So I wanted to start a log to remind me how much more I need to workout.
Sheaf: 15ish throws WOB: 10ish throws 4 Good pulls at 15'
Lifting: first time in 2 months
Bench 275x2xPain 225x3 225x5x4
Barbell Russian Twists 135x8ea. way x3
Skull Crushers 90x8x3
I've had arm "injury" since Jan when I tried out for an indoor football team. It only really bothers me when I doing any pressing (push press is the worse) and stone. I was hoping 2months away from it would have helped. @ 225, the pain was bearable, and I wanted to finish the workout.

Threw at the Minn. this weekend for the "World" Am Championships. Got my butt kicked. Braemar - 41+ - 1st Open - 48+ - 4th HWD - 33+ - towards the bottom of 11 athletes LWD - 70+ - 9th Caber - 70 degrees - we only made it through 1 round, broke 2 cabers HH - 87+ - towards the bottom WOB - 14 - 6th. Finished 8th overall
After finishing 4th in the open stone, which I rely on heavily in big events to keep me at the top, I knew it was going to be a long day. This is the first time i've seen an AM event with 9 guys over 70 in LWFD. I've put a lot of work in the wfd this summer, and nothing to show for it. I'm excited for WOB for the first time, even though I didn't clear 15, all 3 pulls "had the height" so what i've been working on has helped, just have to work on the aim I guess.

Canoe trip. Lots of beer, lots of good food, lots of laugh(ab workout?). Canoed 8+ miles on sat. Decent core workout trying to keep 300+ pounds from tipping a canoe when paddling like a mad man.

9/5/10 East Coast Chamionships
OS: 52' F F   ; 1st HWD: 34' Pass Pass 5th LWD: F 62 68 4th HH: 81 87 95'2 1st PR LH: 108 119 113? 1st PR Caber: 60 50 60 10thish? 19' 140 no taper Sheaf: 33 2nd WOB: 13 3rd(tied with 4 or 5 guys
Overall: 2nd. 2.5 points back
Its obvious which event cost me the ECC title(again). I had my best 3 picks of the year, so I guess I can be happy about that. 15 degrees more would have probably got me enough points to win. I fouled a 53' and 55' stone throw. HWD was a 34' upper cut throw, so I know why my back didn't like it. Luckily Kate Mason and Sam Grammar were there to help. They patched me up and I survived the LWFD. When the Hammers rolled around, the back started to loosen up. Things started to click in the hammers, so i can't wait to throw them again. Since the last time I competed in the sheaf(June 21st) I have changed everything. I switched it up to throw more like HB3. My back didn't like that at all, so I had to switch back to my old technique. I cleared 33' for like the 10th time(with like 8 different forks) and had some awesome pulls at 35'. I just sucked in WOB. Back wasn't an issue. Was tied with Mike Dickens going into the event(i had more 1st places). He was clutch and i wasn't, thats about it.

9/11/10 Midwest Championships
Stone: 46' HWFD: 34' LWFD: 70' HH: 89' Caber 2:30 nasty stick for an AM Sheaf 20lbs: 28' WOB: 14
I competed in the "Pro/Am" with KO, CSmith, and Isaac Burchett. If you follow Craig's log, you know that him and KO where having a great time. It was hard for Isaac and I to stop laughing enough to throw far. We did pretty well for not being focused 99% of the time. It shows you the difference between 2 good pro's,. and 2 top 10 ams: They weren't being serious much at all, and Craig still beat us in the overall with passing in the hammer. I wouldn't trade the experience for anything though. Probably the most fun I've had throwing ever.
9/12-9/19 VACATION went on a house boat trip. Unless swimming, fishing, and drinking.... a lot .... count as working out, then I didn't anything.

My brothers and I are in a weight loss comp for $100. Weigh in is Dec 15th. I don't plan on winning, since they have no reason to keep their strength levels up while losing weight, but it will get me the motivation to get me going toward my goal weight of 280lbs.

