to constantly remind myself to slooooowww down and wait on the weight before I switch my feet.  The Gene Flynn video that I linked in my training log convinced me that I really can move my body faster than the weight.  Once I believed that, I did better.  Good luck.

Throwing

Stone throws:
Still working on slide of open stone, feeling good. Starting to find comfort overall with throwing the stone.

HWD:
Worked on one turn and feels much better. After I found my rhythm was throwing in the mid 20's consistently, I'll take it.

LWD:
First throws were tough. Realized that in my efforts to "stay low" I was hunching up and that was pulling me off. I went back to fully stretching out my arms and throws were all in mid to high 40s. My feet are still wonky but some of this is starting to feel better. I'll take it. Even "poor" throws were still in low 40's. Just raising the minimum here.

Overall, better days are better than sucky days. I'll take it.

Throwing:
Stone throws-gave more attention to what is happening before the throw rather than trying to micromanage the actual push. Felt better. Practice, practice, practice.

WOB:
I don't practice this much but thought I should give it a whirl. Felt good. I don't have a measure system so it went pretty far over my head. But I'm short.

Distance:
Worked light weight, slow first turn, faster and more powerful second. I have to wear gloves due to a torn callous and I'm glad I got to practice with it. The release is a bit wonky but I felt better towards the end.  Still struggling for consistency in the heavy, one turn only. It'll come.

I'm very excited to compete Saturday in Minnesota with some amazing women athletes. I expect to learn a lot and have a blast.

Had the opportunity to throw with Katie Steingraber and Sara Hilger. I feel like I just attended a throwing training camp! I appreciate all of their help and advice and coaching tips. Watching them break down the throws was very cool and I learned so much. The three of us (pretty much locked 3rd place in when I arrived;) threw with the Masters dudes which meant that I also had Jason Clevenger who has such a solid grasp on how to communicate cues to novices that I really was quite spoiled. Thanks so much to the three of you for your help, it is so appreciated. I hope to see Katie and Sara here in the Milwaukee area for a games this summer and will see Jason in a couple of weeks back in Springfield.

Sheaf:
16' (Excited to keep working on this. I really like this event and got some expert coaching from Jason and watched great toss' by the ladies.) OH! I like Jason's comment when he and Katie just cleared 26 and was wondering if they should go up a foot or two. "I'd rather go out at 28 than 27." I lol'd.

WOB:
12' (Missed 13 twice hitting the bar as it was going up so I need to remember to step forward a bit. The third throw wasn't even close.) Also got to see Sara PR her WOB at 15' 8" (I believe) which was a lot of fun.

Caber:
I picked it. Twice! Didn't have a clue what to do with it after but again, got some great coaching and had a blast. A drill Jason gave me for picking is on the docket for this week.

*My throwing numbers are going off memory (and I'm elderly so it's not a great one at that) so I'll adjust if need be when the actual results come out.

Open Stone:
24' something. Not great.
Watched in awe at the clinic that Sara and Katie put on. Got some good video and great drills to work on that will help.

Heavy Hammer:
46' something.
Again, not great but I realized I was going off the first rotation so my last throw (two swings) at least had a chance. Again, got some great advice (and yes Jason, NOW I remember the release part we discussed in Rockford. Sh*t sinks in eventually:)

HWD:
20'
Still struggling with this on the field. Again, got some great advice from Sara and watched her follow her own advice. Practice, practice.

LWD:
49' and change. Competition PR.
Again, some tips from Sara were huge and I'm excited to keep practicing.

Overall, it was a day of learning from some of the best and I'm better for it. What an opportunity! Just awesome.

Thanks again to Jeff Bryan for the day!

Throws

LWD: Threw anywhere from 20-30 of these. Worked on timing, pushing the weight, and using my legs more. Wore my glove so some of the releases were wonky but overall a very good session. Was very helpful going into my...

HWD: I was sticking my timing of the two turn better than I have for a while. Used my legs more and had some very nice throws. Threw about 10-12 of these.

*threw about 5 more LWD after the heavy to lock in the timing. It was a good day.

Note: I know I saw somewhere on the forum about only using heavy weights to throw to nail down technique. I disagree. I don't work on fundamentals of the Snatch with near max weight, I use lighter weight and when the lift starts going bad, I drop it back down and work on it. The heavy weight pulls me all over the place and with no idea of what's happening, how do I fix it? Nailing in the timing and mechanics with the lighter weights allows me to apply them to the heavier.

Sheaf: I got some help from Jason last weekend on this and worked on the drill he sent me home with. It was lots of fun. I really like this event.

I left my stone in Minnesota so tomorrow's rest day activity will be roaming along the river and looking for another one.

Throwing Day

Threw with a friend who is doing his first Highland Games (heavy athletics, he's been here tons with the pipes) on June 1st. He did really good (was a thrower in HS) and my HH went much better after watching him.

Stones: just worked on using my legs more and the spin with the open stone. Felt good.
Distance: worked on timing and using my legs more. Did aight.
HH: Got the hang of it at the end, looking forward to this event this weekend.
Sheaf: Push and pop. Felt good.

