Thought it might help my training progress by starting a training log here. I started writing stuff down back Jan. so I will do a little catch up. Back in Jan. I started a well known program for gaining strength and weight called "Super Squats". Jan.24th Body Weight 286.6 lbs Bench Press- 135x12x2, Back Squats- 225x20, Light pullovers-45x20(more of a stretch to open up the ribcage a bit), Bent over rows- 135x15x2. Jan.26th Body Weight 292 lbs Bench- 140x12x2, Back Squats- 230x20, Pullovers- 45x20, Deadlifts- 140x15x2. Jan.28th Throwing- Stones and WFD. Jan.31st Body Weight 290.6 lbs Bench- 145x12x2, Back Squats- 235x20, Pullovers- 45x20, Bentover rows(curl grip)- 140x15x2 Feb.2nd Body Weight 293 lbs Bench- 150x12x2, Back Squats- 240x20, Pullovers- 45x20, Strict Shoulder Press(My ceiling is too low to do push press over head!)- 45x15x3.....wow shoulders are weak....needs more work! Feb.9th Body weight 296.8 lbs Bench- 155x12x2, Back Squats- 245x20, Pullovers- 50x20, Shoudler Press- 50x15x3, Deadlifts- 145x15x2. Feb.12th Throwing- Stones, WFD, Hammers Feb.14th Body Weight 294 lbs Bench-160x12x2, Back Squats- 250x20, Pullovers- 55x20, Shoulder Press- 55x15x3, Deadlifts- 150x15x2. Feb 20th Body Weight 294lbs Bench- 165x12x2, Back Squats- 255x20(starting to get a little tougher), Pullovers- 45x20, Shoulder Press- 65x12x3, Deadlifts- 135x5, 225x5, 315x5, 335x5, 405x2.....spent! Feb.22nd Body Weight 296lbs Hang Cleans- 135x5x5, Back squats- 260x20, Pullovers- 45x20, Shoulder Press- 75x12x3, Bench- 170x12x2. Decided to start doing 2 speed/power workouts and 1 heavy day per week aswell as throwing twice a week. First games is in May. Feb 26th. Throwing- Stones and WFD( cut short by blizzard!) Also feel like crap...stupid cold! Mar. 3rd. Body Weight 289 lbs Speed/Power day! Bent over rows- Barx10, 135x10, 150x10, 175x10, 225x10, Front Squats- Barx10, 135x10, 225x10, Pullovers- Barx15x2, Shoulder Press- Barx10, 65x10, 75x10, Bench- Barx10, 135x10, 145x10, 150x10, 155x10. Mar.4th Throwing- Stones, WFD, Hammers Mar.6th 295lbs Speed/Power T Handle Swings(Core Blasters)- 70x10x3, Deadlifts- Barx5, 135x5, 225x2, 315x2x5, Front Squats- Barx5, 135x5, 185x2, 225x2x5, Pullovers- Barx10x3, Shoulder Press- Barx5, 65x5, 85x2, 95x2, 135x2, Bench- Barx5, 135x5, 150x2, 160x2, 185x2x5. Mar.8th 293.5lbs Heavy Day! T Handle Swings- 70x10x3, Hang Cleans- Barx10, 135x5, 155x5, 175x5x3(Last one only did 4), Back Squats- Barx10, 265x20, Pullovers- 45x20, Bench- Barx10, 135x5, 170x5, 185x5, 225x5x2. Thanks Ray.....405 was tough....got all the way down but didnt have the gas to go back up. Need to focus on deep full squats so I am better at the drive from the bottom. Tend to cheat a bit when I am working out on my own I guess. We will do again in a few months...you should come out and lift with us.

April 8th Took a week off.....icthing to get back at it. 6 weeks till season opener! Time to kick it into high gear! Was camping with the fam this weekend so wasnt expecting to be able to throw but we got home in time so throw I did! Stones- standing-39' MSA-43' (think I will stick with MSA for now.) LWFD- Standing- 40' 1 spin- 55' 2 spin- 58' (was pretty gassed at this point...too much drinking and staying up late around the campfire the night before!) Light Hammer- no measure- winds to warm up, 5 or 6 full throws Ray brought the practice caber to the field but neither of us had the energy....next week!