10/2 Scarecrow Highlander (windy, cold, and drizzle all day)
Braemar(22lbs) 39'+
Farmers walk (500lbs 100') 39 seconds
Caber: 11:50, 11:55
Keg loader (5 kegs 175-250) low 30 seconds
WOB: 13
DL for reps (450lbs) 12 reps
Overall: 1st by default.
Extra: Open stone: 44' LWFD: 64
I figured I'd give this a try. Never concidered myself much of a "strongman" The farmers walk proved once again I have grip like a 10 year old girl. I had to sit it down once, and also kept me from trying to move faster. Keg loader was a learn on the fly since I've never done it before. DL reps I dreaded all day due to my back issues I've been having. I did 12 in about 25 seconds, so i figued I'd take a breather since i had 1min. should have known better. The extra events I did for fun, and wasn't really into it.
10/3
Went to the Pro Clinic in Ashland OH. Valenti and Andrian were the "talent" Learned a bunch of things in the weights I needed to figure out and few things in the hammers I will try. Got some ideas from Adrain in the glide to help me with my coaching high schoolers since I've pretty much forgot everything about it. Overall it was a good learnign experiance.

Indy Scottish Games Comp throws/(extras)
Braemar: 39 (41)
HWFD: 33 (35)
LWFD: 68
HH: 93
Caber: 11:00 in the qualifier/ 80 in the comp
Sheaf: 30'
WOB: 14
Farmers walk: 160lbs+ stones, 235'
It wasn't too bad of a day for me. HWFD felt good, and I thought I was gonna go big, but didn't happen. LWFD felt like total crap. Hammers i coming around. Sheaf we jumped up to the 33'6". My final throw was HUGE, but off to the side. WOB felt good, I am getting to the point where I am throwing high enough for 15, just not over the bar. The stones for the farmers walk are big stones with a rind handle on a swivle. So when they hit your leg, they start spinning. Makes it interesting.

LH 10 throws. Worked on using the blades properly.
WOB 10 Throws at 15'. None Cleared. booooo
Read up on Jim Wendler 5/3/1 program. So I figured I'd try that. I'm doing the "boring but big" workout. Which pretty much means you do the main lift, then do the main lift for 5x10 at 50-60%, then an aux if wanted.
Push Press
135x5, 155x5, 175x6, 115x10x3, 105x10x2
Lat Pull downs
165x10, 180x10
Yes, this is my first time in the weight room in exactly 2 months

It's there. I get nervous about DL heaving without a belt. I ordered one, but its going to take 6-8 weeks. I found out I can go heavier if I strap up, since my focus shifts from my grip(which sucks) to my form, and doesn't hurt my back.

I did DL grip on the first 2 sets(switched after the 1st) and overhand on the 3rd. Tells how much my grip sucks, i could hold on to 315 for shrugs. The last set was a competition.

You're getting there Thrillingham...just takes time Hoss. You know this. I am on squat patrol here in an hour...I get to relearn squats. With 135.
Shame.
Silly question Big J, but when you grip the bar, are you REALLY squeezing it, or just hanging on?

A little of both, ha. When I focus on my grip, I really squeeze, but then my form(DL is the worse) suffers. But My grip really does suck, I can hang clean 225 maybe twice.

I gave decline a shot and quite a few top PLers said it was no bueno for raw pressing and will lead to RC issues..
might want to pass that on to your raw PL buddy..
I agree with push press, but I still have a bench specific day because I compete PL.. it's what you want to do really. I would have replaced decline with close grip, and replaced dips with skulls..

I lost 11lbs in 3 months, which was ok. Wanted to lose more, but I didn't put much effort into it. My back is giving me problems(but who's isn't right?) I decided to ignore the info that most people give me about DL traditional style. I went to what i call "modified sumo" style. pretty much its sumo, but my legs are as narrow as possible, not too much wider then my traditional stance. allows me to keep my back flat. I know the bench workouts are over training, and I plan on changing it up after this week.

Meh I bench every week and don't feel overtrained. I just have a deload week about every 6 weeks. However they aren't always straight up bench. I'll bench with chains for 2 weeks, then switch to bands, or switch to close grip or do regular bench.

I meant that i was doing Flat, decline, and incline in the same work out. My wrists, elbows and shoulders were feeling the wear and tear. So i'll change it up next week
Duncan: My back has it moments. Its mainly due to my bad tech and/or weak lower back. I was doing good, then over did it a couple weeks ago when attempting to DL heavy again. My Chiro is a power lifter and his wife/sec is a world champion/world record holder power lifter (Michael and Jessica O'Donnell) and he thinks I should Limit myself to 405lbs DL until i get the strength and Tech right.

