Im feeling grouchy and irritable...

I need to find a meathead gym that doesnt allow smedium shirts, metrosexuals and wannabe male strippers.

It'd also be nice if I could lift without feeling like Im in the f***in club because of the too loud music.

Busy and kind of tired from work, plus not eating much lately so as not to overload the kidney until I get the stone out on Wednesday...had about 30 minutes to get in something today before the gym closed...

Not exactly a workout, but after 1-1/2 weeks of doing
nothing but eating pain meds every day, laying about the
house in a warm bath and doing not much at all, this
was a workout;

Saturday;
Assemble and paint 5 beehive boxes, assemble 20 frames.
Load up and drive to the homestead.
Check out my dad's old garden tractor, spend 2 hrs
identifying problems, taking apart a few pieces. Lots of
rust, a few black widows, no scrapes, cuts or bites...ok,
some mosquito bites but they dont count.
PWO meal; homemade veggie soup and lemonade.

Sunday;
Open and inspect all the hives. Put on the two boxes I
prepared from the day before. Realize I have to catch a
swarm, set up a catch box. Rehydrate.
Finish diagnosing the garden tractor. Grunted and sweated
for a few more hours breaking things loose, filing,
scraping, cleaning, turning wrenches and such. Test
drive, success.
PWO meal; Grilled salmon, steak, zucchini squash,
bellpeppers, potato salad, limeade.

If that dont make me throw far, nothing will.

15 or so stone throws at ~80%

15 Sheaf throws (17lb) at ~80%, just focusing on getting it to fall behind me and peak in the right spot, height dont matter much if I keep bouncing it off the uprights.

Had a great time at Charleston 9/17. Good bunch of guys
and impressive competitors. At 250lbs I was still the
little guy! haha!
I got a PR in the LWFD, 55'11". yay!

Felt great the day after, but by Monday my shoulders were
starting to feel sore. By Wednesday my left shoulder was
hurting a little and today it's still hurting and a bit
stiff. Ergo, no working out for me until I feel better.
WTF? DOMS in the rotator cuff? Light stretching, ice/heat
and ibuprofen only.

Maybe I should just stop working out all together. It's
been since before Charleston that I have even darkened
the door of the gym or practiced throwing. But I did
really well at Scotland County this weekend, finished the
year on a high note.

PRs in HWFD and LWFD (thanks John Allen for the
coaching!)
I never thought Id get close to 60' in the LWFD but I
pulled it out of somewhere and threw a 59'7.5" !
HWFD, my goal for the year was to reach 25'...I got a
27'1" !
Turned the caber all three times.
Did decent in everything else but hammer....still tugging
on it, c'est la vie.

While at the games my brothers wife had her baby, so that
was a bonus.


And last but not least, I got to hang out with a great
bunch of guys for a crisp October day and had a downright
stupid fun time. All the PRs and numbers and competition
was great, but the best part was just hanging out with my
friends(old and new) all weekend. Just good people and
I'm fortunate to be able to step on the field with all of
them.

mostly did a lot of being irritable with the dump I lift

I like reading the different training logs, I sometimes LOL because I am doing NOTHING like everybody else. 

My workouts are are less than 20 minutes in the gym and less than an hour when throwing. 

Usually train alone, don't like getting chatty in the gym.  I may post a training log one day (when I have some respectable numbers) but until then, I'll just keep reading everybody else's.

Im just working a lot, and spending time "recuperating."
I'd like to say it's because Ive been deer hunting too
much, but that would be a lie, it's work.
I did make it into the gym Monday and did some incline
presses and some lat pulldowns. ugh...

On the plus side, my 16 lb shot arrived via UPS this

Went to VA last week to do a little hunting. Climbing
those hills was certainly fun.



Starting a 3 day a week lifting, 2 throwing practice
routine for about the next 5 weeks. Emphasis on
increasing cardio and stamina. We'll see how well I can
stick to it. Work and hunting season do take their toll
on the clock.

better on the joints than the treadmill, IMO.

Havent really done any Clean and presses since high school so, it's ugly....

Started out with squats and old times

After that we did some leg presses on the machine 3x8 and talk about mutual friends and family. He is a teacher and now works with my high school football coach from 20 years ago, small world.

Then some lat pulldowns for a few sets, inevitably politics comes up....He was doing calf raises between sets. I wasnt since I was blessed with good Cornish genetics and he is a straight up guido who needs to do calf raises.

Ended with some rowing at which point the topic was still politics but now he had also moved on to saying I looked like a Viking in a long boat so I got that going for me. Approve

Afterwards, Denny's ultimate omelette and talking about old times again.....all in all a good evening. Big smile

I was visiting a buddy's regular place. The gym didnt allow chalk.
Neither does my regular place, they keep yelling at me and threatening to cancel my membership. That's ok, I'm gonna "... take that deal 'n' crawfish..." then go to a real gym soon.LOL

I can see that if I want to make any progress the "brah" gyms won't cut it.

