OK, I was bored silly with my old log, and from the responses, or lack thereof, so was everybody else.  So I'm doing a new one...and I'm going to make it different.  Just like I'm going to make my old ass different as well.  Different outlook, different goals, different log.  Just to warn you the log will actually contain alot less of lifting/throwing/conditioning...although that will still be there...but more general stupidity and things relating to nothing.  Feel free to join in.

Let us begin with a classic:

I've been learning alot about the Dark Ages lately (long story).  Recently been learning about the Lombards a tribe of Barbarians that eventually settled into what is now Lombardy (go figure).  OK so at one point the Pope asked the Franks under Charllemagne to kick their asses.  Which he proceeded to do and more or less created the Holy Roman Empire because Italy and Gual were then united.  Eventually there was a set of Lombard wars after the First Crusade where the Popacy (Papacy, but Popacy sounds better) supported the Lombards and Simon DeMonfort (ya the same guy that messed around in England) against the Holy Roman Empire.  I just can't figure out how it went from point A to point B, anybody know?

When we were in Inverness we wanted to go to see some of the places where they filmed the movie.  There is a site that lists the locations of different scenes and how to get there.  Ran out of time.  maybe next trip.

Oh and I figured out the Lombard thing.  Frederick II married the princess of Jerusalem and had a son that became heir to the ducality of Jerusalem.  The Popes couldn't have that since they had excommunicated Frederick for being an ahole despite the fact that he had become Holy Roman Emporor.  They would have supported anybody short of the Saracens against FrederickII.

Oh and ya, training.   This is going to be kind of hard to follow, but it's sort of how my brain works in real life so...
I wanted to try to qualify for the Pan AM Masters Oly meet.  In 45 -50 I would need a 175kg total at 85kg of bodyweight.  I weigh about 94kg.  When I try to diet I don't lose weight.  When I try to lose weight by conditioning I eventually get bored and that doesn't work either.  What does work for me is setting a goal and training for it.  So I want to do a Triathlon.  Just a short one.  I did a few when I was into that sort of thing.  they were fun.  I want to be the fat old guy that looks rediculous on his bike, that makes everybody stay at the end but still finishes anyway.  THAT is how I am going to lose weight.  Truth is I don't seem to be that worried about the 85kg thing anymore, i just want to finish the freakin tri.  500 - 800yards swim, 10 - 15mile bike, 5K-10K run.  From point A to point B, on my own.  I still have a bike, was running sort of before the snow hit, and can get to a pool.  I live in Triathlon county USA so there are a crapload of them to chose from.  I'm hoping for August or September.

There is a triathlon talk board with a strength training section.  Those people's routines make no freakin sense.  Who came up with them?  Way too much, too much fluff not enough meat.  They all say they want to "get stronger"...not that like you won't.

Back in the late 80's I did a biathlon...run/swim  and swam the Escape from Alcatraz. That was serious fun.  There's no way I could do those now, now at 300 pounds.  I'd have to drop to about 200-210.

Wow, that's supposed to be a bad ass swim!  I know you did sailing so it makes sense you were strong in the water.  I'm hoping just by doing this my weight will drop.  I may be wrong but...ah well it is what it is.

Oh ya, I got a nice set. 25's, 20's, 10's and 5's.  No 15's though.  a mix of Kraibergs, Wright rubber and Kraibergs with Werksan logos.  made a platform out of 3/4" sheet and a cow stall pad.  need a better bar though.  Just using some cheap generics and they ain't all that happy.  The end of my last Olympic cycle I was getting 65/85, figure I need 75/100.  My form is horrid.  Been learning the split snatch which has helped.

That said...I just saw The Hunger games for the first time.  was interested enough to start the series.  normally I avoid YA fiction like the plague but figure I'll give it a go.  About 1/2 way through the first one yesterday.  Anybody else read them?

On a positive note.  6 years and I still ain't dead!  How's that huh... as far as I can tell my brain is still mostly operational.  Right eye is still gone to hell but f' it I got 2 of them.

Finished the first book in the Hunger Games series.   Great story but I don't like the single point of view, especially that of a teenage girl.  Wish she would have done like the movie did and occasionaly expand it to the view from the "audience".  Probably start the second tomorrow.

