I have a question about the deadlift. Are most of you only focusing on the pull and doing basically nothing but dropping the weight or do you put some focus on lowering the weight to work that part of the lift too? I get it when going heavy, max lifting for singles, one probably wouldn't want to lower that much weight but how about when doing submaximal training? Do you put focus on lowering the weight with control to work the eccentric contraction? I train at home in the garage at 430am. If I drop the weight I wake up my son, so it's conducive to my training that I control it. haha.. indirectly answers the question

For me, (exceptions for cleans and their variations which I don't do due to pas injuries) I consider the lowering of the weight the 2nd half of the lift. I feel this is especially important if you don't want or unable to push a big weight. The competition deadlift is comprised of lifting the bar to lockout and getting the down command. For white lights, one only needs to lower the bar under control. There is no eccentric component to the deadlift and I never control it down. In a meet, I will follow it down. In training, I drop it. I cannot see the point from a strength perspective at all. Holding on and most times getting another. I'm a grinder, so if I can do one, I can do two. I like to have the bar know I am in control and dominating it. I will let it go when I feel like it and am done.

Lift maximums threes controlled back to ground simple.. Warm up 3 sets then 6 working sets of 2/3 reps heavy.. In no time you will hit 600+ |

man.... I didn't know it was so easy to hit 600. I must have been doing something wrong on my quest to 6.

John, I lower the bar to the floor and sometimes I will hold it in place above the floor for a 3 count. The hip flexors and hamstrings get work they do not on the pull upward as you quickly transition through those positions. I do this with a weight of up to 95% of what I can max but if I am pulling a max that is not very applicable or even safe. At the end of a set with about 85% to 90% of max is really ideal for me. That was something I used to do when I was an Olympic lifter and we called them "Halted deadlifts". Bill Starr showed me that technique. I have shown it to others like Mike Z and Wayne Hill. I drop the last one. So if I'm doing 3 I drop the third, singles, I drop the first. Just because I bought a set of bumper plates and made a platform out of some roofing plywood and a farming stall matt ...and if i took the time and money to get that stuff, I'm gonna use it. ------------- Andrew G Vada a bordo CAZZO!!!! |