This is the place I usually go to years ago before I left Charlotte... used to be decent, now it's a dump. They have sternly warned me about chalk and "dropping" weights....shit, Im not even strong and they cant handle it, I'd love to see some real weight get moved there. LOL Theyd freak out.

It's definitely got the "club" atmosphere...i.e. obnoxiously loud music and no shortage of tools. So for your amusement and entertainment;

I'm just making do with it....was a little desperate to find a gym when I moved back to Charlotte, had a buddy who lifts here and its only $20 a month but this is not a growth environment. Not for me at least. Not any more.

Not to get all sentimental and such, but since I started throwing, my time lifting has become what it used to be, and that's a wonderful thing. Reading the training logs is also inspiring and motivational and informative. Glad I didnt wait until I was too old to get into this, but certainly wish it had been sooner. Approve

I got to play with the Bs. It was good to see old friends and meet some new ones. No PRs but it felt great to be out there trying to hang with 20 somethings and doing pretty well at it, considering. Got a good baseline of what I need to get to for MWC and to move to As. In a word; reps.LOL Still, it's all good.

Hammer : arms need to stay long behind you, let your biceps brush your nose as they go by your face and lean back.
Caber : carry caber belly button high and throw sooner. You take to long to plant and pull. This allows the caber to get to far in front of you.
WFD : try releasing off the right foot. This allows the hips to stay in it longer.

When you come into the second turn, when the left foot lands keep the body weight on the right foot and turn the ankle out. Do a search on Francis Brebner throwing WFD to see an extreme example.

After loading up and driving 7 hours from Charlotte to Engelhard, NC, I grabbed a 4hr nap. Woke at 3:00am Saturday.  Drove another 1-1/2 miles to the waterfowl impoundment and unloaded the canoe, the decoys, the shotgun and the ammo box. Put on the neoprene waders... Dragged all of that 1/4 of a mile across grass to the canal, paddled 300 yards, set the decoys and waited for another hour or so until sunup. Endured mosquitoes and chilly dampness for another 5 hrs. Saw some black ducks and a teal or two, but no shot available...around 11am, shot a swan.Smile Loaded the decoys and the swan, paddled back to the bank, drug the canoe and gear plus the 25 pound bird and 20 pounds of swampwater back to the car. Loaded up, drove back to the campsite, hung all my stuff up to dry and took a nap. Woke with cramps. Stretched, walked it out. Drove home.

Quickest swan hunt ever. Happy to unofficially end hunting season on a high note.

Spent the weekend swinging a bushaxe, some folks calls it a sling blade or a Kaiser blade, I call it a bush axe. Anyways, I swung that bush axe and cleared off some trees and saplings and whatnot back at the hunting grounds.
Carried some bags of concrete and lumber and roofing material. Put a roof over my friends shed where we do blacksmithing. 
Mashed in some carapils and carafoam malts, refrigerated the extract to boil and pitch later this week. 
May ride the mtn bike this week....then Jacksonville this weekend. 

No lifting, too much ache and tightness. Foam roller and pressure point massages and stretching this week.

Got back on the mtn bike for the first time in a long time. Not for just a little glide around the neighborhood, either. Did about 8 miles of trails. 
Wow. My cardio absolutely sucks. Legs had no problem whatsoever but I was sucking wind like a fish. LOL Coulda been the extra 30 pounds of insulation.
Having been out of trailriding for a while, I had slow response times and a clumsy feel, lucky I didn't eat dirt at any point.. The eye-body coordination is not there like it was way back. Going to do a little more of this, think it'll be good for the CNS and the heart/lungs. Springs coming anyway, need to shed the winter coat...and it's more funner than an elliptical.

Trying to teach my younger two the joy of bikes and that type of thing and they have one of those little push scooter things with the tiny 5 inch wheels.  I just grabbed that and started down the drive and almost got my health deductible out of the way early in the year.  Slow response time and clumsy was understatement.  I verbally instructed from there with pointing and sitting.

I spent a few years trail-riding nearly everyday.  Didn't ever compete or anything (just wasn't my thing)but had crazy endurance and I rode/ride because it's just damned FUN. I think that's important in any kind of sport or extracurricular. 
Now that I am back in the Charlotte area there are plenty of trail parks to go play at. When I was in Charleston it was...not boring, but certainly not very challenging when everything is flat.

I am glad I got a good bike that can handle the extra me that I have acquired these past few years. LOL If I can drop 20 lbs by Spring I should be good to go.

Swinging a bush axe and operating a chainsaw for 3 hours=core, forearms, etc... much soreness today.

Made a barrel of charcoal afterwards...4 hours tending the fire.

Ok, so let's call it a deload week this past week or so.LOL No lifting, no throwing.

Nevertheless, I've been doing a lot of Spring garden/yard work and riding the bike. Still have beehives to move and prep for the spring bloom.

Yesterday, after spending a couple of hours fighting with a tiller I figured what the hey, I been putting stones out of the garden, might as well work on some shot drills. So I did a few braemars, some 1/2 South Africans and a few fulls. Felt good. I think I may have needed the break just to reset the system.