Also need to start getting ready for a state exam coming up.  It's the one for the School Building Leader Certificate.  That is the Principal exam.  If I pass that I might automatically get the School District Leader (Superintendent) CAS from St. Lawrence, then I need to fork out another $400 for the state test in that.

Was seriously lazy this week.  Ok I wasn't really lazy.  I've been sick with one thing or another for at least a month.  Another bout of a returning internal infection, bronchitis, this years nurovirus, a myserious sthomach bug that hit all the male members of the family and a cold...all in about the past 6 weeks.  So I decided for this week to can the conditioning and only do the strength stuff.  Now I feel fat, old, weak and back out of condition...but I am getting healthier finaly.  Just some Dayquil Sinus and all is well.

I also have read the Hunger Games series (just like 5 chapters left on the last one Mocking Jay)  To summarize it is an awesome story.  Great take on an old theme with a more modern dystopian plot and the added variable of reality TV thrown in.  I just wish the story had found its' way to somebody elses' head.  To quote my wife "Think what that could have been like in the hands of someone that was an actual science fiction writer."  The young adult presentation, especially from a teenage female point of view (sorry ladies, call em like I see em) really limited the effectiveness.  It sounds kind of hypocritical given that I read them in just a few days and kept them open the whole time, but I feel I had to keep retelling the story to myself in a form I could handle.

Maybe that's why I liked the movie so much and look forward to the next 3 installments.  The movies told the story but without being in the main charachters head, which was a place i just could not relate to.

Ok so next I want to finish either of 2 books I have started but not finished.  The first one is about Boudica's revolt against the Romans.  Got up to the part where Boudica's father was making deals with the Romans then quit.  the other is a Sharon Kay Penman histrical fiction book called "When Christ and his Saints Slept".  It's about the English civil war between King Stephen and Maude/Matilda.  I dropped off as Henry I was mourning his son after the sinking of the White Ship.  I once heard this described as a Middle Ages drunk driving accident that killed a large part of the young Norman nobility.  Once I heard that it hit me that is really a damn good description of what happend.

Also been thinking recently about the terms "gay" vs. "homosexual".  I'm a well known and unapologetic liberal but this is one issue I think should transcend politics.  More of a human nature sort of question.  For some reason I see gay and homosexual as two completely different things.  I think this sort of came up once when we were discussing the pro's and cons of Crocs.

To me homosexual merely describes a persons sexuality.  Something that to me means little more than a persons preference in women.  You like what you like, I like what I like, no biggie if you ask me.  Gay on the other hand implies projecting overly femminine attributes onto a masculine background and therefore can be different.   In my slightly odd little mind I know many homosexual men I do not consider as "gay", yet some straight guys I consider gay as hell.

So a "gay" wedding is one I probably would avoid attending, but really have no problems with the thoughts of two homosexual men marrying.   Does that make any sense?

I decided I'm going to read the Sharon kay Penman one first.  The White Ship os actually a really cool yet sad story that one can relate to in modern times.
King Henry I had a son Prince William (would have been William III).  The entire court was traveling from Normandy to England.  The prince wanted to sail on this super fast white ship (imagine  a really big viking long boat), and when he went on it all the young cool guys wanted to go with him.  Sort of like if Craig wanted to go on the ship and you all wanted to sail with him.  Anyway they wound up leaving late and while they were waiting they kind of broke into all the alcohol and this big Dark Ages party broke out.  There is a  story about some monks coming on board to bless the ship and them throwing them off. The party quickly included the crew and captain.  So when they were finally able to cast off (after sunset) they all decided to show they could catch up to the other ships that had left on time.  The drunk captain and his drunk oarsmen managed to row the boat over a well known rock at the edge of the harbor.  It ripped a hole in the   bottom off the ship and it quckly listed and capsized.  The drunken victims quickly drowned (although it was actually kind of rare to able to swim anyway).  The only survivors were a lower ranked noble and a baker from Ruen.

I have, and I am sure many of you have, lost friends to drunk driving so this rings too familliar.  What made this different was since the only male heir to the throne of England and much of the young English/Norman nobility were killed it led to about 15 years of civil war and anarchy.  A monk writing about the times said it was "When Christ and all his saints slept."  Hence the name of the book.

OK, I'm a history geek...deal with it....

