I am trying to get to about 5 this year and going to try to bump it up to 8 next. But I would like to know how many other competitors PROS and JOES do annually.

I know pros do a lot more. As for me, I did 1 my first year, 2 my second, 5 my third (to qualify for MWC), and 7 last year (including MWC).
So far, I'm looking at about 6-8 this year: travel time, travel expenses, and other committments all figure in. But if I can't make it to as many games, I still get out and practice.

I like the fact that the NTH put on a few games a year and that affords me the oppurtunity to got to the DFW area and throw. Also here in Oklahoma we have two regular games. So 5 next year for sure. Trying to make it to Rio Grande next year and possibly one either in MO or AR.
Nice thing about living in the center of OK we are only about 8-10 hours from a lot of stuff.

My first few years as a pro I did ~20.
Since my competitive retirement in 2006, I do 10-12.

It wasn't that bad, and most of the top guys still do about that every year.
IIRC, Larry did 44 one year. I know Ryan and Francis have had around that, if not more, as well...

WOW you guys are seriously some of the top athletes on the planet. not many people can go balls out 44 comp days a year. Considering football players get up to 16 a year with playoffs. Their comps only being 3 hours at the most you guys doing it 20-40 times per year at 8 hours a day. Damn mad props.

To chime in for the women folk with Sammy, I did 15 last year and should have as many again this year.

Plan for 2011:: Ardenwood, Woodland, Costa Mesa, Watsonville, Enumclaw, Monterey, Pleasanton, Santa Cruz, Ventura ... 9 Games
all Masters 50-59 class, except my very first two Games in 2007, when I threw in the C's.

2007 - 1 2008 - 11 2009 - 10 2010 - 11 2011 - 5 with 10+ more scheduled

I'm gonna assume he(they for that matter) don't go "balls out" in every games. For example, Brock is a 90+ lwfd thrower, but if 75' is second place, I assume he doesn't have the pedal to the floor for all three throws.

Alan and anybody else interested, after you compete at Enumclaw why don't you come on over to Spokane the next weekend 8/06, in eastern Washington and compete in our Spokane Highland Games. We'll be on the huge, flat main field with 4 trigs, and will start at 8:30 AM and finish at noon. At 1:30 PM you'll get to watch the IHGF AM Worlds for men and women. Ryan and Francis will be there. Should be lots of fun.

I would go to Spokane, but I don't even have the money to get to all the games I'm already signed up for.

I asked Francis Brebner this question while we were sitting around at Costa Mesa. I'll let him answer it here, but my jaw was on the ground when he gave me a number.

I wish I had an unlimited supply of funds, a new truck, and kids that thought watching Daddy was much more fun than going to 6 flags or camping, or the train museum. If that was the case between the Highland Games, highlanders and strongman stuff I'll bet I would do 20 different events this summer, there is so much I wish I could do. But due to the above factors I decided to pick one each month, but I already cheated and did 2 in May.

No? OK, Craig... so Francis told me that during his heyday, he'd do about FIFTY Games a year.
He'd do the whole season in Scotland, 2-3 Games a week. Then he'd come to the USA and do the last month or two of the USA season and then he'd fly to New Zealand and do Games down there.
He also said that in retrospect, he should have taken 2-3 months off in between seasons, if he'd done that he'd still be throwing, but instead of that, he was working hard in the gym to stay strong during the entire off-season.

Yea, that's what I figured and why earlier in the thread I said:
