If anyone reads this log and is interested in what some of my training looks like, I have a new "Summer madness" highlight video of some of my lifting and throwing over the summer as I get ready for Am-Worlds and ECC's. There is a touch of humor in it and some real 70's tunes. Enjoy the mediocre throwing technique and various training.

Wednesday Hammer/Sheaf
HH Walking wind 2x10 10 wind drill x2 3 wind and release into ground x5 3 wind throw x6 LH 3 wind throw x6 14lb hammer 3 wind throw x2 20lb sheaf Bottoms up x3 Full x3 16lb sheaf full x3 I noticed on the hammers that in trying to keep the hammer over my right side I was letting my arm prematurely bend on the left shortening my orbit. Once I fixed this it added around 5ft to my average throw. Hopefully this will put my hammer back on track. |

Thursday double session
Workout #1 Warm-up: GHRx20, 45 degree hyper x20, rev hyper x20, standing abs x20, mobility work Caber walk x50 yards Caber Sprint x1 10 step drill x1 Full turn x5 Workout #2 Warm-up: 1 leg squat 2x10, 1 leg kb deadlift x10, mobility stuff and BB snatch warm-up complex BB Snatch grip high pull from hang 135x5 185 3x1 205 3x1 225 3x1 Contrast set SSB high box squat w/bands Bar +strong band x5 Bar +strong and average band x3 (kept this tension) 135x2 225x2 315 5x2 supersetted w/34" box jump 5x3 Explosive WOB Good morning "Pulcinella GM's" Barx5 135x5 185 2x5 supersetted w/med ball twisting sit ups on GHR 2 rounds of superset of standing BB twist 145x10, rev hyper x20, about wheel x10 This week and the next are peaking weeks for my upcoming games. Circa max squat cycles have worked well for me in the past and I was intrigued with trying to incorporate some contrast training this time around. The band tension and weight combo on the high box squats was probably putting the weight somewhere between 600-700lbs at the top. I have never used a high box before but I know many throwers and coaches feel they are more sport specific. I supersetted the squats with box jumps and it felt great. I also contacted Steve Pulcinella to ask him about an explosive good morning that he used in the past for his WOB. He was kind enough to get back to me quickly with a vid and I used them today. Hopefully they will help me break the 17 foot barrier. |

I either hit or was very close to practice PRs with all hammers today. Sheaf felt good too.

Wednesday Throws
Light hammer winds 2x10 forwards/back 18lb shot Standing progression x8 Standing no reverse x5 16lb shot standing w/reverse x10 56lb weight Entry drill x5 2 turn throw x5 49lb weight 2 turn throw x5 28lb weight 2 turn throw x10 WOB x5 Not the most stellar day today overall. No real pop with the shot, the trig got torn up pretty quickly making my turns less smooth than I wanted and my hand was still bothering me a bit on the release so weights, particularly the 56 was not so great despite feeling pretty good on sunday. WOB was one thing that felt great, I cleared my branch at it's highest point every time with ease.

Thursday Marathon Session

I will be very curious to see if the contrast work, extra rotational midsection work and goodmorning variation makes a difference. Everything felt good today, the high box work moved quickly despite the heavy tension and weight combo and the jumps felt smooth. Caber also felt nice.

MN Ren Fest/Amateur Worlds Review
We had a good class of 11 competitors and nice weather. It started off cool and foggy but quickly warmed up as the sun came out. Field was a little muddy bit not terrible by any means. Here is how it went: Heavy Hammer: 87'11.5" Old gloves were giving me some dexterity issues and I was just tight on my winds, finally got long on my last one but tacked up too much and released late, really bad throws for me. 10th place Stone: 36'9.5" 11th place, terrible as always, nothing more to say really. Heavy Weight: 37'0.5" small PR here and the throws felt pretty good. 4th place and started to climb out of the hole. Light Weight: 76'3.5" Big PR! Opened a little over 72 and each throw went farther. I was in the lead in the third round when Skylar stole the lead from me on his final throw. 2nd place. Caber: No turn. There was no side judging for this one. I came close a few times to turning it but just couldnt get my hands right to really pull on it. I think 5 guys got turns. Frustrating because I turned it twice easily last year, I don't understand why I had issues. Back was jacked up after caber and I was having to stretch between every throw from this point on. 20lb Sheaf: 33' 5 foot PR! I hit 27 last year and had not thrown a 20 since then. I came in at 22 and cleared everything clean through 31. Forsyth and I then went for 32 and both got it on 2nd tries. I managed to get 33' with room to spare and really surprised myself. It was an ugly sheaf but honestly did not feel 20lbs, who knows but I won against several who had thrown the 20lb sheaf 30+ in the past so I was happy with it. WOB: 16' Came in at 13 and hit the cross bar on first try, just sloppy. Hit 14, 15 and 16 on 1st tries but no finesse. Blatnik and I were the only ones left going for 17, he did it easy on his first try, my attempts were probably the worst they have been while going for that height and I hit the bar just once. Took 2nd. Final result: Tied Shuttlesworth for 5th. I finished 12th last year I believe, so 3 PRs and a 1st place and 2 2nd place finishes were really nice. I had a blast with the other competitors and learned a lot. If I had been able to come through on Caber or Hammer then I could have placed better. Stone, well I just dont know what to do. Good times!

