I was going to be going to Pilot Knob this spring. This was going to be my first games. But I have a wife that thinks that just because I can no longer lift my right arm that I need to get it checked out by the orthopedic doc before continuing with this sport.
I am just wondering if of you know if its possible to still throw after shoulder problems?
I really love the way all of you seem to be great friends and competitors at the same time. You don’t see that in many other sports.
Just feeling sorry for myself! I was hoping to be out there with a lot of you. Maybe I still will, who know.

Hey dog, better check that thing out.Sounds like rotator cuff without much information. That can cause problems for a long time if not attended to.Had some trouble myself a couple of years ago but, not serious. Some rest, learned afew exercises to strengthen it,came around nicely.I'm an EMT too. It's easier to help others than to take care of my own problems sometimes, listen to your wife.

I was doing the sheaf in my second competition and when my left shoulder stopped for the “flick” a noise came out of my shoulder. It sounded like someone ripping a sheet of paper in my ear. A smart man would have been done for the day, not me! I went on and competed in the WFH and the caber. Extreme pain when the beer and the Ibuprofen left my system. I went to rehab the physical therapist said my muscles are so strong that he could not evaluate them but when my shoulder is relaxed basically it’s a sloppy mess. He said that when my shoulder went up in the sheaf toss it rotated out of my shoulder it crushed a ligament or tendon (I always get those confused) He had me do a bunch exercises to increase the blood flow to the shoulder so it could heal. After the range of motion increased he showed me cable exercises to strengthen the supporting tissue. This process took about 4 months. My shoulder is now stronger than it was before the injury I can shoulder press 225 * 3 and push press much more. I have noticed a reduced volume of exercise that my shoulder can handle. I Here are my recommendations
- Find good physical therapist Tell them what you want to do (heavy events) and listen to him(her).
- When you do start lifting Decrease the volume of heavy shoulder lifts and give the shoulder time to rest. Do Quality not Quantity
- Never swing a child around by his or her arms. That is what originally messed up my shoulder 25 plus years ago!
Good luck!

Heh. My wife and I were visiting some friends, and I ended up
carrying their foster son around on my shoulders for what seemed like
hours. All the while, I wondered what he weighed, and settled on
a guess of 42 lbs. When I finally got to unload the tyke (what a
relief), I asked them what he weighed. They said, "42 lbs.
Why?"
My wife and I exchanged glances and she said, "If we could arrange a
good handle, Wayne could toss him over a 14' bar." Then they
exchanged glances of their own.

If you have a tear, there is only so much time until it can be repaired correctly. The quaility of doctor is also a huge factor. I had mine done by the Andrews and Cain. You will notice they will fix Chad Penningtons shoulder today. They do all the top guys, Jordan, Bo, Pipen, Manning, Schmoltz, K monster, Clemens, Big Sexy, Triple H, you name it, Kerry Wood was laying next to me.

Thanks everyone, I was really looking forward to starting this spring. I might just have to do what the Dr. says and maybe just help with some of the games this year to learn all that I can.
Or I might have to try to throw Left handed!!!! You never know I might be able to start out left handed with no bad habits.
Just a thought!

Hey Dog,I train both arms fairly evenly. Most events I throw righty but some I throw lefty in comp.I do this in case something does happen at an event.I might not do as well, but I can finish the day.Besides,I don't want to strecth one arm 6" longer than the other.

Baab just lets this pass without comment? No mention of Dave Barron in the "Do you go both ways?" thread? What the hell is this board coming to? We have to stamp out runaway decency and political correctness before it gets out of hand.

I had to point out he was laying there or he would have been lost in the crack between the sheets and the pillow. Guy is a stout 6'5 and 165 looking. They told me it was neuromuscular control that he has that I don't, and that was why the PR guy, doctor, team guy, local paper, wife, secretary, possey and rehab guy were collected around his million dollar 11 inch arm and ignoring the large artillary next to them. No appreciation. I can't believe you guys would mock me with such a serious situation at hand. Shocking on the day after valentines day with the individuals in our sport.

Kiltbadger,
It is a little better but I cant tell if its from laying off the work outs or all the pain killers I am taking for a bum tooth. I havent had time to go to the doctor yet. I might just give it a try in a few days to see what happens.
I see on Ancient Athletics that Scott Runnels has opened the registration for the Arcadia games in Pilot Knob! But its along way to go just to throw once and go home crying !!!!!
We'll just have to see what happens!!

I have to agree with Myles about having the right doctor. I am lucky to
have found a doctor that listens to your goals before deciding on a
plan of attack. That is not common.
He knows my goals include the gym and throwing, so we
make decisions based on that. He is quick to pull the MRI card when he
knows I want a definate answer. Plus he knows when it is time to ship
me off to a specialist (when the injury is beyond his expertise).
For instance, I hurt my shoulder throwing a STUPID JAVELIN this past
weekend. Got an office visit for noon today, and the MRI is scheduled
for tomorrow. If I am going to pay for health insurance, I am
sure as heck going to use it!
Keeping the fingers crossed for the phrase....
"well, the good news is that your rotator cuff is not torn".
...I am furious with myself that I go to the gym daily, throw heavy stuff for fun, and I hurt myself throwing a stupid spear that weighs 800 grams.

I know what your talking about. Its the little things that will screw you up. I lift wts all the time and I carry big people around up and down stairs at work every day. But the worst I hurt my back was when I turned to put the tooth paste back in the cabinet. Put me to the floor and in bed for a week.

Hey Big Dog,I know exatly what you are talking about.I'm a volunteer firefighter/EMT.The local ambulance service light up when they see me on a scene;especially when it involves a large patient.I lift heavy in the gym too. When you did the toothpaste incident, was it first thing in the morning?Because if you did, there may be a cause. In the morning your vertebrae are relaxed and ever so slightly elongated for about the first hour.It makes you more prone to injury.I've read that if you check your height in the morning,by nightime you may be 1/2" shorter.

Yep it was 1st thing in the morning. Maybe I need to tell my wife that I need a little "WARM UP" first thing in the morning. Just to save the old back!!!!!!! Yeah right!!!!!!!! She would tell me to "WARM UP" just like I work out "BY MYSELF"
I might just be a little shorter because the world just seems to be wearing me down. Maybe a little from both ends!!!

I usually get hurrying around and it bites me every once in awhile.I was laid up for 2 weeks because I dropped my truck keys and spun around to pick them up.Those twisting motions in the morning are a nono for me.I think maybe some of those stupid things I did when I was younger are starting to catch up with me too.

You mean that we are supposed to stop doing stupid stuff as we get older? I didn’t get that memo. I’ve been going about this all wrong!!! From now on NO STUPID STUFF!
Wait a minute that means no fun for me?!?!?! Strike that, stupid is as stupid does!!! Terry

Let's put it this way;I try not to put myself in a bad position in the weight room or anywhere for that matter.Anymore I err on the side of caution if possible. When I was younger I had a bad habit of running in head first no matter what the situation.Cost me alot of set backs.Haste does make waste.I may still participate in unorthodox endeavors, but not anything that would be detrimental to me.
