My name is Jon Hereth and I live out near Kansas City. I started throwing in March and competed in my first games in May at Highlands in the 'Burg, just finished my second at the KC Scottish games this past weekend and have absolutely been bitten by the throwing bug. I've kept a training log at kcstrongman.yuku.com as I have been competing in strongman the past couple of years but am probably going to try to transition to the highlands games for the most part. It will probably be more of a throwing log for a couple of months because I feel like I need to practice the events right now way more than I need train. I'd welcome any suggestions, criticisms or feedback as I am wanting to learn as much as possible about this sport.

Thanks for reading!!

Still a little sore form the KC games on Saturday.

LWFD x 10ish

Most were in the low 60s with the best being just over 65. Been having really hard time blocking my left side and always seem to fall out of the left side of the trig. It was suggested that I try to start out lower so I tried that and that seemed to help me stick my block a little better.

Beautiful outside..

Hammers - about 10ish of each

Been working on incorporating a 3rd turn into my throws. So far I have been throwing with 2 turns only.

Heavy- 3 turns didn't feel too terrible - most were around 77 with the best around 82
Light - This felt terrible - feel like I can't extend my arms or control the orbit when I add the third turn. Most were 94-95 with the best at 99.... disappointing.

Lots of work to do..

LWFD x 8ish - Was planning to do more but I strained/slightly tore my pec about 3 weeks ago and LWFD really seems to irritate it so shut it down early - best was 63' - not very pleased

6/23/14

Open stone - a really ugly 17# rock x10ish - most were about 36ish with 3 right over 38 which ties the furthest that I have thrown with this stone- I have been working on a glide - which I suck at - but am starting to get a little more comfortable with it

Light Hammer - x 15ish - still not extending very well and keeping my arms in too tight best was 99' - Made my pec sore

6/24/14
Had the opportunity to throw with McKim today as we live in the same town. What an amazing thrower and really an even better guy. Gave me tons to work on and is probably the mot humble guy I have ever met.

Open stone x 15ish -Dan pointed out that I am not getting my hips involved at all and after some tweaking threw my rock right at 40 about 4x and just over 41 once, huge PR.

LWFD - Little wary of this because of my pec so only threw about 5 but hit 66+ so was pretty happy with that.. 70 is not that far off I think.

Light Hammer x 10ish- Dan helped me a lot here, especially to not over analyze - nothing like getting coached by the world's best- can't believe how fortunate I am.. best of 102+

Really amazing to watch Dan throw and to get coached up by him - hugely grateful

After that went to the gym -
Deadlifts - beltless, straps
up to:
425 x 5 x 6 sets
Barbell hip thrusts
425 x 10 x 3 sets

Feel like death today from throwing and deadlifting yesterday.

Light Hammer x 20ish.. Most were mid 90s with my best being 101.. not terrible for me but need to work on staying slower and longer. Would like to get to where I can hit 110 consistently in practice..

Open Stone x 15ish
Took about 5 throws from the front working on 1,2 pivot best of 36
Took the rest with a glide and had 3 that were right a 41 which is a PR for me with my practice stone
HWFD x 10 - This felt blah most were 28-29, best was not quite 31
LWFD x 10 - Also felt blah.. most were 60, best was 63

Crazy hot and humid today but throwing is still my fav..

Got to throw hammers and wob with Dan again today and I don't know if the hammers just fear his presence or what but I had the best hammer day ever.. (it probably was the coaching..just maybe... thanks Dan!)
Light hammer x 5ish - all over 105 and two at 112 -huge pr
Heavy hammer x 10ish -most were over 80 and the best was right at 90 .. also a huge pr..
Wob x 10ish -worked allot on technique here and started feeling much more consistent.. Awesome day!

LWFD x 30ish...

This was the tale of 3 different throwing sessions.. first 10 were all about 58-62, second 10 were mostly 64-68 and last 10 were all 66+ with the best being 72 which is a PR ... apparently it takes me 20 throws to figure out what the heck I'm doing haha...