Monday Hammer and Sheaf
Heavy hammer Walking wind 2x10 10 wind drill x2 3 wind and release into ground x5 3 wind throw x5 Light Hammer 3 wind throw x5 16lb sheaf Bottoms up x5 Full x6 I really did not want to throw today and was hoping just to recover from the games and travel. Instead the weather report showed the weather was looking to be extremely rainy for the rest of the week, so I had to throw today. I kept the volume moderate and the throws didnt feel too awesome or coordinated on either event. My CNS is fried, plain and simple. I would like to get in at least another session this week where I can get some work with stone and weights, hopefully the weather will let me.

Great work Charles! Beau was giving me updates all day and we were shocked at the bombs you laid down. Once you figure out that damned stone you'll be a force!

Thanks for the compliments Jeff, it means a lot. I am working on getting some hands on coaching for the stone and if I can make that happen then hopefully I can start to throw some respectable distances there. It is just the one event where I know what to do but cannot make myself do it and need someone there. If I can fix that and throw the hammer and Caber with more consistency then I should be able to improve my placing a bunch.

Excellent work Chas, and mystical to see that we threw the exact same mark in the 28 on the exact same day in different regions of America.

East Coast Championships Review
I grew up in the DC area so it is always nice to come up for ECCs and stay with my Brother Beau and see family and friends. Beau threw in the Pro division on Saturday on a cold miserable day, I came down with a head cold right before coming to DC so for a guy who lives in south Florida, 50's and raining was miserable and I felt tight and pretty sick that evening. I woke up Sunday feeling much better overall, got in a good breakfast at cracker barrel and made my way to the field with Beau. Having scoped out my fellow competitors I knew by the strengths and weaknesses of the competitors was going to mean a tight games that would go to the end, here is how it went. Heavy Hammer: 89+ i think, tight and not getting long enough, 3rd place Braemar: 30 or 31sh, bad, 6th I think Open Stone: Doing my usual garbage standing throws and sitting at 6th, pulled a glide out of my ass on the last one and threw a small PR 38.10, still bad I know but bumped up to 5th. HWFD: 35+, no one was moving too well in the trig with the long grass and mud so no one threw stellar, 1st place 45 minute break which was nice since it was fast but they made us then do caber since the crowd was big Caber: 80, 12:00 and then the caber was broken, we pulled out a shorter, heavier and thicker stick with no taper and restarted the event which was fine by me. I turned it all 3 times with a 12:00 on the first one and pretty good marks on the other two. 1st place LWFD: 73+, had to enter really aggressive to make up for the slow trig, 1st, really started climbing out of my "stone hole" at this point. WOB: 16 for the win, went for 17 as usual and hit the bar but had the parabola wrong. Sitting pretty. Sheaf: 24', missed at 27. I felt horrible about this, the bag was sticking to my tines and I couldnt get it vertical, luckily all but one guy was throwing just as bad with the bag and I tied for 2nd. Final result: 1st place! Despite feeling sour about my dour sheaf at the end, I was super excited to win this games in front of my Brother, Father and friends. It came down to the last event as I thought it would and 1st through third was separated by only a few points. I had to dig my way out of a big hole and somehow pulled it off and had a few guys run enough interference on some other events so that the stars alligned and I pulled off a win. Overall solid group of competitors and very exciting competition from start to finish. I hope this means the ECCs are starting to make a comeback. Probably my last games for the year, my wife has been very supportive and tolerant of me leaving her at home with an infant and a 3 year old while I go out of state and compete. Time to give it a little rest, maybe not throw for a month and gradually get ready for January.

Thursday Lower
Warmup: Sled drags, 1 leg squat 2x10, mobility work and BB complex BB Split hip snatch 95x5, 135x3, 185x1 DE Box Squat w/cambered bar barx10 135x10 225x5 315 5x5 Called it here, was feeling really overheated and shitty. Probably the combination of being sick, travel, competing and then getting crushed wednesday night at work just all caught up to me. I was pale and lightheaded and needed fluids, cooler temperatures and carbs to feel ok again.
