8/2 front squat and more wob

135x8, 225x5, 225x5, 275x5, 300x1 with lots of pretty sparkles, 300x10 with an accidental pause on rep 10.

Wob pulls x6

Only one make, but 3 others that probably would have gotten the roll on a standard setup.

There is such a thing as too much WOB. It can be dangerous!

Duncan McCallum put the habit in me to pair a height event with whatever else I was throwing every practice.  On caber, HWFD or heavy hammer days, I'd also throw WOB.  On stone, LWFD, or light hammer days, I'd throw sheaf.

His reasoning for the frequency was that height events are weighted heavily in points, so even moving up one more height threshold at a game can make a big difference.  That gave me a plan at least, so I could regulate how much I was taking it in the teeth on WOB.  Of course, the protocol he gave me for WOB training was fairly high volume anyway for a little guy like me.

Since building my wobbly upright, I've pretty much been throwing wob every day and it has definitely helped, but sometimes I'm pooped, and I just throw wob because it's there. My worry is that fatigue can breed bad habits. Lately, I've dropped it down to about 6 throws per session. A couple warm ups, a few throws until I feel like I'm hitting "my throw", then a couple to reinforce.

8/6 (75309) ohp/deads/wob of course

Ohp w/ mini red bands

45x8, 95x5, 115x3

No bands

135x3, 150x8, 150x3, 150x3, 150x3, 150x3, 150x3

Deads

135x5, 225x5, 315x3, 365x3, 405x3

Wob pulls x6

It took me 4 throws to remember how to do it. Last 2 were good.

Yeah, that does sound like too much WOBbery.  Your reasoning for scaling back is solid, especially about bad habits.

I've got enough bad habits when it comes to throwing. I don't need to manufacture any more.

8/10 bench

Paused

135x5, 135x5, 185x3, 205x2, 225x2, 225x2

No pause

225x2, 225x2

Just trying to be fast...trying.

Okay, Mr. Pro Guy.

8/11 throws

Lots of sheaf. Good things happening there

Some wob. Starting to come around

Heavy hammer x4 best of 80'. Still weird

56 wfd x2 best of 28'. It's heavy

28 wfd x4 best of 63'. Haven't thrown this in a month so that was fine and I didn't tear my hand up.

8/14 La Crosse Irishfest Highland Games

Heavy hammer- 76' yuck. 3rd

Light hammer- 102' meh 2nd

Braemar- 34' cool. 2nd

Open stone- 42' meh tied for 2nd

Heavyweight- 44'11" PR YAY. Went 1/3 on this event, but the one I got was a good one. The ground was hard and the box had a wee bit of a downhill slope. That usually is good for me, but I didn't adjust as well as I should have. Lucky for me, it only takes one throw, but the fouls are concerning.

Caber 10:30 middle of the pack somewheres. I was able to find a way to make this event less hurty on my biceps. Basically, I cupped my right hand deep underneath and just kind of had my left there for stability.   It was less hurry, but also much less powerful.

Lunch- peanut butter and pickle sammmich. It sounds weird, but it's delicious. Has to be dill pickles and ideally homemade using my grandma's recipe. These were a staple in our family growing up.

Lightweight- 62' 2nd. 1/3 on this as well. Not ideal.

Sheaf- 26'6" poop 3rd? Had one good pull at 29'6" that didn't get the roll.

Wob- 15'6" meh 2nd or 3rd. I had three really good pulls at 16'6" but again no roll for me. I think I need to throw it higher.

Overall 2nd. We threw in a big combined group. Men, women, masters, masters women, lightweight. Everybody throws their own implements and
scores are tallied all together. Katie edged me out for the win. She was also judging and measuring the whole day which is very convenient if you ask me. Overall, I didn't throw too badly and it was AWESOME to have the games and fest back this year. Everyone was missing Jane and Jason Clevenger, but Dr. Big Katie stepped up and did a great job as AD. It felt good to be back on the field with a few of the guys I hadn't seen in a couple years. The banter was top notch. I missed it. It felt good to catch up. 10/10 would throw here again.

Looks like a solid all around showing from the Crowley clan. Glad you gave Dr. Big Katie a run for her money. Must be weird to do LWFD like hours after you did HWFD. Not a fan of that but schedules be crazy sometimes.

Nice work.

Thanks, buddy. Yeah it was a bit weird, but the feat wants caber to go on at 4pm, so we just worked around that. Honestly, as much as I generally hate breaks, I think this one was a lifesaver. I don't usually eat during competition, but I felt a million times better after that PB and pickle.

8/16 bench

135x5, 135x5, 155x5, 170x5, 190x3, 225x1, 245x1, 215x8

Paused close grip

215x3, 215x3, 215x3, 215x3, 215x3

8/17 squat and wob

Front squat

135x5, 225x5, 255x3, 285x3, 325x1, 325x3, 325x1

Not a great squatting day. My hip has been bugging me. Feels like a constant charlie horse, but it's deep and I can't seem to get at it with a La Crosse ball or thunder gun.