7/7/14

HWFD x 10ish - This sucked - I attribute this to taking 30 throws with LW yesterday.. grip felt awful, best of 27'

Light hammer x 10ish - good day here, most were 106-107 with the best 112 which is the furthest I've thrown with my homemade hammer..

Tired and sore today but the throws must go on..

Lwfd x 10ish ...most were mid 60s with the best at 71...not terrible..on the last two throws Dan and I decided to have a competition in which he spotted me 14ft... I still lost haha..

Open stone x10ish..most were 39ish, best was 41+ also not terrible.. hopefully some prs will fall on Saturday.

KC Backyard Games Write Up.

Was going into this day hoping to set a lot of PRs. The nice thing is this was going to be my third games so it shouldn't be that hard to PR. Beautiful, sunny day but hot.

Open Stone- Threw a kidney bean shaped 17# stone did not have a throw under 40 with the best at 43'8" - PR

Braemer - This was a massive 28# stone - best was 32'7.5" - technically not a PR but my current is 35 somthing with a 22lb stone so I''m pretty happy with that.

20# sheaf - This event has been a bit of a struggle for me, mainly cause I dont get to practice it much. Went in at 18' and ended up clearing 28' which crushed my old pr of 24'. Actually peaked early and hit the bar on the way down at 30' so it will be there soon

HWFD - This was up and down.. Think I went 30,33,scratch(the scratch was bad too, the weight totally threw me and I went crashing to the ground, hopefully nobody got video of this haha) but got extra throws since the 33 took first and on my first extra throw went 36'5.5" which was a huge PR for me. Very happy with this.

LWFD - Best throw was 68'9" which is a games PR. Still feel like I'm finishing without much block so it feels like there is a lot left in the tank - as a side note this had a ring handle which I'm totally not used to..

Caber - Same caber that I flipped at the KC games (barely) but could not get a flip on it today.. got the picks but was pulling way late - I haven't had a way to practice this but I need to make myself a caber so I can start practicing.

Light Hammer - best of 101' .5" - Technically a 2.5" PR but felt awful and I know I can do much better. Timing felt completely off and I am honestly disgusted with my performance here. Was feeling pretty fatigued by this point.

WOB - Cleared 12' and hit the bar at 13' but no dice - Not sure whats happening here other than clearly I was a tired, mental case. I cleared 14' and hit the bar 3x at 15' at my very first games in May, cleared 13 in June and now 12.. clearly I am going the wrong way haha.

Extra event - 100lb stone throw - 1 attempt. Pretty much every one tried this and I ended up winning with a throw of 11'6.5". Chad Ullom crushed it with a throw of over 13' but scratched out the front at the very last second.

All in all a hot, but great day!! Although the Light Hammer and WOB were especially dissappointing to me, I did end up with 5 PRs, 6 event 1sts, 1st in the 100lb stone throw and 1st place overall in the A class. It was a great group of guys to throw with as always and I really had a blast. Thank You to Melanie and Doug for putting on a great games. Thanks to Chuck Kasson who put on an exhibition and threw with the As and let me pester him with questions all afternoon and especially helped with my sheaf. And thanks to Dan McKim who has been gracious enought to let me keep throwing and learning from him and has helped me tremendously.

Great Day!

Movement Prep/Mobility
WFD and Stone footwork x 10ish each

OH press out of blocks
up to:
225 lbs x 5 strict press
275 lbs x 3 split pressish type thing < its what comes natural to me so I just roll with it haha
315 lbs x 2
Added belt
385lbs x 1
405lbs x 0
385 is a lifetime PR for me, but it went up so easily that I wanted to try 405 which is my year end goal. I missed it about 2 inches from lock out. I think I would have gotten it if I would jumped straight to it. 4+ will fall soon..

3 rounds of
Pendlay Rows 315lbsx 5
BW strap rows x 15

Band pull aparts/pressdowns/curls x 50 each

Sore today, especially my upper back and core..

