First Log. Here we go!

Age: 40

Height / Weight:  6'2"/230

Weightlifting experience: Started lifting about a year ago. Just messing around really until this winter I started the Texas cycle workout. Now I am on Matt Vincent's preseason Speed Power workout.

Highland Games experience:  I started shortly after my wife. She trained for the Midwest Championship in Columbus, IN for about 6 weeks in 2012 and I kinda played around throwing with her. After that competition I decided to do the Indianapolis Games last October and took 4th in the C class. Most important I fell in love with the sport and the people. Now I'm hooked.

Advantages:  So far I would say dedication is my big advantage. Sure not strength. LOL

Challenges If I can get my lower back to stop locking up every day that would be great.

Competition goals:  Win a C class! Beat my 16 year old son that took third in Indy.

Get good enough to join a Masters class.

Current programming:

Lifting – Just finished 6 weeks of the Texas cycle and had great gains. Then switched to Matt's preseason speed/power. Just finished the first week of that.

1RM

dead lift 365

Bench 230

squat 260 (probably could do more if my back wouldn't spaz out on me)

power clean 170

OH press 165

Supplements – I strive for 200 grams of protein a day, BCAA, Glutamine, Gama and a good Multivitamin

Throwing – I throw as much as I can. I have my own implements and standards at my house so it's a little easier. As long as the weather cooperates.

Stole this format from Tom.

I hope he doesn't mind.

Saturday it was a cold high of 21 degrees so I didn't do much.

Sunday we went to a local state park to make some dents in the field.

28# WFD x 8

16# hammer x 5

22# hammer x 10

110 # practice caber 3 picks 3 turns

We were throwing from a parking lot against a curb so it felt kinda weird
and we were throwing up hill so no PR's

When I say we I am usually talking about my wife and my 16 year old son. We throw together most of the time.

I put a lot of time in working with my wife on her double spin in wfd.
It will take her a bit to get it but she will definitely bust her 2012 PR's when she does.

Don't worry bout being "good enough" to get into a Master's Class; the prerequisite for this Class is age, not ability. If you're 40+, go for it.

Unsolicited advice:

You aren't going to learn much of anything in the C class. Not disparaging those fellas or anything, but the C class is generally populated with folks who either just started and therefore have relatively unrefined technique, or by people who have been in for awhile and/or don't train all that hard and never got better.

Again, this is not Duncan RAINING on the C class. I mean no disrespect to any of them, or to you.

If I've interpreted your previous posts correctly, I think you want to improve; one of the best ways to do this is to throw your hat in the ring with folks much better than yourself (not marginally or occasionally so) and learn what they have to teach. If improving your throws is truly what you're after, you should, in theory, be hell bent for leather to get out of the C class and into the deeper water.

If what you really want to do is win medals or "win your class," I can think of no better way than stepping back from the challenge of stiffer competition.

Thanks for the encouragement.
I definitely do want to get better and I do plan on entering in to masters this season. Right now I have 2 things holding me back:
I am competing with my son who is 16. He is still C class and I want to throw with him to push him and be by his side till he gets some friends and is comfortable competing without me. I am pretty sure he will move up to B class very soon at that time I want to move to masters. I will be getting close to B class distances on my throws as well and I don't want to move to B class.
(56 pounder ugh)
Also I'm not real outgoing so I'm A little afraid I won't fit in very well with the masters.
(not because of anything I have seen or heard, it's just me)

As you mentioned there are great benefits to throwing with the masters. Mainly the knowledge I can soak up. Also it will be great on 2 day events where I can compete on Saturday and cheer for my wife on Sunday.

In no way am I a metal seeker unless it's the top metal. My opinion is 1st in a C class is the best of the worst. That would be ok but that's not my goal.
I competed In my first games last year with 2 brothers that supposedly were competing for there first time. I found out later (after they took 1st and 2nd place) that it was there first year but they had competed at 2 other games and took 1st and 2nd then as well. They should have entered B class but they seeking the metals. That will never be me.

