I have seen barefoot, sneakers, cleats or turf shoes, boots and actual throwing shoes (Tanels).  Personal preference, just want to make sure that whatever you wear doesn't lock your foot in too much with the ground.  If the foot can't spin, your knee will take more stress (not good). I wear a soft cleated soccer shoe.

Spikes don't make a good hammer thrower.  I would learn technique and feel comfortable with the motion before locking my feet in with spikes.

you will never learn the full proper form in the hammers without wearing hammer blades. You just won't be able to lean against the hammer enough without the boots to hold you from falling over. Without them, you will be not be reaching full extension and therefore be sacrificing speed and without a doubt, distance.

But you should at least be able to execute a DECENT throw without the boots first before worrying about making a pair. Say, around an 85' - 90' throw with the light hammer.

I wear the Tanel rpm lite turf cleats:

I like them but have found that they run small so make sure to find a place to try them on before ordering

Indoor soccer shoes in dry conditions, Tanel cleats in wet.

I'm a newbie myself (only second year) and I am still using the old, broke in  hiking boots that I have had for half a million years.  (Seriously, they are like 15 yrs old)

But they lace up the ankle and they have good tread on the bottom to grip in the grass.

I agree whole heartedly with the idea that you don't want real spikes/cleats, will end up tearing up your knee if you move wrong.

Make sure you are practicing in whatever footwear you are going to throw in.  I have seen people in other sports try to have practice shoes and competition shoes...just dumb in my opinion.

As for the hammer spikes...I don't use them yet.  After this year I will reconsider training with them for next year.  At the risk of banishment, I am going to slightly disagree with Will. (This only based on my gymnastics coaching and other sports experience.)
I have learned my hammer throws without the spikes and it really teaches you how to use your body to counter balance.  It forces you to throw your hips and shoulders around to keep upright. (I threw ~90ft two weekends ago.)  That will teach you the form.
Now as for the limit on your distances, I totally agree with Will.  You will find a point where you just cannot generate any more swing speed without pulling yourself off the ground.  Then start to train with the hammer spikes.
