My money would be on Karelin though.

My bet would be Bruce Jenner as he already has the basic skills of the sport.  However,  Bo Jackson would be tough as well with his natural athletic ability

Karelin threw men around like toys. A 56lb weight would be a joke for him. Off the street Jenner would win, with training Karelin would probably make everyone look bad. Samuelsson and Bo Jackson wouldn't do badly either.

I did not want to put anyone too obvious like Alekna.

I have to agree Karelin is just a freak.

Paul Anderson the strongest man to ever live and possible the fastest......remember the Eastern block weight lifters were crap before Anderson showed they how to squat.........But anderson it to short and fat right? ya you have to be tall like the best of the best in highland games right?

Ideal Body Type Hmmmmmmmmm

ts funny how that works Anderson starts the rise of the Russian weight lifters then Arnold starts the fall of USA strength athletes
next
Magnus Samuelsson.....

Karelin and Jackson are impressively strong but we are talking about elite strength in Magnus......Karelin and Jackson owe success to athletic ability, Reactionary athletic ability which is largely irrelevant in highland games

notice the press at the end, not a jerk or evan a push press
thats insane power you  guys are missin the boat he would rock the 56, 28 with that pull power and the caber would be history WOB may be a little chalenge with his limited height but with 1 month to learn CRS would preval !!!!!!

If all of them had a year maybe he would be beat but in one month thats about 5-6 days per event CRS and speed would be king!!!!!

remember Kaz in the WOB? was that great Bo jackson like grace and speed NO thats Giant Freakisk Spinal erectors

I'm with Steve. I'd like to see a 7'1" Wilt working the hammer over the top- (as long as he was wearing an old skool yellow Lakers uniform with the high water shorts and tube socks to his knees)

With no practice, Jenner wins the overall.  He was a 50 or so shotputter, and 160+ in the disc. And he most likely toyed with a hammer somewhere in his career.  Of course I'm biased being a former decathlete

I did read somewhere that Karelin would do zerchers off the floor with 455lbs!

Karelin,Is a massive standout. Did you know he tried Oly Lifting but the russian team was already to deep for super heavies and was better suited for Roman Greco. He was 16 lbs at birth. I think his body weight was 275 and under 8% body fat. Only scored on once and only lost once. Take into consideration his flexibility. I think he would spank everyone. Not to take away the sucess of others. Karelin wasn't called the experiment for nothing.

Karelin
Magnus/Akebono (tie)
Roaf
Jenner

If Akebono gets to compete in a Shinto shrine, then he's #1.

I'd love to see Karelin v Akebono. Now that would be worth the pay per view dollars...

Gotta go with Alexander.  Being a former wrestler and current coach I'd say he'd win anything after watching him on the mat.  Any doubters need to watch the video on the top right.  The guy he is reverse body locking weighs over 300 lb's.

how about Velichko Cholakov?

I think you are all just scared of Karelin......in the end he is the great westler BUT why do you think he would thow as far as Anderson. Anderson is stronger in ever respect, speed = 480 clean and jerk with a stiff bar? today Im sure he would have been closer to the 600lbs mark (he stoped doing oly lifts early so he could be a pro strongman)

Anderson
Bench: 627 pounds

Squat: 1206 pounds

Deadlift: 820 pounds, he pulled a massive 1000 pounds using metal hooks attached to his wrists. This assisted deadlift was witnessed by Tommy Kono

Clean and Jerk: 480 pounds

Push Press: 600 pounds, witnessed by Bob Hise

One Arm Press: 380 pounds, 300 pounds for ten reps; this 380 pound lift was the greatest lift ever lifted overhead with one arm; both were witnessed by Paul Magistratte

Backlift: 6270 pounds, witnessed by Kara Whitfield and Maurice Payne, included in the Guinness Book of World Records
More info

Squat: 900 pounds for 10 reps, John Grimek was a witness to this

800 x 10 (2 sets), Pat Casey was a witness to this

900 x 1 (3 second pause) {done easily in 1956} [witnessed by Iron Man
author, but I do not have his name]

Olympic Press: 425 x 3 (just missed 3rd rep) {exhibition at 1958 dual meet with Russia, this is back when an Olympic press was strict} [Peary Radar was a witness to this]

400 x 7 {1957}

Nah - you're all wrong - Roaf trains for speed, is athletic ,understands technique (that's an offensive lineman's whole game), is obviously coachable AND is fit - won't get hurt...THEN Magnus...then the wrestler.

I can tell this is a fringe sport.  Man, who else would even know who these guys are?