Wednesday:
Had trees cut so I could grow some grass where I throw this summer instead of throwing in the mud. Didn't do much else.

Thursday and Friday: not much. I felt a little fatigued for some reason.
Helped my wife train a friend that wants to throw at Shamrock games with us.

Saturday: went camping Threw some stone in the State park camp ground. (there were only 2 campers so we didn't disturb anyone)
I ended up coaching my wife mostly.
I threw open stone 5 times Braemar style and worked on my glide a little.
Kicking my left leg is a problem. I can't get any snap in it.

Sunday: threw LWFD about 10 times but not very good cause I was so stiff from sleeping in the camper I think. I also threw light hammer about 4 times but just wasn't feeling it.

Sunday eve: Worked on WOB with wife.
I threw her 28# about 12 times in between her throws.
When she was done I threw the 56# 8 times

Thursday:
Rainy, snowy and cold
Threw LWFD 5 1 turn
                    10 full throws
was sucking pretty bad. I am blaming it on the weather
worked on open stone a little.

I think playing with the 400 pounds yesterday was a bad idea. I was really stiff today.

I am thinking, tomorrow off and throw hammer and caber Saturday.
Then off to the Arnold on Sunday.

Saturday: Threw light hammer 20 times felt pretty good. I really have to focus on keeping it slow until the last turn then pull hard. If not it gets going too fast and I cant keep up with it so my low point of my orbit gets too far left. Had some pretty good throws and set a PR
Sunday: got up and drove 5 hours to the Arnold Classic. Watched the events and drove 5 hours home. GREAT Experience!
Threw LWFD about 10 times when I got home. I was very stiff from riding in the car.
Monday: I had a full day of crap to do so no training.

Be patient with the yoga.  Don't make achieving the pose the goal.  Use the pose to teach yourself something about your body and you'll be okay.  Remember to breathe.  It's easy to forget that when you're in a weird position.

Good luck,

Tom

Dude this post makes me sad.

You will be just fine. I have never thrown in any class anywhere where I felt unwelcome or like I didn't fit in, and I am as big a misfit as any fu**er on this board.

Masters, in particular, is more about the people and the experience than the numbers- that is my opinion. Of course it's taken seriously and people ant to do well but if you read what people post about it, numbers are by no means the be-all and end-all.

Show up. Attitude is everything, not strength. You'll be just fine I promise. I'd bet what's left of my career on it and that's no small thing cause I cherish every time I get to hit the field.

Also, Duncan's advice is GOLD. I highly endorse it.

Thursday:
Throwing: Sheaf 5@16' (warm-ups) 1@20, 1@21, 1@22, 1@23 fail, 1@23 made, 1@24, 1@25 PR
quit on a good note.

Tom, yoga is tough but I think it will be a great asset to loosen me up and improve my balance.
breathing is the hard part some poses are very tough and panting is common for me.

Jeff, Thanks I'll be in masters before you know it and you guys will be trying to figure out a way to get rid of me LOL

Sean, You won't be making fun of me cause I won't be there. I'll be in master pointing and laughing with you.

Friday:
Throwing:
LWFD 5 no spin
          5 1 spin
          5 full throws
I don't know why but 3 weeks ago I set a pr with a double spin and now I am off balance about to face plant and I can throw better with a single spin. Ugh 15 days to my first comp of the year and I am sucking at this.

WOB 1st time with the 42#er
         1 @ 12 made, 3 @ 13 missed 1 @ 13 made, 5 at 14 missed. I was sooooo close but I got pretty burned up so I had to stop.

Great weather forecast for the weekend so Throw! Throw! Throw!

Oh I forgot I did a whole session of yoga on Friday. 30 minutes without passing out. Clap

Saturday:
1.5 hours of foot work with the wife. Working on spinning and maintaining balance. Also some Ostone glide drills.
WOB 42# 5 throws finally got my 14# pr that I tried to get Friday.
Caber 14' x 105 practice caber  6 turns 2 non-turns didn't get a 12:00 but that's ok cause last year I couldn't even turn it.
WOB again! Why? IDK maybe cause I have a certain field record in my sights. Threw that stupid thing about 10 times a 14'6" and never got it.
Oh well when I can move my shoulder again I will try some more.

