I was a state finalist shot put and discus thrower in high school and I'm just getting started in this sport (I am 18 years old). I still love track & field, but I've decided to branch off into Scottish Athletics as well. I was wondering how I would go about finding the right stones. I live in the Mid-Atlantic/South and was wondering if anyone had any ideas where I could find good stones. Would they generally be found near large river beds or elsewhere?
Thanks all.

Try your local landscaping / patio paving company. They may have palettes of cultured stone that are the right shape. The one local to me let me take a luggage scale out to their yard and pick out a 16 and 22 pound stone that I liked for free because they are games sponsors. Even if you have to pay for them, it would be minimal because cultured stone is sold by weight.
Otherwise, you are correct. Go walk around in a creek but check your local rules and DNR restrictions before you take anything just in case there are impact or erosion restrictions.
Good luck,
Tom

As Tom said quickest and easiest is to go to stone supply/ landscaping center and look for River rock( you will be amazed at the amount of nice shaped 14 lb -15.99lb stone you will find/ these are fine for practice) otherwise it's just a waiting game...that creek bed you walk thru, that stone wall u see on a hike,etc..still looking for that perfect stone after 20 years
