After judging my first women's competition, I realized that I have no idea how big a women's caber should be. None of our women were able to pick the caber. Admittedly, it was the first time for all but one of them, but it still would have been nice to have a competitive caber. Any advice on general size/weight? My thoughts are that it needs to be thinner than the men's, especially at the base, so they can get a good grip on it. I just don't know what size is appropriate. Any help here would be appreciated. We have another competition coming up in May, and I'd like to have a good caber for the women by then.

Thanks,

Josh

What size was the caber you used?  Also what was the skill level of the women throwing?

Appropriate Caber sizes have been discussed http://www.nasgaweb.com/forums/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=3734&PN=1 - here , in the database forum.  Here is an excerpt:

For determining appropriate caber size you may first want to learn about the "Bradshaw Scale" for rating cabers.  The topic has been discussed at length on this board before and can be found http://www.nasgaweb.com/forums/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2432&KW=%22caber+ranking%22 - here.   You do not have to actually use the formula and rate your own cabers, but I feel it helps you understand how to gauge a caber's level of difficulty.  Tony Dziepak created Caber Guidelines on his webpage ( http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/8682/heavy/caber.htm - Scottish Heavy Athletics ) which I believe is well utilized by AD's.

Recommended caber sizes for competition:

Depends upon the caliber of the competition, but in general:
class         pro   A    B  C/M/190 W
min length 17' 16' 15' 14' 12'
max length 22' 21' 20' 19' 17'
min weight 105 90 75 60 30
max weight 155 140 125 110 80
min w/l ratio 5 4.5 4 3.5 2.5
max w/l ratio 8 7.5 7 6.5 5.5
min rating 600 500 400 300 200(364)
max rating 1200 1000 800 600 400(727)

Thanks for the info. The group we had were all novices and the caber was approximately 13' X 95lbs. Definitely too big for a novice class. I'm on the lookout for a better caber now. Thank you very much for the guidelines, now I know what to look for.

For novice women, I use a 13' long, 45# stick that rates 230 on the scale above.  Any woman who's strong enough to compete at all should be able to pick it and, once able to control it, turn it.

My women's competition caber is 14' long and weighs 55#, rating 350.  That's more like it for experienced women, but is still too easy for Terri James, who tosses it for distance, height, and accuracy.

We all know that Terri takes Women's Highland Games competition to "a whole 'nother level"!

One little fact a lot of people never mention(or don;t know) is that the way she picks a caber is totally wrong(but it has worked wonders for her)but she does it this way since she has no feeling in 3 of her fingers on her right hand and partial feeling in the other two(old police injury)..so picking a caber is tough but throwing is even harder as she has to time her release-but thats just the proud spouse and training partner talking

Yeah, I've caught some newbie women trying to emulate Terri's pick, and told them, "No, don't try to do it the way she does:  she does that because she has to.  It's a lot easier to do it the right way."

I always wondered how Terri would do with a much heavier caber... I know that if i tried to pick the way she does,  it would be disaster city.

Yeah, I know.  I think she could turn my LW/Masters qualifier, if she could pick it.