Sunday:
WOB 5 throws with the 42# and 5 with the 56# at 10 feet working on bending the knees farther.
H hammer 5 full throws
L hammer 5 full throws
LWFD 3 single turn, 5 full throws. I think I do better thinking about keeping the first spin a little slower. It seems like I have more control.
Threw sheaf a couple times but broke the rope in the standards at the gym so I have to fix them tomorrow and try again.

Took Monday off'

Tuesday:
Open stone 3 toe to trig
                   3 braemar style
                   3 glide
42# WFD    6 full throws
28# WFD    3 1 turn throws
                   5 2 turn full throws
sheaf 16#  4 warm ups
                  5 full throws
WOB   42# 4 warm up throws
           56# 4 full throws     PR

Trying to get an Idea where I stand for competition at Shammies. frustrated a bit with OStone I throw farther braemar style so that is how I will throw at the shammies. Same with LWFD my 2 turn is about to drive me crazy. If I can't get it right I will throw 1 turn at shammies.
I was hoping to have more stuff ironed out before competition but I am quickly running out of time

I haven't posted in a while. What have I been doing? THROWING!
Wed: WOB and LWFD countless times
Thursday: off day. i helped my wife train her friend that is coming to the Shammies with us.
Friday: Cold but we were out in it. I was mainly helping my wife and I threw a little.
Saturday: LWFD I don't know probably 30 throws
Sheaf 18' made 19' made 21' made 23' made 25' miss, miss, made 26' made on my 5th try.            Hey that's a PR!
Ostone 5 toes to trig, 5 full throws  PR in that too
                 LWFD again DUMB DUMB DUMB
Weight slipped out of my hand on the second spin. Would have been a PR instead I face planted and caught myself on my right hand now i can't move my wrist.
I have to compete in 6 days.
Lord heel me quick!

Good thing is I suck so bad I don't put any serious force on my arm. No, really I knew better. I was getting tired and I think that's what made me fall.

Ok third day after my fall my wrist still hurts but I thought i would throw a little to test it out.
I started with the wifes LW and threw it.
no turn 3 times
1 turn   3 times
2 turns 3 times
only using about 60-70% and it felt pretty good so i grabbed up my LW
no turn 3 times
1 turn  3 times
2 turns 3 times @ 60%
2 turns 2 times @ 90%
Wrist is a little sore tonight but not bad.
I think with some tape I will be ok on Saturday.
I worry a little about HWFD, WOB cause I will be throwing the 56# and the braemar cause I can't bend my wrist back as far as I need.

So Ancient Athletics doesn't have it on the NASGA database yet but here is how C class went down at the Shammies (first comp 2013)
As you can see it was real close.
I tied my son for 2nd at WOB
then I took first in sheaf, Hvy hammer, and caber.
these were all game PR's for me and the biggest caber I have ever turned 105# 14'8" I think. I turned a 11:00 on my second try then one of the other guys turned a 11:30 so I had to get a 12:00 on my last try and some how did.
Then things went down hill as we started in to my worst events stones and WFD. Somehow I still pulled out a first place win.
I feel kinda bad for my son cause he didn't place. Talk about close .5 point between 2nd 3rd and 4th
So as promised on to masters.
I will be in reynoldsburg OH in 2 weeks then back to IL for the May games in 6 weeks.
I also want to mention that my wife won 1st in the women's class this is her 3rd 1st place finish in a row. I am so proud of her and my son. I couldn't think of anyone I would rather be doing this with.

Tom,
Next would have to be win a masters class games of course. It's not going to be easy I will have to get a lot stronger and practice practice practice.

My son has beat me once and I beat him once so guess what? Tie breaker! In May I will join B class with him and have a showdown.

