N00b alert!

Age: 50. Height: 6’. Weight: 270lbs. Locale: Seattle
Metro/Ballard.   New to throwing except for one season of
high school field 34 years ago.

How I Got Here: Stumbled on the ’11 Enumclaw games by
accident and decided throwing things looked like fun.
Picked up a stone and made a LWFD in August!   Found a
local thrower’s forum and, at the very first get
together, met a buncha Icelandic power lifters learning
to turn the caber. Now, just how cool is that?

Background in endurance oriented power sport.   Rower
(100 lbs ago). Surfski (80 lbs ago). Some olympic
lifting and weight training.

Coming off a seemingly eternal decade of
injury/recovery/rehab thanks to a miscellaneous self-
inflicted mishaps.   Busted knee. Busted elbow. Busted
wrist. Separated shoulder. So, have some joints to
strengthen. Maybe others with similar problems can weigh
in on that – more later.

Able to start lifting again in August, and throwing stuff
makes it fun like it never was before.

For you old dudes looking for fresh meat for competition
during our slide into the grave…

Lift PRs:
Current maxs are unknown. Won’t be spectacular, whatever
they are. Starting cycle to first max in years. Check
back in 5 weeks.

Throws PR:
LWFD: Single: 46’6”. Sprint: 46’4”.   That’s a HUGE
improvement! My sprint used to kill feet.

HWFD: Unknown

WOB: Unknown.   Irritates the hell out of my shoulder.
Done sparingly.

22lb Braemar: 27’9”.   That’s ¾. Full kills a foot.
Think I might need some work there?

18lb Open Stone: Standing 31’ and consistent. Add glide
and I can find THREE more inches!   Right now the focus
is on throwing consistently correct to avoid shoulder
problems. Less pain these days.

Sheaf: Unknown

Heavy Hammer: Single: 62’.   Double: 58’   Triple: 51’.

Any see the pattern there?

I do.

From these results it should be clear to everyone that if
you’d all stop moving around so much, you’d throw a lot
farther!

Science!

To all – thanks for contributing.   Looking to learn a
lot more from the forum.

Thanks guys. Duncan - You were the first guy I saw you
throw at Enumclaw.   You always remember your first!
(Sigh)

Ok - most everything is working. Here's the first
session in first cycle on the road to first maxes in a
while...

Warmup

Front Squat:
8*105
6*125
6*145
5*165
3*185
Stopped*

*Knee tweaked from Sundays attempts at rotational stone.
Need to figure out what I'm doing wrong there.

General Cardio/Strength Circuit
3 * (30 seconds of Pullup, Pushups, Overhead Walking
Lunges, Russian Twists with 30 second rest between) + 2
mins rest.

Plyos
3 * 10 * jumping squats
2 * 1' of jump rope

Shoulder and scapulae rehab.

Does everyone have more rehab equipment than fitness
equipment, or is it just me?

Hanging Leg Raises
Plyos - 6*10 Jumping Lunges
Grip - Plate pinches. 25" x 50

Rehab - Shoulders & scapulae

Problem areas:
Left groin & knee - In a particular controlled plane they
operate properly. Variants are problematic.

Throwing day...

Warmups
Pud Tosses

LWFD Singles x 7 - Farthest 41'3"*
LWFD Doubles x 12 - Farthest 44'6"*
HH Singles x 5 - Farthest 56' *
HH Doubles x 5 - Farthest 54'5" *

AWESOME day. Every LWFD double went farther than every
LWFD single.   That's a first.   It may mean that I'm on
my way after 3 months.

Not true in the hammer, but the doubles are starting to
feel like they make sense. Only a couple feet off, where
they used to be disastrous.

* Throwing at a new field at Seattle's Magnuson Park**
where I'm throwing uphill*** 3 or 4 feet so all my
numbers have to be recalibrated.

** For Seattle-lites - Magnuson has an AWESOME place to
throw. Concrete footing onto a hard packed sand field
that is NOT a groomed play field. Plenty of field for
big throwers.   No pedestrian or dog traffic.

