I was practicing hammer Friday evening and heard a rip in my right bicep. It's not a complete rupture because the bicep is not up by my shoulder. Had x rays and no bone fragments. Diagnosis Is a distal bicep tear. I'll see a specialist on Monday. What kind of experiences have my fellow throwers had with recovery from this kind of injury? Just trying to stay positive & realistic.

Sorry to hear that. I had an injury last June while arm wrestling my  brachioradialis tried to tear away from my humerus and it still hurts sometimes.
I recently bought a "slingshot" to wear over it to apply some pressure while throwing.
Wish I could help more. Take it easy.

Tore my left bicep doing hammer July 2013.  Full distal tear.  Surgery 2 weeks later.  Be very aggressive with ortho RE: MRI and subsequent surgery.

My surgery was end of July 2013.  I was back in the gym 2 days after surgery though.  Began benching a month after.  "Officially" cleared October 2013.  Started throwing soon after.  Kept throwing until Dec 2013 until weather too bad here to throw.

Threw in Arnold 2014.  So that was 7 months post-op.  I won't lie, I was very tentative/babying the arm.  But it held up okay.  Didn't really start to crank on it, however, until April 2014 or so.  So maybe 9 months total.

I would say it took me a solid year before I ever thought about the arm.  Good luck; be smart.  You may be able to throw by the end of the season.  If you know Travis Gardner, talk to him.  He had surgery recently and just throw in North/South.

One other thing I did was throw off handed.  I even did a games off handed.  Not sure how much that helped, but it kept me sane.

In a galaxy far away and a long time ago I was an orthopedic surgical assistant long before I was a scientist.

It is almost impossible to say by email. Really depends on the individual injury and severity. You will get all the appropriate info when you see the specialist.

My comment regards post-operative care if you have surgery (or not). Follow the instructions of your specialist and physical therapist. If you do not follow their instructions you will risk re-injury and make it worse. Internet advice from gamers is nice, but rely on your health care providers.

It better to take extra time getting back into it as opposed to a re-injury which permanently ends your career.

Good luck and good recovery.

Thank you guys!   Needed some good feedback.   I know most importantly to give it time to heal whatever I did. I've been throwing competitively since 95, track & highland games and have had quite a few season ending injuries. I'm also a high school shop teacher and build implements and random items as a side job. Not having use of my right arm for a while is going to suck. I think whoever you are, and reading success stories on coming back from an injury relieves stress and keeps a positive outlook on your goals.

I had same injury and opted not to have surgery. My Sports medicine office partner gave me the option. I did P/T and rehab... the bicep scarred down and i have had no issues with it in 7 years or throwing and lifting

just saw your post. My right distal bicep was a complete rupture so surgery and 10 months was required for it. I have not had any issues with it. I had a partial tear in left distal tendon which may be what your dealing with. My ortho did a PRP injection to speed up the healing. This may be an option for you. I am not a Dr but have experience with this injury. I rested the left side for 3 weeks and still had pain and limited use. This is when Ortho suggested the PRP. I can't describe how bad the inj hurts but I was back throwing 6 weeks later and no issues since. May want to ask your Dr about it. Good luck and I hope you heal up and return to throwing.

It was a distal bicep rupture. Had surgery today we with the best elbow specialist in MT. I plan on taking it slow and listening to the Dr& PT. As I get to rehab I plan on calling you guys for advice. Brent, was it you or your brother that threw shot unattached indoors at SIUC back in the early 2000s? Doc. said 6 months and could be throwing again. Never saw this injury coming.

Good to hear the repair went smoothly. I tore my bicep in May 2008 with a repair a week later. Meticulously did the rehab. Starting using a safety squat bar to train legs and do Hise shrugs and good mornings a month after a surgery. Threw in 2 Highland Games that October.

Like others have said, do everything the OT says to get your mobility back in the forearm.

Remember long loose arms on the hammer. The movement from bent to straight at the point of release is what can cause the injury. Best of luck. I have a slightly misshapen left bicep for that very reason.

That was Brian Miller I believe. No relation but he was starting when we were ending. I last threw the shot in 1993. We did throw at SIU but it was a few years earlier. Glad the surgery went well. I would follow the PT's advice to the letter. I did and have not had any issues since. It was hard to wait but well worth it. Someone said they got a SSB and went to work. I did the same after bicep surgery and major shoulder surgery. I believe that was the best money I spent on any equipment. I wore it out and still do to this day. My ortho let me start using it 6 weeks post surgery and thats all I did for a few months. The following season was my best. Good luck and heal up.