Karelin.  For sure. I don't even buy that Anderson was stronger.  Which may get me shivved, but hey.  Ever stand next to an elite wrestler?  Yes?  Now think about a guy who stompitty-stomped elite badasses for 16 years.  Dude's just made out of a different knda meat.

Anderson - Deseased

Wilt - Deseased or diseased

Akebono - bad pins

Bo - bad Hip

Jenner - to small and Michael Jackson nose

Roaf - MCL could be a problem?

Magnus - Big and strong with speed

Karelin -  Big enough strong enough and fast enough with major flexibility.

Karelin will win everything except 56,wob, and Braemar Caber a tie. Magus gets spanked in the hammers.

I wish I had a nickel for everytime some bodybuilder, powerlifter, wrestler or olympic lifter showed up at one of my training camps and went home w/ their head shoved completely up their ass and both hamstrings pulled- the wrestler would NEVER even touch Butkus -just tellin' the truth Kel - not being an ass.....G-man - good try - he was a defensive tackle  -you know how coached decide if a kid plays offense or defense? On the 1st day they all line up in front of the stadium wall - the coach yells "Charge!" - if you smash your head on the wall you play defense- if you go up the stairs- you're offense

Akebono: Big, strong, but not nearly as mobile as you
would expect from a sumo legend - watch him in K-1
fights, where he looks slow and awkward. No way. His WOB
would be awesome, though.

Bo Jackson: Great all-around athlete. He'd be pretty
good, but lacks size. Yeah, Alistair is smaller. Bo's no
Alistair.

Wilt Chamberlain: Too big. Probably would do great with
the WOB, caber and hammers, but at over 7' would
probably need to single-spin the weights and Braemar the
open stone to stay in the box.

Willie Roaf: Sorry, don't know the guy.

Bruce Jenner: Great athlete, good thrower, too small.

Alexander Karelin: One of the most dominant athletes
ever, in any sport. In a sport of very big, very strong
men, he was considered insanely strong, to the point
where his opponents were not just intimidated, but
actually afraid of him. World-class wrestlers would not
try to win, but just try not to get hurt. He can do
whatever he damn well wants.

Magnus Samuelsson: Big, strong, quick, athletic, tall
but not too big, long arms and legs. There's a long
history of strongmen crossing over and doing well -
didn't Magnus Ver once take third at the world
championships? Ziljstra has had a decent run, too.
Magnus would do well.

Paul Anderson: Inhuman strength, but too short, fat,
slow.

My picks: Karelin, Samuelsson, Chamberlain, Jenner

gotta disagree with you as far as Wilt and the open stone, he was a 50 ft shot putter at Kansas in the 50's. As far as a single spin in the WFD, possibly, but talk about your long levers . Most people don 't realize how strong he was, but in his prime, he benched about 465 lbs.

With just one month to train and 9 events, would any of that crew be able to master the WFD two-spin? Would a wise coach even try to teach it?

Oh yeah, if I had to add one name to that list to really make the choice tough it would be ... Michael Carter.

If we are going to add throwers in their prime, let me throw in Randy Matson (WR,Oly Gold Medal in the shot, drafted by the NFL, and the NBA, 6-7, 265), and Dave Laut( I trained with him for 4 years, Oly Broze in the shot)

In 1979, when Michael Carter threw 81-3 1/2 with the 12 pound shot at the Golden West Invitational, I was standing about 20 feet away. Explosion doesn't even come close to describing that throw. It was incredible.

Impressive, but on 4-8-67, Matson threw 70-5 1/2 in the shot, and 213-9 1/2 in the discus, on the same day
The shot mark was 1 3/4 inches off his own world record , and the discus was a New American record, and 2 inches off the world record, held by Ludvik Danek.

Matson's clearly a better T&F thrower. He'd spank Frank in the stones and 28, but I'd take Frank in the WOB and caber, and at a weight of 380lbs or so I think he'd have an easier time with the 56 than Matson at 245lbs. No clue about the hammers - that seems to be a frequent weak point for shot/discus people, and less responsive to overwhelming brute strength than other events.

Posted By: big MAC
Date Posted: 2/01/06 at 9:25am

If we're talking throwers I'd say Alekna would beat everyone. Matson included. The only one I'd be scared of is Mike Carter and even then, Ulf Timmerman owned him explosiveness and strength wise most likely.

Karelin is still my man in this case.

Matson was such a good athlete, I think he would have found a way. Matsons weight marks were not all that good, 400 lb bench, 485 in the squat, but he was, like Michael Carter, very explosive. After he graduated from Texas A&M, he was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons, the Seattle Sonics, and the Dallas Chaparelles of the old ABA. I guess he was pretty athletic. As far as brute strength goes, in 1971, at the Mt Sac Relays, I saw Matson throw 69 feet, standing, during his warm ups.

