I'm reading it.

"Drank way too much last night. Time to cut out the alcohol fueling for
a while." - Quitter!

Where are da fronts?  Where is da pulling?

Good things happening here.  If you are going to train with Svavar, ask him to take you to the jacuzzi.  He will know what I mean.

Come to Keller one Saturday/Sunday and we can throw.

11-24

Turkey Day Mofos!

Sleep schedule is all fooked up so I rolled out of bed around 5 after laying there for an hour. Watched about 5 or 6 episodes of South Park, starting over with the first season, watched some Top Chef Texas and decided to do a little cattleballing.

warm up (meh)
1 arm snatches
24k bell
1-2-3-4-5
32k bell
1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2-3
suit case carry
40k bell
4 out and backs each hand x 2
8 out and backs no stop switching hands at each turn, more speed on this one

I was going to do stone walks but it's wet and I don't want to run the risk of slipping and hurting myself so I figured some suit case carries would be a decent low level substitute.

Watching some more TV, drinking coffee, and prepping myself mentally for the turkey-geddon.

Barefoot, makes my old dogs feel new.

I'm thinking of picking up a new pair of vibrams or maybe the new adidas toe shoes. Barefoot may be rough over the winter.

11-25
Turkey Day
Maxes
Squat 365 3 rep max
Close grip bench 195 3 rep max
Deadlift 365 1 rep max (315 came up like nothing. Jumped to 405 and it was stapled to the floor)
Strict standing overhead press 165 1 rep max

My most recent maxes
Squat 455 2 rep max off a low box, briefs and belt
Bench ? I quit doing this for a while to focus on my overhead and try and bring up my lagging left arm
Deadlift 500 at the Highlander no belt, no shoes, but with straps and a hitch
Overhead press 205x3 was my last decent set over 200. I've done more but I can't remember exactly how much and this is good enough for now.

A year of consistent training after about 3 years of mucking about with kettlebells and endurance stuff. Now lets just hope I don't mess this up and I can get another solid year of lifting, throwing, and doing work. No real specific goals for next year yet other than throw further and get stronger.

New sports to suck at next year. I believe the next step is figure out a good bench specific program, buy a singlet, and pick out a powerlifting meet. I may try and swing an amateur strongman but it'll depend on the timing and the weight of the events.red

11-25
50 hammer winds each way 5# on the handle focusing on speed, fluidity, long arms, and hips.
Footwork drills doing the double turn for WFD 10 rds
Braemar throws with the 16# shot - 10 times

My lower back is SMOKED.

Time for a maple bacon cupcake.

Later beers AMRAP

My hammer winds felt good and I mean real good. More than one session I had both hips moving real well, only lost my footing twice, I think I did the WFD footwork drills close to right, and my Braemar was a nice consistent distance but I never got in the groove, makes me feel good about my distance once I get some more stuff dialed in.

11-26
cattleball warm up

Overhead press
45-65 x5
85-95-115-135-155-175-185-205-225 x3 pr

Box squat
45-135 x5
185-225-275-315-put on briefs-365-405-455 x3 pr

Deadlift
225-275-315-365-405-455 x1 slow but I've got an opener for
metroflex highlander now.

The PR press was not strict but it's close enough to count for now.
The last squat was SLOW but it kept moving and my knees didn't cave
in so I'm happy about that. Couldn't get a good groove today. And the
bar never seemed to be right. The last deadlift was slower than
expected but it wasn't a max effort lift so I think it'll be a good opener.
I hook gripped all reps and dropped the weight. I'll strap up for the
highlander. I also wore my briefs. That hurt my form, I couldn't seem
to get my hips down enough. All the speed deads from here on out
will be without the briefs.

11-28
overhead throws for height
light stone 13#(?)
Braemar throws
other light stone 11#(?)
big stone carry approximately 230#
2 rds
carry approximately 50 yards no drop/2 turns
1 rd of dizzy and stumbling around after first carry, from carrying the stone high on the chest
1 rd of dry heaving and coughing after second carry.

Played with the cattleball
tried out a rig up for heavier suitcase carries-needs more cowbell
waiters walks 40k bell
2x16 yards each hand
Much easier than expected-made my shoulders feel bueno.

LOL

It came from the local cupcake place that just opened.

Angel food cupcake, maple icing, and a couple of crispy pieces of bacon on top of the icing.

Here's a pic if it works.

12-5

cattleballs
2 rds with lots of rest between sets
5 bulgarian goat bag swings
5 goblet squats
5 bottom position squat curls
16-24-32-40k ball

I may do some more stuff in a bit but I don't know for sure. Life is kicking in the cahones but it ain't nothing I can't deal with or nothing I don't deserve due to all my bad karma.