*** Throwing uphill is part of my cunning plan to have
successful games. Presuming the games take place on
flat fields, and I only attend one per year, I should set
PR's at every one I attend!

Another Throwing Day - Focus on feel...

Warmup
Puds

5 x open stone - standing. Focus on proper arm, shoulder
, hand mechanics.   No shoulder tweaks!

5 x open stone - glide. Focus on shoulder mechanics and
repeatably finding power positions.   Only one shoulder
tweak. Repeatable power position is evading me.

5 x open stone - rotation.   Surprising improvement for
second week. One bad shoulder tweak. Two tosses sucked
bad. One was a good middling toss, and 2 matched the
glide max for today.   Gonna do more of this!

Glide 29'*
Rotation 29'*

Throwing up slope. Rotational probably significantly
shorted on flat, but still, happy that it's working.
Past attempts have been maining prat falls.

Hammer
5 winds for feel
5 singles for feel
5 doubles for feel.
1 triple.

Double 54' 6"
Single 54'

First time ever that a multi-wind outperformed my
singles. A fluke. But nice to have the possibility in my
pocket. The triple wind actually got me a middle distance
toss just slighter better than most throws today.
Generally more kinesthetically familiar with the
movement, but, not sufficiently aware that I can identify
what causes what.

Thought I was gonna get called out by the Parks
department, but they actually ok'd use of the field as
long as I plug my holes. That's the big win of the day.
A permanent throwing field!

Throwing day...

Meh. Tired. The GPP portion of that workout I adopted
is chewing me up and spitting me out. Almost couldn't
work up the gumption to go.

LWFD
Singles * 6
Doubles * 12

Another session where the tape trys to beat into my thick
skull the notion that right now it's more important for
me to learn to hit the positions and throw than it is to
try and impress myself with the speed of the weight.
One of these days I'll pay attention.

Hammer
Singles * 5
Doubles * 5
Triples * 5

Triple went furthest! Yay! Minor victory. Love it when
I accidentally make something significant happen. Gives
me hope. If I can ever figure out what it was I did.

Throwing day.

Feeling much better.

Warmup

LWFD
5 singles - Farthest 44.
5 doubles - Farthest 45.
Much better form today. Doubles feel like they're about
to allow me to start applying more power. Fast feet.
Good torque connection. Too bad it's always catching me
off guard so I never really launch. It's always "Oh,
man, that feels good, shitwhatcomesnext... too late."

Shot
5 standing - Shoulder mechanics
5 glide - new distance mark on new field
5 rotation - the potential of this feels much greater
than glides because I never feel I get a good launch,
but, right now, it's less trustworthy and just right on
par when it sorta works.

Absolutely no shoulder tweaks today. Doing it less wrong
and rehab is working.   Small victory.

Hammer
3 winds
5 triple wind throws.   Including best of the weekend.
Oddly, the farthest throw came from a wind where I
touched ground with the hammer on the 2nd wind.   Not
sure what that means, except that I'm doing something
less that optimal when I can recover and still throw
farther with one wind.

HWFD -
3 throws.
First throws with Old Celt 56.
Hahahaha. THIS needs LOTS of work.

Throwing...

LWFD
10 singles. Avg ~41'. Peak: 42.5'
10 doubles. Avg ~42'. Peak: 45'

"Low" seems to be the key concept for me right now.
Speed just causes trouble. The farthest throws have a
'slow motion' aspect to them.

Heavy Hammer
2 single winds. Avg 54'. Peak 55'.
2 double winds. Avg 53'. Peak 54'.
5 triple winds. Avg 53'. Peak 57'.

Off balance. Off kilter. Wobbling all over. No magic
in tacky except I now have no concern about holding onto
the shaft. Probably ought to just wind the hammer during
the week.

Thanks.

Throwing day...
Warmup.
Line drills for WFD.

Open Stone
Standing * 5
Half stance * 5
Glide * 5
Rotational * 5
No shoulder pain!

WOB
5*2 using kettlebell.
No shoulder pain here either!

Evidence of shoulder recovery is the big win this
weekend.

