Are there any good video's out there showing the proper glide style? I have the VP video's, and they do a great job with the breamar and spin but I am looking for details on the glide. I suppose the best thing to do is ask Don S. if I can come down and get some help. But a video would be good too. Leroy |

You can get some great videos on glide shot putting if you look around online. Granted, these are track videos that deal with shot put, not HG videos for stone throwing. But it's still a great way to learn the movements of the glide. Try going to Championship Productions and looking around for videos. The best ones are the videos from Larry Judge. You could even google "Larry Judge shot put videos" and find some good stuff. He has a video called Advanced Shot Put Technique that deals exclusively with the glide. Hope this helps. |

Go to Macvideo and watch all the glide T&F shot you can stand. Look at the classic guys from the Eastern block days. There is very little difference in tech. despite the size difference in stones. Very few HG stone putters are gliding and fewer in T&F. Energy potential is to high but in the HG conditions are not allways the best and a glider can prevail over the rotational thrower. Practice for both stones is easier as well because you will warmup with a few standing throws. |

Thanks Guys. My stone is pathetic. When I practice, I know I am consistant because the 18# stone I practice with lands in the same hole most of the time. I will check out these video's. Leroy |

Leroy if you want to put the time in I know the tech. I'm putting my 9 yr old boy through the progression (standing no reverse) these days and it's a long progression - but he's 9. Long term I think it's the way to go, however, the results with the rotational (Scottish) will come much quicker. I think the 80% stat Craig notes is enough evidence to consider the rotation. I'm throwing all winter so don't be a stranger - WED/SAT @ Eastern Bloc Strength and Conditioning.

To second mpac, Ulf Timmermann. He is proof that the glide is just as good as the spin. He had more 22m+ throws in comp than any other shot putter. And, he has sexy 80's Hasselhoff hair.

Nice subject area. I don't know if anyone in the games is as ATHLETIC as Mr. Gide...Ulf Timmerman. He was reportedly good enough to score 8,000 points in decathalon. MORAL of the story....there are a LOT of reasons why he could hit the positions that he did. GREAT model however I would look at a more "normal" human that is close to your body type and speed /strength characteristics. NON-reverse glide-Ken Lowther...I have some trememndous practice footage of him just prior to his games record at Portland.
One of , if not the BEST technicians of all time...Arthur Rowe. Don't know if he is on u_Tube. I have 3-4 throws in the video vault somewhere |

Great video. I never realized that you push off with that right leg twice. I need some time. Leroy |

Leroy, kick the left leg back forcibly as well. The two keys for me, an old guy who glides, is keeping my shoulders square to the back of the trig and then get off that right foot as fast as possible on the second step. To me, the glide is more reproducible in most conditions and if you don't have a long throwing back ground it is the way to go. I rely on power to throw and the glide lets me load up and put the stone without alot of technical ability.

Hapy gave me some great advice yesterday after my first throw, and it helped alot. There was another thrower who is a coach, and added one little tweak to what Hapy showed me and my throw went up about 4 feet from the previous attempt. They are still poor, but I can "feel" what I have been seeing on video a little more. Thanks everyone. Leroy |

I guess now is the time to really get the stone moving for next year Leroy. Throw until the weather doesn't permit then dig out the snow and throw from the pavement to practice your power position. As Carlos stated earlier on the board, "You don't have anything if you don't have a power position". I guess that really counts for all throwing but to me that is particularly applicable to the stone.

I hear ya Bill. You know my goal for next year and it aint happening if I dont throw all winter. The trick that I was shown at Scotland was to turn my foot slightly because I was not getting into the power position quick enough. That power position is everything, I am learning that. Leroy |

The reason I don't move is power position. I can stand and get so much more because I can put myself in power position. For someone who has never done track, please watch Craig. He does not have a track background and if you look at the game numbers he wins pro stone or is right there. He attacks the trig and explodes the rock out there. I am sure you could find things on the tech side that are wrong, but dude is very aggresive in the attack with huge explosion. Gets his nasty out right away on the first event. Something can be learned here. |

When I practice the OS (Two times a week...) I do the following.... 1 - Just stand there, open to the throwing field and put the stone off my shoulder, about 10 times.... 2 - I get in the power position, then put the stone.... and 3 - Put it all together with the glide.... I do not get nearly the type of increase that you would think going from Step 2 to Step 3... Maybe I am spent at that point? I don't know.
Your right! I did learn something watching his video's... I am doomed! What I noticed is regarding his right foot. Hapy spent some time and showed me that when I come back on the right foot, I need to turn it to the left, to get in that power position. Then, someone else showed me to start with the right foot slightly turned to the left and maintain that position. That has helped. I see what Craig does though is makes that transition in the air. I will try that this evening. I feel a little awkward starting with my foot turned slightly to the left, as it is harder to maintain that "squared off" posture that seems so key with the glide. Thanks for the advice. Leroy |

I tried it and it seemed to help. Turning the right foot in the air helps me land in a better power position. Still a little loose, but getting better. Leroy |
