Anyone out there have some useful information for someone who is going to start using the blades to throw with. Been practicing without them since September, and now am starting to lose footing on the ground and don't feel like I am getting enough torque. Any and all comments will be more than welcome (positive or negative).

I know most will probably disagree with me, but here goes. I would wait until you can go at least 80/100 comfortably in the hammers before using blades. Most people view blades as a magic silver bullet that automatically grants its user an additional 20-30 feet when used. IMHO, if you learn how to use the hips and leg-drive to comfortably reach 80/100 in cleats, you will better understand how to utilize your blades. I didn't start using the blades until I hit 90/110, and after a few weeks my PRs increased. Hope this helps.

I appreciate your input. Only threw LH in comp once (in 3 games, my only 3) and hit out to 83'. Been hitting near 90 in practice at times without them. Still in learning phase of it all.

BigScot - I'm rather new to throwing with blades. Actually one blade. Currently I am only throwing with one in my left shoe. (I'm right handed) I still don't feel comfortable throwing with two, but it works for me!

I never really thought about that. I might try that since I have a hip/knee problem anyways. Thanks for the suggestion, sir.

I don't know, I could never use them because I always felt like it was cheating. I know, they're allowed and accepted in competition, but it just feels to me like I'm using an unfair advantage, because the throw is using more than my own physical ability.

I can only assume that you don't use wrist wraps, tape, chalk, or tacky either then, right?
If you do, I would love to hear how you think blades are different from tacky. Please.

I appreciate everyone's input, but have to agree with Mr Smith here. Everyone that I have seen that pulls off great numbers throwing hammer uses blades, tacky, chalk, etc. Not really sure how using them could be considered cheating when I have seen them at every games I have been too and seen them in every video of the pros throwing as well. I have learned to this point to be able to use one boot on my right foot only. Still have not got enough practice with both at this time to get the whole balance, countersink weight away from hammer head and still manage not to fall forwards or backwards. I am pretty tall as it is, and it is a long way down to fall, not that I am opposed to falling, I just do it better without weapons mounted to the front of my shoes.

"I could never use them because I always felt like it was cheating"
I understand what you are saying and use to feel the same way.I still have great respect for anyone who throws far without blades.Similar to seeing a big squat without:suit, wraps, belt, briefs etc....
However throwing hammer, throwing hammer far and throwing hammer far with blades are three stages
of the same event.Having seen a few pro's in action
and the amount of force they generate I order blades and moved forward with my apprenticeship
of hammers.
As far a having trouble with blades,it takes time and practice.Focus on correct positions and don't be afraid to slow down your movements.Walk before you can run.
If your really looking for progress get to a training
clinic, post video here or even check out what Larry Brock offers for video coaching.

I know, it's silly to see it that way. but that's just how I feel about the blades. I will admit that the best throwers I know use them. I just don't, I'm stubborn that way. I don't mind using tacky, and chalk for the wfd if it's too warm out. But I just won't use the blades.

Can you explain why though? Especially since you'll use tacky?

No it's not if you aren't wearing blades. Blades on boots were made for this specific event. They have been used for generations. Not only are they NOT cheating, they are pretty much required if you want to throw worth a damn.
there is no friggin way in hell you are getting the most of your physical abilities when you are not using blades.
By that same reasoning go to using nothing but chuck taylors or barefoot for the other events because cleats, spikes etc are cheating as well.

Then you don't know how to use them.

I'm a lightweight and the best I've ever thrown LH without blades was low 80s... after a couple months with the blades, my best is 105 several times in practice and I know the potential for 110+ is there. I will never throw hammer without blades again.

pretty far off subject but this an arguement i've had with teammates if your Doing Cleans (hang or Power) and you can't get above 290 on grip strength alone, but you can clean 335 with wrist wraps. if you are dead set on lifting without the straps aren't you cheating yourself out of the work on the clean itself? its not like grip strength is the main aspect of the clean the explosion is. any thoughts if this is in the same realm of disscussion>?

I think it would fit in, though I couldn't tell you where I stand on that one.