Threw a little wfd last night and realized how stiff I have gotten so I need to get back in the gym and work on some yoga

Friday:
Gym: tons of box jumps. seated, jumping off one onto another, springing off right leg landing on box with left and jumping over. (working on transforming my body into a Tigger)
Medicine ball work, jumping and throwing and springing off the right leg and throwing.
Kettle bell work. kinda like swing but more like a snatch up to the chin and jump at the top.
I really need to learn the names of these so I don't sound ignorant.
Sunday:
eat candy.
Gym: strict OH press 65 x 7
                                      75 x 7
                                      85 x 7
Kroc rows 3 x 70 x 10 each arm
hammer curls 30# x 10
                      35# x 10
                      40# x 10
                      each arm

My question is always this: What do you do to warm your body up before you throw? If it's "grab an implement", you need to adjust a little :)

Posted By: wsciscoe

Sean, I usually warm up on the treadmill or bike and some stretches and jumps to get my old hips moving. Ok fine sometimes I just grab and throw.
I think I was so stiff this week cause we competed on Saturday and didn't do squat for a couple days. Next week after we compete in Reynoldsburg I will definatly do some active recovery.

BTW what is the best way to warm up before games (no treadmill or bike)

Sunday night: light hammer 3 warm up throws and 5 full throws
Monday: WOB 42# 3 @ 12, 2 @ 13, 2 @14

Glenn,

I have noticed warm-ups vary among competitors. Some guys will foam roll, others do some sort of stretching, dynamic warm-ups, or stretch bands, while others do nothing at all.

Find what works best for you and make it your routine at each comp.

BTW, my warm-up in the gym or practice usually involves walking to the field or loading 45's on the bar. I probably should do something more but I get lazy.

Thanks Sean. I definitely need a foam roller I hear they are great.
Good job at the Tartan day games in Ohio. Sorry my son broke the black widow.

Reynoldsburg Tartan days (first time in masters)
I had the opportunity to throw with some great guys that treated me and my family wonderfully.

Braemar stone 22# I always feel nervous and a little stiff but was able to pull out 3rd and a PR Smile
The stone was real slick so I was surprised I did so well.

Open stone               Great stone that flew pretty well for me another PR and 3rd place.

HWFD                        First time throwing on loose sandy surface and first time with the 42#
throw felt good but I was not confident enough to try a double turn.
because it was my first time with the 42 it was a PR as well and got me 3rd

LWFD                        Couple good throws with one turn PR and 3rd

HH                            My 3rd throw was a PR and another broken hammer. That's 2 hammers
                                 broken in 2 games Ouch

LH                             Horrible! I threw 73 feet. That is a games PR for me but about 6  feet                           shorter than practice. I was very stiff

Caber                       18' caber in 15-20 mph wind sucks some how I turned a 12: on my first try.
That makes 3 games now and 3 12:00's look out Dan Mckim

Sheaf
I don't even want to talk about. The field record was 24' and I
choked big time and hooked it 3 times in a row trying to hit 24'
I could kick myself cause I can hit 26' in practice. I was honored
to be beat by my new friend Richard Mclain and happy he didn't
set it higher for next year

WOB                         Kick me again! This was the one I wanted to set a field record at
It was 14' I say was because Mark Ludwig raised it to 15'6"
Good job Mark. I hit 14' which tied the old field record. That makes me
                                Happy Happy Happy         PR baby!

All in all a very good day.
My son took 5th in amateur and my wife took 1st in women. I settled for a very happy 3rd

By the way my son is very sorry for killing the caber they call the Black Widow.

No worries Glenn. Cabers break.

I was quite impressed with your son. He is way ahead of where I was with the same experience. I couldn't pick a caber for the life of me for most of my first year. He picked a beast of a caber without a struggle. You should be proud of your son.

BTW, I especially liked your cheering section when your son was doing caber.

What Glenn hasn't been training! His last log was 4-16! What has he been doing?

