Need some advise.  I am 57 years old and in good shape (other then some aches and pains). I have  been interested in strength training and track & field throwing events for many years.  I am interested in throwing as a master in Highland Games competition.  Since this is all new to me I thought I would start out with the stone throws.  Currently my strength work follows a program based on the "big 4" with some modifications (bench, press, squat, deadlift).  Just wondering . Am I crazy or is this something that is possible at this age.  Any suggestions would be helpful.

You are not crazy at all! 57 is not old at all: I'm that old and you can see on the results data base that there are many masters older than you. Anything is possible at any age unless you are dead, unconscious, or physically tied to a bed by a physician.

Given your user-id, I'll presume you're male. Therefore I'll defer to the other knowledgeable men on the board to suggest any tweaks to your strength program. If you've been doing T/F throwing events, you have a good foundation since stones are like shot put and weight for distance is similar to discus (just with a long, heavy weight at the end of a chain vs a discus). Hammer is a fixed foot throw (see various YouTube video). Sheaf, WOB, and caber are the ones that have no real counterpart in T/F throwing. Many examples of all are on YouTube.

We look forward to seeing you at a games in the future!

I'm 63, been in master strength sports since 35! I've place
3rd in track at the nationals, 2nd in strongman and 1st in
powerlifting. I'm now eyeing up highland games. I lift 7 days
per week, 3 upper body, 2 lower and 2 strongman events and throw-
ing. I'm not quitting until I can't do anything or dead! Just
put your mind to it,and don't listen to anyone but you!!!!

For training purposes, you can start with the stones and add in the rest over time, if that's your preference. But in games, you throw every event (usually 7 - 9 events).

And no, you're not crazy.