Line drill question. I think I need to be rotated more
at the second landing. Right foot typically lands about
10:30.   Seems like I should be rotated further to at
least 9:00 on landing. Can't tell from videos (Vierra,
Stewart) how they land. Comments welcome here...

These are pretty good numbers for someone just starting out, especially at our *ahem* advanced age.  good on ye!

Go slowish, the quickest thing that will kill your progress is getting hurt, so just be aware of your body and don't rush things. Slow and steady works.

Oh, and go see John Odden!!!bb

Re: Good numbers...
Thanks. LWFD is improving mostly because I like the feel
of the move, but, partly because it made such a fool of
me the first time I tried it. Nobody needs to break a
sweat, though. Hammer's got me stymied - got no clue
what makes that thing work. Stones aren't anything to
write home about. WOB is pitiful - ended up flat on my
ass in the sand yesterday because of that thing.

Re: Advanced Age... Go slowish...
I hear ya.   I hate being milquetoast about stuff I used
to tear up, but, it's the way of things. I'm
acclimating. Not without protest and learning the hard
way (two or three times), but I'm acclimating.

Early Christmas present!!

Yesterday PT gave me blessing to back squat!

The blessing goes something like this: "Well. I prefer
you didn't, but you'll probably do it anyway. So I guess
I'll opt to be part of your decision and see if I can
help you stay healthy. Besides, we both know who you'll
come crawling back to if you hurt yourself again."

So, this morning was a celebration of back squats and
good mornings!

Back box squat (light, light, light...)
8 * 135
6 * 155
6 * 175
5 * 195
5 * 215

Could have gone heavier or sped on through more reps, but
I can feel the wobble in the knee and the low back. So
I'll stay down here, build a base, and practice rattling
plates at the top through end of January then start
building.

Good mornings (light)
15 * 135
15 * 155

Circuit 3x ((30" on, 30" off) + 2:00 rest)
Bodyweight squats for count
Bodyweight recline rows for count
Pushups for count
Bodyweight Walking Lunges for count

Plyos
3 x 6 Jumping lunges

*Note: I have no idea how to craft a program for
throwing, but I needed something to keep me focused. So I
got an off season throwers program from PrimalATC. I
think it's designed for high school kids. I've been
following it for about 4 weeks. Haven't seen the magic
in my throwing, but man, I feel good. Shoulder is
improving. Back feels good. Knee improving! It has me
doing things I wouldn't have chosen to do, but that's
working out well.   Two thumbs up from the gimpy and
clueless!

Wow.  Where am I?    Looks good.   Hope there's an edit button... THERE IS!!!! SWEET!

Saturday
LWFD and Hammer.

LWFD averages dropped a bit, something I would have blamed on slippery surface, had I not popped off a PR (46') on that same slippery surface.   Just means I'm no where near potential.

22lb hammer averages were up to 57 with a high of 59'.  A new PR for this field.

Sunday
18lb Shot and WOB

Standing shot averages were up.   Glide averages slightly up with a high of 30ft.  Rotation averages were down.   When standing hips alone get me within 6" of a glide toss, I clearly need to work on glide.

WOB heights are unknown.   Tossing a 50+lb kettlebell.  Doesn't look like it goes very high.

Videotaped Hammer: No movement in hips or torso, just standing stiff.    Only a slight rotation around the vertical axis.  Still learning to sustain balance.  About 1 in 3 winds gets me off kilter pretty bad.

Videotaped LWFD: Footwork is worse than I thought.  I'm landing the sprint with right foot straight back at 12:00.  Seems to me from videos of the pros that I need to get the lower body rotated farther around.

The optimistic take is this - I'm no where near optimized.  There is lots of room for improvement.

Few days off for biz in Atlanta.  Wasn't feeling so hot this AM, and 5.5 hour airplane rides tend to leave me creaky, but...

Great throwing day for me.

Warmup
Pud tosses
LWFD singles with avg in 42's.  Nice and consistent.
LWFD doubles with avg in the high 44's with two 46's.  Still some inconsistency in throws.
Heavy Hammer triples with avg in the 57s and one 59.  Not bad, but gunning for 60 by year end.  Hammer is exposing low back weakness.