Ulf was a thrower along the lines of Matson, Albritton, etc, tall, and very athletic. AS far as throwers who also excelled as weight lifters, I have to throw Al Feuerbach and Ken Patera into the mix.

As far as Alekna goes, yes he threw 230 or so to win the Worlds. Matson threw 213 almost 39 years ago. And Ben Plucknet threw 233 almost 25 years ago. Current crop has some catching up to do.

Given enough time, he probably would. But to make up that kind of weight and strength advantage over a guy who threw the shot within 95% of his best, with only one month of training, seems unlikely to me.

Hey, What about "The Greatest of All Times" Muhammid Ali?  He had strength, speed, agility, and an incredible will to win.

however, my favorite memory of Ben would be in 91 or so, after the Fresno Games, Ben doing cannonballs at the motel pool. At 6-8, and 330 or so, he displaced a lot of water. Wish I had gotten video of that

The only thing I'm suggesting about bodyweight in Frank vs. Matson is that someone 380 and insanely strong will be more able to adjust to the 56 (for distance - not WOB) than someone 245, within the first month of training. WOB I'd give to Frank based on a 900+ deadlift, and enough explosiveness for a 67+ shot. Caber I'd give him based on insane overall strength - it takes more than a month to learn good caber technique, so someone who can just muscle around a big stick has the edge. I'm not arguing that Matson wouldn't eventually be the better all-around thrower. But the original question was who can do it with one month of training.

I worked for Bekins during the summers to put myself through college and one of the people I moved was Russ Francis. From this sleepy little area of San Carlos up to this Serious condo Apt thing in SF. His Woman was a real piece of work I remember the Lead guy telling her we weren't decorators and find a home for this stuff and quit making us moving it around. I heard shortly after that he up and split to the Islands. Real strong and impressive guy heard the 9er's had special insurance on him because he was a bit of a thrill seeker.

Why has no one mentioned Chuck Norris yet?  He we wipe the floor with any one of the guys previously mentioned.  Besides, they would all be sand bagging anyway to avoid the roundhouse kick awaiting them if they would happen to beat Chuck Norris.

I will give you Frank in the 56 WFD and the WOB. Not sure I would give him the caber. But I would take Matson in the stones, the hammers, because of his height and long arms, and the 28. If my math is right, that gives him the aggregate. And his competitive weight was usually around 260-265. The only time I am aware of him throwing at 245 was his sophmore year at A&M, after he played basketball.

He's listed in the USATF Hall of Fame at 6' 7" and 245lbs. But yeah, I just saw an interview on the Long & Strong site where he says his ideal weight was 265. He also claims slightly better lifts than you mentioned: 445 bench, 510 squat.

Alekna's competition PB is 242'5". If he spent his life throwing in the conditions Plucknett did instead of focussing on major meets in bowel stadiums I'm sure he'd throw even further.

MR T kicks Chuck Norris' ass.

Mr T is the only person to survive a roundhouse kick to the face from chuck norris. Mr T's tears cure cancer, too bad he has never cried, ever.

and if back in the day, throwers like Ben had been able to earn a living throwing, and train full time, they may have gone a lot farther, but it was am only back then, and everyone had to have a day job.

Alekna has a day job, he's a bodyguard.

Mr T wins hands down.

Brother Jay,

You're good, damn good. Actually, I only knew about three - Brian, Laut, and Baryshnikov. Back then the spin was pretty new. Baryshnikov was the first to use it at a high-level but it wasn't until Oldfield really started bombing with it that it generated a lot of interest. Oldfield was even kind of notorious for launching monster spins in warm-ups and then gliding during the comp. At any rate, there seems to have been a period in the 60s and 70s (early 80s) when accomplished gliders would convert to the spin and it seems that is when those few 70-70 guys appeared. By and large, after that period I can't imagine any putters would switch after 19m.

You gotta figure a tall spinner like Barnes could have done it too. He glided all through HS very successfully. I'm told he did tinker with the spin in his senior year (I had a student some years back who threw against Barnes in HS and was competing at a meet where Barnes took some extras to entertain the crowd and tried the spin, his recollection on the distances was spotty but he said Barnes was launching the ball well past his best glides but having a hard time staying in the ring and the sector).

Cheers,

The first high school spinner I saw was in 1968. Named Phil Beguhl (spelling ?) from San Marcos HS. He later threw the dicus at Santa Barabra CC and then, either Washington, or Washington State
