I have heard a lot of guys at the games talking about tacky.  Some have had near death experiences making the stuff.  Then there is the clean up.  Just the left over stuff on the hammer worked for me but it was a pain to get off and I don't even want to think about making it.  Right now I am using pine tar and I really like it.  I get a good tack with it and clean up is not so bad.  Also, I don't have to deal with toxic fumes, bursting into flames and anything else I might be exposing myself to while using resin tacky.

However, it seems that many make it and use and I don't see other types of things being used.  So what's the deal with tacky and will I be laughed at for using pine tar?  A little help here would be great

Many times for me, all that gorrilla snot( as I like to call it) gets left on the impliments, after  seemingly every athlete befor me puts it on,so it gets too be to much. In those cases I put chalk all on my hands, that seems to help neutralize it a bit.

Usually a citrus base Goo Gone type product cleans it up pretty good.

There's a thread about cleaning tacky on the General forum.  On a recomendation in that thread, I tried Oatey's Plumber's Hand Cleaner.  It doesn't work quite as well as the petroleum cleaners but much better than the citrus cleaners.  It doesn't have the strong odor of either of those and it doesn't leave your hands dried out and shriveled, or oily.  And unlike the petroleum cleaners, it's bio-degradeable.  Good stuff all around.

It is difficult to find though.  Home Depot carries it, but not in the hand cleaner section.  It's over with plumbing supplies and you may have to ask for help finding it.

Cramer firm grip? Are you kidding? That stuff is useless. You guys would do just as well with Crisco.

I thought I coined that term "gorilla snot" for tacky back in 1995. I got it from this crazy book I read about hard-core biker gangs. When they were re-building their bikes, they'd call the liquid gasket they'd use "gorilla snot."