Focusing on low, Low, LOW in LWFD seems to be the key mantra right now.  Will work lunges and front squats to strengthen.

Learning to breathe between winds helps with Hammer.  Still losing balance, but I'm getting at least one good throw per sessions to help reinforce the proper movement.

Throwing day
Warmup (light - wasted from yesterday)

Shot/Ostone w 18lb stone.
Standing shot - consistent 25'
Landing shot (probably has a real name) - 26s and 27s
Glide drills
Glide  - Couple 26s, a lot of 27s and 28s and one 30'6".

Clearly I need to build some skill here.

WOB with 56
10x.  No measures

HWFD (shortened)
Ay chihuahua do I suck at this: 16,18,19
I know I don't need to throw it, but, it probably good to get some skill with a bigger weight.

Bleh.  Overcooked it this weekend.  No gumption.

Drug ass out of bed for partial routine.

Deads - 8*170, 7*200, 6*230, 5*260, 2*290
Hypers - couple sets for back rehab
Shoulder & Scapular rehab - tiny weights and tiny movements

This is the end of the first phase.  Suppose to deload then try some maxes.  But, too much instability in too many areas.   On the deads, for example, left low back, left knee and posterior complex squeak at 290.  Opting to simply drop back and start another cycle and keep building the base.  My PT made enough money off overly enthusiastic foolishness the last few years.  Time for sensible conservatism.

Uninjured and improving is a very good way to end 2011!

Resetting.

I want in on this old man wheeze party....LOL

Regarding squats... I have some lower back issues, so I take it slow. Figure that you don't need to be pushing monstrous amounts of weight in your first winter off-season. If you work slow and consistently this winter, you WILL get stronger. Then, after a season of throwing 2x a week and lifting once, you will be surprised how strong you are. Then, when you get back in the weight room next winter, I bet you'll do what happened to me....BIG improvement.

I think it just takes time, once we hit the 50's, to improve. Young guys work hard for 6 weeks and BOOM. IT takes us longer. The advantage is that we're wiser and better looking than they are, and have the required patience.  Smile  Just keep at it...and don't get hurt!

Oh, and do hang cleans or high pulls. Get a little bit of coaching on these things. I swear, if I had to pick two weight room exercises that paid off the most, they would be squatting and hang cleans.

BTW, 46 LWFD in your first two months of practice???  That's HUGE.  Lots' and lots of guys take 2-3 years to get into the low 40's...Like ME, for example!

High 50's for 22 lb hammer. That's respectable, right there. You'll get into the low 60's  soon and that's high enough to "place" top 3  in the 50's in most Games.

If you don't wind up on your ass once in a while, you're not trying hard enough.

Any particular flavor applicable to any particular event?   Seems that front works well for WFD. I'm guessing back works best for WFH.  Opinion?

Squats... beats me. I do back squats because whenever I've squatted in the past, like back when Hannibal crossed the Alps, that's what I did. Also, front squats hurt my shoulders and stuff.  I supposed that mixing it up with both is probably best. I attempt to do that with zerchers.

Yeah, Jay on this board/training logs is Jay O'Neil "Big Daddy" who trains with John, a lot.

Hey Greg,

Welcome to the board.  It looks like you are well on your way with your training.  Jay is a good guy to get in touch with, he is in Dupont and throws quite a bit.  He also holds training clinics with John Odden every once and awhile.

As for you squatting question I would say that front squats are more applicable to all the events, I rarely do back squats.  I know it is good to switch things up but I know lots of guys that don't do back squats because of knee's or back problems.

As for your throwing, again it looks like you are doing very well.  Just remember when you are out practicing don't always chase your PR, technique is much more important.  Lately I don't even measure any of my throws, I find that if I measure I always want to start speeding things up to go farther.  Just do the throws and watch for positions and the feel.  You mentioned watching Stewart and Vierra in one of you posts, did you pick up their throwing dvd's.  If not I would recommend it, CSAF (Canadian group) also has a good one.

I live up in Victoria but make trips down to Washington a few times during the off season to visit the guys down there or for clinics, hopefully we get the chance to throw together at some point.