Open stone -

1-2 pivot with no reverse x5ish - not a lot of pop but the positions are feeling more comfortable- best of 38

Full glide x 10ish- felt extremely slow but every single throw was between 39.5 and 40.5 so at least I was consistent and those aren't terrible practice throws for me.. Feeling more comfortable with my footwork and happy with the consistency.

Hammer winds x a lot

7/17/14

LWFD x 15ish - Slept about 4 hours last night so first 5 or so felt really slow and sloppy. Started to get in the groove after that and finish a little hard, avg'd about 66-67 with my best just over 70 ft. If I can ever learn to finish and block hard instead of falling out to my left I think that will help tons..

Press, jerk, whatever man. 4 bills over your head is so effing bad ass. I just had a Craig Smith moment and couldn't help but point out the difference.

You should be throwing BIG stones with pop like that. Get that technique down!

Throwing ....in a heat index of 115 degrees.. beautiful day...

Open stone:
1-2 pivot x 5
Glide x 10ish best was 40'

LWFD x 15 best was 67'

Light Hammer x 10 - best of 97'

All in all a very mediocre day of throwing. I'm sure the heat and lack of sleep I've been getting are playing into it but at least I got to get some footwork and motions in.. just like fishing.. a bad day of throwing is still better than a good day of almost everything else.

Open stone
1-2 pivot drill from the front x5ish- hit 39+ twice PR

Glide x 10ish - Not one under 41 and several right at 43, much more pop today and the best practice throwing sesh I've had to date

Power Snatches - First time snatching in about 8 mo

135 x 2
185 x 2
225 x 1
245 x 1 easy

2 hour throw sesh:

Sheaf x 15ish - Feeling better - Consistently hitting a 27' branch

LWFD x 15ish - avg mid 60s, best of 68. Footwork felt pretty good but felt super slow on the sprint

McKim showed up and we threw WOB and L Hammer

WOB x 10ish - First 5 felt like crap- Last 5 felt the best this event has felt after some coaching

Light Hammer x 5ish - Hammer broke so we didn't get as many throws here. Best of 100+. Poor showing here, can't keep my arms long for the life of me. Need to practice this much more.

205lb x 3
255lb x 1 PR
275lb x 1 PR
295lb x 1 Huge PR - Not sure where this came from but this flew up pretty fast.. granted I haven't snatched much at all and def have not snatched in the last 8 months so PRs are bound to happen. Still... I think throwing has really helped my explosiveness

Pendlay Rows

LWFD x 15ish.. Very inconsistent day. Had a lot of really bad and a PR haha. Got a new D-Handle from kilted athletics. Felt like heaven on my hand but on about half of my throws seemed to not be able to let go of it and would release late. I'm sure this will go away with time. That said about have of my throws were far to the left and low 60s and about the other half were 69+ with 3-4 being over 70 and the best being 74+ which is a PR.

Exhausted this day, 3 hrs of sleep the night before: decided to go train anyways.

Power cleans up to:
225lbs x 3
275lbs x 2
315lbs x 2
365lbs x 0,0,0
315lbs x 2

The 365 is there, think I was just too tired to catch it and stand up with it. Did some band pull aparts after this and went home and slept

7/31/14

Light hammer x 20ish - Still think the fatigue from the day before affected this. Worst hammer day I've had in a long time. Avg'd low mid 90s with the best being 98. Couldn't keep my arms long for the life of me and had no hip invovlement.

8/1/14

Open stone:
1,2 pivot from the front x 5ish - Best was 40' a PR from the front

Glide x 10ish- Not a single throw under 40, most were 42ish and the best was 44 which is a PR for me.

Good day, much better than the last two.

That's more like it, boss.

The hammer numbers make sense to me as you cleaned the day before so your pop was gone. Nothing to worry about man, progress!!

Light Hammer x 5ish - Finally felt like I was remembering my cues and felt a little better and then my hammer brok on the 5th throw. Best of 101.

