I'm curious if learning the glide or spin for the open stone is better for a novice thrower. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

As a throws coach, it is always nice to teach someone who already has a background with the glide. The glide is a lot easier and quicker to learn than rotational, and will teach all of the important features of the finish.

If you're totally new to stone/shot putting, I would say invest the majority of your time on the stand throw. Remember that about 90% of your distance comes from the stand, and so it's really important to master that before you start trying to learn a full technique.

In terms of the available techniques for open stone, I would rank them in the following order of difficulty to learn:

Braemar, Step-back, Glide, MSA (modified south african), full rotational.

I wouldn't recommend going full rotational unless you have access to a knowledgeable coach or you yourself have a strong throwing background, and you're willing to sacrifice a year or two to learn it.

I think the glide and MSA can be self-coached though video. If you're interested in the MSA, check out Matt Vincent's open stone breakdown posted on his "Drifta Lifta" blog - It is bang on.
