Okay, please forgive me if this seems a trite question.

I have never thrown before at a heavy events.  I am not a rich man (I am a pastor who works with homeless and mentally ill - just a suggestion, but if you want to be a millionaire - don't go into this line of work).

Therefore, without a lot of money - can I get away with a sports kilt - or will I be terribly mocked - stripped of my ancestry - and be forced to eat haggis?  (Actually, I don't mind haggis).

Please be gentle in your response.  Thanks

Patrick Cameron

Sport kilts are fine. Many, many compete in them.

Well, as a pastor also I have competed in a Sport kilt. I wasn't stripped of my ancestry or anything, only the Kilt. It was waving in the OKlahoma breeze on the tines of my pitchfork like some kind of really sad celtic flag. Pretty much everybody laughed and some writer even wrote it up for all eternity....so sad.
I still wear it, I just tuck things in better before the throw. Maybe we can throw together sometime. Where you from? Western MO for me.

That's the second time I've heard about a sports kilt coming off during a sheaf toss.  Dave Carl from Michigan also shared his story about his mishap.

Daryl, I am from Grand Rapids, Michigan.  I'm trying to catch up to you - on my third child right now.

See this is something that has been lost in the last few years. more people not giving a shit about the history and culture. Too many washed up TandF guys and powerlifters.

If you want to throw, buy a REAL friggin kilt like most of us have, Wear the hose and flashings.

Thank God Kevin Henderson is becomeing that tight with KC (Yeah no hose or flashings, you won't throw.)

While I compete in a real kilt, a casual McBain, and have a dress McBain kilt, I do not see a problem with people wearing sport kilts. Some people can not afford to get a full fledged kilt right away. It would be a shame for them not to join us on the field just because they did not have a "proper" kilt and can only afford a sport kilt. We should not be as closed minded and so tight on the rules as the pipers or we will get the piper attitude (this coming from a former band piper).

How about the potential throwers that don't want to spend that kind of money just to see if they are going to be competitive?I have no problem with wearing a kilt to compete, that's part of the tradition.I personally don't own a three or four hundred dollar suit,so it's not logical for me to spend the same on an article of clothing that I'm going to throw weights and cabers in.As far as catching my SPORTKILT with the sheaf fork,I try always to chuck it with the wind in my face, too many children around.

now that answered my question...

I competed in a sportkilt once or twice then went into a traditional kilt.. I think if you compete in a traditional game you should throw with a traditional kilt..

and THROW traditionally to.. NO SPINNING FOR HEIGHT!!

said my .02 now i'm done

Wow....

That said, being a pastor must be a great job, the money of course isn't great, but really, who cares.

If we are going to start mandating that we all throw in traditional kilts, fine, let's throw in the entire  garb. I expect to see you out there in brouges, thick hose, flashes, kilt pin, leather or fur sporran, kilt belt, white shirt, black tie, kilt jacket and maybe the fly plaid. One more thing....no shorts under the kilt, LET'S GET TRADITIONAL TO THE MAX.

I could also point out that the tartan and kilt as we know it today was invented by an Englishman in the early 1800s.

Cheers.

Cameron,

I might be able to make it a little more affordable for you. My wife ordered me a sport kilt in the clergy tartan no less and it was delivered in the wrong size. If you are interested I can sell it to you at a deep discount. It is an XL and has never been worn. PM or Email me if you want a picture and are interested.

Thanks for the offer McSantoli - I just ordered a sport kilt today with a matching one for my infant son.  I may take you up on the offer later though.  What is a clergy tartan?

And if someone has a problem with me wearing a sport kilt - so be it.  I'm not trying to diss (diss - do they still say "diss") either the culture or history.  I'm proud to be of Scottish descent (1/2 Scot, 1/2 Irish) - and not willing to part with too much money.

thanks for all your replies - except for yours Snider (I think you are showing too much interest in Dave Carl's kilt  - maybe you should talk more to that porn star)

Jason Pauli - I've worked with Senior High and Mentally Ill - the only difference is that my folks can take medicine to stop acting out - by the way - it looks like the pastors in this sport also are very fertile

While we are on the tradition bug we should get rid of all non-scot throwers! That is right you should have to throw in a traditional outfit, no undies and be full blooded Scotish...If it's not scottish it's crap.

How many of us would be left if that happened? I would be out for two reasons I am FBI (full blooded italian) and I am a "washed up TandF guy!!!!

PS - I think those washed up TandF guys are some of the best in the game!

Who cares if you wear a Sports Kilt! You're still wearing a kilt. You've also showed that you're really proud of your Scottish heritage because you said that you are not willing to part with too much money. If that isn't a Scot talking I've never heard one then.

Brian,

Every now and then someone mentions tradition here.  If you're for tradition then you should know that "traditionally" there were no amateur classes.  If you are a pro that's good.  It's one less amateur for Valenti to hate.

And please don't tell me you're all for real kilts and you bought yours off a rack.  That's way too non-traditional.

If you have somone in the family that sews, you can get a kilt pattern at the fabric store and I see one all the time (when you search "Highland Games") on Ebay. The fabric store usually has plenty of tartan "Suiting" or Poly blends that you can use and you can usually find something on sale. Stay away from flannel or print plaids and cottons as the shrinkage will not flatter the pleats.Good Luck.

I think it only fitting that you bequeath that Freddie Mercury belt to Valenti.  Then, if he grew the moustach........i can see the sponsors coming already.....

[QUOTE=Jason Pauli]Geez how many pastors are in this sport anyway?

Another pastor thrower here!  If the funds ever come my way (most likely from my wife's job more than mine) I plan to buy a traditional kilt.  I still don't know if I could be out in the dust, mud, and tacky in something that cost that much.  Cheap is good for most scots is good enough for this one too!

Threw my first year in a mini-kilt my mom made - they are still laughing about that one -"Mom!!!It's supposed to go to the knees!!" Second year I upgraded to one I laid out w/ two whole pleats made out of material on sale - when I brought it all pinned up to the seamstress here in Austin - she said and I quote " Glory be to Jesus , I said I'd never do another fookin' kilt again !" She was from the olde country and is still laughing at my bathwrap kilt. SO, for Fathers' Day last year I got a Sport kilt ....and gosh.....I finally feel like a Real Highlander . This Scot will NEVER spend that much $ for something to sweat in and wad up ....well....maybe when my daughter marries...that'll freak her out    Just throw baby.

I have a size 44(not american pants 44 because I am a44 and it is too small. I would guess it is a 38-40 in the US. It is a pipers kilt and I got it off of ebay for $25.00 + shipping and will sell it for $30. It is a new nice kilt.

I took it out of the package brand new and tried it on once said nope, Flounder tried it on once siad nope, and other than that it has sat on a shelf, so almost perfectly brand new.

I'll post a pic in a few when I get home.

Craig,

I almost referred to my belt as my Freddy Mercury belt.

Everyone was right... it DOES look a lot like that.

And no... you are not getting my red tye dyed socks, or my Ronald McDonald socks, or my Cat in the Hat socks.

Go buy your own.