April 10th Suppose to lift after work today but wasnt feeling it so I went out to the backyard instead. Tire flips x3 (not sure the weight but its F'n Heavy!) Caber pulls- pulling on small end of really heavy log WOB x 20 Hammer winds 10x10 MSA foot work drills Single Leg jumps All felt good and ended up doing more than I expected!

Sunday Apr 15th WOB x15 Stones- Standing best of 40' MSA best of 43' LWFD- No Spin best of 40' 1 spin best of 52' 2 spins best of 57'......not sure what happened here....just lost my focus LH- Forgot my boots! 100' still not bad without boots for me. Starting to feel like I am slacking a bit and my energy levels are down. Time to kick it into high gear! Lifting tonight.

Feels good to lift again!

Didnt get to lift much this past week. Things are very busy around here right now. Despite being sick....again.....I forced myself to get out and throw today.(Only 3 weeks left to Comox and Vic Games). I am glad I did....had a really good session. Braemar x 5- 31' Open Stone- 40' ish HWFD-31' ish LWFD-62-63' ish HH-85' felt like I had more to give LH-110' ish Starting to feel better and faster on the grass.....Now to get rid of the sickness and get ready for May Long weekend.

I cant take it anymore....still sick but running out of training days before double header season opener! Eliptical- 15 min....thats how long it took before I was coughing more than breathing! WooHoo! Finished first full page of my training log! Throwing today was good. Weather awesome! Had 10 people show up to throw...had to split into two groups! Hammers felt good and seemed to go far...didnt measure though. caber felt pretty good considering probably only second time I have done it since last season. Everything didnt feel that great but was gassed from lifting this morning and didnt get many throws in because of the number of people out today. Gotta try and get out throwing a bit this week coming up because of Mothers day next Sunday!

Just cant get rid of this cough! Tartan Parade yesterday to kick off 9 days of Highland Games activities! Had the honor of turning the caber on the lawn of the Legislature. Beautiful day and great crowd.....lots of fun and thanks to my sponsor Constantly Varied Apparel for the t-shirt! Didnt have time or energy to train at all this week....but despite being mothers day I am getting out and throwing today!

Victoria prides itself on their lawns! In fact we got in trouble for tossing the caber too many times! Went throwing with Ray today. Got to do sheaf for the first time this year! Sheaf...not sure how high but it went over my head for sure! Braemar 30' ish Open Stone 40' HWFD 29' wasnt feeling it today...distracted by my kids a little.....mothers day is only one sunday a year! LWFD 60'7" HH 85' ish LH 105'ish Done! and Done!

Had a great season opening back to back games in Comox and Victoria! I had a PR in each of the nine events atleast once over the two days! Cant remember everything but I will try and give close to new PR numbers. Braemar-(26#) 28'ish Open Stone(16.6#) 40' HWFD- 30' LWFD- 65'.....Huge 7' PR HH- 94 and some inches....5' PR LH- 115 and some inches....first day 5' PR from 104' to 109' second day 6' PR from 109' to 115'...very happy! (Almost had Mike Miller beat until he pulled out a huge PR throw of 117' and then 120' in extra throws!) Well done Mike! WOB- 13'...been trying to hit 13 for a long time...felt good and then almost had 13'6"! Caber- not a super hard stick but probably the heaviest I have ever turned....need to practice cabers more! Sheaf-(20#) 21' almost had 23' but hit the upright....I hate sheaf! Great weekend....pretty sore...time to get ready for Bellingham in 2 weeks!

May 25th Right shoulder/arm still bugging me. Stones- Release drillx5 Standing ThrowsX5 Glidesx10 No distances worth recording....frustrated with how everything feels. HWFD- one spinx5 two spinsx10 same as above...frustrated! Tired from work week....maybe should not have thrown tonight. Went home....Advil liquid gels, contrast showers, icing my shoulder and drinking wine......tomorrow is rest day...well...if you want to call it that!

