For a little while now I've been having back problems, specifically the lower back right next to the spine. It was recommended to me that the smaller support muscles near the spine may not be strong enough to compensate for the rest of the muscles in my back and my hips.
I first noticed this suring a squat session where I actually felt something tighten up and twitch mid lift.
Does anyone have any suggested exercises to strengthen those support muscles near the spine? The only one I've heard was reverse back extensions.
Cheers

I think various plank exercises might help.

Things went from bad to worse last night. I was reaching down to pick something up and it felt like I was shot in the back with a 12 gauge! My back tightened up so bad I couldn't even get up off the floor without some help. Luckily after a night of massage and medications it loosened up enough to let me go to work today. The fact that it's recovering so quickly definitely tells me that it's muscular and not a disc problem. I haven't had any pain in my legs or tingling. I'm scheduled for a consult and a deep tissue massage tomorrow. Looking forward to the torture! haha |

I've had issues with that area of my low back and have found that stretching my hips helps a ton.
This guy is a bit over the top, but the stretches helped me. |
