so i have a question, what's the difference between the Zercher squat and a front squat, as far as muscle groups worked and benefits? Whenever I do front squats, or what I thought were front squats, i ususally hold the bar like that because my wrists have problems holding the bar higher. Am I missing out on something, or is that fine?

Very impressive lifting Craig.
We all followed your lead last season with front squats and improved our throws. This season with the zercher we will all be looking to shatter our PR's.

Yeah, yeah, yeah... that was pretty impressive alright.
But if you don't show on the 19th with a few cases of Powerbars for me and Jimbo then we're done being impressed!

You're seriously holding the bar in the crook of your elbows? For a "front"?

yeah, it seems to hurt less there. Mind you this, I basically just started squating this year and even then, I couldn't do back squats because i couldn't get my arms back without some crazy shoulder pain, so I did "fronts," but when I put the weight high, the pain in my shoulder came back, so i put it lower...

No matter how good you do, someone always has to come up with, yea, that is great, but you should see so and so. Craig doing a raw Zerker is just like some guy going camping in a canvass tent and while he is there doing a bench?

i realize your intent was to praise craig, but you do realize comparing a 600lb zercher and a 600lb conan carry is beyond preposterous? akin to congratulating andy bolton on his 1003 deadlift then asking if he felt in the company of all the strongmen who do car/silver dollar deadlifts with straps from mid thigh with 1000.
just the feat of walking out backwards and supporting 600 for a zercher squat is an entirely different animal than holding a 600 conan that's lever supported where you can lean back into the apparatus. not to mention squatting in this bastard position.

True but still bet 99.9% of the people on this board cant do 700 with or without a shirt.. Except for D. Brown
still that was a HUGH Z lift...

Craig,
First, nice lift.
Second, what do you feel are the advantages/benefits of doing Zercher's as opposed to front squats? I am just curious as I have never done them before or even personally known anyone who has ever done them. How long does it take your arms to get used to holding the bar like that?
Peter.

Peter - Craig does Zerchers 'cause he can't put a bar on his shoulders (personal issue from a cheerleader lifting incident years ago....I just can't go into it too painful)....he got me hooked on them a few years back ...you will never, ever have a stronger core or erectors or quads...use a pussy pad and it's not so bad....it's a change up for fronts - he's good at those too....will freak out fellow gym people.

Thanks Mike. I should have known they were in your "mix" .
How is your training going so far relative to all those lifting and throwing PRs you were hoping for back in January? I am a bit behind schedule myself. I kind of neglected to factor in the increased recovery time and slower progress involved when one is 40+ as opposed to 20+. The 405 front squat (deep and 100% raw) is looking very unlikely this season, but 385 should happen by Saline. We'll see what happens in the weight room over the next 6 weeks or so, and more importantly, what happens on the field at Alma, Saline, and Detroit. I am hoping to learn how to throw in the period between Alma and Saline...
Good training.
Peter.

Peter- 42 wob conventional standing PR of 19' (best in 4 years) and smacked 20' twice- it will fall this fall , 15.3 56 wob - best in 5 years - hoping for 16' this year , best 42 throw ever 51.9,a 70' 28 throw, matched sheaf PR last week- I would say the offseason was a success. After the Texas games in early June, it's back to the gym for 3.5 months - we go into a summer off-season - getting stronger for the MWC in late Sept.Fronts, zerchs, Timmermans, hi pulls , snatches , step ups , pushpress, Russian twists 'till I die or get stronger.

Peter -
they are just entirely different than a front squat. The core is worked so much more with a zercher vs. a front. Like Baab said, everything gets hit, upper back, traps, etc.... I even used an 8ft. bar for the 605, just to add a little more core to it. Walking it out and stabilizing that is good for what we do.
that being said, i do front squat also.
If you've never done a Zercher, you really just need to do it to fully appreciate it. Use a little bit of padding and your arm will never even notice it.......much

BIGMATT- It's like a jumping goodmorning squat...bar on shoulders , compacting yourself as far down as possible and dynamically exploding up and out , landing and immediately rebounding up - I do sets of 5 - start really light(the bar) to get used to it.All about speed and bounce - lots of us are really strong, but need really explosive more . You WILL throw wob higher if you have a steady diet of these in your program.

Zerk is a cross of front and deads. More haunch than fronts. And of course that crazy holding the thing with the arms, I don't feel the weight crushing them kind of thing. I have not seen anyone come close, I mean neighborhood even with C on this. And trust me I have been in the dungeon and tried everything to get in that area. Nope.
