I know we have some smart folks on this board and I wasn't sure where to post this question.  But watching strongman competitions of old where they flipped cars, I was wondering what amount of force or approximately how much weight would one have to lift to flip over a car.  Let's say a small sedan like a Toyota Camry about 3000 pounds.

Just wondering.

There are other people that can answer better but I'm bored and will throw out a guess... I think it's a little less than half the weight of the car... It would be exactly half in order to break one side of the car off the ground, but the springs take up some of the weight, then once you get it high enough to get the wheels off the ground, the tilt of the car has reduced the weight in your hands a bit.

I don't think anyone could flip a regular car alone... I'm pretty sure they take out the engines, trannies, etc. for cars flipped in strongman competitions.

Force=mass x accelaration. And thats about all I know Pat. You looking to start rolling small cars around a Wal-Mart parking lot like a dung beatle?

F normal = mg*cos(angle) (im assuming 90 degrees to get it over)

F norm = (1760kg * 9.81) * (cos(90))

F norm = -7736.259827 Newtons

Remembering Force is a vector you would need around 7736 N of force

Around that. Wayne Hill will now tear my math apart.

I would say Jonathan is pretty close. I know when we flip tires, the actual amount lifted is around(depending on tread style, height of tire, etc.) half of the actual weight of tire.

I would think the same to be true with the car flipping as it is in essence the same sort of lift.

For those of us that are mathmatically impaired i believe it is....

Retard strength X insane training routine / by Biofreeze + (Barbaric Scream + ligaments tearing) = flipped car

My favorite part is the parenthesis

I'm pretty sure the math here has absolutely nothing to do with the result. However it looks good, and the answer is somewhere in the ball park of where it should be. This would totally earn you an engineering degree from a state school like URI.

Well, let's just say, no.

Hint:
        cos(90 radians) = -0.4481

Jonathan's pretty much right:  the nominal force to lift one side of an object with symmetric weight distribution is half the weight of the object.

The details of the suspension can have a decent effect on the force (typically making it easier).  That's actually quite difficult to calculate, because it depends on all sorts of geometric and suspension details, backlash, tire deflection, and so forth.

In addition, you need to take into account where your grip point is relative to the wheels:  you can get some extra leverage from a grip that's outside the centerline of the wheel.  You can also get significant leverage from pushing across the top of the roof (think of pushing over a London double-decker bus by pushing at the top).

I think I just tore a ligament   I haven't laughed like that for a long time.

That's a lot of Fig Newtons... I don't think anybody can eat that many.  Not even me!
