Solid games Jeff. Anything specific that has been helping your hammer mojo as of late?

Thanks man!
The biggest thing was on the third wind, getting my arms as straight as I can as fast as I can on the right. This has allowed me to really drive the hammer down and then up and over my left shoulder. Felt amazing. It's funny because this is something many people know to do and I thought I was doing but since I've been conscious of it, I've been able to really hit bigger numbers. Now if only I can get it work on heavy hammer...

Throws in 1000% humidity Heavy Hammer x15 lots of winds trying to get the length back into my HH. Best of 102'. Piecing it all together. Light Hammer x3 best of 125' lol gloves were soaked and I was speed-less WOB x10 worked on a cue that I never do when under the bar because I like to suck. It appears to be working but I need to bring my height standard with me sometime to actually see.

Throwz 16# Ostone Stands x10 best of 44' Glides x14 best of 47'-48' poop everything felt slow HWFD x12 best of 42' most were worse, I was not getting my left down and pulling with left shoulder. LWFD x15 best of 78' see above Not a great session. A reminder that I need to be actively hitting positions and they wont magically hit themselves.

Moar throws Heavy Hammer x10 best of 102'-103' had 5 throws at 102' and the rest around 100' or so. Consistent but missing just one thing to get that extra 3-5 feet I want. Light Hammer x6 best of 129' much better. Hammers feel good, just gotta get the rest of me up to par!

Throwz HWFD x10 best of 44' everything felt good today. I was a bit all over the box, but the pop and timing was back! LWFD x6 best of 83'+ same here. Right down the middle. Heavy Hammer x12 best of 103' cant break 103'! had 6 in a row at 101-103' but cant find that pop for the extra feet. Super happy with today.

Moar Throws, weathers been so nice! Ostone 16# Stands x15 best of 45' Glides x15 best of 48' played with some mental cues to get my left to open up. Finally started working, but wasn't able to really get after any. Heavy Hammer x12 best of 103' NOT AGAIN! Cant be mad, 103' is my PR so I'm right there WOB x12 pulls fixed a few timing issues.

Helped Alison Tostevin out up at the Maine Games field organizing and cleaning up some cabers. Al Dargie and Nick McPhee were there too and fun times were had. No throwing done but got the itch when I got home. LWFD x15 best of 83' not bad but footwork was all over the place. Just gotta, tighten it up Heavy Hammer x12 best of 103' blast! 103' again. But again, this is a good throw for me so I cant be too unhappy.

Got out to throw again, inspired by the live feed of the 'Claw games on YouTube. Ostone 16# Stands x12 best of 46' Glides x12 best6 of 49' getting there. Realized I wasn't pushing all the way through my block so once I did that things started going further. Weird. HWFD x12 best of 42' this was ugly. Kept getting out of position on my entry and then couldn't fix it. Nothing to be alarmed about but it was annoying Light Hammer x10 best of 125'. Kept missing speed into the delivery. Poop.

Detroit Highland Games, Livonia, MI PROS: Chuck Kasson, Jeff Kaste, John Pilling, Dan McKim, Andy Vincent, Mike Zolkiewicz, Nate Parker, Nathan Burchett, Jeremy Gillingham, Sean Urquhart, Damien Fisher, Kevin Becker 18# OStone- 46'10 8th LWFD- 79'3 5th HH- 102'7 5th Caber- 70 10th WOB- 14' tied 11th *SIGH* Overall: Tied 10th Well if I am being honest I am pretty happy with how I threw this weekend with the exception of WOB. I competed well with the group and was sitting tied 6th going into WOB and for the first time in a long time, choked hard and failed to deliver. The stone was flying well but couldn't get a solid tuck so it was difficult to get anything behind it. Otherwise, I was happy with how that felt. LWFD was much the same. My form felt really good but I fouled 2 throws due to the left line. Not enough driving up the right side. Something to tweak. HH was very nice but I was disappointed I didn't manage a PR with how practices have been. It helped me get a couple extra points for Celtic so we'll see if that gets me in. Caber was a wobbly bastard, over 22 feet long and thin. I believe 6-7 of the guys missed a pick or lost it behind them on the first attempt due to underestimating the wiggle. I was told again that I was not pulling high enough and hence, no turns. One day i will realize how tall I am and do it properly. WOB. Disaster. Attempt at 14' was normal and high. Then the wheels came off. 2 pulls which were too early causing me to send it way under the bar. Final attempt was normal power/timing, but smashed the bar because I wasn't out far enough. Just could not deliver the performance I am capable of. Next time. Overall had a blast. Really love this games because 5 events make it a mental challenge as well as the usual physical one. If you mess up in ONE event, you're done. You live and learn and I want to thank Kurt and Deanna Pauli for having me out! I hope to be back next year to continue to improve. Fergus this weekend.

