hey everyone, I will be making the transition over to blades soon, and wanted to hear input on what type of shoe i should be looking at.

I think i should be looking for boots, but should i get a larger size for when i attach the blades? Also, what do i do so that i cant feel the bolts, if my blades have them? And what is the general feel im going for when i choose boots? ex: how tight should they be, and level of ankle protection.  Steel toed?

Thanks for the input everybody,

West Imboden

My boots were super cheap.  I went to the thrift store and bought a pair of Red Wing boots (they're even a size or two too big).  Then, I took a lawn mower blade (yes, a lown mower blade) and cut it in half.  Then, I sharpened the edges a bit and drilled two holes for mounting.  A couple of round head bolts under your sole coushion with a few nuts on the outside to tighten it down and lock it into place.

I've seen some awesome boots out there with heel blocks and expensive metal, so by all means don't take my word as golden.  My grandfather-in-law and I made mine about four years ago as I was just starting into this sport and didn't have the necessary money to spend a lot.  They've treated me well ever since, so I haven't seen a need to replace them.

Again, ask around; there are some pretty nice set ups that people use.

Contact Larry Brock. He should be able to hook you up with blades.

I have made a couple of beta trials of bootless blades.  Basically a blade with a step in toe and some quick release straps.  Makes the equipment bag lighter and no duck walking around.

What did you use for the step in part?

DON'T use carriage bolts. Go to a good old school hardware store and get 'elevator bolts' to attach your blades. They have a thin flat head that won't dig in to your feet if you put them in under the insole (think of the bolts on the base of your washing machine that are used to level it).

Hey, Al, got any pictures them? - sure would make practicing easier when you can take them off to walk 100ft between each throw !

(Well it's 100ft at the moment )

Gee--how well do they perform?  Those look like bicycling toe straps--am I right?

Do they stay tight on your shoe when engaged?

I have never worn hammer boots so I don't know how they would compare feeling wise.  This is just an idea I have been toying with and only made 1 as I don't like the feeling of both feet locked in.  This particular rev did indeed use straps from bicycle baskets as that's what I had kicking around.  Basically it's 1 foot of .25" steel - 6 " for the blade and 6" for under the shoe.  The top piece is 1/8" bolted on and squishing the straps and wrapping the toe.  I'm not a great hammer thrower but that 1 foot does stay locked in pretty well.

I made my first set of blades this season and I am not sure if I like them yet.  I made mine with a s-bend in them and think I might try another set with just the slight downward bend like in your shoeless sample.

Is it just preference or is there and advantage one versus another?

Also I think the next set will be longer and lock up against my boot heel.  I made my set based of a set a friend of mine had which I later discoverd was a little wacky.

Good news was that after throwing in them for 3 weeks I gained 6ft in my heavy hammer but none yet in the light.

Al--these are very cool.  Kind of ticks me off that I didn't think of them

So what would you charge to make another pair?
