Lifting/Practice/Lifting Monday night I wanted to do some pressing. Don’t know why I am using pauses right now, but maybe it will help somewhere down the line. Weights 2.24.14 Bench - 3x5x235 paused Slingshot - 1x20x185, 1x15x185 5 Rounds EMOM Snatch pulls x 10/pullups x 8/box jumps x 20 Practice 2.25.14 Lots of long wire line drills. Really working on settling and letting the weight hit zero. Also decided to put some work into south africans, figure all of the daily footwork should be paying off. long wire line drills x 10 toeboards (o-stone) standing o-stone x 5 south africans w/o stone x 10 south africans w/stone x 8 Still not there when I have a rock in my hand, but will get there. It is definitely improving. Weights 2.26.14 Hip pain cut my session short tonight. axle deads - worked up to doubles @ 315 fat db presses - 4x10x75s Foam rolled a lot after this, cooled down a bit and decided to do my footwork drills. Hip is still bothering me, it seems to be my piriformis again. |

Catching Up
I've been bad about keeping up with the log. To sum up the last few
weeks, we had a 3 week period where it rained nearly every day. It is
good for the ongoing drought, but bad for throwing. I've been doing
footwork drills daily as well and got in a solid week of practice this
week as things have cleared up. I learned how to sheaf this week too.
Practiced bottom drills and got some good advice on finishing the throw
and it made a huge difference. In the gym I
have been doing a lot of snatch pulls and getting back to heavy squat,
bench, and deadlift work. Hit a pr on Snatch Pulls with 255x2 at chin
level. Last weekend I took part in a backyard games. It was a
lot of fun, but conditions were pretty bad. Only throw worth noting is
that I hit 15' on WOB with the 42#. Lots of drinking and a lot of fun. Fast forward to today. I did an 8 event games today to start "practice competing" as Mike Pockoski says. Results: Braemar (with an open stone) - 36' Open Stone - 36'2 HWFD - 36'10" LWFD - 56'3" Heavy Hammer - 74'1" Light Hammer - 88'3" WOB - 15' Caber - 12:00 (too small of a stick) Made due with what was available to me. Disappointed in the Open Stone throws (felt awful) and light hammer. LWFD hit a tree branch on 2 consecutive 56'+ throws so maybe was a bit further on a real field. Needed a bigger caber, but that is all I had today. Didn't have a sheaf to throw either so skipped that one. |

Weights and Throws St Patrick’s Day 3.17.14 First deadlift session without phat grips in a while. Weights felt heavy as hell. Still doing footwork drills daily. Deads - Worked up to singles at 405 (blegh) Snatch Pulls - 4x2x255 RDLs - 3x10x224 3.19.14 Bench press night. Nothing too exciting. Still pausing which is killing me, but I figure it will do more for me even if the weights are lower. Bench - 3x5x245 Slingshot - 3x15x225 Pullups - 3x8 3.20.14 Throw session. Worked Stones, WOB, and Sheaf. All 3 are coming along nicely. O-Stone Standing Throws x 10 (most in the 33-34 range) South Africans x 8ish (most 34-36) WOB x 6 (cleared 15) Sheaf Bottom Drill x 5 Sheaf x 8 (~25 feet) Really happy about actually throwing full South Africans that didn’t involve me falling out the side or just not being able to get a “real” throw off. Had a few really good throws considering these were slow and the first night I was able to deliver the rock after spinning. I think with a little time when I get a little more comfortable with these I will see big (for me) numbers. Alan got video and I will post it here when he uploads it. The sheaf is starting to fly too. I’m really working on getting a longer, slower drive to my right foot with a strong “snatch” at the end while finishing tall. I’m hearing the thing pop off of the fork, pretty cool stuff. We had the standards about maxed out tonight and I was clearing them by a mile. Actually hit the tree branch on the way up that is a good 10’ above the standards which were about 16’ at the time. Bottom drills help immensely with this throw. Still really concentrating on pushing the E2A so that I get a long pull on WOB. I am clearing heights easily now with little effort, but still want to find that point where I can give 100% at the end to really push it up higher. I will take what I have now though and try to be happy with the improvement. |