Well......competed in the Bellingham Highland Games yesterday. Placed third overall in a field of 9 very good "A" throwers. The tightest comp I have ever been in. Only 6 points points seperated 1st and 3rd. I certainly dont have a problem losing to the two guys that I lost to.....besides evrytime I throw against them I am closing the gap! B-Stone- 21 lbs- 2nd place- 34-35ish....I think....cant remember. PR for me O-stone-17 lbs- not sure placing- 38 ish( need to work on this more) HWFD- 2nd place- 34 ft something.....4ft PR LWFD- Probably 4th- 61 ft something...felt like I had more just couldnt put it together. HH- 1st place- 95 ft something......1ft PR LH- 1st place 111 ft something WOB- 3rd place- 13 ft....was hitting the bar at 14 ft....very encouraging! Sheaf- 20 lbs- 2nd place...on count backs- 24ft... 3ft PR.....LOved the Diablo spitfire fork I was using....almost had 26 ft. Gotta get me one of those! Caber- 91 lbs....cant remember the length....was broken at one point in its life and has been put back together and splinted with Gorilla tape and pieces of re-bar! 55 degrees....sucked.....need to practice this event more.....especially if comps are going to be this tight on a regular basis! These number are not very acurate...will have to wait until they are posted in the Database to see for sure.

Well went to the Doc this week because its been over a month and I am still coughing like I smoke two packs a day. He gave me an inhalor with a pre-steroid(doesnt turn into a steroid until it comes in contact with inflamation)(Pretty sure its not a PED!). Only a few days in and it seems to be helping. Apparently the virus I had back at the beginning of May caused a lot of mucus in my lungs and airway and when I exhaled all the air wasnt getting out in time and worked against the new air I was inhaling casuing me to cough. The coughing caused inflamation and the inflamation caused fluid.....which turned into a viscious circle. Was putting a lift kit in a Jeep Wrangler at work today and caught a fairly hefty track bar in the dome! Said some profanities and saw some stars but think its all good. Got out and did some throwing tonight. Stone- Standing Throws x 10 Glide x 10....still struggling with my glide...need some help....maybe will take some video and post. Wish I could go to Matt V's clinic after Portland. HWFD- single spin x 3....27' Double spin x 3...31' LWFD- Standing release x 5.....50' Single spin x 5.....60' Double spin x 5....65' Spent...good night!

Sunday June 10th Throws practice with Ray and a newbie. B.Stone x 5 O.stone x 10 HWFD x 4 best 30' LWFD x10 best 65' ish LH x 8 best 115' ish Caber (light but long) x 8...only turned it once....frustrating...cant seem to ge the timing and when I do feel like I get the timing I miss the speed or the power...cant seem to put it all together...hope more practice will see results....

Well...all things considered I guess I cant complain about the outcome of the BC Championships in Coquitlam this weekend. I Did not feel prepared or very focused going in(even ran a red light on the way to the field!) But somehow managed to edge out a long time rival and very good friend Lance Barusch by 1 point....came down to the final event...sheaf....in the pouring rain...and I mean pouring! Heres how it played out.....distances are aprox. Breamar stone 26#-Lance 1st Adam 2nd- 27'(ish) Ray 3rd Open Stone 16.6#-Adam 1st-38'(ish) not happy but still enough to win Lance 2nd Ray 3rd HWFD- Lance 1st- 35'(ish) pulled out a big one to win on last throw Adam 2nd- 34'(ish)close to PR Ray 3rd LWFD- Adam 1st- 65' (ish) first throw and didnt feel like I got it all...close to PR Lance 2nd Ray 3rd At this point things are looking up for me...Lance and I are tied for points he will have me in WOB and Caber as long as I can take both hammers and sheaf then I am good! WOB- Lance 1st Adam 2nd-13' Ray 3rd HH-Adam 1st- 92' Enough to win but didnt feel like I was accelerating enough....feel like I have so much more there.....energy levels are slumping after long lunch break Lance 2nd Ray 3rd LH- Adam 1st- 107'(ish) see above...would not have normally beat Lance in hammers with these numbers but he was battling his own issues aswell Lance 2nd Ray 3rd Comp Caber 17'1" 83lbs(no taper)Lance 1st Adam 2nd 1:30 Ray 3rd Got a chance to try the Lou Ross Challenge Caber 19' 105#....didnt turn it...came close....think with a few more trys I might have had it. So everything went as I expected it to after the first 4 events. Now...after 8 events Lance and I are still tied in points and it all comes down to sheaf! And to top it off the most sinister looking clouds start to roll in and pile up against the beautiful coastal mountains in the background.....the first few drops hit me and I thought someone threw a cup of water at me! It was all we could do to wrap up the sheaf as quickly as possible and by the end I wouldnt be surprised if the bag weighed 30-40# instead of 20#. Adam 1st-22' Not sure if Lance or Ray came in second...but they both had 20'......and the sprint to the car was on! All in all great day and feels real good to win A class for the first time and to also win BC Championships for the first time...Thanks to everyone who stuck it out and helped out in Coquitlam!