Well, training of course.
My internet was down for a week and I have been working "the job" so i got a little lazy with my log.
Gym work: I have been doing some squats 5x2's at about 90% of 1rm cause I didn't have a comp coming up I wanted to add some strength. Also working my rendition of a low pull with about 80% of 1rm, hammer curls 40# dumbbell 3 x 10 each arm.
Don't ask how many times Ive been to the gym. I can't remember all I know is probably not enough.
My wife is addicted to running and hopping up and down the bleachers at the high school so we do that a lot.
Throwing: Mostly WOB and sheaf cause my standards are right out side my front door. still no new pr's which is kinda disappointing. Oh well I'll wait till games to set PR's I guess.
Throwing some stone and wfd too. I finaly got my double turn back it's slow but there. So no more falling on my face. I just need to speed it up now.
For some reason my hammer is hitting the ground and I can't seem to stretch out my arms. I know part of the problem is I don't have blades yet. Gotta fix that!
Wrist is still sore Grrrr! It has slowed me down a ton but it is slowly getting better.

The showdown between me and my son is comming up on May 18th. I think he is more ready for it than I am. I'm a little scared. Cry

Back's been jacked up for the past couple days so I have rested and stretched only.

Today  I threw some HH
What better thing than that to stretch out a lower back and get the hips popped back into place?
9 or 10 full throws after warm up of coarse.

Then I went home and sheafed a little
6 bottom up drills
3 throws at what I think my opening height should be. (made them all by a foot)
then I went up in 2 foot increments and failed at 26' 5"  because I wasn't measuring each height I got off by 5" oops!
I don't think I would have hit 26 anyway even though I threw at it about 10 times
Total throws about 18-20

Well I really suck I haven't been posting very much lately. I'm going to try to write down my training at lunch each day so I can remember what I'm doing. Today we did a mock games And I set pr's in light hammer and Braemar stone. I am throwing pretty good in spite of my SI joints hurting like crazy I really wish I could figure out a way to make them stop hurting. Springfield Illinois Highland Games coming up on the 18th and I am ready other than the pain in my lower back. Any advice, I would love to hear it thanks

I have a breakdown on yesterdays games in springfield IL.
I know I said I was done with C class but my son made me do it one more time. You see he beat me in Indy last year and I beat him at the Shamrock games so we had to have a tie breaker.
Open stone: not very good. 28' something 4th place I think
Braemar: A little better. 24' something 3rd place
LWFD: 42' PR my son hit 52 wow  I got 3rd place
HWFD: I have no Idea but I think I got 3rd ( see a trend here)

At this point my son is kicking my but and there is a beast of a man named Justin that is killing us.

Caber: ah sweet revenge. son 1:00,12:00,12:00
                                      justin 12:00,12:00,11:45
                                          me 12:00,12:00,12:00
The caber was too light but it worked out and I took 1st
WOB: 12' pr     2nd place
Sheaf: 24' pr     2nd place wow I was exited to get this. I knew I could do it I just had to keep my mind clear.

HH: Not sure whats up with it but I only hit about 57'     2nd place  (1" passed my son)
LH: 84" and change PR    really getting layed back with this hammer and getting a lot more speed.

Close one right?
Come to find out I beat him by 1/2 a point.

Justin took 1st
I took 2nd and Andy my son took 3rd
I can't say how proud I am of him. He is an amazing competitor that pushes this old may to the brink every time.
So after the awards they had a farmers walk were he put the smack down on me.
So we called the whole day a draw. No hard feelings and I get to go the Masters for good.

Ok it's been eight days sense the last games. I've thrown some but not as much as I'd like and I have yet to make it to the gym.
I have been doing a lot of physical work around the house cutting wood, mowing, cleaning so I am burning calories but I am not getting stronger. Cry
When I say "thrown some" this is what I mean.
Tuesday
wife's LWFD about 6 throws
Thursday
light hammer 2 throws
Saturday
28' Wob 5 times
42' wob 4 times
(Explanation)
coaching my wife, my 15 year old son and my 13 year old son.

One of these days I will find time to train myself.