Good to hear.  Back injuries here - front squat don't cause problems.  Backsquats and Deads are a direct channel to pain.

Re: PR...
Good advice.   Have a history of overdoing most everything.   Sensible is a foreign concept.   Good time, too.  Just picked up a Hoffa beginning shot videos.  It's very clear I need to learn basic movement.   Also read a Dan John article that described putting a target within nominal range, and simply concentrating on hitting that target with the least possible effort.   Said to help overcome something he calls the "speed barrier".

Have a Vierra and a Stewart highland video.   Each focuses on and articulates things differently - helpful to have multiple perspectives.  Will seek the Canadian video, too.   Had the benefit of a jump start with a local thrower, but until the weather improves and more people get out, I'm learning by video.

Re: Clinics south of the border...
I'll keep an eye open!   Happy to learn more.   Lots more to it than meets the eye!

Happy Post Maximum Axial Tilt!

LWFD - One surprising single wind 45.  Avg on singles was 44 today.  Plus, 6 double 46+'s including one brand new 47'.  Get to reset the stretch goal out to 48.

Heavy Hammer - All triple winds exceeded 58'.  But, (Dammit) high throw was a single wind 60+'.  One of these days I'm gonna figure this damned thing out.

Don't know where the heck those came from.   I guess the secret is to feel like shit all week.

Oh, chalked up for the LWFD for the first time.  Helps a lot!  No torn skin.

Also, from Matso's equipment article, learned to use tackied up leather gloves with the hammer.  That works great!  Used to just tacky up my hands.   My truck's steering wheel thanks you, Matso.

Made self a crappy beginner caber yesterday.  About 75lbs, 16 foot.   Shaved down one end with the trusty sabre saw and angle grinder.  Took it out to turn it and...

Cracked the shit out of it first turn.  Looked 12:00 ish though.   Got 8 more turns before it busted.

WOB.  Ugh.  Clearing 11 foot, but that's about it.   Need more mojo.

Practiced rotational shot drills.   Decided that I'm going to have to concentrate on speed and positioning because I'm not going to out power anyone on this board.   Getting some good feedback from speed work nice increases in distances when my focus is solely on speed and position.

Said I wasn't gonna do it, but did it anyway...

Deads 345.  Attempted 355 and failed.
Incline 220.  Didn't go deep enough on the first.   Nailed the second.
FSquat 245.  Probably should have attempted 250, but this number's better than expected.

Whole buncha rehab.

EoY 2012 goals...

Lifts - Since I'm really just getting started again...
  • Deadlift: 425.   +80lbs.
  • Front Squat: 300.  +55lbs.
  • Incline: 265.  +45lbs.
Throws - No clue how reasonable these goals are...
  • LWFD: 55'.   +8'.  Seems doable.  Just starting to figure it out.  With more speed...
  • HHammer: 69'.   +10'.   Can't make heads or tails of the hammer so there should be LOTS of room for improvement.   I would like to throw this well.
  • WOB: 12'.  +1' with 56#.  Hurts the shoulder at extension.   Modest.
  • OStone:  40'. +9'.  With some form, and some speed ...
  • Braemar: 32. + 4'.  Ditto...

Throwing.  Fantastic day.

LWFD
3 throws at 49+, with a new high of 49'7".  Think I fouled out on the big throw.
3 throws at 48+
Bunch in high 46's and 47's.

Soft and low first turn, then low and smooth sprint seems to be the best mantra for smooth throws.  My nervous system seems to be internalizing the timing because the best throws aren't particularly hard, however, there's no way I could articulate that timing, or even replicate it on demand.

Plus, I began practicing my competition throws.   31' foot and down hard on my hip and elbow on the concrete!  Took a few minutes to walk that sucker off.

When you going to start training sheaf? This is my favorite event!
Trapbar deadlifts are easier on the back and more like a squat. Give them a try. Really helps with the sheaf.
Nice training log. You going to do the Masters World Championships this year 2012?
Happy New Year!