Throwz HWFD x12 best of 42' focus was just getting my body/feet in the positions I wanted, so wasn't trying to murder it. Pretty pleased with how the distances were despite the focus being elsewhere LWFD x6 best of 82'-83' only 1 throw under 80' which is encouraging Heavy Hammer x3 best of 102'+ Light Hammer x3 Best of 128'+ Solid day.

Wanted to fix height event stuff. Found a nice field with a few trees. Tree branches good for WOB only, still looking for a good sheafing tree. Did this in a field. Sheaf x10 changed up my wind-up a bit and I am dialed in. Not sure on height, feels/looks high but video replay shows such slowness! Either way, maybe...maybe....I'll get 30' at Fergus. WOB x10 @ 14'4 branch. Cleared 8 of 10. Left 2 in front. Fixed my timing and they were flying over. then went into the gym for some training Sled drag @ 90# added for 10 minutes Clean and Press 135x2, 135x2, 135x2, 155x2, 155x2, 155x2 Belt Squat 140# added, 3x8 Fatbell Curl and press 25sx10, 25sx10, 25sx10 Prowler Pushes

Fergus Highland Games, Fergus, Ontario, Canada PROS: Jason Baines, Owen Willems, Rob Young, Jeff Kaste, Chuck Kasson, John Pilling, Nate Parker, Nate Burchett, Matt Doherty, Lorne Colthart, Jeremy Gillingham 26# Open Fergus Stone- 36'3 22# Hammer- 99'4 16# Hammer- 126'6 Caber- Didnt turn HWFD- 41'4 LWFD- 79'3 WOB- 15' Sheaf (Bonus)- 27' Overall: 7th What a phenomenal games! The weather cooperated and the crowd was huge. The line up was very very deep as well. Really, it was the Lorne and Chuck show and everyone tried to keep up. They were super consistent and with Lorne moving to Canada next year, it's going to shake things up big time in North American heavies! I threw alright but again, the stackedness of the field was tough to keep up with. 36' with the Fergus stone was 3 feet better than last year but good for 3rd to last or so. Couldn't find the handle like everyone else. Hammers felt great but couldn't get a hold of a HH throw. I know I wasn't finishing them which probably cost me 3-4 feet. 4 more feet would have bumped me 5 places as well. Damn. Light Hammer was a lot better, but still need to be more consistently near 130'. Caber was crap. We had a qualifier that only 5 pros turned. It wasn't intimidating but if you didn't pull early she wouldn't go over.. I came close on my last attempt but alas, no dice. Broke for lunch and my Pie game was on point. Went for Cherry, Rhubarb-Custard, and Apple. Omg so good! Came back for weights. HWFD was good but fouling was prevalent. My first throw was easily 42'+ but a clear foul out the left side. I am just not actively pushing to the right and I need to change this. I did take 2nd in this event but had that first throw been legal, I may have tried for 1st. LWFD I opened with 79' for the 2nd week in a row but failed to improve on it. This needs to change. WOB was finally better. hit both heights on first tries which was huge. Shots at 16' were poor tho and I know my form was not on point. Sheaf was great. My new form that I have practiced for 1 day worked splendidly! My clearance at 23' was 7'+ over the bar but then at higher heights, I started to get sloppy. I think I can clear 30' at Maine. I just need to be confident! Overall it was a great time at Fergus and the guys throwing were all a lot of fun. Maine will be another battle to place well but hopefully I can come through on what I know I am capable of!