A good day. Tomorrow a much needed rest day.

Well in all honesty, it's possible that's exactly what I look like. Heh. I actually got some quick teaching from Sara Hilgers in Minnesota and took videos of her throws. She's a great coach. I don't hit the right position every time, but it's coming.

Thanks for the comp luck, it should be a great time.

Springfield Area highland Games

Caber-turned my first Caber. It was an absolute blast. 1 o'clock. PR
Braemar: 16# Heaviest thrown to date. 21' and change.
Open: 28'7" PR
HHammer: 47'1
LHammer: 63' and change
*need to figure out this hammer thing

LWD: 49'8" PR
HWD:24' and change. Not a PR but distance events feeling much better. Keeping weight where it should be and excited to practice.

WOB: this was awesome. After hitting a PR of 13' in march, I've missed it at two other games. Hit it fine today; went for 13'6" and hit it and then went for 14'. Missed twice and hit it on 3rd. I was pretty excited...to say the least.
2nd overall. Great day.

Took an extra rest day yesterday. The halting deadlifts last Thursday before the games was stupid. I know better. My back was completely fried going into throwing all day. Add the farmers carry at the end of the day and I risked hurting my back rather than just dealing with fatigue. Lesson learned. Ended up painting and mowing lawn anyway so not much of a rest. Train light today, throw tomorrow, and just a little heavier Thursday.

Throwing Day

WOB: Worked with my friend Clay who is throwing in his first games next week. He did great. Also worked with the BF to tweak his form for his next event in Holland in 4 weeks. They've started throwing WOB in many Championship League comps and he'll be up against Misha Koklyaev who excels at this event (among other events:) He did good!

Stones: Open felt okay in the spin and very good in the glide (had one throw around 35'.) My hope next week is to PR using the glide and then switch over to the spin. We'll see;) Braemar felt gawdawful heavy. Meh.

Distance: felt off. PracticePracticePractice.

Sheaf: Feeling much better. I don't think this is an event next weekend, at least it's not posted but will bring my stuff just in case. I love my new fork. Thanks Jason!!

Hammer: Light hammer throws, still feels like dooDoo. Need some coaching.

Milwaukee Highland Games

After starting the season in cold, snow, and sleet you really appreciate weather days like yesterday. Partly/mostly cloudy with a cool breeze and dry, perfect! We had a nice crowd in 'tosa and it was a huge perk to live a mile away from the site. Katie and Luke made it down and I benefited from that. Each of them has an excellent coaching eye and are able to give one cue that has the biggest impact to a throw and were helpful all day. Thanks for that. Newly crowned WOB Masters world Champ Rick was (as always) a huge help also through out the day. Thanks to all!

Braemar (12#): 23' 23/4" Not my best. Keep working.
Open (8.something#): 27'8" Not my worst. Keep working.
HWD: 29'3 1/4" PR Very happy with this. Keep working.
LWD: 49 and change Wanted 50 and change. You can't always get what you want.

*Hammer notes. Last year in Waukesha at the games (my first) I hit 49'8 and 68'9 in HH and LH. I've believed this year in all my games that I will never repeat these numbers and have been very frustrated. WELL, it turns out that in Wisconsin we throw the 12# and 8# and the rest of the world we throw the 16 and 12. So THAT's why my numbers were better. Phew. Still needs lots of work but at least now I know to compare apples to apples and not Wisc to the rest.

HH (12#): 61' and change
LH (8#): 83' and change

Caber: turned the small ladies qualifier and picked the larger log. I love this event, it's a blast.

WOB: 13'

Will deload this week.

Thanks so much Luke! Your and Katie's coaching helped tons, I really appreciate it! It was a treat getting to watch you throw this time and I even learned while you gave Katie some good cues for her throws and then watching her follow your cue.

Matt and I were trying to figure out what other sports are out there where a rank novice can share the field with top athletes of their game. Highland Games are awesome.

Looking forward to the next time!

I'm taking a deload week and will tweak my programming for the next 7 weeks to include one gym day for machine accessory work, hill runs, throwing at least twice a week and an olympic lift day along with my strength work. I haven't figured it out yet but will look at it this week. I don't need to worry about recovery from hill runs or accessory day so as long as I'm smart about it all, I should be ok.

This puts me a week out from Enumclaw where I can deload again and focus on throwing. I'm really hoping to find some practice sessions COUGH*Jason C*COUGH or one more Games before the end of July but schedules are tight and this may be it.

Throwing day

Stones:
Worked a lot on just keeping stone tight against me thru all throws, glide or spin. Had some good tosses and transferred nicely to the heavier stone. Good day.

LWD:
Really need to fix my release. My throws are good but I'm releasing way too high so cutting off distance. Not very successful today. Back was getting fatigued so I shut it down. Back to the YouTube for that.

Gorgeous partly cloudy, high 60s day is a good day throwing. I'll take it.

Throwing day.