Re: Sheaf...
Funny you mention sheaf - I just finished sewing one up.    It's shy of 20lbs, but it'll do to get started.  I'm hoping to have some natural chops at this because I pitched uncountable tons of hay on a ranch in the way back and long ago.  There oughta be some tendon development and muscle memory there.   But, I have some other issues that make "up" problematic these days.   Deadlift and squats suffer.  WoB suffers big time.  Have to see about sheaf.

Re: Championship.
Ha!  I just wanna do a game or two!   Last year at this time I had difficulty walkin up and down steps, and couldn't steer a car with my right arm.   I'm just freakin' ablaze with joy over the ability to move athletically again!

Hammer day...
Gonna give the hammer its own day for a few months so my nervous system can spend more time on the motion.   Built a simple light weight rope hammer.

15 rope winds
5x10 heavy hammer winds trying to find my inner hula dancer
10 heavy hammer throws - high of 62.  Buncha 60+.   Averaged 60.

Greg you can enter as a B athlete and if your numbers(from Competition) are good enough to make the 12 person limit you will get in.... shouldnt be much of a problem. Or if you want to come in as a Master Over 40, over 50 you can eneter. The key is to get you application in early.

Greg, you're 50+, right?  There's a limit of 12, I think,  in the combined 40 and 50 Masters, but we've never topped out in the 50's. Usually there are 4-6 of us, and you have the numbers to hang with us.  Between now and July...whoooiieee!

You bet. Get an application in to Wally Olecik early, like May.

Herea re your goals, as per a post up the board a couple...

--------------

Throws - No clue how reasonable these goals are...
  • LWFD: 55'.   +8'.  Seems doable.  Just starting to figure it out.  With more speed...
  • HHammer: 69'.   +10'.   Can't make heads or tails of the hammer so there should be LOTS of room for improvement.   I would like to throw this well.
  • WOB: 12'.  +1' with 56#.  Hurts the shoulder at extension.   Modest.
  • OStone:  40'. +9'.  With some form, and some speed ...
  • Braemar: 32. + 4'.  Ditto...

------------

OK, here's where I'm throwing right now, and I'm ranked #11 in the 50's in the NASGA database.

LWFD - 46-48,  with a few 'bad days" down at 42-44 in 2011.  I've gone over 50 a couple of times, in 2010. I'd sure like to see 50+ again in 2012

Heavy Hammer -  regularly throw about 64-66, PR is a tick over 70. I have a few at 68+

WOB ... I get 13 about half the time with the 42 pounder.  PR is 13' 6" .  I'd sure like to see 14 this season.  I don't throw the 56 much, but this past summer I cleared 10 but didn't get 11 with it at a "fun" Games.

Open Stone.... I struggled for 3 years to get over 30 feet.  I SUCK at Stones.  Now things are starting to click and I went over 32 feet twice in 2011. I think I could see 34 this season if I stay strong and keep the mojo flowing.

Braemar ... I've gone over 27 a couple of times, usually high 25's, 26+.  I'd be delighted to see 28.  PR with what is probably a slightly underweight rock, is 27' 7"

So there you go.  You are in the ballpark of the top 20 in the age class already, and you've barely started.  Just keep doing what you're doing and you will do *Great*!

Front squat - 10*100, 8*125, 8*150, 6*175, 5*195
Speed Circuits * 3 (Pushup *30", Row*30", Row*30", Weighted Lunges*30", Leg Raises*30", 2:00' off)
Plyo's * 3 (Jumping squats)
Rehab, rehab, rehab...

Note: Couldn't complete circuits.  Cut if off at 2.   The floors nearly got redecorated this morning.  I let GPP slip the past 4 weeks.   Clearly evident this morning that that I should shave lifting and NOT GPP if I'm pressed for time.

Hammer.

Warmup w Pud on a rope.   Wild discrepancies.
Walking winds forward and backward to learn to smooth things out.
Heavy hammer. 61+, several 60+, buncha 59s, couple 58s

Super tackled up and threw a buncha 52s. Learned there is such a thing as "too much tacky."

Tried different stances. Decided I'm not consistent enough to be experimenting.

Ugh. Extra advil please. 2 days of bad behavior in Atl and 12 hours in airline seats.