The bad news is I'm going to back out on the mainline after the first of the year so no more sleeping at home every night, no more weekends off, no more paid holidays, no more working a few hours and going home. The good news is I'm going back out on the mainline so more money, less actual effort, more gym time (nothing better do to in the motel), more time for low intensity cardio (see previous reason for more gym time), and more time to read so my brain doesn't continue to rot away.

Some randomness this week. Mainly dealing with my stupid head. Relaxing tonight, getting up at the asscrack of dawn to drive to Fort Worth for the Metroflex Highlander.

I am seriously hoping what little work I've done since the Celtober Cowtown Throwdown pays off in some new PRs.

And I'll never beat him but I'd love to make Svavar sweat a little from me breathing down his neck. That's the joy in competing against a monster like that. I may never beat him but I'll break myself trying and that means PRs for me even when he kicks my ass. Plus he's a great guy.

Metroflex Highlander report

3rd out of 3.

PRs
Braemar by 7" - 25'10".
LWFD by 8.5" - 38'11".
Deadlift - 525.

Got beat by seconds on both of the freaking medleys. Forgot to turn my belt around and the axle caught on it. Cost me a couple of seconds and probably 2nd in that event.

3rd on overhead medley, 3rd on tire and keg medley, 2nd on lwfd, 3rd on Braemar, tied for 2nd on wob and deadlift with the exact same number of attempts and/or weight.

The competition was legit. Svavar was kicking ass as always but Mo from Shreveport was legit. He beat Svavar and me both on the tire and keg medley. Holy heckballs running with a 250# keg SUCK! Well shuffling fast and trying not to pass out not running.

Random thoughts, musings, and a bit of whining.

The gist of the day. I put in serious work, set some PRs, hung within seconds of my competition, had no major heck ups, and I lost. It doesn't get any simpler than that. I'm pissed about losing. Not because I could have won, I couldn't. Or brcause I was better than either of my competitors, I wasn't both were legit competition. But simply because I want to win but I'm a long way from there. Today wasn't my day but I had a good performance, I learned some things, and I had a pretty gawddamned good time. I was within 2 seconds of second place on the overhead medley, five seconds on the tire flip/keg medley, and around 2 feet or so on the Braemar. And I probably would have been top 5 no matter how many competitors. But I got beat. Sometimes your best just isn't good enough and heck me it burns when you're so close you can taste it. No excuses, no regrets. A short recovery and back to work. But first it's time for Bourbon and beers.

And for the record I'd rather show up and fight my ass off to good competition than have a stack of weak sticks to walk through.

Another plus is I got to meet StefΓ‘n SΓΆlvi PΓ©tursson. The heavyweights had to carry a 350# keg for distance yesterday. Svavar told me that a 350# keg is part of the overhead press medley for Stefan's next strongman. Thanks to Svavar for dragging Stefan out so I could meet him. Great guy.

I make the statement that I've got to get a lot stronger. He looks at me and says "how are you going to that?" I was speechless at the stupidity. I finally said I was going to keep training and eat a lot.

My warm up is part exercise, part meditation, part primal scream, and part freaky tribal dance.

I didn't throttle him. He's so clueless it's amazing. The best part is he's a "trainer".

12-28

25' walk 40# vest and 2 wee dogs. The Amazon wrangled Chewie. Hip was acting up as was my right foot.

16k ball fun
Bulgarian Goat Bag Swings
Goblet squats
Squat curls

1-2-3
200# sandbag lap and load
1-2-3-1-2-3
Attempted 250#
lapped but couldn't grasp it to load.

I've already busted a couple of the inner bags in my sandbag but the outer bag keeps my floors sand free.

200# not all that heavy. 250# awkward to lap and impossible to grasp to load if I lap it stupid.

I think I've figured out why my lower back is toast all the time. I'm letting my lower back round when I go too deep. Focused on getting to the proper depth without tucking my rear and really stretching everything out.

Needed to do PVC rolling, band curls and triceps extensions but I forgot. I may throw them in tomorrow.

I need to throw. Friday maybe, Saturday for sure.

I also believe the dipstick may have been alluding to anabolic use.

I don't think he believes you can make progress on hard work, consistency, a bit of common sense, and lots of food.

I'm no monster like you(Duncan), Matso, Andy, Craig, and many others here but I'm happy with my progress so far. I graduated high school 155# now I'm 36 and 230#. After a little over a year back lifting I've surpassed quite a few old PRs and now thanks to the Games and Highlanders I've got new things to PR in.

Everybody is looking for the magic bullet when hard consistent work is the simplest most effective answer.

Quitsky.

This was supposed to be a light day and for once it was. I've got to do my sandbag work on Tuesday. Yesterday was just too much.

I'm not rushing this for a change.

Throwing practice was teh sux. But it's to be expected.

Sandbag was too light. More endurance work than than strength work. Need to repack the inner bags and maybe bag up some chain to make it heavier and less cumbersome.