12/20/10 Went to the Chiropractor. he did some major adjusting on my lower back
Squat x5 145 - 225 - 275 put 295 for my first working set and my back gave up on me.
Leg press x5 270, 360, 450, 540
Ham. curls 3x5 didn't write down the amount because i was pissed and hurting
12/27/10 after my 3rd Chiropractor appointment, and limping around through the holidays, I squated again 145x10, 225x8, 275x6, 315x5
Zercher: 145x5, 185x5.
Push Press 145x5, 185x5, 225x5
Back felt good during, after, and today for the most part, so I think we are heading in the right direction. Still lifting light though. Still working on my "group" to do a proper workout. Why we did squats and push press on the same day and we are doing upper body today I will never know. But since I'm not lifting heavy this week, I let it go for now.

Ever try squat briefs? I thought I was going to need to quit squatting a few years back. Tried them and they save a lot of mileage. Cheap experiment that worked out well for me.

12/28/10 Bench: 225x5, 245x5, 275x11 Decline: 225x5x3
I treated decline as an aux and didn't go heavy. Go to the Chiro again thursday, and Deadlift after that. We'll see how the back holds out.

4th over all. 12 points out of 3rd(so not that close)
South team won 197-188
Overall I was happy with my day. I haven't thrown anything since Oct, So I was surprised with the PR's and the good stone throw. HWD was really disappointing, I was feeling good in warm ups. In wob I had 3 monster pulls at 15', but all left in front of the bar.

2/26 Ohio Tundra games
Braemar:37 1st HWFD: 33 (1 spin) 1st LWFD: 67 1st HH: 79 1st Caber: 12, 2:30, 80? 3rd? WOB: 13 T 1st
1st over all
I wasn't expecting any big numbers, just fun and time out of the office. I didn't trust the footing enough in the snow to 2 turn the HW. I was surprised how well the LW went since I was aiming for a shed and a snow man with a beer on its head in stead of throwing far. No grip in the HH, caber was light and braemared all 3 times, If i had the choice to skip WOB, i would have. Overall a lot of fun with great group of guys and gals. Speaking of: my g/f threw for the first time ever(no practice even) and won the woman's comp. It was awesome

It's a bigger compound movement and more taxing than a press. Some heavy OHPing can work on the low back, and I would want my posterior chain fresh for squats.
ymmv, obv, and realistically it's probably a small rock.

Fair enough. I guess it primarily comes down to which lift you are prioritizing on a given day, since one could easily reverse your logic if the Push Press were the priority.
I just generally prefer to do explosive lifts before slower ones. The Push Press is not a Jerk, but still. If we were talking Military Press I would agree with you 100%. As you said (I think), it's obviously no big deal.

Gilly, personally I wouldn't push press and squat in the same workout if you are going for max effort in both. Like Craig said too taxing on the body, espeically the lower back. Just my .02

Tom: The problem is due to time restraints, I only lift twice a week. So I do Squat/Push day 1 and Dead/Bench day 2. Dead lift is harder on my body then squats. And I know i can't Squat/Dead in the same day, because I've tried it. So Squat/Push seems like a good combo for me. I could just do 1 major lift a day, and do the 4 day cycle over 2 weeks, but I'm not disciplined enough to do enough aux work to make it worth while. I thought if I have a unmotivated day, I'll at least do the 2 major lifts. The Weight room has never been my favorite place to be, and not having a coach giving me workouts and riding my tail has hurt me the last few years. But, now I'm getting better at getting the work done instead of making excuses.
Sean: you have obviously never seen me do cleans/snatches : ) well for 1, i only do them hanging, and 2. there is no bending of the knees. Its all hips and traps. Probably why I've never been able to catch anything over 340.

5/21/11 Competed in the Celtic Beltane Festival in Hartville, OH
OS : 53'2 HWD: 38'8 PR LWD: 75'5 tied PR HH: 95'1 Caber: 11:30, 11, 12 Sheaf: 33
I thought I was going to get a bigger open stone, slipped on my last throw. The weights are feeling better, I think I'll go 40 soon in HWD I'm still missing something on my hammers The Caber was ok, It was the third time I've throw it this year. I am getting much better at the pick and control. Just need to work on the speed and timing I left a 35' sheaf out in front of the bar, so I was feeling good about it after missing 30' at the last 2 games.

