I assumed that he was just clarifying that his OH training
that day was jerks, not presses.
Which, btw, I really appreciate. Nothing gets me more
than someone calling a jerk a press.

Extremely impressive lifting for sure! One question though - wouldn't jerks be considered a DE Lower (or possibly ME Lower in this case) movement as opposed to a ME Upper? Wouldn't you say a Jerk (as opposed to a Push Press) is more of a leg exercise than an upper-body one? Sorry for the semantics, but I am curious about your thoughts on this.
BTW, your stone results should be HUGE with this combo! How much bounce was there on the Bench?

Ping-
no bounce on the bench just touch and go. I am flirting
with doing a raw powerlifting meet and I want to have an
idea of where I am.
Jerks would probably be considered a lower movement
however for my training I rotate my OH movements week to
week. next week I will hit strict press, then push
press, then jerks.
MY typical upper breakdown is 4 movements. horizontal
push, vertical push, vertical pull, horizontal pull. If
I feel like doing accessories I will do a couple.
yesterday I did some cardio and stretching. boring.
today i am going to do some strongman event training and
throwing.

Matt, I've had some of the same things with my upper back
that I think you're talking about. Gives me some
shoulder and pec pain and even some tingling in my hand
from time to time. I've found that putting my shoulder
blade on the corner of a wall or rolling on a baseball
are the best! Hurts like crazy, but forces that knot to
release and relax.
It's much like a cheap deep tissue massage, but I feel
relief instantly. As I do it more often and essentially
"stretch" the muscles in the area, it leaves for good.
Just an idea. You might have already thought of it or
are already doing it.

Morning throwing:
My brother was around this morning so we had a chance to
do a bit of tossing.
OS 54' felt good never really went after one.. my right
hand is still jacked from NTHKG..
hw: 39' things are still missing I can throw a 1 turn
about 38' so I amnot getting any acceleration on my
finish...like the throw just stops at the front. I will
fix this and become amazing
lw: everything over 80' best of 84' felt good fast and
with reverse.
sheaf: 18# bag up over 32'6" powerline 3 times in a row
and hit it another 3.
all and all a good day plus got to teach my brother how
to spin for OS.... great.

3*19*2011
NAHA games in Louisiana:
What a great time this contest was. I got a chance to
compete with an amazing elite class of athletes. The
Elite class featured ME, Andy Vincent, Andrew
Durniat(second at mighty mitts and all around BAMF), Ross
Love(4th place @ mighty mitts grip contest), Tom
Emlander(WABDL world record holder) Mark Cummings(LA Nas
state chair), and Scott Stephan (new to the strength game
but very talented)
With that said it was quite a great time with some
amazing numbers accomplished.
event 1: 135# OS
this thing was quite alot of fun to throw however the
effort does not make it go anywhere. Andy won with a 13'
throw, i think.
event 2: farmers drag medley(this was what our class was
all dreding) 220# farmers on 2" handles, 310 farmers,
400# chain sled drag all for 80" each.
Ross love took first with 1 min 42 sec
Andrew Durniat second with time of 1 min 44
Andy finished third 1 min 47 sec.
the rest of us did not finish.
event 3:breamar 25# loaf of bread
Andy 1st 41' and change
me 2nd 38' change
then rest followed, I am still plagued that I can not
manage to beat Andy in the damn breamar.
event 4: OH medley
six implements:
155 barbell w/ tractor tires
175 2" axle
185 barbell
225 square axle on metal tractor wheels
290 log
323 2" axle
event 5: hwfd
me 1st 41'10" this is a 1' pr
andy: 40' and change huge throw for him... (its learning)
rest of field
( still not finishing through the weight hit the left leg
hard and it was coming back on release instead of the
right moving forward. which means despite a 1' PR there
is more in the tank technically)
event 6: 555# axl DL for max reps
andy 6
ross 6
tom 4 it think
then i think a big traffic jam of us at 2
All and all it was a great time getting to share the
field with a group of guys of this level. Lots of time
to talk shop and make fun of each other. apparently not
training any of the strongman events has not helped me
get better at them, OH WELL. This was a good time and I
came out with a PR in the HW, I got to throw an amazing
open stone he has which is now mine... (1st throw no
warmup 55+) I am good and sore and I cant wait till
thistle next weekend.
Big numbers are going to happen at thistle....

Matt, I like that you are also a fan of the steam room. I've found that combining steams with the ancient practice of Ishnaan (cold showers) is the key to life and vitality... also the closest cure to the hangover that I've yet discovered. The Rat Pack was obviously on to something even back in the 50's.

chest, thigh, calf, tricep. i think..
Finally things are feeling better.
ribs still are ok but they are about 90%. hand still is
giving me trouble, this one is just going to take a long
time. I have been throwing in a glove that keeps the
fingers together. I am hoping to not have to throw with
it in contest.
yesterday was short day but im throwing more today:
os: 17# everything over 55 and best of 57'
hwfd: 5 one turns best of 38' 5 fulls and about 41'
( I am missing something major here, I need to get it
together.)