Open stone: lots of throws using glide. Went very, very well after I slowed the F down. Throws in mid to high 30's which is what shooting for in Saline.

LWD: blech. Something going seriously wrong. Will try to video if I can find someone to throw with. Need help. Srsly.

Light hammer: lots of throws. Felt very good when I incorporate some great cues I got from Luke and Katie a few weeks back. Many throws in high 60s and low 70s which is improved. I'll take it. I may get the hang of this hammer thing after all.

Throwing Day

Braemar and Open Stone. Both felt very good today. Got good pushes in the trig. Most open stone throws were in mid to high 30's. If I can do that in Saline MI in a few weeks, I'll be very happy. Braemar was ok, felt good and all throws in mid 20's. Would really like to push that up towards 30'. But overall, good day.

Light Hammer. This is also feeling better, had a couple throws with lots of speed. The one thing I need to know how to fix is that just as I'm about to throw, I pull my arms in instead of keeping them long and straight. I have no idea why I do this. But I need to not to.

Good day.

Are you holding your breath?  Duncan pointed out to me that I was and that it was causing my whole upper body to tighten up.  By the time I got to my release I had started pulling in my arms.

Throwing Day

HWD: Just practiced timing. Tried a few overhead swings but didn't feel like I gained anything from it. Not a horrible day.

LWD: Getting better at the overhead wind up and release. Throws in mid 50's finally so will keep practicing this one. Hope to get in mid-high 50's in Saline and push through 60's in Enumclaw.

LH: Had absolutely nothing left in the tank for this. Threw a couple warm ups and got dizzy with each one so shut it down.

Sunny, warm summer day. Nice.

Deadlift:
Up to 8x3@60

Press:
Up to 3x5@40

Erectors are not good.

Throwing Day:

Braemar Stone: Throws felt good but stuck on the 24'+ distance. Hmmmmm.

Open Stone: These are coming along very nicely and had some throws in the high 30's. I'd take that in Saline.

Light Hammer: these jack up my back. I had a few good throws but had to stop. Erectors are so jacked right now it's tough to take big breaths. I get my back mashed on again Tuesday evening. Would clean toilets in exchange for muscle relaxers. Truth.

First day attempting any semblance of training since my back seized up on Sunday. It's been a long week.

RDL: 3x8@27 kg

Squat: 3x5@40kg

Deadlift: 1x5@50 kg

Will see how that feels. Will need to evaluate throwing the hammer in Saline next weekend since that's the activity that seized up my back. But I need practice before Enumclaw. Awesome.

Whell, the training last week didn't make my back better. Or worse.

Squat: up to 3x5@ 40Kg, wearing my belt. Humbling but good.

Press: up to 3x5@35. No lay back right now.

Deadlift: up to 4x3@65

Curls: 3x8@20

I'd like to throw before this weekend's Saline games, we'll see.

Back felt better yesterday after training. It's still worse first thing in the morning, but I'm getting there. Pushed it today with CG bench and very light power cleans to see how the jarring would feel. Didn't feel good, but didn't feel worse. I'll take it. We'll see how I recover from that and hopefully go throw a little bit tomorrow.

CG Bench:
Up to 5x3@55kg

Power Clean:
5x3@35

Throwing Day

Warmed up with some light stone standing putt, felt pretty decent.

LWD: Struggled to find my groove. Warmed up and did better with overhead spins. Had a few mid-50's. Hoping to do that in competition.

HWD: Tried a few times and just didn't find my groove. Decided not to push it further today. Back is in acceptable tired range, hope to keep it that way.

Icing now. Hope to Snatch and throw just a little bit more tomorrow.

**Events for Saline do not include Hammer throw. This made my day.

I have not been this sore from throwing before, ever. Staying out of the gym for a week is no bueno. I'll do some light snatches to keep blood flowing today and go toss the sheaf around.

I've pulled out of the Saline games this weekend. As much as I'd like to go ahead and push through, my eye is on Enumclaw and I want to be able to give 100% there with no excuses.

Getting old is harsh.

Tried some Snatches. It was ugly. Did a bunch at 50kg and called it a day. Head wasn't in it.

Throwing Day

Braemar: Coming along nicely. Starting to feel the push of keeping the stone close until the release and using my legs more.

Open: Same. Good stone day. Had some decent throws.

LWD: Ugly. Something has drastically fallen apart on this throw.

On Tuesday, I have a throwing session with Sara Hilgers. Timely.

Throwing Day

As mentioned earlier, I took a little road trip and spent a few hours with Sara Hilgers throwing. We threw stones (shot mostly) a lot; distance throws; and worked a bit on the hammer before I had to head out.

First off, thanks again to Sara for taking a day off and sharing it, and her knowledge with me. She's an excellent coach who sent me home with some great drills; warm ups; key cues for myself during throws; and a fix on my hammer which has me really excited to practice. Her fixes on the hammer also ensures I'm not going to pull my back out of commission for another week again. I can not say thank you enough. I'm so stoked. And sore! But in a very good way.

Great day!