Lot of stone work today. Spent some time on toeboards just trying to work on hip pop and a good release point, think I did a decent job. Throws: Toeboards - 5x at each position Standing throws x 10 (best ~34) South Africans x 10 (best ~35) LWFD x 15 (best ~58) Light Hammer x 10 (best 90+) I’m new to this whole South African thing, but I noticed I am slowing a tad in the middle. Looking online it appears that I should pre-turn my right as much as possible, just like I have been told with the MSA for ages. Will try that out. Standing stones are better even though the distances weren’t up. My body control and release point are much better. LWFD was good. I took about 10 throws just going nice and easy working on stretching the ball out behind me, settling, and then squeezing my knees to get some separation. It felt really good so I decided to “go” and do some effort throws. Put out a 58’ throw then hit one that felt amazing but got knocked down by a tree branch. It still ended up traveling 53’ so I would wager I was over 58 with the throw. After that I started pushing too hard and hung around 55’. Hammers are getting better. I’m trying to relax a bit and use my hips. I still can’t seem to make the connection when I want to throw versus when I just wind the hammer. When I wind it, I can pull/push the ball around and stay really long. When I want to throw I tighten up on my last wind and don’t feel the connection with the hips. Will work on that. My goal is to break 100’ this year and I am sure I can do it if I get my head out of my rear. Practice again later today. |

Practice 3.23.14 Worked WOB, Heavy Hammer, Sheaf, Caber today. WOB x 5 Sheaf Bottom Drill x 10 Sheaf x 15 Heavy Hammer x 6 Caber x 3 Tried out Oly Shoes for WOB today, liked the position it put me but didn’t like the lack of grip. Will stick with cleats here. Ended up breaking the standards. Oops. Worked sheaf hard. Really getting better pop and height although we do not have standards that go above ~17 feet so I can't say exactly how high it is going. I am tying to keep it to my right and snatch-pull hard. Happy where this is heading. Threw some Heavy Hammer too. All throws were 70+ which is a very good sign. Looking to get my hammers back up (and beyond) where they were last year pre-injuries. My games PR is only 71’+ and I would love to beat that 2 weeks from now at Ardenwood. Finished with the new B class caber to be used at Ardenwood. It wasn’t big or particularly heavy, but it is crooked and kept twisting in my hands. Really never found a position where is didn’t start twisting out of my hands while I was carrying it. Turned it but I wasn’t all that happy with the tosses. Right now I like where things are going. |

Weights 3.24 and Practice 3.25 3.24 Squat & Snatch Day Keeping squats relatively light so I can spend more time being effective in practices. I figure the goal is to throw farther so keep things moderate in the weight room and throw often. Squats - worked up to 4x2x405 Snatch Pulls - worked up to 4x4x225 RDLs - 4x10x225 Leaving a lot in the tank on squats, but that is the plan. Trying to do them faster than usual, but otherwise just trying not to get devastatingly sore. I want to throw. Snatch pulls are improving rapidly. 3.25 Practice Met up with the group for practice. Caber - twisty girls stick 3/3 turns then 17.5’ 90+ stick 3/3 turns WFD long line drils x 5 WFD short implement speed drills x 5 LWFD single throw - 58+ Heavy Hammer x 5 - all over 70 with a few out 75-77’ Light Hammer x 1 - 91+ Things are starting to come together with all of my events. Hammers are on the curve they were last year pre-injury where heavy hammer started leaping forward and the my light jumped up afterwards. WFD is becoming pretty consistent. Just wanted a “go” try after wanting to puke on line drills. Caber is better, I am pulling much earlier more often. Not too shabby. |

Practice 3.27.14 Stones and HWFD night. Toeboards x 3 at every position Standing throws x 15 (best 36’2”) Full Spin x 15 (best 37’3”) HWFD x 10 (best 36’8”) So I have been practicing with a “last throw best throw” attempt(s) at the end of practice. That is pretty much what this video entails (few extra full spins at “rep” speed in there). Working getting my throw started at my feet in the Braemar. I don’t know if I am quite doing that all that well, but I am getting decent distances with the O-Stone. Most throws were 34+ but my last throw went quite a bit farther and honestly I am not sure why. I’m attempting to get a higher left hand to open my chest up on toeboards, but that clearly didn’t happen on standing or spins. Speaking of which, I am pretty comfortable on the spin and started trying to add a little speed. Next time I will try to add a hair more and see how it goes. WFD is feels good other than I can’t seem to get the left under control when I finish. All of my throws were right around 35’ and I was gassed by the time I went LTBT. Somehow both were over 36’. Would really like to get to 40’ with the 42# this year. Mike P is telling me to squeeze the knees on the second turn, will work on it and see how it goes. |

