| Has anyone ever succesfully brought a slightly light stone up to legal 16 lbs or 22 lbs by drilling out a hole and adding a bit of lead? I found the ultimate open stone at a weight of 15.5 lbs...who has lab results? |

Fairly easy to do. I recommend drilling a small hole, no bigger than an inch, best around a 3/4". Melt the lead and poor into hole to specified weight. The big problem is keeping the lead in the stone after it has been thrown for a while. Nothing a patch of duct tape won't help. Also, if you make a hole too big and you are not slow and deliberate in making that hole, the rock will break then or in the future. Also, throw the stone sparingly and not on hard ground, again, lots of practice on hard ground will break the stone for sure. ------------- "I am the thread, the pupil, and the eye of the needle is my teacher" |

This might be a good time to wonder why we don't all just switch to
throwing shots. Same size, same weight, no looking for the "sweet spot"
or wondering if the stone is legit (or is going to break). Throwing
stones made a certain sense traditionally - but it looks like the
ranking system is here to stay, and if we want to keep accurate track
of records (yeah, I'm looking at you AGM) then wouldn't it make sense
to use uniform implements?

One of the ironies of the games is that in Scotland most of the competitions do use 16 and 22 pound shots and not stones. We Americans and the Canadians have kept that tradition alive. In the three games I did compete in Scotland, they not only threw the iron shots, both throws with open and no Braemar. However, at Kenmore they had the boulder toss. That was fun. More boulder tosses would be better than that stuupud sheaf. You guys hack it out. Perhaps a couple of ADs might try the iron shots for a year, or some smaller games might try it and get feed back from the athletes.

How about instead of pouring molten lead into a hole, try using epoxy and a lead rod, slightly smaller in diameter than the hole. It won't be falling out. 1. Because we already have track and field for those people who want that sort of thing. 2. Because that would give too much of an advantage to shotputters. 3. Because stones are way cooler. 4. Because we pay enough for practice equipment as it is - who wants to go buy a couple of shots? I'd rather go to a river and pull out a rock. 5. Because even if I wanted to buy a 22lb shot, where would I get one? I took a quick look at M-F Athletic Company's website - no 22lb shots to be found anywhere. Rivers and streams are easy. 6. Because stones are more manly. 7. Because sometimes 22lbs just isn't heavy enough. 8. Because if you're heading out to practice and someone asks what you're going to do, would you rather say "I'm going to throw some stones" or "I'm going to go play with my metal balls"? 9. Because nobody is crazy enough to go tell Brian Oldfield that we're wiping out his world records because we don't want to throw stones anymore. 10. Because stones are more macho. |

Will: I've added lead to a stone. There are a couple of issues to be aware of: 1) Make sure that you have a "vise" to hold the stone solidly in place (if the drill binds, you won't be able to hold the stone). 2) Try to make the hole large enough that when the lead is added, the Center of Gravity coresponds closely with the center of the stone. 3) Keep the stone dust: once the lead is added and weight is verified, then you can go to the home store and get some latex grout adhesive and mix it with the dust left over from the stone. Fill in the rest of the hole with your "grout", smooth and let dry. This hold the lead in, and once the stone gets some grass and dirt on it, no one will know the difference.

is actually possible to add a full 1/2 lb in weight to a stone? I imagine most who have done the lead thing are looking to address a lack of a few ounces... what kind of drill does one need? drill bit? anyone know how large a hole to make up 8 ounces?

First of all, rocks have much more 'character' than a shot. But, to drill a hole in a rock you will need a hammer drill (and make sure you have the hammer action turned on) and a hammer drill bit. Make sure the bit you end up getting has enough 'drill depth' to get the hole you need. Also if you end up using a lead rod, make sure you don't have to force it in as this could also possibly fracture it. The only problem can be that the process of drilling may fracture the rock. Gentle down pressure on the drill. Someone needs to go find a creek up in the Mtns. with a lot quartzite or metaquartzite in it and bring back a load of candidate rocks. ------------- 'They said they'd never seen that kind of power and endurance. Will: I added close to 9 ounces. it doesn't take a lot of lead to make 9 oz. A hammer drill might fracture the stone; it would make the hole easy and fast, but the "hammer" action could kill your stone. To avoid this, I used a drill press with varying sizes of masonary bits. I think that I went up to a 3/4" hole. that ended up being 4-5" total (I actually drilled to holes that were 90 degrees from each other and joined in the center of the stone).
