A pleasant side effect of getting older is actually getting your head screwed on a little tighter and straighter and as such I managed to make some adjustments to my training last off-season (and in-season) that were an overall benefit to the point of probably having the best year of my long and inglorious career.

One of the first things I changed was leaving my ego at the door. I had come to the conclusion that I was never going to be as "strong" as I was in my 'prime' as it were, so why bother chasing that? What this meant to me at the time was lifting completely within myself, hitting a bunch of weak points, doing a lot more volume, choosing exercises that didn't hurt me and discarding others that did.

And a funny thing happened: I got stronger. I wasn't lifting "as much" as I had before, but stuff was moving easily, quickly and I felt and moved more athletically. I got stronger AS AN ATHLETE.

Most of us started lifting long before we started throwing and that iron-chewing meathead is still in there, telling us we need to up our 1RM all the damn time and often to our detriment. Form suffers. Joints and connective tissue is overstressed, inflammed and/or torn. And, in a LOT of cases in chasing TEH BYG WAITS, we get SLOWER.

So, for you young guys or old meatheads that feel like you've topped out or that "If I just lift X, I can throw Y", keep this in mind: the best guys in the world aren't trying to OUTLIFT anyone. They're just getting STRONGER than they were. Faster. More athletic. More COMPLETE.

Make sure you're doing the same thing.

Great post, Sean.  As a person who is now 50+ years old, I am currently struggling with "the meathead mentality" of knowing what I was once capable of lifting (and not all that long ago, either), and trying to reconcile that with the reality that I might not be able to do that anymore.  It will be interesting to follow your posts.  Hopefully, I can glean some insight into how to balance the two realities.

There you go, Sean!  Maybe you can write an Old Dude's version of Highlanders Lifting like that OTHER Sean did for the younger guys! Ha!

I've always been pretty good at the powerlifting lifts but didn't realize how weak I was until I did some Strongman.

Throwing stuff, lifting odd stuff, and working weak points has made me "stronger" and a better athlete no doubt about it.

We should measure our training progress on the throwing field rather than in the gym.

Yup. Have heard Teh Dan John mention this a few times.
