Hello everyone! I was referred to this forum by a friend who said there are a number of experienced strongmen here who could give helpful suggestions on which strongman log to purchase.

 I am currently deciding between this one http://www.monsterringsandcages.com/STRONGMAN-EQUIPMENT/Steel-Log-p117.html" rel="nofollow - - http://www.christiansfitnessfactory.com/index.php/vmchk/Olympic-Bars/CFF-Pro-Series-Executioner-Dual-Handle-Strongman-Log

The first one, the 12 incher, has the size and the proper handle distance, while the second one is a slightly smaller 10 incher and has normal handle distance. What caught my attention is that it also has a second slightly wider pair of handles - a pretty unique feature as far as logs go...! People train wide and close grip bench, so why not with a log press?! But on the other hand, while a press is still just a press, the 2" can make a big difference come competition time and a 12" log would leave less "doubt" (prepare for the"worst case scenario") since anything smaller than 12" in a contest would be relatively easier! It's somewhat besides the point but the 12" also has thicker 2" handles, which I really like.

I know you have to train specific to what you compete in (or in this case as close as possible since logs aren't standard) , but on the other hand, specified variety (like using a wider grip on the log) when done right is very beneficial, like with Westside.

So would it ultimately be better to train with a specific sized 12" log, or a 10" with two different spaced handles which would give a little more "variation" in one area (width) but less specificity in another (actual log size)?

One other consideration, I could theoretically get a swiss bar to train just the different possible grip distances, and still have the 12" log for the size factor and the usual hand space and not worry about it as far as the log goes - the swiss bar would be good / close enough... although I haven't found a swiss bar with a grip option of over 24", but I only looked at one swiss bar so I guess it doesn't really count! haha :P:P ...

I also left out which one I'm leaning towards, as well as the few other opinions I've already gotten from others so as not to influence your replies! ;)

I hope that wasn't too unclear or muddled! I'd be happy to answer any questions.
Thank you much for your input!

I would avoid the 10" log.  2" doesn't sound like that big of a deal, but it is.  The 12" is the way to go.  The 2 handle width thing is nice and all, but not needed.  Especially if you have a swiss bar to train on.

I would contact Mike Landrich (Landrich Power Systems on Facebook).  I am not sure of his prices for logs, but his HG weights are at unbeatable prices and he is a highland gamer, so you can support one of us (but I would assume it would be cheaper than the one you listed).

although I have no experience in Strongman, personally I would go with the second one. It has both handle options offering a little versatility.

Rob is right, get ahold of Mike Landrich.  12" logs are much harder, and the effect is multiplied if you are only 5'7".....  Mike had a 14"log in one of his contests and it made me feel like I was bending over backwards.

12" logs are horrible.