Practice 3.30.14 Sunday practice. Worked Stones, HWFD, and Light Hammer. OStone - Toeboards x 4-5 each position, 10ish standing, 5 full spins (best 36+) HWFD - 10ish 2 spins (best 39’1”) Light Hammer - 10ish (best 93+) I think I am going to have to take a good 5-8 warmups with the full spin before I will feel confident going faster next week. It is obvious that once I get a handful out of the way I feel much more comfortable putting some speed on the movement. On HWFD I really concentrated on switching my feet quickly on the cast and squeezing the knees on the second turn. Once I got that in my head my throws took off. I beat my previous best by 2 1/2 feet and did it several times. I think 40’ by the end of the year is possible. Hammer throws were pretty consistent out around 92’ with a best 93+. Feeling pretty good about hammer for the first time in a while. I will likely lift Monday, practice Tuesday, then maybe a light practice Thursday just to hit a few events one last time. Game day is Saturday and I am hoping to put up some decent numbers this time. |

Weights 3.31.14 My wife wanted to run on the treadmill at my work gym so last night’s session was at work. A friend from the office asked me to try out some stuff he was doing for chest exercises and I sat in for a superset of things I will not mention herein. Bench - worked up to 1x5x265 and 1x4x265 paused + 2 sets of rep out with 225 Incline DB Bench - 3x10x80s Some things we will not talk about Strict presses - 3x8x155 DB Triceps Overheads - 3x10x100 Treadmill until my wife was done running. I was pretty happy with the 5 paused reps at 265, I’m getting better off of the chest. Rest of it was stupid stuff done because that is the kind of gym it is. Will do snatch pulls and deads tonight then practice tomorrow and shut it down. |

Practice 4.2.14 Practice in between rain storms. Also last practice before Ardenwood Games. 5 Turn WFD Acceleration Drills HWFD x 25 (best 40’11” PR) LWFD x 5 (best 58’+) :Light Hammer x 10 (best 92+) Pretty consistently in the 39’ range with a bunch over 40’ feet. Really trying to squeeze the knees and it is helping. It doesn’t feel like I am getting a great pull at this either. Would love a 38-40’ hwfd throw on Saturday. Timing feels a little off on LWFD, but considering that most of my worst throw was 56’ and the rest were all high 57 to mid-58. Not too bad. All of my hammer throws were over 90, I will take it. Looking forward to Saturday. |

Haven’t lifted yet this week, but planning on doing it tonight. Low back has been tight though so I am a little nervous about squatting or deadlifting. Tuesday 4.8 5 turn drills with the light weight Full spin on stones x a million Stones were all sorts of off so I took rep after rep trying to get myself to keep my feet turning. Figured out that I was diving a bit which caused my right foot to stop turning on my spin and was screwing everything up. I worked to keep myself a little more balanced and worked out the kinks. Got about 10 consecutive decent throws in by the end of the practice. Thursday 4.10 Toeboards Standing throws ostone x 10 Full spins x 10 (best 37’9”) 5 turn drills x 8 (puke) LWFD x 3 (best 60’6” PR) Felt really good tonight on stones. The problems I encountered Tuesday weren’t there. I need to slowly add some speed now. After drills I wanted a series on LWFD and ended up going 56/60/58. Pretty happy with those. Need to build on this and keep moving forward. |

My wife is running the Mountains to Beach Marathon on that Sunday, so I will be there with her. So I am just throwing for PRs on Saturday. They told me to sign up for C class and they will place me wherever they have room.