OS 46+ HWD: 36+ HH: 95+ WOB: 14' LWD: 76+ PR Caber: - Sheaf: 20'
The OS was 20lbs I believe. Tech felt horrible, but the rest were surprised I could do a full spin with that stone
HWD felt eh. I only took 1 warm up throw, So I think my first 2 throws I was still "warming up"
HH felt great, I just didn't throw far.
WOB: I was going to come in at 13, they jumped from 12 to 14. 14 isn't always automatic for me yet, my timing was off. I thought I had some big pulls at 15, but not in the right direction
LWD: PR, felt great
Caber: huge stick. No picks. I will have to either A. change my technique or B. get stronger so i can pull the caber into me. I had no problem getting the caber up, but all three times it was to far behind me, something I can fix with a lighter caber.
Sheaf: never felt comfortable, but who does with a 25' bag?
I didn't get a place, I threw "on my own" with the pro's. It was a good day, and I learned a lot.

OS: My third throw felt great, it felt like I had the best finish I've had in a long time. Chest felt the big stretch, and my foot slammed again the board on the reverse HWD: Blah. I thought i was on to something after the last for comps. All went to crap WOB: same as HWD Sheaf: I need to get my own 3 tong fork. I shut it down when I cleared 30, and 2nd didn't LWD: Felt great, just didn't go HH: Eh. about normal. I am dipping my shoulder and throwing a lot of line drives Caber: I was wore out at by this time. My hands slipped on the first one, braemared the 2nd for and 85, and don't remember the 3rd
I think the lack of sleep, the drive, and the heat just combined and I lost a step. For the most part the throws felt good, just had no pop. Thanks to KO and his family for putting on a great games and great food.
6/7/11 Practice
Sheaf: 10 + throws. Tried some different things. One of the masters at Alma said I should try to remove the hop I do in the Sheaf. I don't agree, but I tried it anyways. The Jury is still out
WOB: Take a couple at 13. Then cleared the first 3 at 15 so clean I could have thrown on a knock off bar. I checked the tape measure twice, lol Then Took about 5 attempts with a spin. No luck, not patient enough.

After all this time, the WOB is starting to make sense and I'm getting better pulls. The spin is something I am toying with. Seems to get a little better each time

My high school puts on open track meets on weds nights during the summer. I usually judge/coach/throw at them.
Discus: F F F 145 145'3 F Shot Put: 45, 47, 50, F F F
everything felt horrible. Probably only the 3rd time I threw discus in a year, thats probably why. I am so use to the bigger stones(thats what she said) that a shot put is getting harder for me to throw. And i forget tape for my wrist, which always scares me.
Obviously since I fouled the first 3, and still go three more, these track meets are more for fun then competition. Usually we only take 4 throws, but a guy that's training to make the USA team comes out and uses it as a up-beat practice. So we take 6. His name is John Bowman and he went 211' last week. For you track guys, if you haven't heard of him before, you will probably very soon. He went 194 yesterday with 3 other throws over 190

Gilly, you throw high school or college implements?
Bowman is ridiculous and it looks like his new coach is working out well for him. He may make the world team this year. Him, Russ Winger, and Lance Brooks show a changing of the guard in US discus.

If i threw 145 and 50 with high school implements on a bad day, i would retire from throwing anything, forever. I struggle throwing shot put due to the problems I have with my hand/knuckles. The smaller the implement gets, the more problems I have due to the stress being put on my middle finger/knuckle.
Bowman has put on some muscle from when i met him last year. He said in the off season he has 2 throwing sessions: 25-35 throws in the morning, 40+ in the afternoon.

6/18/10 Chicago Pro/Am
B: 41'4, 41'4 1/2, 41'4 1/4 (crazy huh?) 3rd
OS: 51+ 2nd
HWD: 38+ 8th(flat ground PR)
LWD: 71+ 8th
LH: 113 8th
Caber: 80 12th
Sheaf: 27' T4th
WOB: 15' 10th
Overall: 6th
I was hoping to throw better, but I was happy with WOB and HWFD. I should have gotten better stone throws, since both stone were very nice. In my 4th year at the event I finelly got a mark in all the events. They start WOB at 15 and sheaf(20lbs) at 25.