I don't compete again till July 19th so I have been focusing on my wife's training. She will be competing at the Bonnie Brae in New Jersey on June 1st. She is majorly stressed out cause there is some pretty stiff competition there.

When we get Home we will be hitting the gym hard for some serious strength training.

Ok back from NJ a day or two early. Anita (wife) tore up her knee stepping in a divot with a huge caber in her hands. Surgery maybe. She had an MRI today so I'll post results as soon as I can.

I said I was not going to compete but the urge was too strong and I had to give in. Good thing I did cause it was my first masters class win WOOOOO HOOOOOO
I'll do a breakdown later when I have # but here is a preview.
The mans caber 16' probably 85 pound broke on the first guy to try it. So what do we do? We move on to the 18' caber that is about 150# no one turned it so the AD cut 1' off WOW what a difference. Ha! Still no one turned it but I managed to pull out what the judges called a 75 deg (more like 60) but good enough to win that event.
Also PR'ed in Sheaf big time with a 25'6"
and WOB with a 14'6"

Wow! The last time I posted was the 9th I have been really sucky at this lately.
Anita had knee surgery on Thursday so I have been taking care of her all weekend. She had 2 splits in the cartilage that they had to fix. She has a lot of hard work ahead of her to get back to where she was. Prayers please. Not to mention she has missed a ton of work and can't go back till the 10th. So with that and medical bills it has been rough.
I have been throwing some but not near as much as I need to.
Mainly doing LWFD with my son who is competing for his first time on the 20th of July.
I really need to get back at it and hit the gym as well there's just so much going on it makes it hard.
Ok enough winingCry my next post will be about how awesome my wife is doing in PT and how I have been throwing like crazy Smile

I will be competing in the MWC2014 in Inverses Scotland next year with 30 amazing guys. I can hardly wait! Even though I will probably get 30th place I am going to have a blast. Now the hard work needs to get even harder. I've got a lot to do before then so I don't look like too much of a fool.

July 20th 2013: Doug said there would be days like this.

Sweetcorn festival Chatham IL
This is the competition in which I got my ass handed to me.

Open stone: feeling pretty flat no snap at all throws were ok
Braemar: Got some good advise and pulled out a PR

HWFD BAD! BAD! BAD!   I have a tendency to become hypoglycemic some times but it is usually under control. It hit me in the middle of these throws and I could hardly throw. (No excuse I should have been prepared)

Ate a protein bar and moved on
LWFD Wow feet are moving again PR

Hammers I don't even want to talk about.Thumbs Down

Sheaf: oh yeah my event. Start at 24' What?!!!!!    missed it 3 times and sat back to watch the standards get maxed out at 36' WOW!

WOB not bad, no PR but consistent

Caber: 85deg   This really had me bummed cause I was the only one to not turn it.
Then today I realized that if I had turned it at 80 pounds and 16'7" it would have been the biggest caber I have ever turned. So I am okay with it (but it will never happen again)

Most of all I had fun and it was a big eye opener of how much work I have to do before next September MWC2014

I have now been throwing Highland Games for quite some time. I have started my second full season.
here are some stats:
Bench 260ish
squat 300ish
clean 200ish
notice all of the ishes? I'm not a lifter of a thrower.

Current weight 230 pounds and 15 % body fat. This is not exactly where I want to be. I was hoping to be 250-260 by September and about 19-20 % body fat.
I guess I need to get eating.
I had a few days delay from the time I said I would start my training log to now because I have been sick I think I have a case of shingles that I am getting over. By the way this hurts like hell.
I have now completed in 2 competitions this season.the Shamrock games in Illinois and the Reynoldsburg tartan days in Ohio. I set prs at both games taking 5th in the Masters 40-44 class in Illinois and 3rd in the Masters Class in Ohio.
I have a nother competition coming up May 17th in Illinois I will be competing against 2 of my sons in the B class so I will probably get beat up pretty bad.
masters World Championship coming up in September. Will i win? Hell no! But, I guarantee there will be few men in my class that will work as hard as me before the competition. Right now it looks like I will probably be in the top half of 30 men if everything goes well.
trying to sell my 2000 Fatboy to help pay for the trip. Still going if it doesn't sell but the trip will be much more enjoyable if it does.