Throwing 5.4.14 and Catch Up Been pretty consistent in the gym and on the field, just not posting like I am should be. Did take a week off just because I was getting really frustrated with my progress and a little burnt, it definitely helped clear my head. Been working snatch pulls into every workout and have been finding different ways to get some volume into my workouts. Been good, I feel pretty good too. Been spending 3-4 days a week on the field still. I am seeing improvement everywhere so far this season. Been over 60 with lwfd a few times and other events are doing well. So rather than try to recap the past weeks I will just talk about today. Throwing: Stones and Hammer practice. Toeboards x 5 at each position Standing OStone x a lot (best 35+) Rotational OStone x 10ish (best 37+) Hammer Winds x10ish Light Hammer x 10ish (best 98+) Had a pretty darn good day. Video is of the “last throw best throw”
throws. On stones I had my best throw on my first then too 3 more. All
of my hammers we 93+ today with the last two being 98+ and 95+. |

Scotsfest Costa Mesa Recap So I lost my practice spot and have been inactive throwing wise for about 2 weeks, but went to Scotsfest anyway. It was an up and down kind of day and I was pretty surprised when I saw my score sheet. I think there might have been an error because it didn’t feel like I threw as well as I did. Braemar - 27’7”. This was the ugliest stone I have ever thrown, it was flat and large and came off of my thumb and pointer finger no matter which way I held it. Fail. Open Stone - 38’1”. I went with the modified south african on this day because I didn’t feel confident doing a full spin without field time for 2 weeks. Still this is the best throw I have ever had without a downhill slope and was really happy with the series. Heavy Weight for Distance - 37’7” PR. Below what I have hit in practice but happy to have a PR. Everything felt off but I was able to get a big pull on the end of these. I will take it. Light Weight for Distance - 59’4.25”. These felt terrible and slow, but I will take that distance. It is my second best showing, but still below what I have hit in practice. Weight Over Bar - 15’. The usual. The good news is I hit the bar at 16’ which is new. I don’t feel like I am getting everything behind this one and know I have 16 in me if I figure out how to get a stronger pull. Sheaf - 23’ PR. Hit 23’ easily and missed at 26+ (problems with the standards so we had to go to 26+). Probably would have hit 25’ handily. I will take it. Caber - 12:00. My first perfect 12! It was a smallish stick, but the same size as the one I struggled with at Queen Mary in February and I had absolutely no problems turning this one. Apparently I was turning my body at the end which is the only reason I didn’t hit 2 12s in this event. Heavy Hammer - 72’4” I was gassed by this point in time but this is a pretty good showing for me. The hammer felt 32lbs when I grabbed it and I grounded my first throw, then put a crappy 65’ throw out there for my second attempt. Last attempt I hit 72+ which is below my capabilities but not bad either. Light Hammer - 88’ 2.5”. Season best, but not good. I just didn’t have any juice left and my hips were very tight. Will continue to work this event. All told, this was a pretty successful games for me even if it was not up to my expectations. I had 2 PRs and 3 more season bests, which adds up to a good day. Next games is June 15th at Shafer Field in Santa Cruz and I plan to have a good hammer day for once!

I’ve been really bad about blogging lately. Had some really good practices leading up to the Duke games (yes we wore Hawaiian shirts while throwing) on Father’s Day. Throws were so-so and not up to my practice numbers, but I had a blast. Braemar Stone - 29’2” good enough for 1st in the Master’s. Threw out of a shotput circle and really didn’t feel stones anyway. Not terrible, but not what I expected today. Open Stone - 36’8” 1st. I just couldn’t get the right turning on this event. I had hoped for a big o-stone day to boost my Pleasanton resume’ but it didn’t happen. Heavy Hammer - 70’5” 1st. We couldn’t use blades on the field so I am pretty happy with that number since it is my first throws without blades in a long while. Light Hammer - 83’9” 1st. Same, but I really did not feel light hammer at all. Lunch was a big ol’ BBQ, which was fun but not great for throwing. WOB 13’ 3rd. I just couldn’t get it over 14’ here. I blame the food coma that I was in. HWFD 39’1” PR for 1st. Happy with that number. I thought I could go over 40’ but it didn’t happen. Still nice to have a PR. LWFD 51’4” 1st. Kept fouling out the right. I’ve made adjustments to my HW that don’t seem to translate to LW. I haven’t thrown LW much and need to make sure I work these in again because timing was off. Caber 17.5 80# 12:00 and 17 95# 12:30 1st. Really happy with cabers, I turned 5/6 tosses with no problem. 1st overall, but I didn’t have much competition with 4 other guys in Master’s. Afterwards we loaded Atlas Stones and I was able to successfully load the 250# stone. Happy with that. Also flipped the 850# tire and nearly got the 1053# tire over. That was a lot of fun but I am paying for it today. Next games is Portland in July. Lots of good competition going to be there and I have to refine some things and get consistent with throws if I am going to compete there. |