Throwing.
Pud throws working on torqueing lower body around.
LWFD singles w glove. Discouraging. Remove glove gain 2 feet.
LWFD doubles w and wo glove. Avgs lower than last week, but a couple accidentals to 50.

Avgs lower because I was neglecting to throw at end. Funny i'd lose that. Add throw, add distance.

Simply have to learn to throw w glove. Taped and spray glued as shown in the handy glove video, but this clearly needs refinement for me. Doesn't feel as secure. Maybe need to remove fingertips for more confidence in hook.

Snow.

Hammer.

Throws were a joke. Little footing. No grip. Nothing anywhere near avgs.

But it turned into an interesting exercise. Because things were so iffy, i had to concentrate on feel, and I began to feel the points where I destabilize myself and lose momentum. Interesting day.

Shoulder rehab.

Training - Too icy/mushy to throw...

Mostly movement work...

  • Warmup/loosenup/activate
  • 20 walking lunges sets.  Body weight, +45, +65, + 85, +105.
  • 5*5*95 hang snatches - reengaging crusty ol' oly motor skills w minimal weight.
  • 3*20*95 varying standing presses for shoulder stabilization.
  • 20 x rotational stick drills.  My step in and rotate is about .15 Jacko Gills.  (He would do 6 or 7 in the time it takes me to do one). LOL
  • 20 x LWFD drills (trying to land first turn without anticipating sprint, and trying to find something resembling a power position on second landing)
  • 5 * 100 jump rope for speed - best 32 secs.

Throwing - Hammer

Mild disappointment. Tossed new light hammer. Had seen material saying "if you toss light hammer 80, you'll toss heavy hammer 60.". Well, I throw heavy 62ish so I marked out my field to 85. Guess what.

On avg I throw light about 10 foot farther than heavy. :D. 70s. 71s.

Guess I'm just going to have to learn to throw this thing.

Got out to 34 several times.  Average in high 32's.  Good ones feel "connected", but always seem that I coulda put more into them.  Learned to start by pushing back across rather than up.  Big difference.

Gym
Hang Snatch - 5x3 at different weights ranging up to 135

Power Cleans - 3x1 at 175,  2x1 at 195

Sore. Sore. Sore.

Light hammer.
My singles go 74, 75. My multis go 72, 73.   Need to fix this.

5 sets of 5 winds attempting to go from slow to fast.
Alternating single and doubles to feel the difference in the cast.
On singles I catch early, pull hard, and get knees and hips into it.
On doubles hat strong accelerating pull and lift disappears. The catch is missing, the pull seems limp and my hips and knees seem to forget their bit.. This must have something to do with coming over the top for the second wind and/or rotating shoulders back to catch that gets me out of position or off timing or off balance.

Lots more winds in my future.

Gym for shoulder rehab with lacrosse balls and bands and a few light hang snatches.

This is who gives me training advice and checks my form in the squat rack.  You laugh....it's true.  I swear that I am not making this up.

I don't have any R-rated pictures of Donna P.,  who helps me out with form on my Olympic Lifts, so you'll just have to ogle Wendy.

Ogled as ordered, Sir!

Good work on coach selection.

Me? I just paid money to watch Vierra's hips.

This sport is gay.

Throwing. LWFD.

Thanks to the Odden clinic and a couple very useful threads on this board, I have a little bit better idea of how I'm supposed to be positioned and how to gauge movement..

5 standing pud casts
5 turn and drops
5 singles - ranging from 44 to 48.
10 doubles - 49s 50s 51s and a 52.   New PRs for me. Feel there is a lot more available here if I can pattern the movement and positions better.

Misc:
Now using a slightly shortened and narrowed trig, as mentioned here.
Better taping (Odden)
Better awareness of positioning (Odden and here)

All good, here. Win-win.  Turns and drops...love them. Hit the position.  Your numbers went up, too.  Life is good!