Anybody interested in Scottish History may like this series.  The first is a link to Hx of the Picts. These  are most likely a good chunk my ancestors since the place my family is from (Baddenoch) is extremely isolated.  It ends right after the abication of Constantine.  The next episodes come up from there.  There are 6 total.

Wow, I ran into a piece about the Bush War in South Africa and it just really reminded me of something.  In the 80's I was dating a girl whos' parents had immigrated from South Africa when she was like 9 or 10.  her last name was Dutchand her parents spoke Afrikaans but not much of an accent so I think English was their first language.

Anyway one day I'm over the house and her older sisters boyfreind was over and he was on leave from the South African defense Force.  Nice guy didn't think much of it since I think everybody had to be in the SDF.  I think i remember him mentioning being in "the bush" .  I had no freakin clue what he might have gone through, holy crap.  maybe he was just some desk guy back in Johanesburg or something but wow I had no clue what was going on there then.

Conditioning #2

About an hour snowshoe, pulled K for whole time and both boys for about 20 minutes

Outdoor Activity (Optional)

45 minute snowshoe, on my own

Dang kids are getting heavy, especially the 9 year old.  Was fun and cute pulling them in a sled when they were 6 and 3.  Now at 9 and 6 it's like doing 1000 one legged squats to pull the little beasts.  Was real proud of the oldest one though.  He wore his mom's snowshoes and did really well for most of the trip.

I bought "The Cube Method for Strongman" ebook.  It's by Josh Thigpen.  I like the basic ideas but it sets up a 6 day/week workout program (including events and conditioning). I just can't see that happening for me right now.  Still, it is making me think I need to realize at 46 I may only have a few years left to make gains rather than slow up losses, and I haven't used the words " __ rep PR"  in a long time, so maybe I need to try it.

Thinking about having a DNA mapping done just for the hell of it.  National Geographic is doing it as part of a research/fund raising thing.  Still costs you $200 but you get to add to the data.  Tells you a % breakdown of DNA atrands based on markers, gives you and ancestory map of where your DNA travelled and when.  it also gives you a breakdown of any Neanderthal or Denisovan markers you might have.  I'll bet some of you meatheads here would come back with like 80% Neanderthal....Tongue

Ok time for a completely non related rant concerning the word "dyslexia"...it makes me nuts...seeing letters backwards  or mistaking letters for numbers is not dyslexia...it is called "reversals" and is actually really common up to around third grade or so.

The term dyslexia is a greek word with the roots "dys" (difficulty, or broken) and "lexia" (reading, derived from lexicon which is words or language basically).  Sort of like dysfunctional family means a family with difficulty functioning....  Dyslexia was coined ages ago to describe any difficulty with reading.  This was especially true when IQ's were big and deciding who had dyslexia was basically a matter of comparing ability to skills.  For example Low IQ...low reading...just life, not dyslexia.  The term was generally used in the Psychiatric field.

As you can see (if you are still bored enough at work to be reading this) this term was so broad and nondescript that it had very little use for diagnosing and treating reading issues.  So the term learning Disability or Specific Learning Disability came out.  You then need to describe the area of reading where the person is "disabled".  There actually is no federal or state classification category for the word "dyslexia"....and I have to explain that all the time to  people...who should know better.

Somewhere the whole reversal = dyslexia thing made it into the vocabulary.  I THINK it is because it is something everybody can remember going through or knows someone that still does it, because it is so common.  Not that it isn't a problem for those experiencing it later in life, it can be.  It can also be caused by any number of things....but that is not what dyslexia is/was...and it makes me insane....

Are you going to need surgery? I pretty sure I have the beginnings of a an inguinal hernia. It's off and on though. How did the administrator test go for you that you took a while back?

I doubt it.  I'll see the Dr. on the 12th.

The test was odd, lots of opinion kind of questions.  The multiple choice part gave you several viable options but you seemed to need to look for the best or one you would do first.  There were 4 writing portions.  I felt good about the first 2, OK about the 4th, but wasn't happy with the 3rd.  As of last night the results still were not up.

Found the old squat suit to help the hip.  My Z-suit size should be 34, this is a 44.  I can put it on myself in one move, even the straps so it doesn't give much (if any) rebound, just some support.  But it squashes the heck out of the family jewels when doing reps so I did lots of singles.  Surprised as hell I got the 190 WITHOUT STRAPS!!  Since cleans and snatches kind of hurt I did more pressing stuff.  The Rob M inspired Incline log.