Workout tonight was abreviated because of soreness from the weekend and the little ones bugging me!LOL, Eliptical-10 min Pullups Cleans- Barx10,... 135x3, 185x2....tweeked something in right trap....decided not to push it. July 13th Been away from lifting for the week....work kicked my ass this week and so did the heat....so tonight I got together with a good friend from work and lifted the week away! Warm up- Tire flip- 700 to 900 lbs...not sure exactly Pullups Core Blasters High Pulls- Barx10, 95x10, 135x5, 185x5, 185x3x3 Back Squats- 135x10, 225x5, 285x5, 315x3, 365x3, 405x2....PR Deadlifts- 135x10, 225x5, 315x5, 365x3, 405x2, 500x0...tried twice and only got about halfway both times....this is now my goal! Finished off with beer and steak on the back deck watching the thunder and lightning storm.....good night!

Going away on vacation for a few weeks so wont be posting much till Aug and then its go time to get ready for Calgary in Sept.

You know its been awhile since you posted when it takes 5 min to find your last post in the list! Its been a busy summer. Halfway through August now and Calgary and Minnesota are fast approaching. Havent been lifting much lately but have been throwing atleast 3 or 4 times a week. Threw in the backyard last night after work.... stupid hot out.....even at 6:00 pm. 33 Degrees Celsius. Stones- Standing x 5, MSA x 10 HWFD- 1 spin x 5, 2 spins x 5 LWFD- Standing x 5, 1 spin x 5, 2 spins x 10 Thats all I could do before started seeing tracers. Took two cold showers and a nice cold milkshake to cool my core temp down.

Little bit of throwing after work last night. O.Stone- Standing x 10 Spin drills x 10(MSA with no release....working on keeping shoulders back) MSA x 10 LWFD- Standing x 5 1 spin x 5 1st spin drills( working on getting all the way around and in postion for the drive to the trig.) 2 spin x 3 Had to stop because a family walking down the path I was throwing next to decided to stop and pick berries right in the dander zone! After talking with them I learned the husband just had a brain tumor removed and the wife just had a lung removed and they just got full custody of their grand-children...take your time...pick all the berries you need. Made me appreciate and be thankful for having my health, family, support and the ability to do what I love to do...

Just got home from throwing at the Calgary Highland Games. Was a great day and got see a lot of old friends and made some new ones too! Placed first overall in the Open Class. Had two PR's on the day. Open stone 42' 9"(fouled first two attempts and decided to go for it) and LH 116'. Didnt do so well in other events but lucked out and got away with it! Really need to figure out the timing of the caber.... Will post all numbers as soon as I get them....even the ones that I am ashamed of!

Well...thought I would go and give the old thumb a try before this weekend and it actually held up pretty well.....not sure if I will wear a glove or hook grip....depends on the handles they use in MIN. Got some pretty wicked shin splint type pain in my left leg after doing lwfd for reps....think its almost time for off-season! Finished my season in Minnesota last weekend. Wow...the toughest competition I have ever been. I placed 12th out 13 incredible Amateur Throwers. I guess thats the reason for their names to be near the top of the rankings! Felt really good going into the day and didnt throw badly all day. I like to think I hung with the pack for the most part. Low light of the day...caber of course....I am going to wear some cabers out this off-season! Highlight of the day....5th place in HH...wish they did LH too... would of helped me greatly! Big thanks to Kevin Dupuis and his crew for organizing and running a top notch World Am Championships!

An absolutely horrid thing to do on the elliptical is 15/45 for sprint cycling. That kind of volume is going to have you feeling, moving and looking good man. Keep it up.

Gonna have to put things on hold till Saturday... My wife went hunting with her dad last Friday and I have been single dad since. I have been trying to make it work and with the help and support of friends and family I have managed to stay up on my training for the most part but the last couple of days I just cannot find the time or the energy to get it done. I have so much respect for single parents.... I will continue to try and find time and energy but I dont see it happening very easily. She gets home on Saturday and then its back to business....also just found out today that they got a moose already so that means good eats for me this year!