Power Snatch
135 x 3
205 x 2
275 x 1
305 x 0,0 - First one I just barely missed, caught it, just lost my balance. This will fall soon

HWFD and H Hammer

HWFD x 15ish - Most consistent HW practice I've had yet. Most were around 29 and had 2-3 that were 30+. First time Ive broken 30 more than once in the same practice. Footwork felt pretty good but I'm still throwing off of my back leg and not hitting a very hard block. Once I can figure this out I feel like all of my throws will explode.

H Hammer x 15ish - Much more consistent here - Most were high 70s low 80s with the best being 84+. Same thing here. Need to get my hips more involved and keep my arms longer. Good day tho.

Stone and Sheaf

Standing no reverse x 5, best of 41. Furtherest I've thrown from the front
Glide x 15ish - two 41s, a 44 and the rest 42s and 43s. The 44 ties my PR and this is the most consistent my throws have been. You can see that my numbers are not that different with a glide than from the front. I feel like that is because I don't block very well when I glide. If I can figure out how to stick my left foot and block I feel like my throws will really jump.

Sheaf x 10ish. Hard to be objective since I dont have standards but def felt the most consistent to date:

Good day.

LWFD, Open stone

Lwfd x 15ish - first 5 were slow, avg low/mid 60s. Started to find my wheels after that and avg'd high 60s low 70s with two that were 73+. Most throws over 70 in a single practice ever.

Open stone
glide x 15ish - Most were 43+, couple were 44+ and a random outlier at 46. Huge practice PR. Great day here

Power clean/Jerk
225 x 2

Topeka Classic Highlands Games Write-up

Day started cloudy and unbelievably cool for KS in August. I think I was the only A that ended up showing up so I threw with the B class and had a great time.

Braemer 22lbs - 37'7" PR - Pretty happy with this.. would love to hit 40 soon

Open Stone - 42'10" - fouled a 43-44 and it was a heavy ugly stone but still not where I want to be with the open.

WOB - won at 13' so I tried to PR at 14'6" and hit the bar but no dice.. It will be there soon

HWFD- 33+. Not a PR but every throw was 33 so def the most consistent here

LWFD- 70'6" PR - It has been there in practice so it was nice to break 70 in a games. I think with the right implement, a good day, a little tail wind and some luck that mid to high 70s will be in the cards soon

Heavy Hammer - 83'3" PR - Still not where I need to be. Timing feels off and my release is terrible. Oh well just need to practice more.

Light Hammer - 101'7" PR - see above

Caber - Fairly big stick 17+ ft and almost no taper. Hit 85 degrees 2x. This is def my worst event. Haven't been able to practice it at all ouside of games. Need to build myself one.

Sheaf - 24' - Super loose bag, but still kind of frustrated I only hit 24 after hitting 28 in my last games. This was our last event so I took a cpl more pulls afterwards and cleared 26' so that made me feel a little better.

All in all a good day with a cpl of PRs. Still not where I would like to be but I am making progress. Thanks to Darrin Plank for running a great event!

Awesome throwing man! The numbers will rise. They are already way higher than earlier in the year. No worries.

Haha, thanks Jeff. I have 5 more games between now and mid October so hopefully my technique issues will continue to resolve themselves.... As for the clean and jerk, the jerk isn't too bad.. but I'd def consider the clean a "power split flailing clean" haha...I appreciate the feed back sir!.

Open Stone, LWFD and Light Hammer

Open Stone 17#
Front the front x 8 best of 42' -
Glide x 10 avg of 42, best of 44'
Feel like I am hitting my positions from the front pretty well but feel like I can't hit the same positions when I try to glide.

LWFD x 10ish best of 68'
Not a bad day here, not a great day. Felt slow and still cannot hit a good block for the life of me. Every throw felt off of my back leg

Light Hammer x 10ish best of 100+

I hate the hammers haha. One day I feel like my winds are awesome and I can't release it well, other days I feel like my release is great and I wind like a t-rex. Oh well, practice practice

Lucas Highland Games Write-Up

Drove out to Lucas, KS Friday night as it was about 4 hours from KC. Breakfast was at 8 and the games started around 10. It was HOT.. think the high of the day was 105 degrees. I was the only A so I was guaranteed a win and I threw with the C's to help judge and coach.