Nice use of the smiley thumbs up!!!

Today's rant is on neuropsychological testing....OK here's how it works.  Until recently we really couldn't look at a brain while it is working and see what really lines up with what.  Well we could but there was always that persons death side effect that was such a hang up...So most testing claiming to be neuropsychological or "brain based"  relies on 2 things.  1) A correlation between the behavior of a person with a known brain injury and an observed behavior in another subject.  For examle, guy with a spike in his head can't order blocks in a row...so if another person can't do it we can assume they have damage or weakness in a similar part of the brain or (most often) 2) Stuff that just sounds good.  Can't argue with it, cause it sounds good...

OK, what's up with the hernia?

I don't have power pants...they sound like something you wear when you get so old that you're incontinent.... but I do wear compression shorts when I throw.   Last weekend I had those things on, and a Tommy Kono wide neoprene back support/warmer.  I felt great all day.  Lower back was happy, happy.

But what was really great was taking all that squeezy stuff off back at the hotel room.

The doc cancelled the appointment (he had an emergency call).  I  need to resched. A "sports hernia" is a little different than a regular hernia.  It's more of a muscle tear, just in the lingual canal.  The term hernia is somewhat misleading.  It's also called "hockey hip".  Just got some power pants from Inzer.

OK so Saturday I was going to go trail waddling.  My 9 year old was bumming about his friend not being home so I said come on we'll go for a hike.  When we got there I said lets try running...I'll be damned the kid ran 2 miles.  No complaining, no walking, actually said it was too easy...maybe my unathletic kid is a distance runner after all.

Oh and before everybody says "cool", I am the last person to want to go to the freakin Bahamas.  What the hell am I going to do in the Bahamas?  I don't like the ocean, not a fan of heat or sun and can last about 5 minutes on a lounge chair before I get up and think I need to be doing something....anything.  I wanted to go to Poland or Iceland...but it's a Disney cruise and the kids are all into it....and I love those little rats.

Got a new Heart Rate Monitor (HRM) to try to work on my fitness.  Been a llllloooooonnngggg time since I owned one of those.

Yesterday was 40 minutes in Zone 2 on the spin bike.

Had my hip looked at, conversation went something like this:

Dr: "If you were an elite level athlete you could have surgery for this"
Me: " but since I'm a 47 year old guy that just plays with heavy stuff on the weekends you aren't reccommending it."
Dr: "That's basically it"

Was wrong the PT starts today (Thursday) not then (Tuesday).

Tuesday night I did my indoor cycling thing for 45 minutes keeping the Heart rate in Zone 2.

I've decided that although I really liked the Prelipin's table idea it's too much of a pain in the ass to figure out on the fly, so I'm going back to a modified 5/3/1 set up.  I'll still use the general light weight many sets of 3 thing for the speed/power work though, already seeing gains there.

Well, I don't know much about 5/3/1, but I would bet the main concepts are taken from Prelipin's table anyway.  Westside Barbell's routines (essentially) are.

I would argue that any decent weight training program has its basic tenents localized around the idea of balancing volume and intensity in accords with Prelipin's recommendations.  At least they should be.

The big difference with the 5/3/1 is he has you start with alot of reps in the first few cycles you wind up doing lots of 10's and even more at times.  After a few cycles it settles right in to where Prelipin would have you.  Don't know if it was on purpose or if it just wound up that way.  i just like it because I can put some weights in an xcell chart and then I'm set.

Last Night:
50 mminute indoor cycle.  Had difficulty getting my HR up above 105 for about the first 10 minutes.  Not sure if that is good or bad.

I have bronchitis, and my wife is telling me not to lift.  I probably will anyway.  Tommorrow is squat night...that'll clear my lungs out.

Log Press (kg) - 57.5x5, 62.5x3, 67.5x2, 72.5x2, 77.5x1
Open Stone (12 - 17#) - 3 sets of 5 throws
One turn Drill - Some with 28, some with 42, wasn't really counting
Mini WOD - Log Flip, 2 sets of 10 with 57.5 kg

One of those days where you just feel like you suck and will always be weak...oh well always next time. The log flips were sort of like a really short fingals finger...like if Fingal was a giant gnome, not just a giant.
