I knew a guy like that.  We referred to him as 'a cheese with legs'.  There's a visual for ya.

Tom

I thoroughly enjoy that.   I feel like I can picture that person perfectly...and smell them oddly enough.

9/22 Bench

5,3,1+,3,5+

230, 260, 285x3, 260(paused), 230x10

Bench felt not terrible today. I think 260 is the most I've ever done for paused reps and those felt especially good.

Paused incline barbell
3x3@185

9/24 squat

5,3,1+,3,5+

315, 355, 405x8, switch to high bar, 355, 325x8
There was more there on both the + sets, especially the high bar one, but they were comfortable, so I left it at that.

That's all. Hopefully, throw tomorrow. 10 days until nationals, woot.

9/25 throws

56 for distance
Fulls x4 best of 31'

28 for distance
Fulls x5 best of 64'

42 for distance
Fulls x6 best of 45'

Heavy hammer
3 winds x3 best of 87'

Light hammer
3 winds x3 best of 107'

Wob pulls x 12ish @17 foot branch. Had some really good pulls. Put a few on top of the branch.

20lb sheaf pulls x6. These felt great. Put a few over the 26' spriggles.

Finished with some 1.75k disc and frolf throws.

10/3 Lightweight Nationals

Holy crap was this a step up in competition. The day was a bit up and down for me, and in such a stacked class, that won't cut it.

Braemar- 31'. Gross. Couldn't get a good handle on the stone at all. It was odd shaped but everyone else seemed to handle it just fine.

Open stone- 43' not bad for me

Heavyweight- 43'11" PR but there was more there.

Lightweight- 66" PR and event win. Highlight of my day.

Heavy hammer- 81' tightened up on my third wind and screwed my finish.

Light hammer- 100' see heavy hammer.

WOB - 15'. Very disappointing.

Caber- 60° this was a 125lb beast of a caber. I need to practice this event.

Sheaf-27' disappointing again. 30 should have been easy but it got in my head.

Overall 4th. I'm not pissed, but I know I left some points on the field which you can't do at a games of this caliber.

10/5 OHP

Wasn't planning on doing much, but ended up hitting a PR. 135x5, 155x3, 175x3, 185x3, 210x1 PR woot.

Took some WOB pulls after @17' branch. Put a couple over. Son of bitch.

Was awesome to get to throw with you man you did an awesome job. I think you cleared 30 feet on sheaf on every throw until the bar was at 30 haha. Hope to see you out there again next year!

Well done, Crowley the Greater (not to be confused with Luke, Crowley the Lesser).

You fell prey to Jeff Syndrome. Meaning you used all your good hammer throws at practice. I know this syndrome well.

Great comp outta you regardless. Don't worry about Sheaf, it's not a real event anyway!

Thanks Pete! It was awesome to meet and throw with you. It's cool to see what the top end of our class is really capable of. Gives me something to aspire to. Honestly, stealing the win from you in lightweight for distance was the highlight of my highland games career, haha.

Thanks to you as well, Jeff. Is Jeff syndrome an STD? If so, I've probably got some pills that will clear that right up.

10/6 deads

Day 2 of off-season jackin' around-heavy singles addition

225x5, 315x3, 405x1, 455x1, 500x2, 550x1. That's my heaviest deadlift in probably over a decade and I think the only time I've pulled 500 for reps.

Chest supported DB rows
3x8@90s

Band face pulls x a lot

I don't hate sheaf per se. I hate that I can't make it go over the stupid bar. We should keep sheaf, but get rid of the bar.

10/7 bench

185x6, 205x5, 225x3, 275x1, 295x1, 295x1

Incline bench

185x5, 205x3, 225x1, 245x1, 265x0, 265x0, 265x1, 225x3, 225x5, 185x5 paused

Weird day. Still jackin around.

Throws

Heavyweight x a bunch best of 44'

Lightweight x a bunch best of 66'

With the season being over, I'm tweaking some things to try to take that next step. Luke gave me a new cue on my entry that I think will be beneficial when (if) I can put it all together.

Was the cue to not put your left foot on the ground between turns 1 and 2?

Only Luke is wild enough to do it!!

Maybe that's what I'm missing. I'm spending way too much time with my feet on the ground.

10/8 squat

135x8, 245x5, 355x3 these feel like crap. Switch to pauses.

Paused reps
355x1, 405x1, 425x1

Paused front squat
245x3, 275x1, 295x1, 335x1

All done beltless

I'm paying the price for the PRs I hit earlier in the week.

Andy, you can only accelerate the weights when your feet are on the ground so it must be something else.  As for the sheaf, I’m with Tom.  It was my bread and butter event, I could always make gas money.  Not sure how the pros get paid now but in my day we got paid per event.

Haha, yeah. It's kind of running joke with (or about) Luke. He never seems to have his feet on the ground. I hope someday there will be a lightweight pro class. For now, I'm happy to pay for the chance to throw. A cool t-shirt is a pretty sweet participation prize though.

Further hijacking Andy's TLOG because we are the unsupervised and sweaty few --

The only time I ever placed top three overall in a Masters' Division, I did it by taking second in sheaf.  Height events are worth a lot and compensate for my failings in WFD.

So yeah, sheaf.

Regular barbell strict press for comparison

185x2x2

They both suck

Yeah, it was fun but unsustainable. I'll get after it again next year. Back to boring old submaximal training today.

10/19 bench

5,5,5+,5,5+

205, 230, 260x6, 230 paused, 205x10 paused

Paused barbell incline

185x3x7

Hex press

30s x3x12
My upper back kept getting all crampy on these. 'Twas annoying and made them much less effective.

That sounds terrible. Heavy enough to suck, but light enough to have to do way too many reps. I'll remember that when it's time to JA again.

10/20 squat

5,5,5+
280, 325, 370x10

Front squat
370x1, 325x5, 280x10

Back squat felt bad today, but front squat felt less bad. We'll call it a draw.

135,155,175x4 crap, rerack, wait 10 seconds, 1 more, 155x5, 135x10

Banded press
135 +red bands x2x1, 95 +red bands x3x3

Single arm lateral raises/band lateral raises
40x5/8,8/8

Today was bad, but at least it was warm in Luke's basement compared to my garage.

10/23 deads

5,5,5+,5,5
335, 405, 440x6, 405, 335 with pause of the floor and bellow the knee.

Having deads as my last workout of the week is going to take some getting used to. I was doing ohp, deads, bench, squat for the last couple years, but I decided to switch to bench, squat, ohp, deads just to see if it makes any difference. So far, I have no idea.