WOB - best throw was 14'1" - one inch PR!! Set it to 14'1" so I could try to PR and got it haha. Set the bar to 15' after that and had the height, just couldn't get it over. It will happen soon.

Heavy Hammer - best of 81'7"- not a terrible throw for me and only about 20" off of my PR but this still needs a lot of work.

Light Hammer- best of 101'7" - again only a few inches off of my games PR but still doesn't feel good. After watching the video I can see how short my arms get when the weight is behind and I will be working on correcting that.

Braemer - 23lb stone - 36'11" - Pretty happy with this - 8" off of my PR with a heavier uglier stone. Still not opening up my chest very well.

Open stone - 44'10.5" - PR. I have been wanting to break 45' in a games so bad I I throw 44'10-44'10.5"...3x haha.. Same with the braemer, when I can get my chest to open I think that my numbers will take a signifigant jump.

HWFD - best of 32'6" - Threw 32 consistently. Think I'm dragging the weight through my second spin which is causing me to throw off of my back foot and lose a lot of power.

LWFD - best of 69'3" - not a bad throw but my hand was hurting and I was pretty hot and tired by this point. Form felt and looked pretty good, drifted to the left a little but hoping with a little more speed some bigger numbers are on there way.

Caber- Finally got some consistent flips. Still pulling way too late. Think the second caber was 17' 105lbs and got an 11. Once I can get some more reps I think I will really like this event.

Sheaf- 24', hit the bar at 26' 3x - Just no juice left.

Overall good day, especailly with the heat. Hit two PRs and threw the rest of the events other than sheaf and HWFD within a cpl of inches of my games PRs.

Biggest take aways after watching the video are that I need to keep my arms long when the hammer is behind me and get more extension, open my chest with the stones and not drag the weight with HWFD. Video is posted below and I welcome critique and suggestions. Need to get better.

Buffalo in two weeks!!

Awesome Ryan!!

8/26/14

Light Hammer and Open Stone

Light Hammer x 15ish - Really worked on extending my arms when the weight was behind me and while I'm not comfortable with it quite yet, it made a drastic difference in the distances I hit. Avg'd low 100s with one at 109 and one at 107+. Still lots to work on here but feel like I can progress

Open stone - Not a bad day, really working on keeping my chest open and punching and avoiding letting my left shoulder drop and falling through my left side
Braemer stance x 8ish - best of 42'
Glide x 10ish - avg 43, best of 45' - more in the tank, just need to hip my positions better and faster.

Hot!! But good day! Excited for Buffalo

Light Hammer, HWFD, LWFD

Light Hammer x 15ish - Really working on keeping my arms extended and while it is still different and uncomfortable, avg'd 105-106ft and had a 109 and 112! Best Hammer day I've had yet!

HWFD x10ish - Working on casting the weight in front of me more do I am not dragging the weight but pushing it. Best couple at 29+ - Not a lot of juice here but the motions felt better

LWFD x 10ish - Working on just increasing my speed here but was pretty spent by this point, Best of 68+

Good Day

Buffalo Highland Games write up.

Drove down about 2.5 hours that morning. It was pouring but stopped about 930 and we got started at 10.

Braemer- Pretty nice 22lb rock. 38+ which was a PR. Feeling better here. Still take my R leg of the ground too early and feel like I lose some potential force transfer.

Open - Another nice 16lb. Went 44+ and was a few inchs short of a PR. Felt like I should have PRd this but just wasn't in the cards.

HWFD - Best was 35+ on my last extra. Think I need to start taking more warmups, it always feels like it takes me a couple of throws to get my technique dialed in. Only the second time I've thrown over 35 this season though so nothing to complain about

LWFD - Best of 68+ Just felt slow. Need to work on waiting and sinking more in my first turn.

H Hammer - Best of 85+. PR. Fouled an 86. Need to get this over 90.

