Hi everyone, my name is John Davis and this is my training log. I have never trained for the Highland Games, but I have competed a couple of times. I was a shotput (67-5) and discus (202-0) thrower. I am now ready to train specifically for the games. I am not sure that I can throw the stones as well as I have in the past-60-3 Open and 47-5 Braemar, but I am sure that I can improve vastly in the weights and hammers.

Stats- 6-2, 262lbs

Best Bench-510
Best Squat-675x5
Best Power Clean 407
Best Deadlift-660

All these lift PRs were done 8-9 years ago. After undergoing an ulnar nerve release surgery a couple of years ago, I am finally ready to throw and lift again. I did one games for fun this year on my birthday on a whim and I realized how much fun it was and how much practice I need. Hopefully good things will come.

LWFD Practice
3 standing throws

Hopefully next practice I can get some video. Very wet and slippery. Tried to just get some technical reps in between rain showers. Looks like it will be another week plus before the rain lets up.

Stretch, back roll

Front Squat
135 x 5
225 x 5
315 x 3
365 x 3
405x 1 x 3 (pretty easy and quick, lots more there)

Straight Leg Deadlifts
315 x 5
405 x 5
495 x 5 (felt strong)

Donkey Calf Raise-Single Leg
400 x 15 x 3 (more of a stretch than a lift-too light but that is as high as it goes)

Plate twists

Stretching, Back roll

Pretty happy, hit all the weights I wanted and there is still more in the tank. I think my old man strength is starting to kick in.

Threw a 16lb indoor shot in a parking lot under the freeway. Gotta improvise when it is raining all the time.

8-Stands -53ft

4-Glide(because sometimes the stones suck) 54ft (happy to be farther than my stand but I have a little work to do)

6-Full throws-59ft Easy rhythm

Not bad considering I rushed through it before someone could kick me out or park a car in my way.

Easy Lifting Day

Power Snatch (from floor, caught standing straight up)

135 x 5
185 x 4
205 x 4 x 2 (Quick and Easy)

(pull ups and curls super set)

Pull ups
12,15,9

DB Alt. Curl
70 x 8
75 x 8 x 2

Lifting

Hang Clean
135 x 5
225 x 5
315 x 2
335 x 2
355 x 1
365 x 1

Deadlift
405 x 5
495 x 3
565 x 1
615 x 1

Crazy thing happened-it didn't rain yet so I grabbed my weights and headed to the park

HWFD
stands, 1 turn, practice cast, 2 turns- 31-35 - more there but my back was a little tight and I shut it down

Trying to keep it simple

WFH
Threw over 11ft swing set-8x each throw 3-4ft over

LWFD
Back loosened up a bit so I took a couple 2 turns 65-68

All in all I feel I am on the right track. If the weather would cooperate I would love to throw more and lift a bit less.

Its awesome to see you competing in the games.  I've followed your track and field career, and am very impressed with your throwing. Look forward to competing on the same field, sometime.

Thanks that means a lot coming from you. I would love to compete on the same field as you--I have a lot of work to do before now and then but I hope it happens. I know you don't want to give away secrets but I want to know conceptually in your WFD do you feel that you accelerate the weight on the downward orbit or on the upward orbit and drive?

-------------
John Davis

Posted By: Sean Betz
Date Posted: 3/22/11 at 1:27am
I try to accelerate it when it is at the very bottom of the orbit.  Its when I really feel the weight pull against me.  I try to lower my hips at the same time.  Thats when I get the bigger throws.  I seem to scoop the weight.  I just can't carry the weight out wide like a discus.  I seem to have no power that way. Probably not the ideal way of doing it, but it works ok for me.

lol, this isn't T&F.  I have never had someone not give me all the advice I wanted and more when I asked.  We just don't roll that way in HG.  I think we all want to see big throws, and I would gladly help someone beat me if my advice would make a difference.  I've done it many times, and have seen it done many times, on the field.

After this week I am going to tweek my training so that I am in good throwing shape. More throwing, lighter quicker lifting. Try to get a little quick twitch stimulation. Also going to work on gaining weight-would like to be 275. This has always been tough for me. When I threw my my stone and shot put PRs I weighed 245. As I get older my metabolism has slowed so I can put on a little weight but I do not want to lose the athleticism that has helped me throw far in the past. All in all I am having a great time training. It is hard to believe that 2 1/2 years ago my half my throwing hand was numb, severely atrophied and on its way to paralysis through nerve damage. Yeah modern medicine and surgery!!!

Shot felt the best it has in a decade. There is more there but I didn't want to beat my hand up. I am just going to throw stones from now on in.

Hammer felt ok, I think this event is really going to start coming together for me.

385 x 1 (PR)
405-miss
It is high enough for most people to catch but I am a thrower not a lifter so I am not going to kill myself or get wide or low catching the weight. I really only care about the pull.

Deadlift from 6" box

495 x 3
565 x 2
615 x 1
665 x 1
705 x 1

Felt really good about the way I handled 700. Hopefully I can get it off the floor in a couple of weeks. Working on staying back more. I use too much lower back most of the time.

Bench

135 x 6
225 x 5
315 x 5
345 x 5
375 x 6

Its coming back little by little. Felt good about the effort after doing all of my other lifts. It would be cool, for ego purposes only to do 500 again.

Overall great day- looking forward to getting some good throwing in this week.

Throwing

22lb Braemar-45+ felt good
16lb Open-59+ No finish on all 3 over 58 (frustrating)
HWFD- Felt heavy and was a little off
LWFD-68ish Felt very rotational not linear enough
Light Hammer- Easy throws- New boots and blades
Caber- Felt good, getting better

I was a little scared to see how my back would do. It has been hurting all week so all I have done since Tuesday was stretch and take lots of Advil. It still hurts but it has stretched out well. It was great to hit the stones well today. My open stone is still a little off. I am having trouble getting it in my neck right to be able to smack it at the finish. I hit 55 on a standing throw and I know if I can finish off a full like that it should go big. Other events were ok but I need to keep on working on them. Hopefully my back will get better and big things will come.