Did a “games style” practice where I did a warmup or 2 and then 3 throws for best distance. I only ran through 6 events and the results were pretty good. You can see the distances in the video. Ostone is getting more consistent in the 38-39 or more range. It is all about relaxing on that first step for me. I think I have a legit shot at going over 40’ in a games soon. Heavy weight is continuing to be solid for me too. I have to work on hammers, for whatever reason I haven’t been able to move those numbers much. Still been lifting 2 days a week, but have dropped all semblances of a “program”. I’ve been generally doing a few AMRAP sessions with a weight for my main lifts or 10 sets of 3s or 1s depending. My bench and front squat are reacting well to this sort of unorganized approach and that is all I can ask for. |

Portland Games Traveled up to to Portland for a quick trip/family vacation. Lots of fun and beer, terrible throwing. Finished 4th but should have given Erik Wechter a run for 3rd. Sadly I couldn’t put anything together that day. LWFD - 49’10” (4th) HWFD - 37’+ (3rd) WOB - 14’ (5th) Open Stone - 34’ (18.5# stone 3rd) Portland Stone - 11’10” (5th or 6th) Light Hammer - 82+ (4th) Heavy Hammer - 68+ (4th) Caber - no turns I was all over the place. Not consistent with my practice numbers at all. I could blame the hot humid weather, me being jittery, or all the craft brews but when it comes down to it I sucked that day. Plan for the next 6 weeks is to throw 5ish times per week and lift once a week with nothing but quick movements. Comp first weekend in August at Monterey, but really looking past that to September. Got to get consistent. |

Monterey Games Recap Thankfully had a pretty complete games! Had 2 PRs, which are always welcome, and took 1st place in Masters. The arena we threw in wasn’t ideal and we were not allowed to use hammer blades, but made the best of it. I decided to put in 6 throwing sessions between our return from Portland and this games so that I could work on the issues that showed up in Portland. It seemed to work and I plan on keeping up the high volume throwing for the next 6 weeks to get ready for Pleasanton and Inverness. As for the throws: Braemar - this was an awful rock and none of us could find a handle on it. I ended up with one ok push that went our to 28’8.5” which was good enough for 1st. Open Stone - this was a beautiful stone brought by Ron “Hankslam Rondo” McKee and I fouled a very good put when my right foot caught and made me step over. Best was 37’9.5” however, I think I had 2 or so extra feet on my fouled throw. Good enough for 1st again. Heavy Weight for Distance - this was a great series where I decided to really focus on getting my feet down quickly and hit a PR at 41’11”. 1st again. Light Weight for Distance - another good series, but I fouled the last throw when I really went for it. Best 56’11.5” another first. Heavy Hammer - 69’ on the nose. I wasn’t aware that blades were not allowed at this games so I didn’t get any practice time in without them. 2nd place. No Light Hammer because the arena was tiny. We had a long hour and a half or more break at this point because the AD wanted us to do caber, etc. for the afternoon crowd. Lost a little steam sitting three waiting. Weight Over Bar - 14’ Not sure why I have had issues on the field with WOB, practices have been great. 2nd place. Sheaf - 25’ for another PR. I cleared 25’ effortlessly then began trying too hard and pulling the bag to the side instead of straight up. I look forward to throwing sheaf again. Caber - 15’6” 100# 11:30 good for 2nd. Not a difficult stick and I turned it all 3 attempts, however, I couldn’t improve on the 11:30 and I took 2nd again. They brough out a 17’6” 110# stick for Ray Harper and I to attempt for the crowd and I was just out of gas and didn’t turn it. Neither did Ray. It was a good day and I largely treated it as a practice day for Pleasanton. I also decided to go without any preworkout, etc. this time and it helped me relax a bit. I think that is why I had consistent throws.