L Hammer - Best of 106+ PR. Would like to get this up around 115, just feels like I have such a small timing window which I always seem to miss haha.

WOB - Every one went out at 13' so I jumped to 14'6" for a PR and just couldn't make it happen. Hit the bar a couple of times and had one that I left out front that I was told went almost a foot above the bar. Strength is there I just need to make it happen.

Sheaf - First time throwing a 16lb sheaf. Felt really good. Only missed one throw till I maxed out the standards at 30 foot. Was told that my last throw was a good 2-3 feet over the 30' bar. Now if I could only get my 20lb sheaf to 30ft haha.

Caber- Was 16' and 107lbs... before being soaked by the rain the previous night and that morning. It was heavy and slick. Nobody turned it. Couple ppl managed a few 75 degrees including myself but def pretty tough. Still need to get better at this. Def my worst event due to the lack of practice.

All in all a great day and probably the most complete competition I've had yet. Big thanks to Jamie Channel for putting the games on. Love the opportunities to get out and throw. Hopefully I can make some improvements and be ready for Tulsa in 2 weeks.

Light Hammer and Stone

Some winds with the hammer and then it broke on my first throw.. oh well... winds felt better anyways haha. Probably would have thrown 120 today(not) haha

Stone 16#
Braemer stance x 8ish - all over 40 and the best at 43 - working on keeping my right foot on the ground longer so I can apply force longer
Glide x 10ish - first couple were around 43-44, finished with some 45s and 2 at 46+ - worked on getting my left foot down quicker. Pretty encouraged with this as this is one of the best days with the stone that I've had and my foot work felt all over the place. Once I can get this footwork ironed out hopefully some bigger numbers will be on there way.

Good day

70kg x 3
100kg x 3
110kg x 2
130kg x 1
140kg x 0,0,0 Just barely missed these. Not terribly dissapointed as I threw earlier in the day but still.. sooo close

Ring pullups x 5
Pendlay rows x 5 140kg

9/10/14

Light Hammer x 20ish

Avg'd 100-105 with my best at 109. While that is not a bad day for me I felt pretty encouraged because I was pretty fatigued from throwing/training yesterday and I felt while I didn't have much pop, I was able to feel the correct positions better. Had one throw that hit 106 that I hit the ground on my last wind. That would have probably been a PR. Oh well. Good day!!

LWFD x 15ish
One of the better days I've had with LWFD. Not a single throw under 65 with most at 68-69, 4 over 70 and a PR at 74!! Really worked on driving towards the trig and getting a good final pull. Hopefully it will translate to big throws at tulsa!

Good Day.

Light Hammer, HWFD, Sheaf

Light Hammer x 15ish - Feeling better, still not where I need it to be but more consistent. Avg'd about 104-105 with the top two at 108. Seems like I either apply force well and shorten my arms or lengthen my arms and can't apply force. Need to make that happen haha.

HWFD x 10ish - Best HWFD day I've ever had. Not a single throw under 33, several around 34-35 and the best at 36'9". I've never hit 35 before in practice so I was really encouraged here.

Sheaf x 10. I don't have standards so no real objective way to measure this. But it felt good and the hang time was awesome haha. Thats what counts right?

Awesome day!

Braemer reverse x 4 - best of 44
Glide x 10 - one at 43, three at 45, one at 46 and the rest at 44. Pretty happy with this

Light hammer x 8ish - Best was 105, hammer broke on that throw.. Still need to get better here.

Good day, excited for Tulsa

Tulsa Scotfest

Beautiful morning, rained a little bit on the drive in but had stopped and was cool and misty. I think there were 8 of us in the A class and it was a pretty experienced, strong field.