I am a hyooge sissie today. I struggled with a weight on the jerks that I should be able to press. I cut the complexes back because I'm fat, out of shape, and haven't slep good in a few days due to long nights at work. I'm not drinking enough water so I'm slowly cutting back on the coffee and trying to get up to a gallon of water a day.

232 after lifting today. Now I need to keep it around that while I add muscle and shave off a little fat.

Next week I add in some light conditioning and prehab/rehab work. I figure maxwell's daily dozen or the YRG 20' workout and a 20' weight vest walk will be enough.

I'm thoroughly disgusted with myself right now.

Out of the Kickoff Games because that's my son's birthday. Me and the Amazon may make the Brothers Vincent Throwing Clinic and Jam-Bear-Roo we just have to make sure we don't have anything else scheduled.

Experimenting with the "no hands no feet" snatch and clean with the hope of easing into the full versions of the lifts and to scale back my intensity. I'm dumping too much intensity into my fast lifts and complexes and it's hurting my big lifts.

The petechia is off the charts. I look sunburned. Yes I did dips and chins. After that last squat set I couldn't stand the thought of doing another big lift or even dumbbell work.

Finger curls with my cattleballs

These were ugly but I think they may have some effectiveness.

Tried to pick up my 16k like a blob.  No go but I'm close.

1 time each hand double 24s-32+16-40+24 until the hand gave up

Low back was hinky and I started to put this off but I figured I'd go in easy and see where it went. I may have done more sandbag stuff but it was cold and getting dark.

Back off this week.

But now  time for beers and chili.

I feel good.

Now the hard part is figuring out how much of this kind of stuff I can put into my regular training without interfering with my core lifts.

I should get off work early tonight *crosses fingers* so I'll get to bed at a decent hour and hopefully get up and throw a bit tomorrow.

I was going to do singles on squats but I unracked it and lost my hecking mind. *shakes head* I'm a sick man.

Yet again at the time I'm trying to quit drinking for a while the world gives me another kidney punch. The van has been running fine and my first trip out of town the wife drives it to work and damn oil light comes on. I'm within a cunt hair dumping 5 gallons of gas in it and setting on fire.

But I'm good. No oil light on the return trip so we are going to just drive it until it blows or I get a good check or two then she'll get a new ride.

Now I'm sitting in the motel watching It's Always Sunny with a sore thumb and two sore hamstrings.

30' walk

Work all night, heading home for 10 or 12 hours of rest, back to work. Not eating enough. I'd beat a hobo to death with a rolled up magazine for a beer.

Checking my ego and going back the close grip bench. This will be day 2 rather than 3 starting next week. It'll be nice moderate intensity day. Slowed down and tried to do the last set of finger curls strict.

Bench xl sleeves and wraps thumbless grip
Rows straps and strict
Face pulls I focused on pulling the shoulder blades together and getting a brief static hold
Caber curls were sloppy and fun
Finger curls first set strict and easy second was a wee bit sloppy third I slowed down and did right

In Hooterville waiting on a phone call. Maybe a van ride, maybe a train, maybe a van ride to get on a train. I'm hoping for a train whether I get a van ride first isn't important. I get a train I get two days off thanks to the Feds.

This week I'm going to start doing a light conditioning session between every weight session. Trying to up my work capacity. Plus I'm spending a lot of time laying around on my anoose so I need a bit more work. Should have done a bit of tossing today but I needed the sleep.

Yesterdays cattleball session took more out of me than I expected. Last set of 5 on squats was way too hard. I developed a nice little knot in my back just below my right scapula on the first set of curls. Hands gave me hell on the dumbbell circuit. Did some standing broad jumps and tuck jumps before the first 3 or 4 squat sets.

Good session and I learned a little something.  I didn't realize how much a light conditioning session the day before can destroy a squat session.  Change of plans.  Β

Missed my last session of deads and presses to spend the day with my Amazon.

2-21

BobW heavy deload session
partial deads off plates, bar just below the patella
135-225-315-405-495 x1

tweaked my right low back any one with good sense would have called a day. But we all know that guy with good sense don't live here.

Modern Day Viking Warrior ConditioningΒ

Well not so much. Paced myself and kept e'rythang strict.

swings and burpeesΒ

Partials were way harder than I expected. Just goes to show I'm no Duncan. :)Β

Modern Day Viking Warrior conditioning session went better than expected. I expected to run out of time on the 11 set. 51 out of 91 reps ain't bad for a fatty like me.

The Brothers Vincent throwing clinic all day.  ALL DAY!

I'm beat.  Good to see everyone, learn a lot, and get in my throws.

I hate that I'm missing the games tomorrow.  The Amazon is excited about her first games and as always the North Texas Heavies are tops.

Got new toys to play with from Matt and I've got a new plan in the works.  Back to the grind.