Yep. Plus I video'd everything and I know enough now to see what's wrong! For instance, after watching the 52 footer a couple dozen times, I can see why it's a better throw, and I can see there's room for improvement! I have no separation at the end of the second turn - I land hips in line with shoulders and just let momentum carry it around. If I can land better, I could actually throw after the second turn. Anxious to try again next weekend!

I LOVE this stuff!

Working my medialis!  Trying to get that damned thing firing again.

Damaged myself some time ago and my left posterior chain retired.

The net is that my back has to do way too much work.

Trying to bring left posterior chain back on line.

Banded kettlebells are just the ticket for fixing that!   Hits hams, glutes and back.

The snatches and cleans are just form work.

Gym.

Ugh.  I always end up pukey on Tuesdays.   Wondering if I need an extra recovery day after hard workouts on Sat and Sun.   I can do the same workout on Thurs and walk out of the gym with some spring.  Tuesday, I'm trying to keep from retching.

Front Squats - Deload week.  Focusing on "tearing the floor" and getting my ass in gear.  6x135, 6x165, 6x165, 6x165, 6x165

Short Circuit - 3 x (Recline rows, walking lunges, pushups)

Took apart some stone videos from the weekend.   Props to the creators of video editing software because frame by frame review is a fantastic way to shed your delusions about what you think you're doing.

The BAD NEWS is that I NEVER rotate the landing foot to create separation at the hips in the glide, the rotation, or the Braemar.   I'm just pushing off the landing foot, hips and shoulders aligned, and I sorta lift and throw.   My throw from the end of rotation is particularly gruesome - my landing foot is pointed out the back as I attempted to throw!!!

The GOOD NEWS is that it's easy to see plenty of room for improvement.

Greg, I actually stand most of my Open Stone throws, because when I glide I have a really hard time keeping a solid power position.  It's slowly getting better, but still....

When I do that...stand the open stone, I actually "toe in" my back foot.  Rusty Price taught me this.  So my back foot...in my case, my right foot.... is not pointed out the back of the trig. Nor is it pointed directly out the side of the trig, it's actually pointed forward at an angle, semi-towards the trig.

Advantage to this is that it makes it MUCH easier to get my hip around, because the knee is already going that way. DIS-advantage to it, is that it's hard on my knee.  If I practice this a lot, my right knee gets sore.

Might be worth a try.

I am just at the point now where when I "stick the hip" with the Braemar stone, it's going farther than when I just crank back and whale on it as FAST as I can.  Up until now, the stupid rock went farther if I didn't try to do any fancy business, and I just reared back and heaved the sucker.   This will be an interesting year, at least with stones that sit all nice and comfy under my jaw, I will probably start to try to "do it right".

Yeah.  I can remember to get the foot around in the drills, and in slow throws.  But, when I get focused on distance, things go to heck in a hand basket.  Don't know how many times I'm going to have to hear "focus on the positions, not distance" before I actually internalize it.

I can pick up a couple foot with a glide if I remember to push back on the heal rather than 'jump/hop'.   So I'll keep the motion.   I just need to give it some time and focus.   I'm more keenly interested in LWFD and now Hammer, because those darned things embarrass me so badly.   Now stone's making fun of me, too.    And I have to have some technique, because I simply don't have the strength.

Not a problem.  Nothing motivates me like personal dissatisfaction.   And nothing makes me more dissatisfied than awareness of my performance flaws.

So, I'm most happy when unhappy.  It's leverage for continuing improvement.

ACTUALLY..... if you go look at a bunch of shotput gliders, like the old 70's videos on YouTube, you'll notice that their back foot isn't so much rotating in the middle of the ring. It's the rotational throwers that have to get that sort of action.

Brian Oldfield glide

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NB7ShzETOVA" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NB7ShzETOVA

His center foot IS moving, but nothing like a rotational thrower.

John Brenner

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUhBp0H6wNk" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUhBp0H6wNk

Four incredible gliders....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxKuqpxmKKk&feature=related" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxKuqpxmKKk&feature=related

So I wouldn't worry too much about getting rotation on that foot when gliding the shot. Push off the heel, land with the foot pointing out the side of the trig and just jam your hip out there as hard as you can.

At least...that's what I'm doing!... all 33 feet of MY glides!