Braemer - This was a nice stone. Was told this and the open stone have been weighed on a couple postal stones just at 22lbs and 16lbs. Hit 39'4" on extras. Huge PR -1st

Open - Another nice stone, it was so small and dense I almost had a hard time figuring out how to tuck it. Hit 45'1" for a small PR and the win. 1st

HWFD - First throw was 31'5". Then two fouls. Fouled a 34', which while not even close to my PR would come back to haunt me later. Just couldn't put this together today. 3rd

LWFD - 68'4.5" - Good weight, kept landing too blocked off and throwing off of my back foot. 1st

H Hammer- Best H hammer series I've had to date. Not a throw under 84 and a PR at 86'2". 1st

L Hammer- Another good series and another PR at 109'4.5". 1st

Lunch - And that is when things started going downhill for me.

Caber - Failed to flip the qualifier - Got some great picks just could not get the thing turned. I suck at this and need to get better. Just couldn't figure out my timing. Last - ish or how ever the score the qualifying caber.

WOB - Another suck fest. Went in at 11.. missed. Then made it, made 12, missed at 13, made 13. Went out at 14 along with everyone else. Took third due to misses. The inconsistency killed me.

Sheaf - Another inconsistent showing. This event has actually been better for me lately and I'm not really sure what happened. Cleared 22' and then went out at 24'. Horrible. Had plenty of height, just off with my aim and trajectory. This put me in 5th for this event.

Overall the top 3 spots were decided by 1 point and I came in 2nd by .5 point, which is probably better than I deserved considering the afternoon I had. Got to throw with a great group of guys and learned a lot. Congrats to Gary Robertson on the win. Congrats need to also go to Jeremy Irvin, who took 5th in the A class AFTER taking 3rd at 190 nationals the day before.. this guy is incredible to watch. Big thanks to Matt Thompson for putting on a great games and to our judge. Now it is time to get my mind right for McPherson next week.

Mcpherson Write-up

Beautful day, beautiful venue.
Opened the day of with WFD

HWFD - 32'11" - Still under where I've been. I've been landing too blocked off and have been throwing off of my back foot as a result
LWFD - 68'2" - This felt pretty good just need to increase speed.
Braemer - 35'6" - Not a bad rock but no real good handle.
WOB - 13'6" - Still inconsistent and jerking the weight at the bottom. This will need alot of work during the off season.
Open stone - 44'10" - Nice stone, think 44-45 is about my threshhold until my foot work improves. My glide feels soo slow and not smooth. If I can speed it up and smooth it out I think 50s are in the cards for sure.
Caber - Flipped the qual and then got a best of 80 degrees on the scoring caber. Did pick up some things that will hopefully improve me here though.
Heavy Hammer - 87'5" PR - This felt pretty good and once I can get longer and more relaxed that will really improve my numbers here I think.
Light Hammer - 104'6" See above.
Sheaf - 26' with 20# bag. It was a brand new bag and everyone hated how tight it was except for me. I like it haha. Hit the bar at 28' 2x which would have tied my PR.

All in all, only one PR but I was consistent enough to sneak away with the win in a tough A class. The highlight of the day was getting to meet and talk with Francis Brebner. What an honor. Thank you to Dave Glascow for running one of the best games I've been to in my short career. Springfield in two weeks.

Rob - I was sore for a straight week
Moosie - 250 is nothing to be ashamed of..with consistency 300 will fall soon and before you know it that turns into 400, 500 etc.

It has been a week.. Drove with my kids 20hrs to a family reuion - Got a nasty nasty 24hr virus, sickest I've ever been in my adult life. Lost almost 25lbs. Drove 20 hours back. 4 days later after drinking water, pedialite and gatorade by the gallons and trying toe eat as much as I can I'm still 15lbs down. Was supposed to compete in Springfield this weekend but I'm calling the dogs on that one. Going to try to get my weight back up and have a good season finale at Celtober.

Open stone
Braemer x 8ish - best of 41 - not terrible
Glide x10ish - also best of 41 - this is terrible, felt slow, unexplosive and choppy.

LWFD x 15ish - best of 64 - Same, slow unexplosive with no good pull at the end.

Side note: I wore my old track spikes instead of my cleats today. Feet felt much lighter and quicker even in the soft ground.