I had to google that guy, never heard of him.  Then I saw pictures of a tiny man and stopped my search.

What does his warmup consist of?

Although I wouldn't be surprised if crossfitters did a dutch rudder as part their warm up, I suspect that isn't it.

I didn't know he was an @fitter.  A friend of mine turned me onto the warm up.  I like it, Mike Burgener's warm up, and some stuff I stole from Dan John when I take the time to warm up.

Here's a vid of the Dutch Lowy warm up

3-1

3 hour nap
Throws

8 or 10 throws Modified South African
Spinning instead of driving
All throws were horrible. I threw a couple Braemar almost as far or as far as the others. Finally said one more throw. Took one at 80% focusing on driving towards the trig and letting my hips lead the way (like Andy Vincent told me Saturday). Best throw of the night. Called it quits. Deadlfited the keg just see if I could. I've got a lot of work to do before I can move it around the yard. I didn't want to push it since tomorrow I've got to deadlift.

Waiting for the phone to ring so I can go play railroad all night.

Sometimes your the bug, sometimes you're the windshield. Today is a bug's life kind of day.

Walked to the gym, walked back to the motel.

It's days like this that make me wonder what in heck I'm doing. But I'm a bit puny, railroaded all night, and I have an acute case of vaginitis sillicoses (sand in my pooty pooh)

Well DVS shamed me into throwing in the muck. I'd already considered it but once he called me out on the facial book I had to make a show.

I still suck but I suck a bit less.

Hammer winds
5# practice impelement
20 or 30 each side focusing on long arms, hips out, hammer low
Braemar
16# shot
8 or 10 throws lots of rest in the middle
open stone
5 or 6
11 or 13 # ugly stone
GLIDE +1 South African. Glide felt good, SA not so much. Not sure of the distance since I did them in the dark and I was just mainly playing around

I think my last standing reverse went further than all but 1 full throw.

Le sigh.

Tried on the bench shirt a buddy loaned me. This is going to be intredasting.

Now it's time to eat pizza, calzone, and bread sticks AMRAP.

3-17

Happy Irish Stereotype Day!

Warm up
mowed the yard
sprayed myself in the eye with spray paint(not on purpose)
dislocates
TKE's
1 Burgener

Work

Military press

45-135-185-205 x2
Push press
225-245-265-275 x1
New lifetime PR. I just push pressed my previous lifetime PR for the split jerk. I tried 300. I was going to go 295 but I figured if I could get that I could get 300 so if you're going to be a bear, be a grizzly bear. 300 felt good and it came off my chest real easy on with the leg drive, but I just didn't have the power to force the lockout. 300 overhead looks possible for this year.

Stripped the bar, it fell out of the rack, nearly broke a mirror, and scared the doo doo out of everyone including me.

Walked out.

Drinking a Murphy's stout as a recovery drink.

The highlight of the day was after I hit 265 I turned around and this young guy looks a bit shocked. He said "I wasn't expecting that. I thought you were going to do a front squat." The thick little gal with him was cracking up at the look on his face.

Bodyweight is 221#.  Not happy about this.

Some throws. This stuff is exhausting.
5 standing throws - step out
5 standing throws - reverse
5 full throws GLIDE NINJA!

Cut it short for a b'day gig.

Having trouble with my right knee when I load up. Having trouble getting into a comfortable position. Reverse felt AWKWARD! Glide felt not ungood and I got a few more feet than my best standing throw.

Not unhappy.

Sick. Damn allergies.

12# shot
5 standing throws
5 step outs
5 full reverse 31' best
5 glide 36' best
5 MSA 32'-33' best

Some really really bad throws a few not ungood throws. Flaws throughout. And they changed every throw.

Starting the Speed and Power Block from Matt Vincent's book Training Lab.

It's not really where I'm used to going in my training but I think it's what I need to focus on my throws. I'm not real excited about this simply because this type of training is real new to me and the blocks are longer than my normal training cycle but I'm going to trust in Matt's training plan. I've got a games at the end of week 5 and another at the end of week 15. So I can gauge my progress.

3-26
warm up
walk to gym
a mess of stuff

squats
45x10
135x3
185x3
225x3
255 9x3

bench
45x10
95x3
120x3
140 10x3

goodmornings
65x10 85x10 95x10
down slow explode up
superset with
dips
3x10 bodyweight

8 sprints on the sidewalk in front of the gym
timed the first one as a 20" sprint and sprinted to that location for the other 7
rest periods were longish since I'm fat and out of shape

walk back to the motel

Some notes.  This looked way easier on paper than it actually.  I kept my ego in check and cut the percentage back but I failed to factor in that my max was a low bar power squat off a box and my current squat plan is a high bar olympic squat.  It wasn't heavy just not fast.

I don't know if I like Matt Vincent as much as I did before.  That was kind of hard on a brother.