Matt, I am pretty sure your 26lb stone throw was a record of some sort. I think you are going to do quite well at the next level whenever you go up but I think you might win an amateur world championship first.  Thanks for the tip about the jav shoes- I actually bought some high jump shoes that will work out well. Good luck this weekend and I hope you break some records-even if they are mine.

Ha!  As a former, significantly less-accomplished shot putter and discus thrower myself, when I first threw the HWFD I observed that:

"The HWFD does not really feel like a throwing event, but more like a hazing ritual."

I still feel the same way.  However, I am sure you will improve dramatically if you actually practice the event.

Keep up the great work.  I am reading your training log with interest.  I love this line from last week:

405-miss
It is high enough for most people to catch but I am a thrower not a lifter so I am not going to kill myself or get wide or low catching the weight. I really only care about the pull.

Great lifts btw.

I am not sure if I was pumped up because Rusty threw the open stone farther than me or my body was embarrassed to be dwarfed standing next to Dan McKim, but I rolled out of bed today feeling big and strong. Stepped on the scale- 270.8 and headed the gym and this happened-

Foam/pvc roll and stretch

Bench
135 x 5
225 x 5
315 x 5
385 x 3
415 x 4
455 x 2
475 x 1 -went up quick

Rack Pulls-from knee

225 x 5
405 x 3
585 x 3
675 x 3
765 x 2  followed by a couple dry heaves
855 x 1
All pretty easy- 855 was the max I could fit on the bar and I thought that the bar would break the way it was bending so I only did one rep.

Stretch/PVC Roll

Left the gym before I thought I was invincible and hurt myself.

I was thinking about this today, mostly because I'm jealous of you guys.

But if you're going to break the record, you really should make it the world record since Cory Martin threw 62'7" in his only game.  The catch was that he threw "pro" with us that day.

So John, Matt, Spencer, etc.... just throw it like 64' imo.

I agree. Oldfield threw the 17lb stone 63 feet so really you need to throw 65+ with the 16 to be comparable. The Braemar is the true test of a man anyways.

The games was unsanctioned so that none of the marks really count which kind of deflated the intensity. We threw the same stones as Sacramento last weekend. Never hit the open stone- 4 throws over 44 within 5 inches in the Braemar.

15.8 Open Stone- 60-10
25lb LWFD-71-4 (73-10F)
Discus-189-0
WOB-13-0
LHammer-106-8

Awesome day, group of throwers and facility. Glad to get some demons out in the stones. There is still more there. They waited to tell me that the open stone was a tad under 16 Doh!. The LWFD was a small 25lb weight with an equally small triangular handle. Carlos swears we can get 2+ more feet with the 28 because of the length. I still am missing a couple of things here, but it is getting closer. Had a 73-10 foul because I stepped on the line, which threw me off on my last throw because I was thinking about not fouling and I missed the front. Discus in a kilt was awesome, 189-0 in a tailwind is not too shabby. WOB was the disappointment of the day. Bad technique... In hammer the ground was way too hard to use blades so I was off balance every throw because I have been training with blades only. 106+ isn't too bad though. I know I am good for 120+. Its getting closer!!!

Easy quick lifting. Had a long hot week at work so I was not able to get much training in this week. I rolled my ankle 2 weeks ago and it has been sore ever since so I was glad that my stones went well last weekend. Be nice to get some marks like that in a legit comp. I feel like I am on the verge. Very frustrating day. Couldn't get a good handle on the stones, never felt comfortable withe the weights, couldn't find a good spot to dig in in the hammers (I did have a throw where the handle hit the cage and explode in air, and still went 105), WOB kinked on just about every throw, sheaf I threw very high but just outside of the standards on my throws at 25, and by the time caber rolled around I was just a mental wreck. I have lost about 15lbs in the last 3 weeks due to work- sucks being a grown up.

John, I feel kinda funny making suggestions when you throw SO much farther than I do, but that's never stopped me before.

I watched your video, and it looked pretty much exactly like how you threw at Shaffer field. I missed your LWFD at Monterey, or maybe my brain wasn't engaged.  So here's my thought.....get a little lift out of the legs in the front. When you deliver the weight you still have a lot of bend in your knees.   You also are throwing...kinda....line drives.

I saw you throw discus...you do the lift-hop thing at the front of the ring and the discus has tons of height for the flight. OK, you probably can't do that with 28 pounds, but maybe finishing with "lift" will help you get some height.

Watch your video.  Now watch these..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4k6pbsVLEg

Look at Ryans finish. He's blocking with his left leg and it's almost straight.  His chest is up. BIG lift, and he throws that thing into the sky.

Same thing here. Look how high the thing flies.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzsoIVO7g94

Craig Sinclair throws like this. I know that not everybody does this, but Craig does. HBIII doesn't, for example. Here's Craig.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TThVSBPES-E

This is a nice video from Hapy because it shows a number of the Big Guys puttin' it out there. There are different styles to this stuff

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TILGZfkFoYs

You throw kinda like HB3.  Maybe incorporate some of Craig and Mike P. in there and see if the lift at the front doesn't help you, maybe??

As a complete and total aside, are you on your toes at the end of the WOB standing toss?  I don't remember from the Duke K. event,  and I missed seeing you at Monterey,  but make sure to get the last little bit out of that triple extension.

OK enough for my mindless arrogance.   See you at Pleasanton!