Light hammer day -

x25ish - Hammer has really been frustrating me. I've been really inconsistent and feel like I should be throwing further. Really worked on making some major changes, tried to steepen my orbit, keep my weight forward on my toes and stay long, loose and slow. First 5 throws or so sucked - 94-101. Then it's like I remembered to stay long and loose. Most throws were between 107 and 110 from there on out with one at 112 which tied my practice PR and then the unicorn throw happened. I stayed long and loose, kept by balance and finished well.
119'10"... Huge PR. Was super stoked. Probably won't happen for a while again but at least i know it is in there.

Hopefully some of this transfers over to celtober.. getting there..

As a side note I discovered chipotle has a secret menu yesterday .. and ate the quesoritto - burrito wrapped in a quesodilla.. quesoritto? PR? coincidence? I think not..

I am def not the one to watch video of. I do know as you increase the speed the of your revolutions, you should go into more ext and your head should be back and up. I do not do this very well.. I would watch videos of dan mckim, jake sullivan, matt v. etc.

Celtober/ Season Write up

Sunday I competed at Celtober at my 9th/final games of the season. I can't say enough on what a great job TCAA did putting on these games and how well they took care of the athletes. Thank You!!

Braemer - 35+ Heavy Stone, good for 2nd. Hayden gave me a few tips here that really helped.
Open Stone - 44+ Not a bad throw for me, still feel like there is a huge disconnect between my legs and my throw and I feel like I get almost nothing out of my glide. Will be working on this extensively during the off season.
HWFD - 34 on the dot. Landed extremely closed off and kept throwing almost entirely off of my back foot. I think some line drill and really working on sprinting towards the trig will help that.
LWFD - 68+ Pretty consistent with what I've thrown the past couple of games. Need to get faster...

and stronger..

and more powerful. Or just get a hulk shirt.
Heavy Hammer - 81+ Just couldn't get my footing and kept choking my arms. Hammers killed me today.
Light Hammer 100+ See above.
Caber - 70 degrees. Had 3 good picks but couldn't get the timing of the pull down. Will be getting a caber to practice on this off season.
Sheaf - 23' Need to be more consistent. Not sure what was wrong other than it just wasn't there.
WOB - 14' Had a cpl good pulls at 15' Mike Dickens gave me some cues that I think will help with my consistency. I think that once I can figure out the technique, the power is there.

Once again it was a great games. It was great to see and compete with old faces and meet new ones. Watching Duncan, Hayden and Kevin battle it out was was inspiring and really showed me how far I need to come before I get to that level.

As far as the season goes, here are what my goals were at the beginning of the season - PRs in parenthesis

Braemer- 38' (39')
Open Stone - 45' (45'1")
HWFD - 35' (36'5.5")
LWFD - 70' (70'6")
H. Hammer - 90' (87'5")
L. Hammer - 120'(109' 4.5")
Caber - Turn a 12 ( I did it - once haha)
Sheaf - 28' (28' with a 20lb bag)
WOB - 15' (14'1")
I wanted to try to be ranked in the top 25 by the season's end and as of today im the 25th.

As you can see I met some goals and didn't meet others. Still need to get get my technique more consistent, get stronger, more explosive etc etc. All in all, since picking up my first implement in April and competing in my first games in May, I have had so much fun and have become absolutely hooked. At every games I have been to the people have been exceptionaly friendly, the athletes extraordinarily helpful, and have been overall awesome experiences. I can't say enough about the quality of the highland games community and as much as I love competing, I must admit that that draws me to the sport more than the throwing itself.

I need to throw out thank yous to every one has been involved with the games I have competed in from the ADs, judges, athletes, shaggers and everyone else who works so hard to put these on for us. Special thanks go to Dan McKim, Chad Ullom, Dave Glasgow for all of your encouragement and help and coaching and to Duncan for putting up with all of my pestering emails in the beginning of the season.

Looking forward to taking some time off from throwing(at least 2 weeks haha) and trying to get as strong and fast as possible from now until the beginning of the 2015 season. Can't wait to see what that brings.