Lots of throwing lately, looking forward to getting back
from this trip and back in the gym like I'm supposed to
be. All nagging injuries other than the hand seem to
have dissipated. I need to hit the next 4 week lifting
cycle hard and keep the throwing volume up.
throwing today:
OS: 17# os
5 x standing worked to 51'
5 x fulls hit 4 of 5 over 55' best of 57'
still having to use this stupid glove for training.
hwfd:
5 x 1 turns working on finish and height!!!
5 x fulls about 80% (sink, sink, throw) 4 at 40'
10 x fulls 90+% avg 40' best of 42'
sheaf: 18#
10 x 32' 6"
avg 30'
just making sure it is dialed.
hammer winds 16#
something felt like it clicked with winds we will see
tomorrow.

Well thanks Myles, however I am still an amateur for the rest of this year. I was able to get a chance to share the field with a couple of accomplished throwers this past saturday in NC.
NC REN FAIRE: I just want to say thanks to Scott and the other judges for everything. The games were a lot of fun and quite the learning experience for me.
Breamar 26# : 44' 2" OS 16.08#: 59'5" HWFD: 45' LWFD: 85'10" ( we took some extra throws for fun, 89'10" also a 93'11" foul) 22# hammer: 105' felt heavy and slow sheaf 20#: 26' went to 30' hit bar all three times then over in extras wob: 17' standing
I had a great games with some big numbers, getting to throw with Wes, Frasure, and Chaffin was a great experience and lots of advice for my throws. Thanks guys.

I hope you realize those numbers would make the cut for
Bethlehem (well, except for not throwing a light hammer).
Aside from that, talk to the AD and get that stone
weighed. I don't currently have a record for a 26lb
Braemar stone, but I'm pretty sure that's it, and if the
stone can be verified the record's yours. That's
Guđmundsson territory.

well I will try and get that stone verified. Should not be to hard. Also Bethlehem is a straight pro game and I could not compete as an Am I think. However if this is not the case I am very interested.

Iron sport is quite different that metroflex in Arlington. They both have there place and are amazing gyms. Metroflex is a giant garage gym, dirty with tons of equipment piled in on top of it self.
Iron Sport is very clean, and essentially a commercial gym. Then you realize the quality of equipment in there along with two oly platforms with great bars, monolift, efs benches, 100# plates, heavy BDs, and monster squat racks.
I love Iron Sport and any opportunity i have to hangout wiht Steve and talk shop. Being able to travel like I have has been wonderful and I have made some great friends in the strength industry.

Yeah I love the atmosphere of MetroFlex. Bryan and crew are awesome. I feel like I need a Tetnus shot everytime I leave. Big heavy rusty weights and dumbbells.
I would rather train there than the "chrome and fern" place I train at now.
I can't say with certainty but I think the atmopshere of a place is just as important as the equipment they have.
Rendy's place in Ft Worth is awesome too. Lots of square footage.
But damn if they never have a XXXL T-shirt everytime I go in there.
Getting to Steve's place and York Barbell is on my bucket list.

Finally home...
4*17*11
drove this morning from Charlotte to Baton Rouge. All
around I had a great trip however 10 days is still a long
time to not be home. Luckily I don't have to leave for
this amount of time again till Iceland and that will be
OK.
I competed in the Loch Norman games this past weekend in
Charlotte NC. This is my first time to come out to the
games and it was a lot of fun. However we had some
interesting weather all day. The day started with
drizzling rain and temp of about 50. Then at lunch
decided to dump rain for an hour and have 40mph winds.
Then got really sunny and even heavier wind gusts. With
that said I managed to get 1st with the A's and have a
couple of decent throws. Always fun getting to compete
with guys like Wes Kiser and at the same time get to
watch a very talented Pro crowd throw.
weird order:
hwfd : 39'11" had a 42' lest line foul, after that I was
trying to fix the problem instead of just throwing.
lwfd: 83'5" with all 3 over 80'
OS 18.6#: 51'6" new field record
WOB: 15' i went in at 12' to work on spinning, then as we
hit 15' the rain started so we broke for an hour then
returned straight to 16' rythm was gone.
caber: 3 x 12:00 three of us were @ this score so we went
to pro caber and I got 12:00 to win
sheaf: 24' everything felt good just aim was off a bit I
was hitting upright @ about 32'
hammers: 105' 125'
all and all a good day. lots of fun.
looking forward to being home for a monthish and getting
some proper training in.

avg 115-120 easy throws
really trying to get that stretch and reach on the left

Good stuff man...
A question...do you feel like the cardio you described above is better/easier for a thrower to recover from as opposed to a straight run? It's getting hot here, and I've been juggling some conditioning stuff around in my nugget...stuff the North Texas Heavies could do after practice, etc.

i think steady state stuff is good... walking on treadmill
for say 30-60 min incline. Running however kicks the shit
out of my joints, so I dont see the point in further
fatiguing my joints. However the HIIT training I really
like it takes 30-45 min and burns more fat and does a light
full body workout that does not fatigue me at all.

Please describe. I hate the dreadmill I only do it because it is a necessary evil.

Do you do these in conjunction with your routine?
