First up....this is all Carlos Borges Fault.
OK, so after Watsonville, and under the influence of Bellhaven and
tobacco, Carlos and Laurie and I got to talking, and Carlos came up with
the idea of having an annual Duke Kamehameha Ha'island Games. I
thought it was brilliant SO.
I am officially making the July 17th practice at Shaffer Field into the:
------ First Annual Duke Kamehameha Ha'island Games-----
1. required attire is kilt and Hawaii'an shirt.
2. There will be the inaugural Ha'island Games Discus competition
3. We'll throw some subset of the usual stuff as well.
4. I think I gots me a line on a 35 pound anvil. If so, we're gonna throw it..
5. I'm gonna bust hump and find us a case of Kona Brewing Company Coconut Porter (yes, it really exists)
6. with luck we will be treated to the first annual performance of the Duke Kamehameha Ha'island bagpipe and ukelele duet.
7. In order to pack THIS much insanity and fun into the day, we're gonna start at noon instead of 1:00. (which is when the practice was scheduled)
If you want a shirt, Carlos says mebbe he can bang one out real quick-like, so let me know. You KNOW this is going to be a keeper.
Bra, this is nothing but Island-Style Epic. BE THERE.
PM if you wanna hang in Santa Cruz with the homies.

Alan,
We gotta get this title corrected.
The First Annual Duke Kahanamoku H'Island Classic
It'll be an early celebration of Duke Kahanamoku's birthday (August 24th). For those that don't know, Duke was a five-time Olympic gold medalist and is considered the godfather of surfing.
------------- Cheers,
Carlos

I just read about him on Wikipedia and on a website about him. Interesting guy, and a hell of a natural athlete.

Great day!
John Davis came out and threw HUGE stones. Not "big", I said HUGE.
Took my practice 15.8 pounder for a ride out to 60 feet Took my practice 21.5 Braemar out there to damn near 50.
The Inaugural Duke Kahanamoku Discus Classic:
John Davis... 189 feet with the 2K Josh Grace, fresh from a 5th place at the Masters Worlds: 157 feet with the 2K Yours Truly.... about 120 feet with the Masters 1.5K
Wayne Shaffer, who owns and operates Shaffer Park came out and tossed a few Masters 1k discuses out to about 110..Nice, Wayne!
We had a mess 'o new throwers out, that's always great. John spent some time with several of the developing throwers in the stones and I noticed big improvement with several of them, especially Garrett Nichols. It was good to welcome Rich Bergland back to the Bay Area!
Kalle Beck show me how to load Atlas Stones, which was a blast. A bunch of guys and gals had a good time loading stones and flipping tires. Tony Salerno is mean with a throwing spear, BTW.
Carlos brought his Rolling Thunder, which is frustrating as Hell... .. Bethany Owen taught a mess of us guys the meaning of the word "Humility" with that nifty toy.
Josh Grace showed us how it's done, by going 17 feet in WOB with the 42'er.... We finished up with a great barbeque...and passed the can to raise about $200 for Sienna House, a home in Santa Cruz for young girls in crisis pregnancies, that Wayne Shaffer is on the Board for.
Everybody had a good time...I saw Phil Strong with a sh**-eating grin all day long. I got two great tips in WOB from Carlos and Josh, and basically...
Life Is Good.

Hey-
I've been to Duke's barefoot bar and surfed the same shoreline with a long board... got photos to prove it too.
Can I get in?

A first needs to be followed by a second, and so on. I'm in baby! Throwers games rock.
Come on out Kevin. We'd love to have you join the fun.
And, by the way, the Irish Car Bomb cupcakes are my new addiction.

Carlos

Alan, l would have thought that either you or Carlos would know that you can't have an "annual" event until it's been done again a year later! There's no such thing as a "First Annual."

Wally,
Not only was it a first annual but every winning throw was a "Hawaiian-themed Highland Game World Record". I am now the "Hawaiian-themed Highland Game 49 year old throwing the 56 for height World Record holder" with a mighty 12' toss.

So my 55' 3" with the T&F 25 pound weight is the ..
wait for it...
"Hawaiian-themed Highland Game 54 year old throwing the Track and Field 25 pound Weight for Distance with one hand while wearing mismatched socks World Record holder"
I'm making myself a certificate and putting it up on the wall of my office.

Perfect. I'll scrawl Don Ho's signature in the lower right hand corner
and we'll call it good.