Nice job Jeff, that stone is a real pain in the butt (but pie makes it all worthwhile).

Oh I had both feet out of the box on the left. Couldn't Dave Barron my right foot in!
As for the pushing, If I dont actively push the weight out to the right and let the high point drift further left, it drags me out of the box. Pushing it right keeps me dead center. Sometimes I forget this and try to get after it thinking the box is 5'6 wide instead of 4'6 lol ....Unless you were being sarcastic. In either case, the pie was legit and the Fergus stone is the worst!

Maine Highland Games, Topsham, Maine PROS: Beau Fay, Nate Burchett, Jeremy Gillingham, Mike Zolkewicz, Jeff Kaste, Sean Urquhart, Rob Meulenberg, Sir David Barron, Esq., Matt Doherty 22# Braemar- 38'1 *Non-scored for overall* 16# Ostone- 47'5.5 HWFD- 42'2 LWFD- 77' Heavy Hammer- 104'5 PR Light Hammer- 126'11 *Non-scored for overall* Caber 18', 135#- 80 Sheaf- 27' WOB- 15' Overall: 2nd Maine games have traditionally been my kick off to the final stretch of games for the season and my first chance at all 9 events for next year. It was a great field and weather was awesome. I had a really consistent games but definitely left some big throws off the results due to fouling which is unfortunate. Stones were solid. Definitely missed a big push with the Ostone, probably had a 48'-49' in there with that stone and I wasn't able to put it together. Weights. Oh weights. They are my babies and I have been screwing them up left and right. HWFD opening throw was 43'8 but a pretty decent sized foul out the left. Was able to gather myself for a solid 42' but that would have given me first place points on that event. LWFD was even more frustrating. First throw was 77' then next 2 fouls. 2nd throw was easily 79'-80' and third throw we measured to 83'3 which would have given me first again but instead I settled for 4th. These points would have given me the overall win too, BOOOO. Drifting way too far on these events is something I have 2 weeks to really fix. Ugh Hammers were really awesome. Heavy Hammer was my best series ever. 104'5, 104'2, 103'6. Didn't even deliver the 3rd throw because it was moving faster than I was used to. I didn't know what to do with it! Excited with a PR here since it's easily been 3 years or so since I've hit a PR. I think there are a few more feet there. For LH we moved the trig so the landing are was a little uphill and I also wasn't as into the event since it was non-scoring. Still, pleased with 127' Was hoping for a bit closer to 130'. Caber we had a really long and light stick at first that everyone turned easily so we moved onto the shorter heavier stick. Almost no taper, made for a fun stick. I had one last really great pull that fifered so I was awarded with degrees only. Only 3 people turned it and I know I am capable of turns but no dice today. Sheaf was almost a disaster. Missed first 2 at 24' but was able to get it over on 3rd. Hitting 27' first attempt was huge in my overall finish. Had 3 solid pulls at 30 but no dice. I will get back there!! Doherty no heighted here which confirmed my 2nd place position. I cant say I beat Doherty, but more he beat himself. WOB was ok actually. I figured out some stuff with my technique and I think I can start taking better and cleaner shots at 16'. Going to keep practicing this. Overall, very happy with how today went. Had those weight throws counted, it would have been one of my better games ever. But fouls are fouls and they are in the past. I know the big pops are there. Going to work on my technique and keep the speed up. Thanks Alison for an awesome time! Onto the Rob Young Invitational for Throwers who like Party in Calgary Labor Day weekend.

Hey thanks, Tom!! Been nearly 3 years since a PR in that event
8/22/17 Throws HWFD x14 best of 42'+ really working on not diving left with my head and shoulder after the first turn. This is what is causing me to foul so much. Took some video so hopefully I can start to drill that feeling into my thick skull LWFD x8 best of 83' this was feeling amazing. Heavy Hammer x6 best of 103' not too shabby |