Wob

This went surprisingly well. I took six pulls and cleared 16'8" on all of them. I was happy with all of the pulls. The last 3 especially. I was coaching my wife on how to throw wob and told her to sit on the weight when it's behind her. She watched me throw and said "you're not sitting on it very hard." Frickin' jerk. Turns out, she was right. The last three throws were bang zoom to the moon.

Got a little behind on logging the last while. I've been doing a lot of resting and not a lot of anything else. The hip is feeling better though. Not 100% but noticeably better.

Things I did recently:

Bench

135x8, 135x5, 160x5, 175x5, 195x13

Paused close grip

195x8,6,6

Paused incline

185x6x6

Things I did today:

Went to a local landscaping place and picked out some new stones. I grabbed three 22s stones, a 16.6, and 17.2. Also, a 12 and 8 for the wife. I tried to get varying shapes and similar to the stones I see around the Midwest games.

I took throws with all of them. All the Braemars were 31'-33' and pretty comfy. The open stones I picked are going to take a bit of getting used to. I purposely picked ugly ones to force myself to find a way to throw them. First practice with no throws over 40' but I chalk it up to the unfamiliar new stones and being tired and weak. I've got a 16lbs shotput on the way too. I'm hoping it'll allow me to get more throwing volume in without tearing up my face.

Lwfd x4 best of 64'

8/26 squat

16" box squat

135x8, 225x8, 315x8, 315x8, 315x8

Still a little uncomfortable, but overall fine. I feel better afterwards than I did before, so that's probably good.

Never a bad thing. I need to do some of these training sessions where I only do the important thing and then leave.

So wise

For the first time in a long time, lifting is feeling like a chore. Even doing the bare minimum is a struggle. I have a tough time getting my ass out of bed early enough to lift before work. I switched things up today and lifted after work.

8/28

Warm up walk with the puppers

OHP

+mini red bands
45x8, 95x5, 115x5

No bands
125x5, 140x3, 160x5, 160x3, 160x3, 160x3

8/30 bench then throws

135x8, 135x5, 165x5, 195x5, 210x8

Paused close grip

210x5, 210x5, 210x5

Close grip felt better than regular

Hammers

Too many throws. All very very bad. There were a ton of mosquitos too. Insult to injury.

8/31

Rearranged the gym. Not technically a workout, but I got sweaty. I moved the squat rack to a less sexy but more level position. Where I had it set had about a 3/4" inch list from left to right. Not sure if that contributed to my hip hurty, but I can't imagine it helped. We'll see what happens. I still have some stuff to move around, but the squat rack is in place for now until I get around to leveling the floor or at least pouring a level platform.

9/2 morning squart

Front squat

135x8, 225x5, 275x5, 315x3, 340x3

Back squat

340x5, 340x3 and I got way forward and fell into the rack. I recovered and didn't hurt myself, but it was embarrassing. I took that as a sign and called it good.

9/8 squat

Front squat

235x5, 270x5, 310x5

I widened my grip a little to try to keep my upper back from rounding. It seemed to help with that, but I'm lacking mobility somewhere and the bar kept rolling forward on me. It made for a very wobbly and harder than it needed to be top set. The plan was to pause for dinner then resume. That didn't happen. I ate too much. When it comes to bacon wrapped venison medallions, it's hard for me not to eat all of them. I gave it the old dropped out of college try. Did a single at 310 and almost puked. Not worth it.

9/9 OHP

+red bands

45x8, 95x5, 115x5

No bands

130x5, 145x9, 145x5, 145x5, 145x5

It really didn't take much. Lifting motivation is at an all time low.

Did some things at some times last week. Nothing exciting. Threw some heavyweight, lightweight, shot, and wob. They all went okay, but sadly the year of my body rebelling against me continues.   I have shingles and boy does it suck. It's in my trigeminal nerve in my face. I've never felt pain like this before. Not cool. Hopefully, I feel less shitty by Saturday. I really don't want to have to miss my last games of the season.

9/22 throws

Felt good enough to do some stuff today. Pain is mostly gone. Just dealing with some slight vertigo. That made things a little interesting. Took things pretty easy

22lbs Braemar x3 30',30',32'

42lbs heavyweight x3 35', 37', 42' really eased into these. Being patient on my first cast was key.

Sheaf pulls x8 clearing the 28' spriggle. Took a minute to dial in the accuracy though.

Wob pulls x5. Felt okay. Made me dizzier than the other events surprisingly.

This was good for my brain. I'm glad to know I can throw without dying. I didn't want to push it too much. I seem to be on a good track with my recovery and would like to keep it that way.
