There is no set and defined rules and there maybe barely a "tradition" covering this ....
Most Junior divisions use women weights. It has been observed that these tend to be to light for the above 16 year olds and experienced throwers -- that has been my experience.
I along with a couple local highland game athletes spent the summer throwing with a high school and college track teams. At the end of the summer, the highschooler's first competition, the standard men's weights were to be used except for:
- Heavy Weight which used a 35lb Weight
- Hammers used the 12lb and 16 lb (most did not have the core for the 22lb and it was just abusive)
- Sheaf used a 12 lb (they could have done the 16, but there was worry about techniques and tendons)
The weights were worked out with their high school throwing coach.
Caber wise, they broke three of my old cabers --- enough was enough and they got dimension lumber 2x6 cabers to practice with along with lessons on laying down the caber. I think I would use a starting C caber, at least 15' long hopefully a bit longer.
They started with the women's weights but the improvement over the summer showed they needed a heavier weight as the 28lb was to light. Almost used the 42lb rather than the 35lb but some of the 16 and under were having trouble with the 42.
What you choose is based on the experience of the throwers. My case was different in that they were already T&F throwers and they had many opportunities to play with the toys.
If they have not, their is wisdom in using the women's weights.
