For what it is worth:  Three out of four excel spreadsheets I use to accomplish the AD task are now up on a web-page.  They are there for any to uses and abuse or even laugh at how the number geek works.

They can be found at: http://iowahighlandgames.googlepages.com/adspreadsheets - IowaHighlandGames.googlepages.com/adspreadsheets

and the spreadsheets are:

  • Scoring Spreadsheet: Version 3 is done:  It contains a switch that turns off tie breaking for distance events, since some games do not use this methodology.  It also is a little cleaner version.

  • Budgeting:  A spreadsheet to help develop a budget for athletics.  I was not given one when I took over as an AD so I had to make one.  This is how an actuary approach budgeting:

First Step: (Variable Costs): the cost that varies by the flight/athletes (food, t-shirts, awards,....)

Second Step (fixed Costs): the fixed costs which do not depend on the number of athletes (announcer, bleachers, porta-potties,...).

These costs are balanced against registration income and sponsorship to get a final budget number.

  • *** NEW *** Score Sheet Generator:  Generates score sheets with throwers names.  Places records on each sheet based on event, throwing division, and record set. A little complicated but works well and don't have to keep on telling excel to print because it has a macro built in.

  • Scheduling Flights: This spreed sheet is not simplified and cleaned up yet and thus is not uploaded.  Driven by the the throwing division and the number of throwers, a schedule of events can be determined for each flight.  Can be used to determine where bottle necks may occur, which may allow AD to make changes so the games move along smoothly.

In highland games it is better to give then receive for in the long run, your games and this sport will benefit many times over.  If the various festivals (big and small) and AD's communicate, share, and respect each other, we all grow and benefit.

for those who care:

It was suggested that the scoring program should have a reporting facility so that each thrower's results can be printed and handed out.

An extra tab and macro were added to the scoring Excel spreadsheet for this purpose.  Thus, version 4.0 has been born.....

If anybody else wants any of these excel files customized, none of the spreadsheets are password protected but all have protection turned on to avoid data being entered where it should not.  Thus, you can easily make changes yourself (if you can figure out how they work...which is sometimes a challenge with spreadsheets).

If anybody wants customization and is not up for the challenge, please drop me a line.