5-6 sheaf toss
5 bottom up drills then started focusing on sinking me hips on the downward drive.
Did about 10 like this at about 60%
Did 15 full throws 6" from a PR
Not sure why it takes so long to get warmed up on sheaf. It seams like I have to throw 15 time before I see a decent one.

I know I know you are all dying to hear how my games went on the 17th.
I'll try to recap a bit
This was a challenge in B class and the first time competing with 2 of my sons so all day it was more about who beat dad.
first off HWFD (56) some how I got a first here with a huge PR

On to LWFD feeling really good first toss was a bomb setting another PR Got 3rd I think

I felt strong thinking maybe just maybe I could beat my kids and really show them who dad really is LOL

on to stones wow where did the strength go where are the PRs? not here I was off by at least 2 feet in both stones 5th or sith place boooooooo!

next WOB I'm feeling a little beat down after stones but WOB is a strong event for my. I ended at 11 feet with My 23 year old son beating me by 6" to take first

Sheaf also a strong event for me
somehow both sons set huge PRs and I took 3rd Cry

caber 18'6 90# caber I got an 80, 2:30, and a 10:30 I was the only one to turn it with my 18 year old getting an 89 taking 2nd

hammers I PR'd my HH by about 3 feet not bad for my first time in blades.
however my son set PR's by about 10' (yes he is new) hitting 91' on LH Clap

So the end of the day had me at 4th Andy at 3rd Joe at 2nd and our friend Nate at 1st

We my sons put me in my place but it' ok I am so proud of themClap

After the games we had a 280# farmers walk I made it 190' Joe made it 300' Andy made it 320'

5/20 hammer winds 5 sets of 6winds

5/22 sheaf 10 bottom up drills
                  12 80% throws

well crap! Is it really that hard to post daily? Must be, for me anyway.

So on the 1st of June I got laid off from my job of 5 years
June 4th I fractured my Humerus Bone arm wrestling at work. Doctor said I would be out for at least 3 weeks. I didn't break it in two what happened is the muscle pulled hard enough my bone started to come apart. hurts like hell but I wrapped it up and competed at the Stout Barbell games in Auburn IN and somehow pulled off a 3rd place setting 2 season pr's. now I let it rest and heal as the doctor ordered.

Needless to say, no world championship for me this year Scotland will have to wait. I have my sites on MWC2015 now.

My arm is almost back to normal. So back to lifting throwing and posting. I started a workout program that I designed a few weeks agoThat focuses on the shoulder and back strength With some emphasis on leg snap.
I've been working on it as much as I can with a sore arm. Now its time to think it in high gear.

Finished my 2014 season 2 weeks ago. I competed in 11 competitions with 100's of amazing athletes from the best to the beginner. I also had the opportunity to join up with Iron Pit Gym in Bloomington to host a game that raised over 300.00 for our local track and field team. An exhausting job but I will continue that as long as I can.
I finished the year in 71st place in masters and estimated top 40 in my age bracket.  Not bad for a skinny old man, I guess. I did have a few set backs. Stress fracture on my right humerus, left knee was out for about 3 weeks and suffered with major SI joint pain at my last games.
Disappointed that I didn't get to go to Scotland but am very excited about MWC in St Louis 2015.
If all goes well I plan on competing in the Masters 40-44 Going to take a lot of work but I'm ready to do it.
So I am re-re-starting my training log so I have something to keep me on track. Not posting any throwing this time just weight training.

Starting a 6 week Texas method on Monday.

Played the "10 of 10's game" flat bench press with my son. It's a game I made up where you pick a start weight and do sets of 10 adding 10 pounds each time till fail then go back down by 10's. It's a fun game that will burn you up and give you a serious pump. We started with the bar and went up to 115. I did wide grip bench and he did regular. Ended up at about 180 reps each.
